No chef, no bar staff. A terrible dinner for which we waited 110 minutes. The chef left 6 months ago and they're using her assistant.

While most staff were kind, many needed training and support. They're expected to cover reception, bar, waitressing. We felt bad for them.

Expect to wait aaaages for a drink.

Management: Employ a chef and bar staff and look after your staff better.

The gym is unhygienic with broken AC and no means of cleaning mats or equipment.

The pool is unsighly with missing tiles, green from algae and there are insufficient parasols. Nobody bothers to arrange the sun-loungers in the morning.

A feeling grew during our 9-day stay of not being looked after, of management paying lip-service to the guests experience and directors only interested in money.

We had to ask for shower gel daily as the maid failed to replace empties. We were given half-used bottles by reception staff and felt a burden for asking.

Upon arrival our room lacked AC and reception tried to fob us off. Our eventual room had a broken towel hook and dodgy balcony door. We awoke to the neighbouring cockerel.

The hotel is in a beautiful setting, close to lovely spots, but fails to achieve a 4-star standard and feels tired. A few licks of hastily-applied paint won't suffice. It clearly has problems.

Our disappointing stay was made worse by the manager not responding to our complaint as promised. Very poor.

We won't return and we don't recommend this hotel.

This place holds up to the cleanliness values! Keep up the fantastic job. Best part overall though, is the location this property is at. Essentially close enough to go to Sao Vicente and Port Moniz in no time (by car) but by walking would be challenging but easy! Just be careful of the cats in the area, they tend to sleep under your vehicle. Also for amenities, it’s great, just needed more modernized fitness equipment for me personally. I will recommend this place and hopefully come back! Thanks again to the wonderful front desk services!

A very good stay but a few issues which the receptionist Joanna sorted quickly and efficiently. The restaurant and hot tube/sauna which were supposed to be open by 1st September were still closed by 1st October. Car park is small and sometimes had to park on road.

Very nice one week stay

Everything very nice, on site facilities are surprisingly very good, plenty to do if you feel the need including crazy golf which was fun and is free of charge like all of the facilities on site.

To criticise would be picky, it is majorly a site for older couples and groups as the majority of Madeira is however that has little to do with the hotel and I’d a benefit to most people (no screaming children)

Lovely hotel in a great location.

We stayed two nights in a lovely bedroom looking out to the mountains and the clock tower. The hotel staff are friendly and the breakfast was great. In the evenings the hotel has a fixed price menu which was good value for money and tasty. We also eat out at a restaurant just 6 minutes walk away- Lavrador, which also does great food. Best to book if you want one of the tables outside with a view.

The hotel is located only 10 minutes away from a fantastic levada walk in Ginhas. So remember to bring your head torches. It is also ideally situated to get to Encumeada pass and the stunning levada do norte.

I’m not normally fussy about the welcome I get from hotel reception but the lady looked rather surprised by my arrival and behaved as though she couldn’t find my reservation. I was initially shown the wrong (and cheaper) room despite handing over my reservation paperwork which clearly indicated the room type. When I was eventually shown to the superior room I discovered that it was very small and I had difficulty in opening my large suitcase. There was a chest of drawers, cupboard and a table with a small old style TV with 3 English news channels. There was nothing to sit on apart from a small bench in the window and there was no fridge. The safe was only available to be used at extra cost! There weren’t enough electrical sockets so I had to unplug a bedside light. Throughout my stay there was an annoying buzzing noise in the room. The bathroom had a large sink surround and they provided good sized towels. The toiletries not replenished at all during my stay and no tissues were provided. The bed was very hard and had a stained blanket. Breakfast was fairly poor with limited choice but at least they produced freshly cooked eggs. The croissants were made with wrong type of pastry which meant they were very heavy and hard except for the last day when they used puff pastry. The Wi-Fi was ok and just good enough for Skype. There was nearly enough parking for everyone. Shutters blocked out the light. Good views of the valley and terraces. Poor bar food at night.

Damp and dark and certainly NOT 4 stars!

Difficult to find old fashioned hotel. Smelt damp and when raining, which it does a lot, water dripping everywhere inside. Whilst everywhere was spotlessly clean, the whole place looked tired: faded carpets on landings, old fashioned artwork on walls etc. The room itself smelt of damp, the curtains were faded, wardrobe had sliding doors which didn't slide and contained my bug bear of an insufficient number of broken hotel coat hangers!
All in all a hotel stuck in the 70's and definitely only 3 stars.

