This would have been an upscale hotel when it was built. Now it is showing some wear but it was very clean. View was phenomenal. No coffee maker in room—just two packs on instant coffee—this was a big minus for us. Pillows could be improved, no robes, tiny TV. Towels were amazing. Shuttle down the hill with our luggage was very helpful and appreciated.

For every positive, there are 2 negatives with this hotel unfortunately. Absolutely overrated and underwhelming for this price. The pillows were ridiculously flat, clearly overused. The receptionist (brown hair lady with glasses) spoke as if we were little kids in school when relaying instructions. The only highlight was the shuttle drivers, these guys radiate positivity and are very diligent.

Hotel Porto Roca is absolutely beautiful. Rooms are brand new - super clean, modern, wonderful bathroom. Our room was a 2 room suite with a large balcony overlooking the sea - absolutely stunning views. Breakfast buffet was very nice with a large selections. Hotel offers transportation to and from main part of town - a very short walk but with luggage transportation is was very beneficial. Highly highly recommend this hotel .

We loved our stay at the Hotel Porto Roca!! They sent a complimentary taxi to get us from the train station. Showed us to our beautiful room with an amazing view from the balcony & brought us a bottle of champagne & 2 glasses to celebrate our anniversary! Even had slippers for us to wear. The restaurant has a fantastic view, food was excellent, breakfast spread HUGE! The only downside is walking up to the hotel…the climb is steep and very narrow. But doable and there’s a gate onto the hiking path to Vernazza which cuts off some extra steps. Overall, this hotel was worth every penny! We did not swim in the pool but it is lovely & quiet!

Spectacular location, wonderful staff, large suite, enjoyed the jacuzzi, the view of the sea, boats and trains. The beds could use different mattresses, they are very hard. Very much appreciated the taxi service to/from the hotel.

We rented three jr suites. One on the top floor was updated and really lovely. The two others were outdated and not so fresh. The grounds are magnificent, be prepared to do some incline walking. Great restaurant options in town and easy access to the ferry. Hotel breakfasts were plentiful and delish. Staff was helpful and lovely.

This hotel is absolutely beautiful and a well planned end cap to our Italian vacation.
The breakfast was delicious! The best I had during my multi-week stay in Italy!
The views are spectacular! The beds were comfortable enough.
The room was clean and I was pleased overall.
There were a couple of items I could see improvement on.
1. Communicate better with your reservations. You were not yet open for the season, but I only found this out when I tried to call the day before my arrival to Terry to find out how to get to your hotel. Travel to another country is difficult enough, so not having staff available to answer questions when guests call makes it more difficult.
2. Booking through hotels.com is great marketing for you. I would never known your hotel existed has it not been for hotels.com. So to learn that you give direct booking customers preferential treatment is ridiculous.
3. The refrigerator in the room was not operational and everything in it got very warm. You should test these 1 week before reopening for the season.
4. When a guest asks for coffee when they’re paying the amount of money this hotel costs per night, the answer should always be yes, right away! Not wait 10 minutes and get it when the dining room opens.
5. We’re doing several ants in our room right before we checked out, and the balcony area inside the room. You should have a pest abatement program during closed season.

The views from this location are the best in Monterosso. The walk up to the property is not for the faint of heart but well worth the different views! One day we went to the beach and sat in the hotels chairs, and one day we went to the pool with gorgeous cliff side views!

We enjoyed a wonderful relaxing stay . The hotel is situated above the beach and town , so the sea, restaurants and shops are close by, but up a hill. The breakfast was delicious and served in a delightful area with great views. The pool was wonderful with amazing views. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We look forward to a return trip.

You must stay here!

After spending a bit of time in the town, I wouldn't recommend staying anywhere else. Here are the many reasons

- view was amazing
- breakfast was great with a good variety of options to choose from
- the bar offered an array of drinks at his prices
- it includes a ride to and from the train station
- there's a button at the bottom of their scenic hill you press and they'll come down to pick you up
- it was too cold for the pool, but it looked great for warmer weather
- the hotel is at the beginning of the trail, so if you leave from the hotel you skip the first of MANY hills

Only issue is that the beds were hard as a rock of them seem to be in Italy.

European charm with all modern amenities. Decor might seem outdated but our room had all modern amenities, remodeled bathroom, fridge and coffee maker. Only thing was that if you are picky with your hairdryer bring your own, the one they provide is good but not strong enough!

High on a hilltop- Hotel Porto Rica

The hotel is the farthest hotel away from the train station. But, the hotel supplies taxi service to their doorstep! Easy check in. But, beware of the size of your room. We had reserved a room with a double bed, and the size of the room was the smallest at the hotel. Even the front desk clerk and housekeeper made an astonishing remark of its size. The hotel is beautiful with breathtaking views of Monterosso. The breakfast and dinners are first class! The meal service was very impressive!

