RIght in the city center with countless great restaurants and a wonderful gelato shop nearby. Easy access to train station, lots of busses, etc. Nice breakfast. Staff helpful. Only negatives were lack of comfortable sitting chair in room, and a bit too warm for me, coming from a quite cold climate. I would definitely stay again.

LOCATION Zanhotel Tre Vecchi is about a 10-min walk from the Univ. of Bologna.
TRAVEL It is an 8-min walk from Bologna Centrale ~ Bologna’s main train stn (allow yourself about 10 mins if you have luggage, or prefer to walk slowly).
ROOM & BATHROOM The room was tastefully decorated, though small. The hotel follows a green policy, providing premium toiletries in refillable dispensers, minimising single-use plastic containers.
DINING OPTIONS The hotel opens out on to Via dell’Indipendenza ~ one of the main arteries in Bologna’s historic quarter, and a parade of restaurants, shops, cafés, and heritage architecture ~ leading from Bologna Centrale to Piazza Maggiore.
STAFF The staff are warm, friendly, helpful. I wanted to make the pilgrimage on foot to the hilltop basilica of the Santuario della Madonna di San Luca, situated c. 3.5km from the city centre. Seeing my determination to do this on foot, and not take public transport, the receptionist kindly worked out the best/safest route for me on a map. The walk there and back was effortless.
I had an early-morning train to Padova the next day, but was reassured breakfast in the restaurant would be ready before my departure.
BREAKFAST PLENTY of excellent fresh fruit, yoghurts, juices, a selection of cold meats/cured meats and cheese, a selection of hot food items, and the most scrumptious cakes.
SAFETY Being on the Via dell’Indipendenza, the Zanhotel Tre Vecchi is in a busy area of Bologna that feels safe.

The location was very convenient and very close to the city center. The hotel itself was okay, obviously old and there were signs of disrepair throughout including peeling paint, broken cabinet door and old carpet. That said our room was still clean and comfortable if just a little musty, but we could have opened the window to fix that.

Fine little hotel

I got a fairly bare bones room with a small bed. Fine for a business meeting, but I definitely would have moved if I was on vacation.

The staff was very helpful and friendly, and the breakfast was very nice. And it is *very* conveniently located to the historic area.

This is not a 4 star property as the carpets are dirty, curtains torn and the bathroom facilities seem to have been installed in the 90s. The only good thing I can highlight is the quality of the breakfast.

Rude service. Room was small and very dirty and outdated. I checked in and immediately (5mins) went back down after seeing the room. Decided not to stay as there are plenty of other options abs was told they had to charge me for one night anyway as I had checked in. Paid it just to get out of there. Would highly recommend skipping this establishment.

Great location and good for gluten free travellers

The hotel is in an excellent location for both the train station (12 min walk) in one direction and also the Piazza Maggiore and all the other amazing sites in the other direction (5 min walk). If you walk around the corner there are lots of bars and restaurants. The breakfast restaurant staff were all very helpful as my husband is coeliac and there was gluten free bread, and other breakfast carbs on the buffet in addition to a good spread for everyone else.

This is a beautiful hotel, however it is outdated management needs to invest and make it great again, the carpet and paper in the walls need to be replaced; the furniture and the decoration is like from the 80s; staff is very nice, they tried to do their best but hotel’s owners need to invest otherwise people will stop going to the hotel

Worst stay in Italy

We booked 2 rooms. The worst in the hotel. 144 and 146. 144 had almost no working functions- lights, no AC, cold shower. Room 146 was positioned directly across from the cleaning rooms thus doors opening and people talking at 7:30 or earlier. The host behind the desk, older man, was not very helpful or had an “attitude”. I felt we rec’d the worst rooms in the old section of the hotel because we booked on this site. Our friends in 144 complained and were moved to the new section in a better room. We had cold water the first morning and barely warm the next 2 mornings.

