Locating the unit was very difficult as it appears that the information on Hotel.com has not been updated in several years. The address reads as Via Carattino,5 and states the front desk is open 2-5PM and that staff will greet guests on arrival. #5 Via Carattino is actually a business that has been closed for 2 years and no one greeted us. We did receive vague directions that, once you knew the correct address, made sense but not before. It would have helped had the owner given us an actual address, not landmarks. We finally located our place after a local man helped us by calling the owner. Also, the unit was advertised as a Bed and Breakfast and that the breakfast was served at a nearby bar. There was no breakfast. That said, once we settled in, we enjoyed our stay and the small balcony, where we could watch the world go by.

All fine but the smells.

Unit was ok in and of itself. No climate control, but it was late season and the weather was fine (open window weather). The problem with unit however was the smell of sewage seeping into room from the WC. This is unlikely a problem with all of this providers \"rooms for let\", but it was for this one on 42 via Roma #2.

The room was extremely clean and well decorated. Very comfortable, with a nice little refrigerator, furnished snacks, and a great shower. The location in Vernazza was perfect - on the Main Street and near the train station.

The room is in a great location close to the train station and a very short walk with your bags. However, finding the office was a bit tricky as it is up some steps kind of hidden. The owners of the apartment were wonderful and explained everything to us. Check out was very simple and we did not hear the trsin in the middle of the night since it stopped running late evening. The furnishings are not five star, but its very clean and comfortable and safe most importantly. Loved our stay and would definitely return.

Great location, nice room on main street

We found our room easily with directions via email from the owner. Cash only, no credit cards. Stayed in a very nice room in a great location in downtown Vernazza. The other room had a balcony, not ours. The trains did not bother us over night. We will definitely stay here again.

We had a lovely stay here! Everything was great, not a huge space but great little balcony overlooking the main street. There is an entrance area with a little couch and a mini fridge, and doors leading to the bathroom, the bedroom, and a housekeeping office/storage. Check in was smooth and friendly :)

Lovely Spot in Vernazza

We had a lovely stay. Vernazza is a great base for visiting the Cinque Terre and I would happily stay here again.

The reception was pleasant and efficient. The room was large and clean. The bed was a bit hard and short for my liking. We were on an extended trip and had large suitcases. That was a problem of our own making. Though reception is just off the main street, entry to the room was up one of the steep staircases which passes for a street in Vernazza. Pack light!! Also be aware that the town is small and the train traffic can be a bit loud at times throughout the night.

None of that should discourage you though. Just enjoy it as part of the experience!

We had no expectations and did not know what to expect. We arrived late, 6:30 PM after traveling all day via train from Belluno Italy. Not know where to go we were able to get some direction from some local folks. We found where we were to check in but it was closed for the day. A good thing! the proprietors left us a note explaining where our room was. Along with the explanation was a very detailed hand drawn map. Our room was right off of the main street, second floor, up some very steep marble stairs. The room key had been left for us, room was clean, bed was nice, shower was great. The location was superb and we spent 2 very nice and enjoyable nights in this delightful hotel. We could not have asked for anything more. If you are a light sleeper and the street noise bothers you, this may not be the place for you. It did not bother us in the least. Close to the train station so the first high speed train not stopping in town sounded like a, well, freight train.

My room was more like a storage room converted to look like a hotel room. Awkward closet, bed location, shower, bidet... Worst hotel room I ever stayed in & I traveled the world.
When I told the 11-5 receptionist, her only response while taking my money is \"Sorry\".
I deserve a full reimbursement & additional money for suffering 2 nights in this place.

Noisy and Little Attention to Detail

Narrow, steep stairs to the room. While this was supposedly a self-contained \"apartment\", there was a room marked STAFF, so I presume they come and go as necessary - through the room.

Noisy from 5 AM to 1 AM (20 hours a day) because of the trains.

No air conditioning - they gave us a rickety old fan that did nothing.

There was a kettle and sugar, etc., but no coffee.

When the staff \"cleaned\", they just made the bed and left - nothing else done.

The check out time changed from 11 AM to 10 AM while we were there. The penalty for staying beyond 10 AM (ridiculously early) was a charge for another night. I travel a LOT and this is ridiculous. Would NEVER stay there again.

So close to train station that you hear them ALL night... they just don't run through either, they do maintenance on them. Could hear men yelling at each other. No breakfast like they advertised either. Stairs were steep and slippery ... other than that okay!

Amazing location and friendly staff. The room was comfortable. The WiFi didn't work, and we kept getting an \"incorrect password\" notice although the staff told us we had the correct password. They allowed us to use the WiFi at their shop down the road. Also, the drains were clogged so the shower had to be turned off every few minutes in order not to overflow the base. Overall, the price was good and the location was amazing. Plus we had a private bathroom so we made it work. But we are generally easy going.

