Very disappointed - overpriced ‘ budget ‘ hotel

We paid over £1000 for a two night stay. The room was very very tired and felt grubby and dated. The room was worse than a budget hotel room. Despite the £500 a night price you have to pay extra to have a cooked breakfast and the self serve breakfast on offer is very poor. No table service and only coffee on offer is weak watery coffee via a thermos flask.

Not actually sure how they can justify the room price.

Bathroom in particular was very dated and grubby - shower is operated via attempting to run the cold and hot tap at the same time ( ! )

Shower curtain grubby and shower rail rusty ( like the bath taps )

Reception is always empty and unable to speak to anyone about the shocking standard of the room

Will not be staying again and emailing requesting a part refund…

A Stay with Highlights and Hiccups

The spa was lovely—slightly busy at times, but still a relaxing space with friendly staff throughout. One standout was the lady hosting breakfast, who was genuinely fantastic. She brought such warmth and energy to the room, greeting every guest with a cheerful hello and goodbye. Her attentiveness and positivity made a real difference to the start of each day and was easily one of the highlights of our stay.

There were a couple of small details around cleanliness that could use attention. In the breakfast area, the artwork frames on the right-hand side had a noticeable build-up of dust. Similarly, in the café, the lights hanging from the windowed back wall had cobwebs on the right side. These didn’t affect our overall experience, but they were worth noting.

The main issue during our stay was the lack of hot water in our room, both in the evening and the following morning. We were told there had been a boiler issue and that it had been resolved by morning, with instructions to run the tap. Unfortunately, this didn’t work. It was particularly inconvenient as we were trying to get ready for dinner, and given the cost of the stay, it was a disappointing part of the experience.

While we understand that technical issues can happen and may be outside the hotel’s control, what matters most is how those situations are handled. In this case, the response from reception felt indifferent and lacked empathy. We would have appreciated some form of gesture or acknowledgment to reflect the

I liked the calm environment and the kind welcoming when checking in. I like the softness of the bedding and for a single the bed was surprisingly comfy.

However, one the beds was very noisy in room 309.

I didn't like how I messaged before arriving about the request of the room being a twin and when we arrived and noticed it wasn't we asked nicely for our bedroom to be made into a twin and it took them over 2hrs to do so... Therefore We had to wait to get into bed, and we were tired and this was around 9.20, we checked in and mentioned about our room at 645pm. Also I didn't like how I had to clean the fan and remove an inch thick of dust just to be able to use it. Unfortunately I made a mess and left dust all over the floor, sorry. Once i noticed the mess I went to the bathroom to continue cleaning it over the sink.

I didn't like that when the shower was turnt on it would spray water out over the top the curtains because of connection on the shower head. Soaking everything near the bin, toilet and as far as the sink. Was slightly amusing to turn on the shower and get sprayed in the head... Especially when I didn't tell my guest.

My boyfriend and I particularly loved the pools, and just the amount of things you could do at this hotel, it was such a lovely time. We stayed a night and we were able to use the pool, and other amenities as much as we liked with no extra charge, as it was just a night.

The staff were super attentive and very kind and professional too ;) I must say a room that definitely stood out to us was the piano room, with the grand piano, a big checkers and chess game, and huge windows overlooking the pond. If you’ve watched the vampire diaries before, it was giving that vibe. It was darkly lit and had painting of dogs everywhere which was perfect ;)

Overall had such a good stay at Champneys and we’ll for sure be back !!

Some outside furniture was very ropey & needs replacing.

My stay at Champneys was better than I could have hoped for. The staff were very helpful, friendly and professional at all times. The facilities were clean and offering plenty of areas to choose from to unwind. Me and my Daughter had the most relaxing time together moving round the different jacuzzis and loungers. The spa is decorative to completely relax you as soon as you enter with its rain forest feel. The hotel room felt luxurious, clean and peaceful. Highly recommend Champneys Mere forest hotel to anyone who needs a pamper or complete relaxation. Did us the world of good. On leaving we walked around the beautiful lake. We will be coming back. Enjoy 😊