The Heating / Air Conditioning system in the room would only work on heat. The room was like a sauna. The only way to cool the room was to open the window, which 1) had no screen to keep out insects, and 2) allowed the street noise to enter the room. The Assistant manager at the front desk was NOT even interested in addressing the situation. Worst night I have ever spent in an otherwise nice hotel.

The front desk staff was great! Friendly, helpful and professional. The breakfast had a good selection of food including some welcome vegan options. Our room was beautiful and the MOST comfortable bed we have stayed in during the last 2 weeks & 6 hotels. The location of this hotel was the best for us to walk everywhere near the Piazza Maggiore. We had our own car and the parking garage next door was plentiful and safe

Great location in the centre of town - only 10 min easy walk from the train station. The hotel is set back from a busy main road with a small garden and seating area in front. Our room looked over the road but there was no noise as long as the window was shut. ( the air conditioning was very effective and quiet.) We found the reception staff efficient but rather serious while the other staff in the hotel were helpful and cheerful. Our room was very clean and comfortable - bedding and town were changed every day. Breakfast was in an underground room full of mirrors - quality and choice was very good. Overall a great hotel fir our city break.

The hotel is lovely but the air conditioning in our room simply did NOT work! We were forced to open the window at night and still it was hot. But the room was hotter with it closed up. We talked to reception, who sent up a technician but nothing changed. Otherwise the room was lovely and the hotel is great. I would happily still stay there again but insist on a new room if the AC was a problem.again.

The Hotel Tre Vecchi is well positioned in the old city and is really close to all the main sights, i.e. within a few minutes one can be at the Medieval Museum, Neptune's Fountain, the towers, and the main square where one can catch tourist busses. In the opposite direction in minutes one can be at the train or coach station and within 15 minutes (at a slow pace) one can reach MAMBo. There is a taxi rank outside for those who don't want to walk.
The hotel has the character and style of many Italian hotels and offers a cool and comfortable lobby and lavishly decorated rooms. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom spacious, and the air-conditioning excellent.
Breakfast was really good; food was fresh, delicious and plentiful.
The staff were marvellous and I cannot thank them enough for their kindness (I asked many questions)... and the housekeeping team were wonderful and very fast.
This is an excellent hotel and I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Brilliant location, comfortable rooms, only disappointment was little choice for breakfast (maybe it's a thing in all Italian hotels as had it before somewhere else) but the fact that you can take your cheeky breakfast coffee out on the terrace in the sun makes up for it. Would go back again.

We were finishing our girlie holiday in Bologna. I chose this hotel because of it’s very central location. It was exactly what we needed, great central position, our rooms were very good . , comfortable big beds , lovely en suite bathrooms and an adequate breakfast before we left fir the airport.
It was good value for money and I would certainly return to the Tre Vecchi !

Nice Hotel in the heart of town!

Bologna and Hotel Tre Vecchi were both pleasant surprises. The facility was solid and the staff was eager to help wherever they could. They provided great instructions on the layout of the town, the highlights and provided exceptional restaurant recommendations.

The Breakfast was absolutely solid - however, the scrambled eggs were \"interesting\" (not recommended); everything else was exceptional.

The location was incredible - not far from the Train Station - but, far enough away that you didn't have to deal with the standard \"Train Station\" issues. The hotel was definitely walking distance from the center of town; but far enough away that it was quiet at night.

Overall, one of the best hotels we experienced on this trip.

Very good location and breakfast was nice but I expected the rooms to be higher standard. Carpets looked abit tired. There was s burn in the bedspread which looked like a cigarette burn. Beds were comfortable and bathroom was good standard. Not bad but expected better. Bologna was a great place to visit.

Bathroom shower was badly fitted, you had to hold the shower rose as no rail fitted, mould around the shower both inside and out, not pleasant. Would not recommend, however the location could not have been better.

