Spacious bedroom which was nicely designed. Good breakfast. Only complaint is that the shower is poor - 1mm difference between a burnt scalp and an ice bath. Also, FYI, shampoo provided but no conditioner.

Room was shabby but passable -very clean. It was very loud with a cacophony of noise from people & baggage (covered passageway with cobbles & people not realising that there were bedrooms right there).

The main issue was that the shower was TERRIBLE! Lack of pressure and no temperature regulation. It was my first day on a job & I had to have a bath instead of a shower, to clean myself.

£25 for a single cold stuffed mushroom and a lasagne that arrived stone cold in the middle.
Hot breakfast was poor. The sausage had obviously been cooked earlier and left in the fridge. (And not re-heated properly).
My room had an adjoining door that would not lock on my side. Had to wedge a chair under the door handle.

Unique property but not even remotely luxurious. Clean and spacious but sparse. Uncomfortable furniture in the sitting room. Poor lighting throughout (especially the bathroom). Friendly staff. If you are looking for anything more than a 2.5 star experience look elsewhere. If you don’t care about comfort and want a great location this is for you

Staff were uncommunicative / frosty. Room (executive double) had a cobweb across the door, crumbling plaster, (I have photos), thin duvet, was cold, dim lighting which was annoying trying to apply make-up for a wedding. Shower was either scalding or cold. No residents’ bar or drink service at 10.15 at night, just a surly “No” at reception. Breakfast was barely warm, bacon was chewy, and the tea and coffee were almost cold. It’s a beautiful hotel, but every aspect of it was “could do better”. No directions are given for the car park, which is in a back street and well-disguised.

The place is very tired and needs a lot of work
The room we had was small and at the front of the hotel and therefore noisy. The chair in the room was stained. In the bathroom the tap in the basin first would not give us cold water and then stopped working completely.
The staff were great and did what they could to help with bottles of water.

Fantastic value for money! Staff were so friendly and helpful and the food delicious and again great value. All lovely and the - unexpected for me- Midsummer link very interesting. Only issue was shower not working but staff again were super helpful and having to have a bath not really a hardship. Have recommended to Barnaby fans for sure!

It’s a great location but seeing as I booked a suite I didn’t like being charged for parking…. Also the kettle was downstairs but tap up stairs…..the tv down stairs was not a smart tv….so to watch the smart tv I had to go upstairs!!

I have stayed here previously a few years ago now.But today it is looking rather tired.
It needs a refurbishment and bringing up to date. The tv didn't work very well the toiletries were in sufficient. there was a very loud noisey pump next to the bedroom wall.
The breakfast menu was very limited in its options.
Needfess to say i ate out every night during my stay.

The staff at this hotel are great. All staff were helpful, professional and welcoming. Unfortunately, the hotel needs major refurbishment. The decorations are tired and worn, paint chipped, the heating is very wasteful and old.
We were pleased that our room had been upgraded, but we had to be moved, as the heating pipes for the radiator in the corridor outside were situated right behind the bed, making noise which made it difficult to sleep. The staff were very helpful in offering another room, but the radiators are difficult to control, so we had to have a window open in the middle of winter.
It is a shame that such good staff are working in a run-down environment that needs total refurbishment. You will find many little quibbles, such as bottomed-out chairs that need re-upholstering, just because everything needs overhauling.
The location is excellent, right in the centre of Thame, with lots of great cafes, restaurants and pubs.

This is the 2nd time bed has been very uncomfortable. Both times mattress has sagged in the middle and this time sloped from one side of the bed to the other.

The shower this morning was dangerous, it took a long time for warm water to come through, then became so hot I had to escape from the cubicle, flooding the area outside as I had to throw cold water from the sink over my back.

I turned the valve fully to cold but after 10minutes the temperature was still scalding and dangerous.

I was forced to use the sink to rinse soap from me (which is almost impossible to fully do) further flooded the floor which created a slip risk and I was forced to use all towels and floor mat to mop up.

The entire hotel was very tired looking. Our room was clean and functional but needed renovating. The window was stuck and couldn't be opened. There was no way of adjusting the temperature in the room Some of the staff were friendly but in general it was all rather impersonal. Breakfast was adequate but not that inviting. Parking was in a public car park behind the hotel and a fee per night was payable. It appeared that the parking fee was refundable for anyone who had a meal in the restaurant but not for in house bed and breakfast guests! We chose this hotel as we needed to be in the centre of the town and in that respect it was excellent. However we felt it was overpriced and would not stay there again.

The hotel is lovely overall, but the thing about older buildings is that they need a LOT of upkeep. The floors in the upper rooms are very uneven, so if you have any disabilities where balance is an issue, request a room on the ground floor. Otherwise, clean, relatively quiet and nice stay.

Replace the damned tubs with showers only. You could kill yourself getting out of that tub. Like baths?? Stay in London or go back to the 18th century. Loved the towel warmers.

Lovely suite at the Spread Eagle

We booked a suite at the Spread Eagle. It was excellent, very spacious, over two floors, which was good for me as I dislike sleeping on the ground floor. The bed was a super king, which is always a gold star as that's what we are used to at home. One of the most comfortable beds we've ever encountered in a hotel. The bathroom had a good sized shower and an excellent bath-wider than the normal hotel bath. I would have liked a little information in the room about the wifi, the restaurant, menu etc. We chose not to have dinner as we had visited relatives earlier and didn't feel we needed another meal. The breakfast was a little disappointing. It took some time to come-the waitress apologised for the delay-and when it arrived it appeared to have been standing for a while. The sausage was overcooked and one bacon rasher was hard. There was a good supply of coffee and plenty of bread and pastries. There was no fruit available. Overall we were happy with our stay and we will probably return as we visit in the area regularly

Dirty room but unable to move as fully booked with wedding reception. We did ask!. Shower did not work, no cold water from the bathroom sink. I actually had to clean the room of cobwebs and a spider which was clearly visible upon entry to the room! No room service on the 2nd day (when we were ourselves going to a wedding) so we only found this out when we returned at 12.30am. No receptionist on leaving so no-one to complain too either. Reception was rarely manned and when it was, staff were not too friendly! Young girl served us breakfast on B/H Monday was very pleasant though! We would not stay here again...and actually feel we have been robbed!

