The property is lovely and in a beautiful location. The staff are excellent and very friendly. Sadly, the room was very dusty and the underside of the non-slip shower mat had black mould/mildew.
The restaurant looked beautiful but unfortunately the chef used so much salt the food was inedible. Even the breakfast was smothered in rocks of salt. The staff told me that it was 2 different chefs but clearly they were trained in the same way. None of our party could eat their dinner and we couldn't cope with the breakfast either.

We enjoyed our stay here in a lovely area, countryside views and peaceful. We stayed 3 nights and the menu was small and unchanged. Small tweeks to the special. Booked a room with the terrace which was lovely as we had excellent weather. Generally the room was well designed, like 2 comfy chairs not 1 as is often the case. Bathroom looked smart but usual no place to put wash bags, no towel rail so wet towels on back of door hooks ...not thought through.

Lovely location, great service with happy and helpful staff. Food a bit on the expensive side and limited dinner menu, breakfast was really good. Room ok but the showroom was extremely cold. Everything you needed in the room and fresh milk for drinks. Big plus was a served at the table breakfast and not a buffet.

Not what I hoped for but wonderful breakfast
On arrival, we were asked to pay, despite paying in advance. This was quickly rectified, however, the amount the hotel wanted to charge me was less than I had paid. I contacted Hotels.com about this, asking for a refund of the difference and after a few days was told they did not receive a reply from the Welldiggers and so could not comply with my request.
We stayed in room 7. The bathroom was much smaller than anticipated, with the sink being in the bedroom area. I didn't notice this on the main website and it was a disappointment having such a tiny bathroom. Photos showed robes in the room, although these were not provided.
The room was very cold, as expected for the time of year but we were able to heat it with the oil filled radiator provided. There was a thermostat on the wall but no real evidence of the heat source.
The carpet in the room was noticeably grubby. The bed was the kind which zips together. I've never experienced a problem with one of these beds in other hotels, however, the join was very noticeable in this bed. The worst part for us was the fire escape light that was illuminated in green all night above the door and gave us a terrible night's sleep.I expected better facilities from a Signature room.
There was no one available for me to talk to at checkout about the room. The staff member was on a call and didn't ask if we'd had a nice stay, just took the key. Someone else said they just worked in the kitchen. The breakfast was amazing, one of the best.

Both the pub and the rooms were excellent! All the staff were attentive and friendly and the views are simple incredible! We had dinner and breakfast there and couldn’t fault anything about either. The mini doughnuts were a highlight!

I was truly impressed with The Welldigger's Arms, I loved the room it was just perfect. Ground coffee sachets and cafetierre plus quality teabag options. Lovely view across the countryside. Nice and quiet, good parking, restaurant was also very nice as was the food.

Lovely place to stay and eat. We stayed in one of the luxury rooms and it was worth the extra. Really lovely individual patio with very nice garden furniture, umbrella and plants overlooking the Downs. Bed was comfy. We ate dinner in the restaurant, suggest you check the online menu to see the current offering. Enjoyed the steak and the chicken supreme. The online photo shows the back of the restaurant and pub and the luxury patio rooms are in the building to the left of the photo. The front of the pub is on a fairly busy road. There is plenty of parking. I thought at first that there might be a lot of traffic noise, but the rooms at the back were fairly quiet. Note that there are no staff on site overnight but an emergency phone number was provided.

Excellent Country Inn, but late starting breakfast
The Welldiggers Arms is a characterful country inn with excellent food, a good range of beers and wines and friendly, helpful staff. Rooms are compact but very well appointed and comfortable. Just one point lets it down: breakfast is not served before 8.30 a.m. which, for anyone having to make a prompt start to the day, is quite a bit too late. The Welldiggers packed us up a couple of croissants/pain au chocolat instead, but of course that's never going to replace the enjoyment of a full breakfast. If breakfast were available from, say, 7.30 a.m. onwards, this would merit 5 stars, and I'd strongly encourage the Welldiggers to try to fix this omission, because it's all that lets an otherwise superb country inn down.

