The most beautiful location for a hotel! Our balcony had stunning views of Lake Bled - I don’t think I’ve ever stayed anywhere with such a gorgeous view. The hotel itself was a little dated but the service was great and there was car parking too. Breakfast options were brilliant and the sun loungers next to the lake weee perfect for a midday dip!

From the moment we arrived at the Grand Hotel Toplice in Lake Bled, we were completely enchanted. Upon check-in, we were greeted with a welcome cocktail in the sitting room lobby — and let me tell you, sipping that drink while taking in the most breathtaking view I’ve ever seen felt like a dream.

The service here is in a league of its own — truly the highest caliber I’ve experienced anywhere in the world. Every staff member went above and beyond to make our stay feel personal, warm, and effortless. Our room was absolutely perfect, and I have to give special mention to the water pressure (a small but very important detail for me!) — it was spot on.

The location couldn’t be better — just steps from charming shops, delicious restaurants, and local events. But the crown jewel of our stay? The hotel’s private beach. With bar service, attentive personal butlers, and the best possible access to swim in Lake Bled, it was pure bliss.

I have never recommended a hotel more highly in my life. Out of all of our global travels and experiences with Small Luxury Hotels, this one stands at the very top of my list. We will absolutely be returning — the Grand Hotel Toplice has officially become my favorite stay in the world.

Sadly not a 5 star hotel

The hotel is in a 5 star location but it sadly isn’t a 5 star hotel. Other reviews have spoken about the slightly rundown nature of the hotel (the pool being the main exception, which is beautiful), but the staff were noticeably what made it feel like a 3 star or less. We had to experience an incredibly rude bartender twice, to the point we didn’t bother drinking in the hotel. There was confusion over a cocktail on night one, a bit of rudeness but then an apology, a new cocktail and what we thought was a fix. The same thing happened on night two, and while a fix was given the bartender then returned with the bill (unprompted) just to tell us he wouldn’t be fixing the cocktail again and they make it the way they make it and that’s it. They accepted they weren’t making the cocktail in the standard way (without the menu clarifying this, it just called it its usual name) but they wouldn’t fix it for me again and this was the last time. If they had just charged me more for the cocktail I wanted it would have been fine, but the staff made a particular effort to say you are wrong and it was just so unnecessary. On check-in, the staff also prioritized getting us to upgrade rather than explain anything in the hotel. So we didn’t find out there is a free boat ride or free breakfast in the hotel. They just apologized at check-out with an ‘oops’ (although the lady at reception then was lovely!) A beautiful location for the hotel, but not worth the price given how they treat guests.

We had an idyllic stay here. The property itself is classic and elegant. 100% old world charm! We had lake-view suites which were simply marvelous. They were large, graciously-furnished and very comfortable. The lake views were breathtaking. My father sat on his balcony watching the lake and listening to classical music every morning in bliss.

The facilities are terrific. Breakfast offerings were plentiful, tasty, and diverse. I'm gluten-free and had no problem finding tons to eat even before they brought me GF bread!. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel but it looked very good. My sister enjoyed swimming and enjoying the sun from below an umbrella at the hotel's private beach. I loved the spa, alternating between the saunas and the thermal pool. The water was cool but comfortable once you adjusted. And all the minerals -- I felt 10 years younger. We rowed out to the island and visited the castle, of course. Lovely! But the hotel's own amenities should also be a draw.

Finally, the hotel staff are the best! Marion especially feels like a forever friend. But everyone was so friendly and answered our questions with great patience and excellent ideas. When we had an unexpected change, they were understanding and accommodating. From directing us to local GF bakeries to advising where to buy Slovenian wine to the easy valet parking and the thoughtfulness of waiter who served our welcome drink, the staff made an already superb experience even better. I can't wait to return!

This is a beautiful hotel with (in lake-side rooms) a stunning view.