Not very well sign posted from the start ( parked the car no sign to say entrance as your around the back ) also inside the spa there no signs to say for example what sauna done what or mixed steam room this way nothing. The restaurant wasn’t sign posted we arrived and then was told there was another restaurant up the hallway. It’s a bit of figure it out yourself. Rooms was very basic considering this place is ment to be a luxury spa. Room was quite cold and there no heating or air con in rooms . But on the other hand it’s very chilled and relaxing. The staff at reception can’t remember the man’s name was so friendly and also the lady who served us our food . The food was 10/10 overall it’s worth the price we paid £250 for an over night stay dinner and breakfast and use of spa for 2 of us

I had a very unsatisfactory stay at this hotel and feel compelled to share my experience. The nightly rate is quite high, and to my surprise, they charge extra to use the spa facilities after 10 AM, which feels unreasonable. Additionally, check-in is late at 5 PM, making it challenging to make the most of your stay.

Breakfast was another letdown; while they provide fruit, if you're hoping for something warm, be prepared to pay extra for it. The overall atmosphere was further soured by the rude staff when I was not happy about paying extra for the spa.

To top it all off, the restaurant was disappointing as well, failing to meet even basic expectations. I would not recommend this hotel based on my experience.

I was worried after reading some of the recent reviews, but we had a great time and wish we had 2 nights there.

The setting is gorgeous on the lovely lake, loved the food at dinner, it was really tasty & healthy , we had a really spacious room.
The decor is old fashioned and the bathroom needs updating but most old English hotels are.

Breakfast was terrible & very slow but we enjoyed everything else.

The spa is lovely but was very busy until after 5. in the evening There was a brilliant pianist playing in the lounge area which was nice.

An absolute chambles for a well loved brand name!
Arrived at 10pm,the night receptionist was angry and did an awful check in, were told there is no room service or even a snack or a drink.
We were handed a paper to say that if we want to use the SPA next day we have to pay £70/person including lunch.
Room was OK can do with a proper clean.
Breakfast was limited in options.
Check out was a nightmare as there was a huge queue and we were waiting fir over 30min. We opted for the express check out at the end bit still had to queue to return the robes!

We booked this over night trip for our mini moon and told them well in advanced, when arriving to our room the beds were singles, this was quickly resolved, but found the bed very uncomfortable, no hot water in the shower, hydrotherapy pool cold and so was the sauna, we also booked ourselves a treatment but when waiting to go in we found it was double booked, they offered us complimentary lunch because of the mix up to find our names we're not actually down to eat, a lot of little issues that really didn't make us feel that relaxed

Super disappointing stay

Awful stay do not recommend at all. Visited this past weekend for my birthday, which we made a note of on the booking but was ignored. The rooms are tiny and very dated with a lot of things broken and not working properly like the shower and door locks. There is also no air con in the room so prepare to be boiling.
The location is lovely but the grounds are not well looked after at all. The front grass by the lake is so covered in duck poo you cannot walk without standing on it. The patio is grimey and in desperate need of a scrub and the furniture is broken. The service is absolutely horrendous. It took over 2 hours to serve us 3 courses for dinner, we had to keep begging to be served. Everything is supplemental on the menu and the choices are poor. I was served food and drink that I was allergic too twice despite telling them numerous times and being given an allergy report for our table. The breakfast options are incredibly poor and any hot food is of course, supplemental. The staff are beyond rude and really know how to make someone feel unwelcome.
In addition to all this, you cannot use the spa facilities before 5pm unless you pay £70 per person per day in addition to your £500 a night room charge. The outdoor pool has never been cleaned and you swim amongst dead bugs.
They closed the checkout desks during check out hours, likely so we have to go through express checkout and can’t give any feedback.
It was a super disappointing trip and ruined my birthday weekend.

We have had 3 previous trips to Champneys resorts and thought we understood the service offering. However we are unlikely to stay again. This is not a value for money experience. Aside from being able to walk around in a bathrobe there is nothing different here to a normal hotel with spa facilities. Our fault for not reading the confirmation email when booked but we assumed based on past experience that the use of the spa facilities came with the booking. They didn't. We had to pay an additional £70 each per day of our stay. For this one of the jacuzzi's did not have all the jets working, the large shared sauna was not hot enough, and a small shared sauna was closed. The small shared steam room was also not the best. The fitness classes also now charge a fee. The aqua fit class was disappointing. I find this pricing structure bizarre for this type of resort. In saying that the reception staff member who checked us in and out was wonderful - professional and accommodating. We didn't know until checkout that they resort had provided us a complimentary dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary which was a nice touch. Our New Zealand waiter also demonstrated a good understanding of customer service - some of the other serving staff could learn from him.

