My only criticism would be lack of privacy due to transclucent glass in shower and toilet plus the the toilet for was a sliding glass panel which was very noisy during the night

Beautiful spot. Really beautifully designed hotel tucked in a corner with lovely views out to the ocean. Amenities were all modern and top quality. The food was fine. Our room was very nice, but the comments about no privacy around the bathroom area are very true. The service was generally very good, with only a few odd exceptions. The spa was also lovely and we not enjoyed our services. Would definitely recommend staying here!

This Hotel is amazing and has great amenities. The beach area is very nice but you do need water shoes as it is all rocks. We stayed in a suite which was quiet and remotely located at the back of the Hotel. it was a bit of a walk and multiple elevators to get to the room. The reason for the 4 star review is because of the room arrangement. All of the rooms have an open plane and there is not a door in the bathroom. There was an opening between the bathroom sink and the bedroom. for a Suite it had no privacy. I absolutely hated this about the room.

Food at this resort is very bad. Not a single bar or restaurant on the property has good food or good service. Considering that this resort is remote the quality of food becomes essential. Cleaning staff and spa services are outstanding. Concierge could be more helpful.

Wow, the hotel was absolutely amazing—the food, the common areas, and the service were all top-notch! But, oh no, our car got scratched in the hotel parking lot, and it’s a real bummer. We tried to get help, but it seemed like no one could figure out what to do. They said the cameras weren’t focused on our car, which is a bit frustrating.

Check in (which I had already done online) was frosty. We were early so reception said they would take our bags and have them delivered to the room when it was ready at 2pm. Went to the room about 2.30 and no bags. Reception frosty when we asked for our bags. Oh, and then the tussle for a couple of glasses of chilled white wine at their Trapiche restaurant. Sent them back as warm white wine (served in plastic glasses btw, this is supposed to be a great dining experience). Came back with also warm white wine. Sent back again, I said I'd pay for our water but not the wine and wanted to leave. She came back saying it wasn't chilled as was in the plastic glasses and gave us proper glasses, showing us a chilled bottle of wine. Much better (still not super chill). Then when the bill came she tried to charge us 8 EUR a glass not 7 advertised, then said that it was because she had given us a different wine (which we had not asked for and btw only one white wine by the glass). JUST SERVE CHILLED WHITE WINE. Other than that; breakfasts very very good with plenty of choice. Overall the hotel is way too dark. Ocean room fine but not lush, not enough plugs.

For a 5 star resort one would assume things like bathrobes and slippers would be part of the room, and that was missing. Also, limited pool lounge chairs and you have to pay to use the lounge chairs it is not included in your stay. Overall nice resort it is clean, staff is friendly, rooms a cleanyou have the small town within walking distance to enjoy.

Our stay at the Savoy did not live up to expectations. Given its high rating and 5-star status, we anticipated a seamless, high-class experience, but instead found ourselves constantly being asked to pay extra for basic amenities — €70 per bed to lie by the pool, €35 per person to use the sauna, breakfast not included, and so on.

The food was well below standard: dry, lacking flavour, and served with underwhelming service in the restaurants. The building itself is undeniably beautiful, but overall, the experience felt far from the premium quality we expected from such a renowned hotel. We left feeling disappointed rather than indulged.

I stayed at Saccharum Resort & Spa and while the stunning views are an obvious highlight, what really stood out to me was the hotel’s design.

It honours its past as a former sugar cane factory — with original machinery cleverly integrated into the lobby and hallways. Think softened brutalism: raw textures balanced by warm materials, plenty of natural light, and an organic palette that ties everything back to the surrounding mountains. The attention to detail is impressive!!!

Our room was gorgeous — it overlooked the ocean, and with the mountains rising just beside us, we felt perfectly tucked between both. A rare and calming combination.

Even when the hotel was busy, it never felt crowded. There are multiple lounging areas, and we always found a spot to relax. The pools were a highlight — especially the indoor one, which is beautifully designed, heated, and great for cooler days or when you want a break from the sun. The large window looking out at the mountains makes being indoors feel like part of the experience.

The food was varied and healthy, and we appreciated how the hotel clearly communicated when breakfast would be busy — a small but thoughtful detail that made a difference. And if you’re looking for more variety, there are plenty of restaurants nearby.

The staff were consistently courteous, multilingual, and genuinely helpful — from check-in to daily service.

Saccharum strikes a rare balance: thoughtful design, warm hospitality, and a peaceful atmosphere.