Established hotel in a handy city-centre location

We stayed here for three nights. The hotel is older-style (perhaps even a little faded!) but nevertheless comfortable and with helpful, friendly staff - it was very good value for money, given its location. It's very well located on the main street through the city leading to Piazza del Nettuno - but it's set back from the street by gardens and trees so our room, although street facing, wasn't noisy. Breakfast was an excellent choice of buffet.

This hotel is badly in need of investment.

Reception staff were unwelcoming throughout the stay and seemed disinterested in guests. For example if you wanted a drink in the bar, had to wait for the duty porter to become available as reception staff in adjoining area would not assist even if they were not busy.

Room was large but very outdated, carpet was badly stained, toilet never stopped running, tiles were cracked and grouting mouldy in parts or missing etc. Hose to the hairdryer had a two inch slash in it which made it ineffective and a potential health hazard.

Breakfast was poor, both in terms of organisation and quality/range of food on offer.

If you wanted a drink in the bar, had to wait for the duty porter to become available.

Location is good with a 10 minute walk to the centre and a 15 minute walk to the railway station.

Charming Hotel, great location but uncomfortable.

We arrived just after midnight. It was a cool, rainy night. Our room was uncomfortably warm and we couldn't bring the temperature down in spite of opening the large window overlooking the Via dell'Indipendenza. The buzz from conversations echoed through the portici lining the streets from Friday night student revelers. We changed rooms the next morning. Still too warm, but quieter with the window open. The hotel has a great location near the center of old Bologna, halfway to the train station.

Hotel in the centre of Bologna

Let me start by saying that the hotel was very well placed for shopping & sightseeing, & the beds were very comfortable. The decor in the hotel is very OTT for my personal taste, lots of gold swirls ,mirrors & frilly curtains, but that IS just personal taste. The rooms were comfortable, and the housekeeping was exemplary. Whilst being greeted warmly initially, our reporting that our shower had no shower head was not received very well & it was suggested that we use the shower without the rosette head. The shower tray was so chipped that at first I thought it was dirty. (it wasn't) Ultimately, we changed rooms, but although a no smoking room, it smelled strongly of cigarettes. We were told it was the only non smoking twin room available & to open the window. The following day we discovered the jacuzzi bath leaked from underneath when the bath water or shower water went down the plug, & flooded so badly that if we didn't put lots of towels against theside of the bath it ran out the bathroom and onto the room carpet. The safe had been removed from the wardrobe. Assuming the safe in the first room is the same in all rooms, it should be noted that it was not big enough to take a tablet.

I can see why so many people book this hotel: they are in the Main Street and you can walk everywhere!! This is great but they should considere to change different members of the staff as they are really unhelpful and rude at the reception!!! Normal breakfast for European standard, tasty cakes but also there it was too busy, difficult to find a table and there were only two members of staff who had to clean tables, prepare coffees etc.. a bit of a mess

Hotel was fine for our purposes in that it is centrally located and well heated in winter, with wifi.
Our shower head was damaged (water went everywhere and the whole bathroom smelt like drains). When we told them they did change it for a functioning head but they didn't apologise for the inconvenience.
The city tax was more than stated on here (it's 2 euro a day, not 1.50) and when I told them that they should update this site, they didn't seem to care. Breakfast was simple and not super good but okay for a short stay if you're not too fussed about that as a meal.

Smelling of cooking, Low speed internet in room

1. Terriable Smelling of cooking from the gap of room door since 7:00 a.m to 11:00 a.m. There are a lot of air from Corridor to room. It make trouble for my sensitive nose.
2. Very Low speed internet in room even webpage, email or whatsapp talk.
3. Breakfast is boring, a few (2 type) hot food only.

My wife and I spent three nights at the Zanhotel Tre Vecchi, and found it an excellent location. We were greeted warmly by all staff over our visit, who were unfailingly helpful and a source of excellent, accurate information about local transport, city attractions and good restaurants - of which there are many. We acted on several of their eating recommendations and were not disappointed. Our front of hotel room was set back from the main street and relatively spacious, and had excellent en suite shower facilities. The king size bed was very comfortable. There was a little traffic noise with the windows closed, but nothing too obtrusive. Bedding was changed every day, as were the large bath towels.