The whole place looked very tired and in need for refurbishment. Poor maintenance. Staff were very laps. It took us ages to check in. Room ok bathroom very dated. Facilities Spa Reception on ground floor 4 people was standing there talking I had to get there attention to get Spa Menu. They just said you need to go upstairs.

Outside pool slabs uneven. Pool dirty again very tatty.

We ordered food on the terrace. ordered at desk had to wait until he was finishing what he was doing. We ordered simple turkey sandwich and chicken wrap and two juices. Took our number and sat down at dirty table on terrace.

Eventually food come. Just one sandwich. he also delivered food to table next to us. He said nothing. Just brought our drinks and again said nothing. We mentioned we are still waiting for wrap. He said yes its coming. 20min later I went in to ask for my wrap, he was busy talking to colleague. He said again yes its coming. I sat down and further 15mins my wrap came. My partner had finished his. In evening booked set menu food was excellent. No fault and service was better but not what you would expect. after our meal we wanted to sit outside with a drink. We ordered drink at bar and girl said she would bring it to us. We sat and chatted. Again 20min we asked girl that passed us do you know where drinks are. She said oh yes one moment please. We sat for a further 10-15mins and decided not to bother.

Very dissappointed not Champneys we'd expected.

Great venue - operationally needs a little love

Unfortunately this trip left a fair bit to be desired. The most notable part was that I was leaving early the following morning and did make the staff aware of this at check-in (no breakfast needed etc) however when I went to leave there was no one trained to do check outs - so I was told I could leave and they would just charge my card for dinner etc (which I didn't get a phone call about or even an invoice sent).

The hotel is rated as a 4 star establishment, we had to queue for 20 minutes for both lunch and dinner. Paid an extra £55pp to have use of the facilities as you can only check in at 5pm. Took to the spa for a swim and relax, only to be disturbed by an aqua workout session in the main pool for an hour, with a very load instructor and very load music, hardly relaxing. Their Orangery close’s at 5pm so nowhere to go for pre or post dinner drinks. The building is very nice and the grounds are lovely. The reception staff are very good, however we did not stay overnight, left and went home ( 1 hour drive ), would not recommend. £200 for the room £110 to access the facilities, dinner £32pp plus supplement cost I.e. the steak was an extra £9.95, wine was £10.50 a glass 125ml… This is a place that I would avoid all together.

The property was clean, and the surrounding area very calm and peaceful (large grounds, lake). Nice staff, and the hotel and spa weren't overrun with people.
The one thing which could be improved is the length of access to the facilities: check in is at 5pm, which is already pretty late to check in, and checkout is at 10am. If you want to use the facilities otherside of these hours, you need to pay another £55. When you're paying £280 for 1 night for 1 room, it seems a bit out of order to not have a wider window to be able to use the facilities.

As you pull into the driveway up towards the spa/ hotel you are already feeling the stress fall away. It’s stunning! On arrival we were treated by a friendly receptionist who checked us in quickly . She booked us into breakfast and told us about the spa facilities
The room was clean but basic. We didn’t have a view which was disappointing, but the bed was super soft and I had the best night sleep.
The spa was clean and had all the facilities you’d expect. We used the outdoor jacuzzi which was lovely on a warm day. The hotel was not busy so we were able to get sun beds etc without any problem
We didn’t have dinner at the hotel , on walking past the restaurant seemed quiet and without atmosphere. There was no music anywhere. We fancied a hot drink and cake late afternoon but everything shut at 5 so not possible , so take snacks and drinks with you (although you could get alcohol from the restaurant)
Breakfast was ok, food as expected at a health spa nothing special , the waiting staff were having a really bad day , no tables were being cleared and food was running out faster than they could get it out . We didn’t bother trying to pay for anything extra as they just were too busy. You had to help yourself to hot drinks and make toast etc so not sure why they were so overrun, my only criticism of this beautiful spa. Overall a relaxing stay in beautiful surroundings

So this is a really nice spa! Probably one to take your partner to not really for business. The WiFi isn’t very good, check in and out takes forever and the staff are trying to upswell me a spa day and products. Great Staff just very tired and dated venue.