Great views but some let downs
Amazing views but paper thin walls so if you get honeymooners (or whatever they were on) next door good luck! Plus there seems to be a recycling or dump site opposite with hgvs starting to unload from around 6am. Ran out of steak and salmon on first day but they had new stock second day. Food was very nice but we both had bad stomachs on each night, fish batter smelled bad and veg with steak smelled bit funky too. Beer was first class and Butcombe have great scheme for Birthdays and midweek dining.

exceeded expectations! I feel like the photos don't do it justice. the room was lovely, great ameneities like the toieltries and coffee. the garden /terrace bit was our fave, so beautiful! me, my partner and our dog loved our stay. breakfast was so yummy also :)

We were made very welcome by the manageress which was much appreciated after a difficult day. The room was lovely with lots of luxury touches such as the complimentary lotions. We loved the decor, and the location is lovely, very quiet setting. It was an extremely hot night and although a fan was provided in the room, it wasn't enough to help. The food was nice - especially the breakfast - but the service in the evening was slow. We had to keep flagging the staff even though there weren't many people dining. Overall, recommended!

I paid £140.00 per night for this hotel and it was not up to scratch it needs a lot of work doing to it redecorating it the shower screen had black mould round it that should of been cleaned before anyone went in, I have taken photos if you would like to see them and the dining room was well over priced the only thing good about it the breakfast wasn’t bad

Arrived and was given the wrong room. When we were finally given the right room they hadn’t charged the hot tub and there was no bath as promised. It is a shame they made no effort to contact us regarding the lack of hot tub. The view from the room was really nice and dinner was very pleasant, but upon trying to sleep, we found it very difficult as it is next to a main road and so a bit noisy. Breakfast was not at the same level as dinner and service was slow. The actual room was very nice and well decorated.

There was a stunning view from the pub and beer garden and also from our room. The food and drink although not cheap was excellent and there was plenty of choice. Our room was clean and comfortable and perfect for our short stay. We would definitely stay again if visiting the area.

The service and friendly staff were excellent. We are dog owners and staff were wonderful with our dog. However, when we booked the room we were sent pics of room showing patio doors to the outside. The room we were allocated had only one small window which we couldnt use as the catch was broken. Unfortuneately, due to the hot weather (beyond your control) the room was unbearably hot. We were getting up at 5am and going to sit in our vehicle to cool down. This somewhat ruined our otherwise enjoyable stay. We even decided to leave a day early. We would stay again but not in that room.

Comfortable room, excellent and friendly service in the bar/restaurant and check in. Food was good, we had two dinners there, but the menu was a bit fussy, which limited rather than enhanced the choice. Food a little over priced too, even for West Sussex. Ambience of bar/dining area, and outside areas was excellent. This was my second visit.

This place was recommended by people we were going to see. We had an overnight stay. The staff were wonderful, food choice was varied and superbly cooked. My room was one of several in what appeared to be a converted outbuilding. It had a nice enough look to it but flimsy partition walls and a lack of double glazing meant I spent half the night awake listening to a competition between my neighbour's hacking cough and the (surprisingly busy) traffic on the A283.

Despite calling 2weeks ahead of our visit for a cot to be put in our room. We were still trying to chase down staff at the eleventh hour (1hr before my little ones bed time) for a cot to be provided to us. Note, although you are not told at booking, breakfast actually starts at 8:30am and not 7:30am as most normal accommodation/B&B establishments.

There was a bit of a hiccup at check in where the staff didnt realise we had booked 3 people for the room so we had to wait a short while for them to get the extra bed in but we were given complimentary tea.

A comedy of errors
Well intentioned staff, but a bit incompetent. There were issues with the booking, but apparently that's because of the way hotels.com books it, so if you have a complicated booking with multiple rooms and additions, call the property WELL IN ADVANCE. I had put all the details in and had a dialogue within the app with who I thought was the property. They confirmed everything including the extra cots and beds, but then I got multiple calls on the day of arrival asking the same questions. Also, the property contacted me for prepayment and my card kept getting declined. Turns out, this is not needed and I ended up paying on check out - completely unnecessary stress. The largest family got the smallest room and a broken cot. We were told to book in breakfast the night before which we did and arrived on time to find the pub locked. Turns out the manager overslept. At dinner one night and we asked for water for the table 4 times before it arrived with the wrong number of glasses.
All in all, friendly staff, clean room, great outdoor area. Just sort out the admin.

Very pleasant venue, with an upmarket pub bar serving high quality food, and chic, modern rooms directly overlooking excellent views of the South Downs.
Staff were friendly and helpful, and went out of there way to book me a taxi to my venue.