Great location on main street of Vernazza

When we arrived from the train station, we couldn't find the room or the check-in desk. We walked up about a million stairs and down countless little walkways that disappeared and changed names. Eventually, we found someone to help us, and he took us just a few steps up from the main street to a jewelry shop that also acted as the check-in for our room. It was so close to the main drag of the town! The gal checked us in within about 2 minutes and walked us a couple more steps to the entrance of our room - RIGHT NEXT to a little wine bar on the main street. We walked up about 20 very steep steps, and our room was on the left: very easy to find and ascend for able-bodied people. Our room was great - a comfortable king-size bed, a sofa, a mini kitchen with fridge, and a bathroom with toiletries and clean towels. It also had a TV that I didn't watch much because I don't speak Italian. The window opened up above the main street. Finally, the staff came to clean our room daily (though only replaced towels if they were on the floor). Checkout was confusing, as the jewelry store where we checked in was closed when we needed to check out. We left our key in the room and hoped for the best.

Ok room but difficult to find. Wandered around town for 45 minutes till we found it. Should have sign visible from Main Street. Appreciated the owner keeping her shop open an extra hour waiting for us. Close to train station so loud train noise kept us awake.

Initially we had an issue, our room had a room that needed to be accessed daily by staff to service towels for all their rooms. Something we were not told in advance. But after talking to manager the porter took what they needed for the time we were there and no one else entered our room. I would definitely stay here again, just not room #52

The Rollando is in a great location, very central. The hotel cleaner was very nice and went out of their way to rearrange the room nicely for us when they saw things could be better. The room itself was pretty small and the bathroom walls were all moldy. It was hard to feel clean there. But the price was good, so maybe that's how it is. Pay more if you can't handle mold!

The center of it all

Our specific room was located on the main street, second floor and had a balcony, which was great to take in the city. I say \"specific room\" because it's unclear how many other rooms in other buildings the affittacamere might own. The room was satisfactory in all regards, both private and welcoming. The only drawback was the noise from the active train station which runs from 5ish to midnight. In fairness, about 30% of the city likely suffers from the noise and there are others who have it worse. Overall, a nice place to stay.

Good location with a comfortable bed

If you are looking for simple accommodations and you are not too choosy this place will work for you. It is located within a very short convenient walk of the train station and the bed is comfortable. However, the bathroom was very small and in need of repair and an overall good scrubbing. Towels were provided but not replaced daily - their stated policy. While previous comments have been made about the noise of the trains going by, this is true - but the trains stop running at midnight and if you are good and worn out from hiking and visiting the other towns the sound of the trains will not prevent you from sleep (and I am a light sleeper)!

Apartment in Vernazza, not a hotel

We found the little shop where the check-in takes place and were taken to the apartment. It is up some very, very steep stair. It's quite difficult to get suitcases up the stairs. The apartment is fine, very basic, but we have a real issue with the security. The door on the street does not lock and several times, as we came home, we noticed the door was wide open. We didn't have any problems, but it is a little unnerving. On our first night, we realized that the heat was not turned on. We texted the owner, who replied she would deal with it tomorrow. When we insisted that we need heat now, we were told to go to the downstairs neighbour's apartment and turn it on ourselves. This worked, but only because the neighbours were willing to allow strangers into the apartment! They were also cold, and so were happy to have someone address the issue.

There I was sleeping and dozin kind of late, and I heard the key in the door .I hop out of bed grab my shirt to cover my privates and start yelling NO About six times. she sticks her head in and I tell her to go several times.And she walks in anyway and throws 2 towels on the table and leaves. All I had covering myself was that shirt. OK she is Italian,I'm from the Usa, maybe there was a language problem ,except No is pretty much international! Because of that I knocked down the score .But at 100 bucks a night my privacy could be respected ,heck she didn't even knock

Great stay. There really isn't a lot of choice in the area so this is about as good as it gets in Vernazza. Know what I know now I think I would have stayed in montorossa or the town 2 towns past montorossa called bonnosorra. Beautiful beach there. Less tourist.

Very authentic Italian feel

This hotel was very central and overlooks the main street of town. The room was clean and comfortable. Nothing fancy but we loved the authentic feel. There are quite a few stairs but very doable. Loved Vernazza. This room does not have air conditioning but the temperate was OK. It was a little noisy outside one night because we were in the center of town. We made it much harder to find than needed. We used map quest and google maps and nothing worked. We dragged our luggage up so many stairs without need. When exiting the train you can literally see the balcony of the hotel if you look down the main street. We also visited Montorosso and Riomaggiore and preferred Vernazza but any would be fine. Montorosso seemed more upscale by comparison, also had a couple kids playgrounds and more beach activities (paddle boards, paddle boats, larger beach).

Love the balcony!!

Great stay at hotel Rolando it is a truly beautiful town Vernazza. The room was nice the shower was fairly spacious and the bed was good. We had a balcony overlooking the Main Street which was awesome for late night relaxing and morning breakfasts. It was a bit awkward that the cleaning staff would clean the room around 2pm which was right when we would be looking to get cleaned up after our morning sightseeing. Overall it was a great spot for the money, we didn't expect anything that was missing and the fridge for cold drinks was a great bonus.