We loved the entire feel of the hotel. It is on a cliff just outside of town. Complimentary taxi from the train station. Great pool, pizza, large sun balcony with our room. It is on the hiking trail. Complimentary beach area if you walk down to town. The restaurant overlooking town. Rooms are small have great air conditioning and views. We absolutely loved the staff - Ruth, Manny, Nico, Simone and many others!

Prior confirmed Expedia cost disregarded. No doubt the best place to stay in Montorosso, and perhaps the Cinque Terre, but perhaps booked through another agency.

We really liked this hotel property and location. The facilities were so clean and well kept. The staff were wonderful, pleasant, helpful and professional. Our room rate included full continental breakfast. Our room was very clean but so small. There was no space to stow away our two medium size suitcases and two small tots. If you're looking for a romantically beautiful hotel property with breathtaking sea view and charming seaside village, you can't go wrong with Hotel Porto Roca. We took so many beautiful photos and posted on our Facebook pages. For sure, this place will bring you great smiles and lasting memories.

It s location is obviously high and therefore quieter for that with super views - it was not explained to me about having a taxi only once to station but there was a shuttle into the centre of town. Breakfasts on the terrace start the day beautifully and the pool location with scented jasmine was a delight.
There where little things like No body lotions in the rooms which I found odd for a 4 star hotel.

Only issue we had was that the hotel's pool was not available as they were doing some maintenance on it. We had hoped to be able to have it for our kids while we stayed. We did find other things to do though including hiking along the coast to some of the other towns. This is an amazing place to visit.

Beautiful hotel in a fantastic setting.

Spent a wonderful time at this great hotel set on a mountain side overlooking Monterosso. Unbelievable views of the Mediterranean, the mountainous shoreline and the town and its beaches. The hotel grounds are beautiful and the vistas fantastic. I would highly recommend the hotel to anyone looking to visit Cinque Terre. I suggest that you pay the premium for a room with a view as the internal cliff side rooms are small and a bit cramped. We intend to head back next year at the start of the low season.

My wife and I spent 3 nights and 2.5 days at Porto Roca during our honeymoon. We had an amazing time! The hotel rooms are nothing fancy, but fit in with the character of Monterosso. Our room was on the second floor and had an incredible view of the ocean, bay and town from our patio. The staff did a great job helping us with cab rides to/from the train station, making dinner reservations for us, exchanging money, etc. The bar and restaurant staff were so friendly and helpful. Porto Roca is one of the few hotels in Cinque Terre with a pool, which was fantastic. It's an infinity pool that overlooks the sea - pretty tough to beat that view. It was great for cooling off after hiking the Cinque Terre trails, which are a must-do for anyone who visits. We didn't eat any meals at the hotel aside from breakfast (included in the room cost) and snacks, but the menu looked good. We would highly recommend Hotel Porto Roca to anyone traveling to Cinque Terra and hope to go back again someday!

Porta Roca was perfect in every way, starting with the free taxi ride from and back to the station, the efficient and gracious welcoming staff who took us to our room, the spotlessly clean room and marble bathroom, the terrace overlooking the Mediterranean Sea . . . And then the 5+ star dining room and staff. Our seafood was caught fresh and prepared at the table, the octopus nearly melted in our mouths, the wine was lovely, and we were amazed that we could enjoy truly fine dining at such a reasonable price. Our stay at Porta Roca capped a fantastic visit to Cinque Terre - we cannot recommend the hotel highly enough!

Best view ever, nightmare parking

If you can figure out the parking, this is a spectacular hotel overall. The directions on where to park are extremely confusing. If you ultimately figure it out, you will be parked 5 minutes drive from the hotel and have to call the hotel to have them send a taxi as you cannot walk up the hill with luggage. We got totally lost as your GPS will take you to a totally different spot which is in a zone marked as \"limited\" to traffic (rather than saying \"unauthorized only\" or something that would indicate people staying at hotels in that pedestrian zone cannot enter so beware.
As to the property, it is very clean and modern. Rooms are very small, but if you have a balcony with a view of the water, particularly on the top floor, it is well worth staying here. Staff are pleasant and helpful and the breakfast was decent in terms of quality and quantity of options.

So sad to leave, it is an absolutely stunning location. The hotel staff always went the extra mile, so warm and caring but always professional. We stayed a week and it wasn't long enough. We ate in the hotel restaurant four nights and the service was always impeccable especially from Marco and the food Devine! Down in the bar Simona was someone who should be nominated Barman of the year, always professional. Young Lorenzo and Rosa at Reception including a hotel cat!!! Hope to come back one day. Awesome views, great pool, good breakfast and restaurant. Property is slightly dated and if you don't get a room with an ocean view you will be sorely disappointed. Paid for $90 a night upgrade upon arrival because the standard room was absolutely tiny and window literally opened to a rock wall. Overall though, I love Cinque Terre, and in looking around through all the towns I would choose here to stay again over anything else.