We got lucky - the room we were originally given had a broken air conditioner so we were given their one of their 2 newly refurbished rooms. The room was beautiful and comfortable and had those handy USB charging ports that are so useful. We had a balcony room and the balcony was just so pleasant!

The one real complaint was the A/C. It worked great during the day! But at night for some reason - regardless of what we set it on - it was hot and didn't work well. It was explained to us that this was because the hotel was now eco-friendly and had a cap on A/C temps. Supposedly it was set on 73 - which is what I have my home set on. It was not 73 in that room. It had to be at least 77 or 78.

The designers put a chandelier in the room - which really was unnecessary. The lighting around the bed was perfect & we never used the chandelier. I really, really wish they'd put in a ceiling fan instead. Then we wouldn't have even needed A/C. With the doors open and a ceiling fan, it would have been very pleasant without A/C - which would then be far more eco-friendly!

Apart from this, the breakfast was ok. I'm not sure if the a la carte items (like omelets and scrambled eggs for example) were at an extra charge - my husband insisted they were. If they weren't extra, then the breakfast would be perfect. If they were, then I felt the breakfast lacked a solid protein option (like scrambled eggs).

We had a great stay at the property; the location cannot be beat. Direct access to the walking path, rowboats and bikes made our two day stay very efficient. The rooms are dated, yes, but they are spacious and we heard they are about to start a total renovation. We had everything we needed, though the bed was a little soft ( to each his own). A special shout-out to the pool facility. It’s a WOW! The spring water is piped in, so beware…”fresh” means cold in Slovenian! But it was worth it! The facility is beautiful and the choice of saunas afterwards make you forget you were ever chilly. Hopefully the renovations stop short of the pool bc it needs nothing.

I went during the end of September so not sure what it's like in the summer. The hotel itself was nice and obviously a great location. Nothing really stood out but it was good for what I needed. It was within walking distance to shops and restaurants. The buffet breakfast was fine. There is a dress code in the evenings and for dinner which made me feel a bit uncomfortable as I didn't know this in advance and packed for Slovenia outdoor adventuring not for dressing up so just keep that in mind.

Parking was about $30/day Canadian. There are parking attendants that take cash from you when you first park but the hotel also charges so I had to let them know I already paid the attendants - they were totally fine about it.

I would say that the staff weren't the friendliest compared to other places I stayed in Slovenia but that could just be my opinion.

I do feel as though it was a bit overpriced for the time of year I went and the amenities and service level but again, just my opinion.

The Grand Hotel Toplice offers a memorable experience, though it doesn’t quite meet the expectations of a 5-star property. The true highlight is the unrivaled view of Lake Bled—absolutely breathtaking and reason enough to return. We were charmed by the elegant neo-rococo design of the common areas, which at times had a unique, almost Soviet-era ambiance.

We stayed in a lake-facing room with a balcony, which, while offering stunning views, was quite cramped with minimal storage. Our suitcases wouldn’t fit in the closets, leaving us to navigate around them. Given the hotel's age, we anticipated smaller rooms but would recommend opting for a suite if space is important to you.

The hotel overall shows signs of wear, particularly in the hallways and some areas of the room. These things were minor but something you would not expect in a 5 star hotel. Although our bathroom appeared to have been updated recently, the renovation felt somewhat inconsistent with the hotel’s historic charm. Small details, like bars of soap without a soap dish, left the limited counter space wet and cluttered.

In summary, while the hotel could use some updates and a thorough cleaning, the incredible views and historic charm make it worth a visit. I’d gladly stay here again despite its flaws and must note that we had wonderful interactions with staff as well!

Pleasant, relaxing stay but expected better

We had a very pleasant stay overall, but some aspects were not what they should be for a 5-star hotel and the price.

Firstly, whilst we should say that the majority of the staff were very helpful, a few fell short of the mark - in particular: one or two of the restaurant workers being slow to serve (one even forgot to place the order at breakfast), another at the boating place took 20 minutes to unlock the boat AFTER we had got in it (it was laughable after he had spent half this time trying many different keys).

