'Born from a shared dream, Sapientia Boutique Hotel is a passion project brought to life by two couples, each with diverse backgrounds in music, engineering, journalism, and education. They embarked on the challenge of restoring three interconnected, architecturally distinct buildings in the heart of Alta Coimbra, transforming them into a unique, personalized hotel experience.

There are several nice places on the property to relax, see the views, or have a bite to eat. It’s thoughtfully arranged. The breakfast buffet is excellent, with choices to address everyone’s wants. Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable.
Nearby is the botanical garden, a treat to wander through.

Beautiful boutique hotel with excellent service and a fantastic location—very close to everything. The only downside is that parking is limited. Also, be aware that the food at the hotel restaurant is extremely salty. However, that seems to be a common theme throughout Portugal, except in the Douro Valley region for some reason.

The location of the hotel is perfect. Right next to Biblioteca Joanina! Talk about a short walk to a national monument! Great restaurants are close by including the restaurant at the hotel. It was easy to walk the whole city and see and do everything we had on our list. The rooftop deck had amazing views too. The patio outside the restaurant was also very comfortable and inviting. They even have a pet turtle in a water feature in the patio area.

Our stay at this hotel was wonderful. Behind the simple walls you will find a beautiful and modern hotel. The included breakfast was great and the common areas were lovely. We stayed in a one bedroom apartment that was amazing. Margarida at the reception area was very helpful and provided us with tips and even helped us make dining reservations. She went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our stay. The location of this hotel was perfect to explore this magical city. It’s located right next to the university and a short walk to the city center, dining, and attractions. My husband and I wished we could have stayed at this hotel and in Coimbra longer. We highly recommend this hotel when visiting Coimbra.

The staff were great. They helped us find a parking spot, told us how to get around, mixed some great Negronis for our night cap, fabulous breakfast and an explained how to navigate out of this beautiful town. The room and bed made for a much needed rest on our road trip through Portugal.

Perfect hotel

Staff so friendly and welcoming. Clean rooms, beautiful design of bar/lobby/restaurant as well as rooms. Breakfast buffet had many choices and was delicious food. The hotel is located immediately below the historic university buildings. Our room had a spacious balcony on a quiet courtyard (autumn). The rooftop patio offers beautiful views of the city. Staff provided a free drink upon arrival, a free glass of wine at 6pm, and brought chocolate and a bedtime story to the room in the evening. This is our favorite hotel in Portugal, improved only if they would provide a kettle or coffeemaker in the room.

Very short 7 minute walk from the campus surprisingly easy after a long day going up hills.

Hotel staff was vey helpful. We wanted to put a load of laundry and found we could go out the back door down the staircase and be at a self service laundry in 3 minutes (it does require walking down and up hill). Altogether a great stay.

Directions on parking were not easy to follow but the instructions on the back of the parking permit were great (photo below). Staff were excellent, dinner was delicious and breakfast was very good. There was happy hour at six which was lovely. The only negative was that the drapes did not close properly and light came in making it too bright at night. We also could hear the people above very clearly!

Perfect if you are visiting the University

The staff are very kind and generous. Parking is very challenging on a narrow street with many hills. It is a simple walk to the famous library and university tourist areas. And the views are lovely. It is challenging to visit other parts of the city from this location. Breakfast was nice, dinner was delicious although the service was slow. There is limited storage for clothes either by hanging or drawers.

This location is convenient to visiting the University. It is however a long downhill walk with stairs and sloping streets to the main downtown area and other restaurants and obviously the same in reverse uphill to the hotel. If walking (if you’re in shape, it’s not that bad), do not fully trust Google Maps. The shortest route is the steepest with the most stairs.

The onsite restaurant is excellent for dinner and the breakfast buffet has a good selection and makings for snack sandwiches. Our room came with breakfast and a glass of wine at 18:00.

The hotel location, being further from downtown is quiet, except if the university students are having an event or out drinking, in which case, the rear units facing the road behind the hotel, get noisy at night.

The upper floor rear units have great views.

We had a fantastic stay in the Sapentia. We were there for a week and got to know the local area well and built a nice relationship with the staff too. The Hotel is situated in great spot, some of the rooms have great views towards the river. The only issue is parking. The location is on a tiny street adjacent to the University. If you can, don’t have a car. If you do, prepare to have to move to about a bit potentially. The hotel helped us a lot and we managed ok, the car remained, miraculously, unscathed even though it got backed into,(no visible damage, caught on the car camera). This is the only issue during an otherwise wonderful stay at the Hotel.

I would make a suggestion for the kitchen in having a cloth or sponge to be able to wash dirty plates etc., although any used glasses and other utensils were cleaned each day, we like to clean up after using crockery etc. Maybe some tissues in the bathroom for those sniffing days.

Unfortunately we’ve had a terrible experience with this hotel. The lack of understanding and communication is extremely disappointing. We were unfortunately in Portugal during the forest fires in September. On the day that we were travelling from Porto to Coimbra and planning on staying at Sapienta all highways were shut down. We were stopped by local authorities and turned around. We looked at every possible way to get there and asked police who advised it was impossible. I contacted the hotel to advise them and cancel explaining the situation and how it was impossible to make it there. The lady I spoke with advised that she would speak with management and would let me know. I had also advised them as soon as we found out to ensure that they had the opportunity to rebook the room. The following day we were advised that they would only offer us a credit for the one night stay good until September 2025. We feel this was an empty offer given they knew we are from Canada and would surely not travel back to Portugal for a one night stay. We attempted to resolve this with them through our Visa however we were advised by visa that the hotel had no intention in trying to resolve this other than their offer of the one night credit knowing it would not be used. I even tried to reason with them with a half refund of the $440 given the fact that this was out of control which they denied.
Keep in mind if booking this hotel that they are not reasonable should any issues arise.

Lovely use of beautiful huge rooms. The design kept the big pen feel of the old rooms by setting them up with a lift line gel. The bathroom/kitchen unit insert is brilliant, but really need some ventilation and better lighting.

The Sapientia staff was wonderful and made us feel so welcome. The hotel is perfectly located close to everything you would want to see. The garden and roof top are truly a beautiful place to relax after walking.

Nothing to complain about. Breakfast was great and location was even better. Parking can be tricky bc of how narrow the street it but other than that, very nice to have it included. The suite we stayed was amazing with views of the yard and rooftops. Spacious and modern but also well maintained with plenty of old time charm. I would definitely stay again.

Wonderful hotel in this very hilly town

The hotel was outstanding. The staff was so friendly and helpful. The rooms were great. They welcomed us with a glass of wine in the lovely patio area. The restaurant is small but really nice. Coimbra itself is extremely hilly, but the hotel is pretty convenient and not too steep a climb. Roads are very narrow if you're driving a car.