We throughly enjoyed our stay at Estalagem do vale. The staff were very helpful, polite and friendly. The food at the hotel was excellent and we were lucky to enjoy some live traditional music on the Saturday evening. This hotel has amazing views and is a peaceful relaxing place to stay.

Comfortable hotel in amazing location

We stayed in this hotel for a week. The room was comfortable and included a mini fridge. We enjoyed breakfast each day with a good variety of fruits, bread, cooked breakfast, yoghurt and cereals. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There is a sauna, turkish bath and jacuzzi as well as outdoor pool. The mini golf is fun and there is a pool table and table tennis. It's only a 5 minute drive down to the Sao Vicente sea front, but it would be a steep walk.

Hotel was not a 4 star more like a 3 star... i.e. no mini fridge in room... Basic old school tv with crappy picture, however the food was good Breakfast simple good food..Dinner was nice freshly prepared. Swimming Pool very small. The staff were very friendly and very helpful on a day to day basis in proving tips on what to do where to go. I now have very toned legs from climbing the hill from Sao Viencete to the Hotel :-)

Beautiful situation but not 4*

Food at breakfast was uninspired, (we did not eat at the hotel in the evening as the dinner menu looked less interesting than the seafront restaurants in Sao Vincente where we ate and which were also much cheaper.)
Pool was basic, common parts adequate. Lighting in rooms poor, particularly bathroom.

So very pleasant but not a 4* hotel.

Lovely hotel in a beautiful location

This small hotel is on the North of the Madeira which is much quieter and unspoiled than the Funchal side. It is in a wonderful location with stunning views of the mountains and sea and as it is a bit cooler after dark the staff light a real fire which was very romantic.

One downside is its a bit out of the way so you do need to hire a car if you want to stay here.

Good location for exploring this part of island

After spending a week in Funchal, we moved to Sao Vicente for three days, so that our trips would be shorter.
The hotel is not easy to find by searching for the address - both car's GPS and our own did not find it. However, searching for a POI (point of interest) did the trick. There are also a few road signs pointing to the hotel.
The room we got had a view towards the beautiful valley. Room seemed to us a bit outdated, with the common parts of the hotel receiving most of the attention, for e.g. on the 1st floor there's a sledge similar to those used for the Toboggan Run in Funchal.
Weather seems to be a bit chillier in this area than in south / Funchal. We did not expected all our mornings to be dull during June.

A wonderful spot

The hotel is reached in a comfortable 50-minute drive from the airport using the new roads. The mountain passes, which are unmissable, are best left to a fresh day.
The hotel staff were unfailingly friendly and obliging. The walking folder had disappeared but the reception staff were able to advise us of a nearby levada walk.
Our initial room was very disappointing, rather dark with no view at all from a little terrace squashed behind a hedge. Halfway through our stay, we were able to upgrade to a beautiful 2nd-floor room with a balcony and superb views of the mountains - well worth the 15 euro supplement.
A very good breakfast catering for all tastes. Portions for dinner, as in all the island's restaurants, are generous.
The gardens are very pretty with plenty of areas to sit. We enjoyed the mini-golf, which was well-maintained. The swimming pool was lovely but disappointing that the surrounding cover is permanently on at this time of the year so it wasn't possible to sit by the pool and enjoy the view. (However, it did mean the water was warm and there was no chill when you got out!)
The courtesy bus down to the centre of the village does not run until later in the year. It's a good half an hour's steep walk and nice to do once but a taxi back is a good idea!

I would not return to many hotels that I have stayed in, but I would definitely return to this one.

Flight was delayed so arrived in dark, hotel directions linked to their site leave a lot to be desired. But a member of staff drove out to where we were when we phoned so that we could follow him back and also provided us with toasted sandwiches and chips on our arrival despite being midnight.

Stunning Madeira

Quiet hotel with lovely staff. We were pleasantly surprised by the standard of this hotel for the price that we paid. Out of seven nights we only had one lot of \"noisy neighbours\" but after speaking to the male receptionist the problem was solved. Every day our toilet broke but this did not bother us too much as we went out after our sumptuous breakfast and did not return until early evening. The view from our room was lovely, mountains, sea and the Senhora Fatima Church. The restaurant served well priced, well presented, very good food and well priced wine. We definitely want to return to Madeira and would stay at this hotel, we have recommended it to our relatives who are looking to visit Madeira soon.