This hotel is really amazing I feel like the pictures don't do it justice the pictures are nice that's why I picked this hotel but staying here was a completely different experience and feeling the staff where great especially the staff in the premium lounge I don't noticed I booked for that package but it's a must you get daily breakfast and a evening snack free drinks and it's expensive it's own deck you get access to the spa which is the most discreet and exclusive spa I've been to that line made our trip magical you the spa is down a huge stair case into a hidden oasis in the middle of the hotel completely amazing I can't say enough the hotel it's self is away from tourist attractions bit we wanted that rent a car be cautious they like to drive very fast just book this hotel you will not regret it , the price is high but the experience is well worth it

Only negative I would say is all the fees and automatic tips taken out. I did not like how they added tips on to all meals at the location. So if you tipped yourself they ended up taking additional money for another tip. Very misleading.

Let’s start with the positive, the resort itself is beautiful and the views unmatched. If you are looking for a more remote location and to mostly stay at the property this place is for you as there are not many restaurants that are walkable and most tours won’t pick up from this location without additional cost. Overall lighting in the resort is dark giving it a bit of a dreary vibe. They call themselves a 5 star resort but definitely don’t give that level of service and try to up charge you at every corner. They have a beautiful pool but charge extra to sit at the loungers by the pool which by the way most of the time are empty. We decided to pay the premium for a chair (35 Euros each) only to find it was broken and the area was filled with cobwebs. Definitely not worth the “upgrade” considering other guests who had not paid utilized the space as well. We brought our concerns to the manager and were told they would look into it but we never heard back. The room layout is perfect for couples but if you are staying with a friend, it offers zero privacy as there is no shower door and you can see into the shower from the bedroom. The restaurants we tried had good drinks but mediocre food. Lastly, you can only exchange your beach/pool towels once per day during a certain time slot. I have been to many resorts and have never heard of such a thing. I don’t know about anyone else but I don’t like to reuse a towel that was wet, I have been sweating on, and has sunscreen all over it.

Eco friendliness is poor. No recyclables bins. Much too keen to remove towels from room on rails and replace with fresh. Too many cards and notices on paper in rooms. Lights on at all times and turndown service adds lights on when rooms are empty. Loo rolls wasted by putting unnecessary points on papers which I have to waste as I hate people pawprints on loo rolls we use. Too many individual packages in rooms.

But- we love it! The facilities are second to none it’s clean fresh and the club and its staff are wonderful.

The hotel it’s too dark on my opinion. The A/C in my room didn’t work the entire stay, the explanation was that in my floor was two pregnant women that wanted warmer temperatures… so the room wasn’t as comfortable as it could have been if it was cooler. The location is good if you want to explore the mid/ west area of the island.

Overrated and overpriced hotel. The rooms are not soundproof and in need of maintenance. The shower head had limescale build up meaning it was spraying in all directions making showering a very unpleasant and uncomfortable task. When asking reception shortly after checkin if the room could be swapped with a bathtub room instead of a shower, the answer was “I don’t know” without any kind of follow-up or intention to check. After 3 attempts of finding out if this was possible, we were told only the suites have bathtubs available which suggested the receptionist didn’t know anything about the hotel.
Bathroom seals lacking and cleanliness of the bidet and toilet unit not as expected from a hotel that claims a lot.
The cherry on top of the cake was an ants invasion that we had in the room, and we shortly discovered after check out that these had now reached everywhere inside all our luggage - what a joy!
As most of the hotel facilities come with a hefty additional charge (on top of the already pricey room hire) we were not able to enjoy the “spa resort” this claims to be.
Beware they hold a pretty high credit card payment when checking in which most visitors we checked in alongside pushed back on.
The only upside was that our parking charge was written off at checkout when we discovered other facilities and bar consumption was charged against our room even though we hadn’t used those services.
Overall a disappointing experience and will not return.

The building was originally a Sugercane factory and the conversion has retained the dark hues and colours making the hotel warm and cosy.

Our booking was for family of 4 and we booked into one of the garden pool suites. The package was b&b and came with an upgrade to the “premium service”. I would say the latter is well worth having as it gives you free access to the underground car park, the spa and an upstairs lounge with great views and where you can have breakfast (from a menu) and drinks and snacks. Really made the stay even better.

The bedroom & attached lounge was large but had some quirky design issues. Eg the shower had no door or the bedroom was open to the basin area. Ok if there are two of you but needed a bit better planning when 4.

This is a great hotel and as it was s not in Funchal (30 min drive) is much more relaxed and a spa.

We had a pool suite for a family of 4, and the room was enormous and so luxurious. The bed was very comfortable, and my children said that the sofa bed was too. We absolutely loved the pool on the balcony.
Breakfast was very busy, and an amazing number of guests somehow manage to drop food on the floor. The staff were quick to clean it up and replenish the food. We had buffet dinner once and that was really nice. There was a good selection of food that was constantly topped up.
The pools were excellent, but it was slightly annoying that other guests hogged the sunbeds by placing towels on them early in the day but didn't go there until later.