The staff was helpful, but on their own \"Italian\" schedule! We came in in the evening & they had left a note with directions to our room which was very helpful. Despite being right behind the train station, we did not find it too loud at night with the windows closed & fan going. We NEVER had a Wifi the entire time, which was a disappointment. Still...convenient location.

What to expect in Vernazza

in the heart of Vernazza. This is the good and the bad part. Beautiful town in the heart of the cinque terre. Also means the standard of accommodation isn't that great. Generally small converted apartments. The noise from the train is quite noticeable all night.

Having said that, we embraced it and enjoyed our time. It's just a pity all the walkways between the villages still aren't repaired after the landslide a few years ago.

Wonderful stay in Vernazza

Expedia says this is a hotel but it is really a private apartment rental, I at least missed or forgot that fact be the time I got there. You pick up the key in a nearby shop. The location was central and access to the rooms were not quite as many steps as others in the area. Wifi was the best we had on our entire trip. We were very satisfied with room and service. It overlooks the main street so if morning shop opening bustle bothers you, you might want to be careful.

I read a lot of bad reviews on this place but we enjoyed our stay there very much. Our room was large with renovated bathroom it's a good location right in the centre. Some people might not like the noise from the Main Street outside but didn't bother us too much. It's a nice traditional place to stay in a beautiful location

We rent the room for 2 nights. When we got there, the owner told us that the room was unavailable because the toilet was broken, but she found us another room.. I should say another appartment. She called a friend and found us a bigger place for cheaper on the same street. I cannot rate the room, but I can rate the service that we got. She was nice and did everything to accomodate us. We stayed at a beautiful appartment.

We met our friendly host at the gift shop as arranged and were shown to our room. The room was extremely well located, a few floors up on the main road in Vernazza. It was a big room with a table and chairs and small fridge, as well as a big and comfortable bed and well equipped bathroom. Everything was spotlessly clean. Would definitely return!

Great Location, No view, NOT a hotel!

Apartment to rent for the night, not a hotel, no view, freezing cold inside and it was 70f outside, although they did provide an electric space heater. There was plenty of hot water for a long shower and the place was very very clean. The ladies I checked in with were very helpful and nice, and explained everything I needed to know about the room but overall the value and location I'd say were poor.

This is not a hotel but more just a room that you rent. The room was clean but very basic. The mattress is not comfortable at all. It is very loud at night. in the room, there is a train that runs throughout the night and it is so loud that it feels like it is going to come right through the room. Also the stairs going up to the room are very steep and feel very dangerous. It makes it very hard getting your luggage up to the room, however, it does seem like this is the case for most of the places to rent here. My only other complaint would be that the towels that you get are really not towels, they are more like a bed sheet than a towel. Overall the location was good (aside from the train keeping you up all night) but that is about it, I think the rate is way overpriced for what you get.

We stayed at the Rollando in Vernazza September 2011. Overall we were pleased with our stay. Vernazza is great. Touristy during the day,but clears out at night. Nice beach to swim in after a day of hiking. Rollando is five small but authentic rooms, clean. Bathroom smells a little moldy, but clean and remodeled. Tricky part is that you check in at a small shop called \"PATHSHOP\" behind pharmacy. Look for the red sing near the 5Terre path. It is on the main street (no cars though), and very near the train station, so if your a light sleeper this may bother you. I am, but I slept fine-just a word of warning. The room was at the top of 12 very steep steps, but is charming. Across from Blue Marlin Cafe which is good and reasonably priced.

Rollando Hotel in Vernazza

Despite being very convenient on the main street in Vernazza, Italy and the ease of online reservations (a rarity in the Cinque Terre), this was the worst and most expensive of all 13 hotels that my wife and I stayed in while in Europe.
Issues:
This is not really a \"Hotel\". They have 4 rooms spread around the city. The main desk is at a souvenir shop that is only open 2 hours per day. Neither of these would be issues if the place was presented as rooms for rent, instead of a hotel
The bathroom had terrible mold smell and black mold was visible all over.
Only one set of ratty towels was in the room when we checked in (this was a double room). We requested a 2nd set immediately. This was not provided until the following morning, and the towels were really scratchy dish drying towels (or similar).
The location, while convenient, is very noisy right by the train station and across from a few bars. There are nice new double pane windows that block out much of the noise, but it is too hot to keep the windows closed. There is no AC, but fans are provided.
This room would be perfectly adequate at 1/2 the price. For the price paid, I expect everything to be perfect.

Pros: Great location, clean, safe (locked outer door and a lock to your personal door - only 2 or so apartments inside the locked outer door), comfortable.

Cons: Overpriced, the shower leaked all over the floor (inadequate caulking), check in was at 3 and check out at 11, hotel will not hold bags without a charge.