Lovely hotel, will stay there again

Hotel is very well appointed with lovely rooms and great breakfast. Check in was very efficient and we were on our way up to our rooms in less than 3 minutes. Rooms were spotlessly clean. It was very hot in the room and couldn't figure out the air conditioning so open the window to cool the room down. Checking out was also efficient and lady was very helpful in guiding us for the bus tour and not pushy in selling us the tickets which we appreciated.

Room was smaller than average but comfortable. Bed linen and towels changed daily. Excellent buffet breakfast. Staff pleasant and helpful. Hotel well located for exploring Bologna on foot and not too far from local buses and railway station.

The front desk staff was unhelpful and generally unpleasant. Rather than order a cab as requested, they sent my husband, toddler and I on a wild goose chase for a cab with two luggages, a stroller and carseat in tow. After 15 minutes or so of walking, another hotel was gracious enough to call us a cab. The rooms are old and in need of renovation. The comforter was rough and the furniture old and in one case broken. The bathroom was huge and clean. Cleaning and food service staff is friendly. Breakfast was very good.

All about location

5 minute walk from train station and Piazza Maggiore. Check in quick and friendly, as are most of the staff. Room unusual décor but by Italian standards quite spacious. No tea making or ironing facilities unfortunately. Bathroom could do with redecorating and leaking shower bit of a nuisance, but overall an ideal hotel for a short break in a lovely city

Not the best...

This wasn't the best experience i've had. The confinmation i got said check in was at 12, my room was not ready until 14 though.. when i eventually got my room and went to take a shower, there was no running water. I was not informed by hotel staff that this would be the case. The room itself was terrible. It was the smallest room I have ever seen, maybe 6m2 and very very dark. That is when claustrofobia ensued. Air conditioning was very lound considering the room was in spite of the noise, very stuffy and hot. Ignoring the suoperloud climatization I managed to get some sleep... until redeption connected a call from some confused mexican lady to my room at midnight. They had also told her my name... needless to say I do not know any crazy mexican ladies and the call was redirected to me by mistake. Woke up and could not get back to sleep in my shoebox room with the ridiculous non-functioning air conditioning noise. Reception was not apologetic at all and frankly, first impressions arriving at the hotel were pretty sad as well... Breakfast was served in a mirrored mazelike basement and was terrible. Coffee was also bad. Only thing positive about this place was the bellboy. He was nice ans very kind. Cudoes to him.

Good central Hotel, enjoyable stay.

Great location in heart of city, friendly & helpful English speaking staff, very clean but shower would not drain. Also no tea/coffee making facilities which appears to be the norm in Italy. Many ristorante and other eating places closeby and good shopping. Bus at doorstep and short walk to station. Ferrari Museo x2 easy to get to & worth it at 13 euro. Ducati must be booked or you will not get in.

Hot and uncomfortable

The hotel is well located on one of the main shopping streets and about equidistant from main piazza and the train station.

Inside the reception area is small, but well fitted out with several places to sit (including outside under some wonderful trees. The breakfast area is downstairs in a basement that is interesting.

The rooms and attached bathrooms are clean, reasonably spacious and our room had a great view through the trees (but there was a catch). The WiFi generally worked reasonably well and was included in the room price, as was breakfast.

We were in Bologna when the temperatures were in the low to mid 30s C. The hotel's air conditioning couldn't cope. Our room was hot and extremely uncomfortable all the time. Most of the time it actually seemed cooler outside than in the room! However, opening the windows at night was not an option because we faced a busy street.

I spoke to reception staff several times and eventually asked for a fan, which was delivered. This made some difference, but nights were awfully uncomfortable, leading to late night showers to keep call. The staff seemed resigned to the fact that the AC just wasn't up to it.

Our advice is: Do not stay in the hotel if the weather is likely to be hot or until the air conditioning system is confirmed as fixed.