I am sad to write this review as we absolutely loved this hotel a few years ago. Last year there were signs of change and this year very clearly things had changed. Although, we were given the room we requested, so Thankyou😊
Firstly, when we arrived on my way to the room, I saw a mouse running frantically through the dark corridor🐁. I let reception know and their response surprised me. They just said ‘Thankyou for letting us know, we will inform housekeeping’. That was it, we heard no more! My husband followed it up the next day, and we felt they were trying to say I didn’t see it! They explained they have a company come in to control all pests and that the company only came the week before. It was not a good start.
As others have pointed out, the sunbeds around the infinity pool come at a cost! Hence they are nearly always empty, which doesn’t look good.
This is the first time we have not had the premium package. The reason being it has gone up substantially! It does influence the whole feel of the stay. For example, whilst the breakfast was very good, the experience was awful….searching for a table, finding staff to clear it, queuing for omelettes or poached eggs, and the noise level was dreadful.
I could go on, but I will just say, it was a wonderful hotel, but for us, not anymore.

Overall our stay was great, the hotel is absolutely beautiful like the rest of the island. The front desk staff and house keeping were wonderful, the only note I would add is that the servers in the restaurants sometimes seemed less than friendly and at points annoyed with seemingly simple requests. I would recommend staying here but given the price point I would have appreciated a more welcoming environment when dining with them. There are some wonderful restaurants in the area that you can go to as an alternative.

Amazing resort on the edge of the Atlantic. We rented a car from the airport for our stay. Driving conditions are unfamiliar for North American drivers (lots of high inclines and declines with blind turns etc) but the roads are in excellent condition.

The resort has a relaxing atmosphere, variety of food options, and good leisure. It may not offer the excess and variety of Mexican resorts but the scenery more than makes up for it. It has been our favourite place to visit thus far and we are already trying to find the next trip to return.

A beautiful hotel with a lovely infinity pool overlooking the sea, and the staff are excellent.

The food was good but expensive. We found it much better value to eat at the nearby restaurants at the marina.

We found our room and balcony (with half ocean view) lovely, but the bathroom facilities are a very odd design and lack privacy. It's very strange that there's no shower room door, particularly given that the shower entrance is opposite the main hotel room door!

I would recommend this hotel for a luxury stay in a beautiful location.

Very nice hotel with a beautiful view of the ocean. We loved the infinity pool. We didn't love the bathroom set up which included a shower workout a door. Pool area on top floor was nice but lacked stable wifi and no bar service at the chairs. You have to walk up to a bar to get a drink. There was not a store in the hotel so had to walk 3 blocks to get sunscreen.

Extremely thoughtful and stylish hotel with good service. Had a spacious ocean view suite, the view was just amazing. Definitely would return anytime.

What a beautiful Resort! Calheta was the perfect final destination after a busy few weeks travelling. The resort was extremely clean and well kept. We were blown away by the beauty everyday. The included breakfast buffet was phenomenal as well as the views while eating! I would suggest not to wait and plan on doing your laundry here as it was quite costly. The resort itself was pricey in regards to dinner so I would suggest venturing into Calheta for dinner at some point! We did have a couple spiders in our bed, not much the resort can do about this but just a friendly reminder to check your sheets before going to bed, my boyfriend got bit while sleeping and had a reaction over the next week. Overall we had a really great experience and would recommend anyone to stay here! Such a beautiful resort!

This was our second visit to Saccharum and it was as excellent as our first visit. First class service and facilities throughout. Since our last visit there have been a range of subtle but welcome upgrades as well as some changes to the menus. We loved the spa experience and the beach club on the weekend evening and the new fire pit dining experience was superb. If you’re looking for a modern resort experience with a contemporary vibe this is well worth a visit. Premium Package is highly recommended.

Great stay but poor service

The hotel is beautiful and highly designed but the corridors and public indoor area are too dark. More important, the service is very average and for this kind of price range we expected much better service and care from the staff.

Very comfortable stay at the Saccharum Hotel for our family. The breakfast spread included in our room was fantastic and appreciated as an easy start to the day. There was nice live music every night which we enjoyed too! Rooms were comfortable, modern, and well maintained. Internet was great. Service was excellent. No complaints here!

Secluded location on the western side of the island. Dining options aren’t great in the area, but that’s the price you pay for seclusion. Calheta Green is awesome and only a 15 minute drive away. The hotel itself has a great breakfast, a cool beach club with great food and drinks and good live music. The atmosphere of the hotel is also very unique and we loved the design. It feels like something out of the Bond movie, Quantum of Solace. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a place in Calheta.