Spectacular View with Amazing Pool!

We stayed here for 4 nights on our honeymoon. This hotel has the most desirable location in Monterosso. Situated on the cliff with stunning views, this hotel offers much needed peace and quiet when in the tourist filled town of Monterosso. The pool area is stunning, with lounge chairs, a salt water pool, and 360 views to die for! Our first 2 nights were in a large sea view room with a great balcony. The second two nights we opted for a less expensive smaller interior room with no view. This room, though smaller and no view, was still adequate. We spent all of our time outside anyway. The hotel staff was very accomodating and friendly. A free shuttle took us to the train station the morning of our departure. We will definitely stay here again!

Beautiful hotel and staff in a wonderful setting

Just returned from an awesome stay at Porto Roca. It was easy to arrange the complimentary taxi collection from the main station up to the hotel, by email the night prior to our arrival. The staff are all incredibly helpful, chatty and most importantly, look happy. The breakfast is set in a beautiful outdoor (but covered) dining area with panoramic views across the harbour and the breakfast service was impeccable. It means a lot when your coffee preference is remembered after the first day! We dined in the restaurant one evening which was delicious and again, I cannot fault the service. I recommend the Gambini Risotto. The hotel was extremely clean and we stayed in a sea view room which was well worth the extra money. I would definitely recommend staying here.

Nice hotel with lovely sea view. Staff very friendly, polite and professional. Buffet breakfast was a little disappointing; for example, the scramble eggs were too well done. Had the room with sea view, good size. Big bathroom unfortunately the shower stall is very tiny, hard to move around.

They provide complimentary taxi service for transfers from train station to hotel which is very nice.

We had a fabulous stay at Porto Roca. The staff was most accommodating and friendly, the location can't be beat, and the service is top notch. We travelled with our toddler and they made that experience great. The restaurant at the hotel was excellent also and had a great wine list. We will definitely stay here again when we return to 5Terre.

You Won't Want To Leave

Clearly the finest hotel in one of the greatest places on earth.
Quite a trek up hill from the village, but give a call and they send a car. Clean, comfortable, fantastic views any time of day. We hated leaving. The people are very Italian (read nice); especially Simoni, the bar tender, great guy.
We were scheduled for one night, ended up staying three.

My wife and I spent 3 days/nights here visiting Cinque Terre. The location was fabulous. The hotel sits by itself just east of the downtown Monterosso area. It is suspended on the side of a steep hill. The views are spectacular. Rooms had King beds with Tempurpedic mattresses. Our first room was a bit noisy next to the stairwell but we were moved to an even larger quieter room for the next 2 nights.
Staff was very friendly and many spoke perfect english.
There as a direct access to the hiking trail from the resort gate.
If you drive here. Park in the lower level of the parking garage at the upper level of the village. You can either walk with your \"wheely suitcases\" or call a cab (by calling the hotel). Its about a 10 minute walk with suitcases in tow. Its a pretty steep walking path up to the entrance of the hotel.

Nice view, nice pool, nice breakfast, poor rooms

The hotel is good looking from the outside (especially the pool area). The staff is nice and helpful. If you have a room with a view, it is a plus. The rooms are oldish and really need some improvements. They look like motel rooms. So its a nice hotel, but it is NOT worth the price they ask for ... If you think you are paying for a 5 star hotel, you're not.

Old style luxury

That us \"old\" as in the 60's...in a good way! The NYT article I read that recommended the hotel in the first place said it was a place that looked like you'd see James Bond by the pool at in 1973 and that was pretty close to the truth. Fantastic views and service and the location has to be seen to be believed. It really is like out of a movie. Didn't get a chance to try the restaurant for anything other than breakfast (which was good) but we plan on coming back here as soon as we can.

Pleasurable- Dining area overlooks beach & Monterossa from high position.Swimming pool and other outdoor areas good. Service excellent. Waiters etc. well dressed..Meals,drinks etc. do not have to be signed for (or tipped).

Nice hotel with beautiful view

This hotel is located at the top of the hill. You can call the hotel upon arriving at the parking lot and they'll send a cab. The ride up in a cab is comical, because there's barely enough room for a car. The front of the building is very pretty when it is flowering. The view from the pool is nice. The view from the walk up to the hotel is spectacular. The view from our room was amazing too. The room was spacious. Overall we were happy with our stay. We did not dine in the restaurant, as it does not seem to have a lot of good reviews.