The food in the main restaurant was very good (although the menu for the evening meal was sometimes slow to appear).

The spa was a good experience, except for the unfortunate smell coming from some of the drains.

The hotel itself is fairly dated - much of which is charming, but for example, the main lounge/seating area (which has lovely views of the lake) has cold, intense lighting and just the sound of noisy heaters/air con - this could be really nice with a bit of thought to create some ambience.

The outside beach area was very pleasant.

When booking, we had opted for a room without a lake view. The room however overlooked the road and the balcony had no furniture (not that we would have wanted to sit looking at the road anyway).
Fortunately, after one night and after paying the additional cost, there was availability to switch to a room with a lake view. The view was wonderful and we are so glad we paid the extra to move.
The exclusive use of the sun beds and umbrellas right on the lakeside was lovely.
We also ate in the hotel one evening and the food was delicious and good value.
I would say that if you are going to stay at this hotel, then book a room with a lake view.

Good hotel, in need of some investment

It’s a big old grand hotel (more on this below) with an incredible outlook on to lake Bled, you can’t fault it for its location and the view. I’ll start with the positives as it is a lovely hotel, the staff are nice and the sun bed area by the lake is the main draw for us staying there, it’s the best place to relax on Lake Bled and jump in the water. Our room included one hour hire of the rowing boat which was great. We had half board so breakfast and dinner were included. The food was good for the price and service was also good. The only negative is if sitting inside in the evening is too bright, they have all the lights on and it feels a bit like a retirement home. Also, although the hotel was fully booked, the bar was dead at night, there is no atmosphere.

As mentioned, it is an old grand hotel so the decor is aligned to that, which is fine. However, as other reviewers have mentioned, it is in need of updating. There is no problem with the decor staying old-world but that is no excuse for not renewing things. The main issue we had was with the bed mattress, it was very old, soft and lumpy. It seemed like many of the springs were broken and I did not sleep well, by the end of the 3 nights stay my back was very achy. These really need replacing. The pillows in the room were also old and lumpy. There is a pillow menu, as is standard at many hotels, however they charge you to ‘rent’ the pillows (€5 for 3 nights I think) which is odd, should be free.

The hotel is literally right on the water, with its own private swimming area. The location is great. The staff were friendly and helpful with lots of information about places to go, etc. The biggest drawback is the squeaky floors in the room. They are old and in keeping with the antique theme but we were concerned about waking holidayers staying above, below and beside us every time we walked around our room.

This hotel is like stepping back into a movie from the days of elegant hotel stays. We loved the vintage decor blended beautifully with modern conveniences and amenities.
The view and the service were truly remarkable.

Our only regret is that we could only stay one night!

Words to the wise: Book your dinner reservation the same day you book the room (or close to it). We missed out on the opportunity to eat our dinner there. It looked amazing. Given the high quality of the breakfast, I am sure it would have been a special meal.

Fabulous location, the best views of Bled and everything in walking distance (important with the traffic in Bled). The private swimming area is a calm space away from the crowds.

The hotel has an old school charm that can’t be replicated. My room was spacious, comfortable and the fruit bowl there on arrival was a nice touch. A little dark as it was on the road side of the building. Good selection at breakfast - make sure to take a table on the terrace if you can. The beach was thoroughly enjoyable but nervous swimmers should know that the lake is 7 metres deep at this point. The free hour on the rowing boat was a great bonus. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Stunning view from the lobby area where you are gifted a welcome drink. I think I’d pay the extra to have a lake view next time as the sunset was spectacular.

We stayed in Bled for one night on a longer trip through Croatia and Slovenia, and the Grand Hotel Toplice wasn't our most luxurious stay. Our room was quite small (not a lot of room for laying out suitcases we had from our long trip) and not very renovated. The bathroom was small but fine. Overall, it's all about the location, views, and service here. Our room had a patio with a table and two chairs and an incredible view of the lake, the castle, and the island. The staff were lovely, very helpful when checking in with our car and checking out the next day. The staff also provided a map and made sure to point out special things to take in around Bled. The location couldn't be better, right on the walk trail around the lake. Overall, a nice stay if you're Bled.