Lovely Hotel, great views & staff

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel, the staff were excellent - friendly, great service and would do anything to help and more. The views were lovely and in a nice quiet location. Be aware you would need to use taxis, buses or hire a car to get about. We used a taxi with a great guy called Duncan recommended by the hotel, who gave us a tour of the island which was a great day out and for other little run arounds. Also took the local bus into Funchal which was convenient too. A great holiday and we hope that the people who own this hotel value the wonderful staff they have - they really were so hard working and always with a smile. Thank you to them all for making our holiday so enjoyable.

a hidden away gem

This inn is hidden away in the hills above Sao Vicente with great view across the valley. Great reception and explanations about facility. Free WiFi in very comfortable lounge, with bar which also serves coffee and tea. Excellent restaurant which serves set menu of three courses ( 2 choices of mains) for 18euros per person. Good wines. Would highly recommend this place!

Wonderful setting, quiet and spectacular views. Lovely hotel, small and beautifully decorated. Rooms are a reasonable size and well designed and well presented and very pleasant. Staff are WONDERFUL. Friendly, very helpful. Their language skills are awesome! We loved staying here. The food in the restaurant was very good and good value - we didn't want to eat anywhere else. Sao Vicente is a lovely contrast to the busyness of Funchal but is only a 20 minute drive away. It is a great base for exploring Madeira and is just such a friendly hotel. We will stay there again!

Perfect place to relax

This hotel is a gem hidden away in a village on the north of the island. Beautiful views, such friendly staff, and stunning rooms in the old part of the hotel. The bar could do with a bit of an upgrade (and the piano a tune!) but other than that I think it's fabulous value for money, and I shal no doubt return.

The hotel was nice, cosy and clean. Price/performance ratio is great! It's close to sights like Las Grutas, the small city center of Sao Vicente, the beachside and many walking tracks up in the hills. The breakfast buffet is great and the hotel staff is nice.

Best Deal Ever, but dont expect smiles..

-with or without hotel, the flight-hotel package was the same, wow, that was one great deal.
-one of the best locations on the island, away from heavy tourism, weather of course more sporadic as at base of mountains, and early march but could fire a high powered bibi gun to the sea
-great access to all the wonderful hiking and scenery on the north end
-hotel is 6 years old, great ocean view and mountain views. located on west side of valley, looking directly out at famous white chapel on hlll. views comprised about 160 full degrees, north to sea and beginning of confined valley that hotel resides in, and up towards mountain pass leading to funchal
-about half hour to funchal
-you need a car here
-never found supermercado near by, but found one in porto moniz 15 klicks west
-nice choice of casual dining along the saterfront, around 5-8 resaurants, all decent to really good, all affordable

-hotel has open feel, nice fireplace with huge kush leather chairs, multi lingual library, but limited english, bar access anytime, just ring the bell. beer 4.50 euro per half liter, bout twice what it is in town, but not bad and fresh. good scotch 4 bucks a pour
-great morning breakfast included daily from 8-10. british and continental, hot and cold, nice coffee
-staff very attendant at meal time but not in your grille. they like to pick where you sit, weird.
-dinner expensive but nice presentation and quality. Worth it maybe once or twice in a 1-2 week stay. expect 60 euro for a couple including wine
-swimming pool outside but covered and heated. hot tub not sufficiently heated and maybe not adequetely filtered or cleaned. sporadic operation, but they will turn up or on upon request, including sauna
-who needs a gym but they have a few basics

-staff is in general good, but not friendly, not helpful for tourism purposes, you must find and make your own way and plans, and dont expect gratefulness in disposition. they could definately use a class in friendliness, as most are quite dour. this, for us, was unexpecteldly important in satisfaction, and in fact what cost them another star. would it kill to say thank you or inquire about your stay or needs or any ovation at all please thank you.

if lounging by poolside in the sun is for you, then do not choose this mountainside hotel with views. if getting away from it and solo adventuring is it, then i think this hotel is good. strange mini golf course not in use below rooms.

Lovely people to stay with in a modern 4* Hotel!