Phenomenal Panoramic Views at a Resort-Like Hotel

We stayed in Cinque Terre towards the tail end of a 2 week long European vacation and very much wanted it to be a relaxing get away. Not only was Monterosso was by far the best of the 5 villages in terms of beach and vacation feel, but the Porto Roca seemed to be the flagship hotel to support that kind of a stay. It's located at the southern end of the town up on top of a hill. One could easily just stay at the hotel with the breathtaking view and resort-like infinity pool. The only downside was walking uphill after a long day in town!

Extraordinary view

What a wonderful stay in beautiful Monterosso and Porta Roca is THE only place to stay. Perched up on the clifftop with a 180 degree view is simply stunning. We had come from Bellagio where we thought the vista was unbeatable but we have a tie.

Amazing Views

When you get to Monterossa do yourself a favor and get a cab to the Hotel. We did not know that you had to climb a mountain to get there. We pulled our luggage all the way and it was tough. Once there things went a little better. We did not reserve a seaview room and they put us in a very cramped room over the kitchen. It was not comfortable or quiet. After a restless night we requested a different room and for a 50 Euro per night upgrade we got into a much nicer room. Still not a Sea View, but very comfortable and quiet. The views are incredible. Worth the price. The pool was refreshing and the grounds immaculate. They had an excellent breakfast buffet and the restaurant is top flight. The view from our table was just unforgettable. I would recommend the upgraded room or the Sea View room.

Great Time in Cinque Terre

The Hotel overall was great with an amazing view. I would have rated this higher if it wasn't for the price. I fealt the price was a little high but I guess we were paying more for the view and away from the main \"downtown\" of the city. Overall I would stay here again if we come back.

Got the deal - very small room

We got some deal through Hotels.com and the hotel was nice with a great view but our room was SO small and the shower even smaller. We were in the back of the hotel with no view, which they told us before, but that meant we couldn’t really open our window and the room was stuffy and hot. We tried to turn on the air-conditioning but it sounded like a lawnmower. The breakfast was ok. The staff was very nice and helpful although not very up to date on what trails were open.

Great Splurge Hotel in Cinque Terre

The Porto Rocco Hotel is perched on a cliff overlooking the sea and the town of Monterosso al Mare. The vistas from the rooms facing the sea, and the bar are breathtaking. The basic room we reserved was small, on the cliff side of the hotel, with no light. The cliff was 1 meter from the window in this room. We upgraded to a sea view, and it was worth it. Please note there is no parking in the town. You need to park in a garage on the hill above the town, and call the hotel to send a shuttle for you.

Best hotel in Cinque Terre

Retreat like attitude... you can basically stay in the hotel (breakfast through dinner), using its facilities (restaurant / bar / terrace) or your room balcony which is quite large. Only thing missing is swimming pool (they told me they were waiting for a license, it's Italy after all) but with the Mediterranean at your feet (literally) who cares ?
I had a double room, great bathroom, enormous balcony (double size as well). Expensive but well worth it.

Paradise in Monterossa.

The views from this hotel are worth the money alone. Everywhere you wander there is a breathtaking scene. The staff are all very welcoming and made our stay most enjoyable. The restaurant was first class and the rooms were very clean and tidy. Can't recommend the Porto Roca highly enough.

Excellent hotel in Montorosso. High on top of a rock outcropping with excellent views. Expensive hotel but worth the money. The restaurant was excellent. Rooms comfortable, clean and the ocean views from the terrace were the best.

A room with a spectacular view

Although we were missed to be picked up and having to drag our luggage up a very long steep hill the ocean view from our room was fabulous and we quickly forgave the over sight. The hotel restaurant for dinner and breakfast equally fab view. The breakfast was ok, nothing more or less than other hotels. The room included wine glasses and bottle opener which was welcome when we bought a bottle of Chianti and antipasto to have on our balcony. Hotel staff were pleasant and helpful when required.

Beautiful view with very attentive staff

We really enjoyed the great view of the sea, town and mountains. The staff was very helpful in identifying restaurants and sites to see. The dinner at the restaurant is outstanding especially the antiposto buffet. We found the room typical of Italian hotels and was very pleased with the daily cleaning services. Without a doubt it is the nicest hotel in Montorosso although you do have to climb a long walk path to get to it.

Not worth the money

This hotel was very disappointing. The room was so tiny, and the beds were like cots from a camp. For the price, I would have expected much more. Very cheap & tacky decorating.

Great location but dated

The hotel couldn't have a better location - right on the top of a hill overlooking the ocean and Monterosso BUT the rooms are very dated, the beds are not too comfortable and the front lobby people were a little rude (NOT all of them, just a couple of the front desk people) - Actually the guys that drive you up and down the hill when checking in/out couldn't have been nicer. My suggestion for this hotel: invest in customer service training and bring your rooms out of the 70's. ALSO a warning: All rooms may have balconies but if you're not facing the ocean, your facing the side of a mountain with no view.