A property that at one point was likely a jewel of the area. You can feel the history. However, this hotel has been under invested in for decades and unfortunately is no longer a hotel that is close to five stars unfortunately. Cost cutting is evident in many areas, staff (while most are very nice) are not properly trained, and the amenities leave a lot to be desired in all fronts including food and beverages. Amazing location and worth the visit. But don’t expect 5 star or luxury.

the view of the lake is like paradise. the staff most helpful. The breakfast was fantastic. The atmosphere is like bygone days. The hotel evokes nostalgia to the last century.

Excellent location on lake. Public rooms fantastic views. Excellent breakfasts, we didn’t eat there at night but there is a fine dining restaurant open only Fri and Sat when we were there. Downside, our rooms faced away from the lake and there seemed to be a problem with wasps/ ?Asian hornet on 4th floor

All staff and service excellent. Lovely breakfast. Location amazing. Great sun terrace and swimming area, although limited service in that area. Hotel needs renovations now, rooms very tired, hopefully can be updated without loosing the classic look.

Beautiful Hotel

It was a beautiful hotel in a great location on the lake with an incredible view of the castle. The only negatives I have is the standard room was small and the bed was very hard.

Long weekend at Grand Hotel Toplice

Drinks service on the sun deck can be a little slow - but it’s so relaxing who cares.
A beautiful peaceful few days in a stunning location. Probably the cleanest rooms I’ve ever seen.

Overall good, but not great, as it should have been at this property. First, excellent lake view suite, comfortable bed and well appointed bathroom with robe, slippers and hair conditioner. Large balcony to relax at the end of the evening and watch the birds flying over the lake. Anja on the front desk was delightful and very helpful. She recommended restaurants when the hotel Michelin Star restaurant was not available (something we had been looking forward to). The breakfast service was chaotic and clumsy. Staff were functional rather than helpful and welcoming. I suppose some might still be training. We were not offered any A La Carte options on our first morning and everything was serve-yourself, including tea and coffee. Food quality and choice was good though. On the 2nd day of our stay, there was no milk in our room to make tea/coffee. The hotel is an excellent base for all of the top attractions at the lake - it certainly has the best views of the castle and the island. But service and guest satisfaction (from all the staff) could be better.

Beautiful lake bled

Lovely hotel in perfect position on the lake . East walk into main area for restaurants and access to the lake . Staff were nice only gripe would be poor service getting drinks not enough staff waited ages on numerous occasions . Also the bar closes at 10 pm far too early for a top class hotel and no night service only mini bar in room !

The hotel is located directly on the lake with an amazing view. The hotel has old world charm, but our suite needed a full update due to drab and old furnishings and poor lighting especially since we got the suite for a 5 star hotel and we didn’t get not a regular room. Also the bed was uncomfortable (it was an air mattress). Breakfast was adequate, but had much better on our trip through Croatia and Slovenia. The best part of the room was the large terrace with amazing view of the lake. If it wasn’t for the view would give it a 3 star.

Superior hospitality!
A welcome champagne and a fruit plate after check-in. Housekeeping is excellent.
Breakfast is great. Lake view is stunning!

We wanted to try your tasting menu but it was fully booked for the week and the dining options were not explained. The reception were most helpful re booking other restaurants in Bled. We had an amazing week, thank you.

This hotel is amazing! The location, staff and breakfast were great so I highly recommend! I think the spa experience could be improved a bit. Maybe a greeting from staff and some info on where everything is. When we went, there was no one at the desk and afterwards I said hello to someone who was walking around and got a hello back but nothing more. There were no refreshments and the cafe/bar beside the pool was closed.