Away from the madding tourist crowd in beautiful surroundings, not a lot for teengers to do unless you return to Funchal which is 45m drive away.
Lovely walks and countryside to explore.
Variety of excellent snack-bars and other restaurants in Sao Vicente, Seixal and Porto Muniz along the North Coast to explore but really the hotel restaurant takes a lot of beating and is not overly expensive.
Madeira is probably best for no more than 10 days to explore unless youre planning on a lot of Levada walks in the mountains for which this out of Funchal hotel is ideal.
If i did it again i would stay for a couple of days in Funchal and then have a few days in the 'sticks' at Sao Vicente to explore non touristy areas.
Agreed about the need for your own transport out of Funchal.

Das Hotel liegt wirklich toll und idyllisch, gegenüber immer sichtbar die tolle weiße Spitzen-Kirche. Leider sind bei einigen, so auch unserem, Zimmer die Klimaanlagen ausgefallen. Es wurde mehrere Tage notiert, dann ein Techniker geschickt, mit den Schultern gezuckt... aber der angefragte Zimmerwechsel wurde aus Kapazitätsgründen verneint. Dafür wurde neue Kunden, auch nur für eine Nacht dorthin begleitet. In Anbetracht des feuchten Klimas der Insel sind nasse Sachen ohne Klimaanlage nur mit einem Mini-Ölradiator unmöglich zu trocknen. Alle Kleidung im Schrank, im Koffer und im Zimmer waren morgens klamm. Uns wurde angeboten, sie vor dem Anziehen morgens in einen Trockner an der Rezeption zu legen. Wie süß, aber absolut unpraktisch. Bei unserem 9tägigen Aufenthalt gab es absolut KEINE LÖSUNG. Morgens war das Wasser am Zimmerfenster von INNEN.
Das Essen(tägliches 3Gänge-Menü) war für 20€/Person schmackhaft und ein großes Lob an die Küche. Der ältere Herr der Frühstückscrew war sehr umsichtig und bemüht, schnell aufzufüllen. In seiner Abwesenheit waren Fotos für Insta oder Facebook wichtiger als ein nachgefülltes Buffet. Der Pool war immer sauber und vorbereitet. Die angebotene Sauna für 5€/Person/Stunde wurde 1x von uns genutzt, aber bitte bis 19Uhr anmelden, denn danach kann niemand den Schalter drehen/anschalten, was keine Flexibilität zeigt, zumal bei nur einer 2Mann-Kabine mit defekten Liegen(die schnell reparierbar wären) ohne Service eine Zeitbegrenzung seltsam anmutet.

Een hotel weg van de drukte met zeer tof, behulpzaam personeel. (Tip: leer een paar woorden Portugees). Er is geen restaurant maar je kan er een paar eenvoudige maaltijden nuttigen. Het ontbijt is prima maar eenvoudig. Het hotel is 20 jaar oud en dat merk je. Alles is in orde maar een opfrisbeurt kan niet te lang meer op zich laten wachten. Te weinig parkeerplaatsen, maar het personeel lost dat op.

Er is een groot aantal negatieve reviews over dit hotel te vinden. Was eerlijk gezegd ook bang dat we in een uitgeleefd oord terecht zouden komen. En dat is absoluut niet het geval. De kamers zijn ruim en schoon, het uitzicht is fantastisch en het ontbijtbuffet meer dan goed. Zij hebben in coronatijd misschien lang onvoldoende inkomsten gehad en zodoende wat onderhoud laten liggen en maar daar is nu geen enkele sprake meer van. En bovendien een pluim voor het personeel! Het enige wat het hotel zou kunnen overwegen is om de overkapping van het zwembad te verwijderen. Het neemt een deel van het uitzicht richting de bergketens weg.

Très bon séjour dans l'établissement. Le personnel est à l'écoute et serviable. Les lits sont confortables, l'environnement est au calme. La décoration est un peu ancienne mais tout est propre et on en manque de rien.

Très bel endroit nous somme ravis

Dans l'ensemble c'est idéal. La vue, le petit déjeuné, le jardin, la piscine, le parking, le prix , la décoration, la propreté...
Le moins bien. De petits détails mais qui au quotidien ont leur importance. Le matelas inconfortable, le bruit des toilettes (fuite?) et de la climatisation (pas toujours?), chaises du balcon \"en fin de vie\" (coussin obligatoire).

Nous avons vraiment apprécié cet endroit. Grande gentillesse et un parfait exemple de l'hospitalité portugaise à l'accueil (merci pour le vin de Madère et les petits gâteaux) et au petit déjeuner. Notre fils était heureux de jouer au mini golf dans le jardin. La chambre était très propre avec une belle vue sur l'océan et les montagnes. Nous reviendrons avec plaisir.