The place was just very tired looking and in need of a refurb, the bedroom and bathroom looked tired and 20 years out of date and likewise in the main lounge areas.

It didn’t help that both mornings by around 8.00AM on the Friday and 8.30AM on the Saturday there were workmen replacing woodwork around door frames either side of my room tapping and banging away which was a lovely way to be woken up in a place you come to for relaxation!
Also the one and only bar they had which was in their dining hall, it didn’t exactly feel like a Resturant, did not stock beer not bottled and not draft only wine it was just weird.

The one saving grace was that any of the staff serving in the “restaurant” were fantastic and very enthusiastic and went out of their way to try and compensate for the lack of beer which really was most appreciated.

Additionally the night Porter who managed to get me into my room after a very late arrival (1.30AM) did a fine job of a non standard check in.

Lots of restrictions in place due to COVID including limited time to stay at the hotel. Previously we could check in at 2pm but was turned away and told to return not before 5pm. The outdoor pool closes at 5.15pm so no chance to use it that evening. Indoor pool needs to be booked. Majority of the spa facilities (ice room, sauna and steam rooms) were not available and outdoor jacuzzi was out of use for most of the time that we were at the hotel. Some of the 'inclusive breakfast' items not available. Very poor and disappointing considering the stature and cost of the hotel.

The hotel grounds and outdoor furniture is covered in bird poo.
Food is terrible
Service is even worse.
No tables available for dinner, so you have to order room service at a charge.
No spa treatments available either as apparently you need to book these months ahead.
I would suggest bringing your own sunbed as like a beach holiday, towels are placed on them from the early hours and being able to find an available one is impossible.
Outdoor pool is dirty and needs a refurbish.
Indoor spa area is 90% out of service due to Covid. Broken jacuzzi.

I'd like to return on a spa break

What a beautiful place in a stunning location.

Unfortunately, due to it being a business trip, I didn't have much access to the amenities .... One day I had a swim, which was great.

One suggestion would be to have breakfast earlier of a weekday or at least offer a takeaway breakfast. When I asked at reception they didn't think this was an option. 0730 start is great if you're on a spa break but not so great if you need to leave to be at work for 0800!

The spa was very nice, but a bit busy. Our check in experience was the worst we have ever experienced at any hotel and we will not be returning based on this.

The hdro therapy pool is only available as treatment, sauna's were not hot enough and staff unhelpful. facilities are over sized under kept to good working order. Double be was 2 singles put together.

Overpriced Overcrowded Spa in a Beautiful Location

I stayed here to do a 4 day course (which was excellent). I also booked separately for the night before the course. On the first night I was up graded to a Luxury room due to a mix up and as the remaining 4 nights were also in a Luxury room I asked to stay in the room rather than move but was told someone else was staying in that room and that as they were separate bookings I had to checkout and check back in. As that wasn’t bad enough, the one treatment I was having had been organised for when I was attending the course (which they also organised). I pointed this out and was advised I needed to go to the treatment desk to sort it out. Why should I be the one to sort it out? It’s was their mistake! As if that wasn’t bad enough, my treatment was for booked for 55 minutes but lasted for 25 minutes and the rest of the time was for showering & dressing! Food is another issue. Breakfast Is a buffet of cereal, yogurt and fruit with the only free hot items porridge, hard boiled eggs & toast. Other hot items are available but incur a charge, which is shocking given that it costs in excess of £250 per night for B & B. It’s the same with dinner- many things are not covered & additional charges apply to certain meals, desserts & vegetables. The staff are helpful but there simply isn’t enough off them to service all the customers. Overcrowding, especially in the pool area & restaurant make this anything but a quiet retreat, which is a shame as it is in such a beautiful location.

Wonderful stay it was our 2nd time with my friend. Website not totally user friendly as wasn’t really sure of treatments and offers on.
The room was clean could of done with a mini fridge or an ice bucket as was charged for the usage!
I Tavel for a living as cabin crew so used to staying in nice hotels.
We will both be back c