I can identify with many of the bad reviews listed. I have stayed here several times in recent years because it is convenient for family visits - there is no other option in the center of Thame. The staff do their best but the impression is of disinterested owners who are happy to run the place into the ground for the sake of profit. I get the impression that the place is understaffed and that the staff are given little/no authority to resolve issues. Arrived at check in time to be greeted by a sign saying “call this number if reception is unattended”. No one answered the phone. The other couple waiting to checkin went to the restaurant and were told that someone would be along soon. 15 mins later someone did arrive to tell us the rooms weren’t ready yet. Our room was fine but had a smashed electrical socket at the vanity table with live electrical wires exposed - lethal. Surely the cleaners would have noticed and reported it? It’s really run down and it’s obvious that minimum money is being spent on maintenance and repairs. Staff as friendly and as helpful as they can be.

This was by far the worst hotel I have ever booked via Hotel.com
The hotel was expensive, the so called ‘suite’ had a bare room with two chairs and a side table and the condition of this room, the bed room and bathroom was appalling!
Breakfast was a joke ! Very little choice, poorly presented, 3 of the 6 items on cooked menu were subject to a surcharge and one member of the staff team was so rude that if he worked for me I would have sacked him on the spot !!
Other hotel guests were also
raising the same concerns and we will all await for the manager to contact us !!!
Overall I will be seeking a full refund and WOULD NOT recommend this hotel to my worse enemy!!

We booked an Executive Room however it was only average. The French Doors had bolts, one bolt was impossible to open. The wi-fi didn’t work. The shower wouldn’t stop dripping but at least the door stopped us hearing it all night. The wardrobe door wouldn’t shut properly. Despite it being a hardwood floor there wasn't even a rug/mat at the side of the bed. The bed and pillows were extremely comfortable. When ordering our Evening Meal instead of Caesar Salad a plate of pasta was delivered. The salad was advertised as being with Gem Lettuce leaves however it was served with drenched iceberg lettuce leaves with pieces of ham instead of lardons. There was no yogurt available at breakfast. The general decor and carpets looked extremely tired.

This could, and I am sure will once again, become a destination hotel and I'm aware that renovation work is ongoing. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Best situated hotel in the town (central). Stared before and this time was given a room just up the stairs. Got in the room and looked very old and rundown. Piece of wood strung between 2 walls with 1 coat hanger on it. Window had an old set of blinds that just did not work, windows were old and would not shut and the rain (not hotels fault) was dripping down from a faulty cutter on to the window making a hell of a noise. So asked to be moved which they did. Second room I was given again up stairs walked in and the ceiling had a great split in it with water pouring through down on to the bed. Asked to be moved again. They gave me one of the garden rooms which was OK just dated and dull. On arrival with another guest at the same time. no one was at reception. Hit the bell no one came. called the number given if reception empty and it rang the phone at reception. In all waited 15 minutes before someone came to book in. Had breakfast included so went down and 3 other people there with one waitress who gave the impression that she would rather be elsewhere. Overall very poor and needs shutting down or refurbing. will not be staying there again.

This is just a tired hotel. The staff and management are friendly enough, the bed was comfy, fan appreciated, the food was good, and breakfast excellent, it just needs a head to toe refresh. Covid and Brexit obviously hasn't helped and getting experienced staff seems to be a challenge. But the component parts were all good enough and if you want to stay in Thame, this is a great option.

Bryan and the staff were very friendly, and while the quality of the room was to be expected from a historic building, the place is in need of a deep clean throughout the building, and 2 out of 3 of our curtains were broken along with the fan in the bathroom that didn’t work, but I’ve read they’re slowly renovating so look forward to that as the place has a lot of potential.

Breakfast was nice each day (we stayed for 4 nights over Christmas) but PLEASE change the coffee at breakfast. It was incredibly stale and awful each morning, I do think the bravilator bonamat coffee machine from 70’s used for breakfast could use a deep clean (or replacing) is the reason for this. Shame when there’s a full barista style coffee machine on the bar not being used.
We weren’t alone on this as many tables around us each morning also complained about the coffee.
We were told house keeping wouldn’t be available over Christmas Day (fair) but then our room wasn’t attended too any other day. The tap for the basin has definitely not been cleaned in some time.
The girl on the desk was happy to give us fresh towel and toilet roll though.
Otherwise a pleasant enough stay.

Disapointing.

Our room 30 was as expected in an listed hotel, wonky floors and ceiling which not a problem.. The furniture was scratched and chipped as was the paintwork on the window. In all the room was tired. The bathroom was quite large but the wash basin was only suitable for a loo and not really suitable for a bathroom.
The biggest surprise was that NO room service was to be provided during a 3 night stay. Due to COVID restrictions which did not appear to be in place anywhere else in the hotel. This seemed odd to us as in other hotels we have stayed in since the pandemic room servicing was done , even during periods of social distancing, dining pods and mask wearing.
Breakfast was not bad, but at times service was slow..
If you travel by car make sure that you pay for car parking at the hotel otherwise a fine is payable.