Authentieke accomodatie, de rust van de omgeving en van de gasten is enorm aangenaam. Uitgebreid ontbijt. Origineel is de minigolf. De ligruimte bij het zwembad is niet aangenaam. Enkele harde houten ligstoelen (te weinig), op een betonnen inham. Wij zijn dan maar op het (mooie!)grasveldje gaan liggen, omdat er toch geen gasten aan de tafeltjes zaten. De kamers zijn niet stil, zoals wel in de beschrijving stond. Er is geen waterkoker en geen ijskastje op de kamer. Deze laatste is overal weggenomen. Het personeel heeft daarover bij elke gast een andere uitleg. Bij ons bv dat het in onze kamer weg was omdat de vorige gasten het stuk hadden gemaakt. Uiteindelijk wist de baas te zeggen dat ze idd overal weg waren, reden Corona... Verschillende andere gasten hadden een klacht over hun kamer en het personeel belooft er iets aan te doen, maar dat gebeurt niet. De jongen die ons ontving was een ramp, mompelde een antwoord waar je niks mee was. Nieuw? probleem van de taal? Het andere personeel sprak vlot Engels.

Overall disappointing, not near a 4 star hotel

First of all I booked a room with sea-view, but received a room with view on a 3m stone wall. They weren't willing to change it.

The wellness are is mostly closed (jakuzzi not working). You could use the sauna etc. for an extra prize, but it is obvious that it hasn't been in operation for a long time.
Restaurant also closed bc lacking the personal. Bar area is nice, but very hard to order anything, as you rarely see somebody around there.

The whole hotel seem to had been a nice 4-star hotel 5-10 years ago, but it's obvious it has been neglected since then and management doesn't seem to care too much. Everything is pretty old in the room and lot's of stuff is missing or is not working.

The staff is generally friendly but unfortunately not really trained and unprofessional. Like they give the job of the receptionists to nice people who have no idea what to do and say \"good luck\".

Overall currently it's a 2-Star hotel.
I would recommend the management to either invest in a huge renovation and organize the things better, or to decrease the price and the rating to 2-stars. Both ways guests would be satisfied but currently the hotel doesn't deliver what it promisses.

Het personeel was erg vriendelijke en behulpzaam, de kamer werd prima schoongemaakt. De kamer was echter erg gehorig. Het ontbijt wordt pas vanaf 8 uur geserveerd.
Mooie omgeving, kamer heeft echter alleen zeezicht als je over het balkon naar buiten hangt en naar uiterst links kijkt.

Le personnel est charmant mais Ce n’est pas un 4 étoiles, les prestations sont équivalentes à un 2 étoiles.
Hotel vieillissant, chambres vieillottes, et petites , piscine pas chauffée, pas d’eau ni bouilloire ni thé ou café dans les chambres.
Petit déjeuner très décevant, rien de frais, tout est industriel.

Ottima posizione in mezzo alle montagne. Molto pulito. Struttura molto carina ma purtroppo il malfunzionamento dell’aria condizionata ha rovinato il nostro soggiorno. Infatti abbiamo dormito male perche la camera era molto caldo. Abbiamo segnalato il problema ma non è stato fatto niente.
Buona la colazione ma con le regole covid c’è bisogno di più personale

Location is great, looking out over the North side (the green side) of Madeira. It pays to have a room with balcony so you can enjoy the view from your room.
Daily fresh products are shown upon entry of the hotel restaurant. We choose the filet mignon and it was excellent! Breakfast buffet is good but not special.
The hotel is quiet and relaxing with friendly personnel.

L'hôtel est très agréable, la vue est magnifique et le personnel (qui parle très bien français) très professionnel. Nous avons dîné au restaurant de l'hôtel, le repas est vraiment de qualité même si le choix est un peu restreint. Pour aller dîner ailleurs il faut prendre la voiture. Le parking est un peu petit et le petit déjeuner n'a rien d'exceptionnel. La piscine lorsqu il fait beau est parfaite pour se reposer après une belle journée de randos. Il manque un petit frigo dans la chambre et le jacuzzi était trop froid, il ne nous a pas été possible de nous y baigner. Dans l'ensemble le séjour à été très agréable et je conseille vraiment cet hôtel.
