Good news and bad news. Good news: We had a broken suitcase handle when we arrived. On mention to the concierge, the maintenance man arrived in 5 minutes with toolbox in hand and in another 5 minutes he had it fixed. Yay! Five stars to that guy!

Bad news: my wife and I had a couples massage and were charged double the price quoted to me. I felt ripped off. That marred a wonderful stay. So only four stars.

The room was clean. Nothing special, similar to what you find in an USA city hotel. The breakfast was extra special. If you can't find something to eat then you don't like breakfast. The hotel validated the parking ticket for the garage below the hotel. The parking garage included about a dozen spots to charge an EV.

We enjoyed our stay here. We stayed in a suite with the extra beds for our kids. It was clean and comfortable. The pool was great. 15 min walk to the old town of Coimbra was the only drawback. Also, limited food options at the property and immediate surroundings on a Sunday We would stay again though

Great place for a family visit or conference. My only complaint is thin walls, and much of the public, regardless of nationality, seems to have forgotten what it means to stay in a shared space while speaking in hushed tones. The people who work here are caring and kind, but hotel guests need some training.

This hotel is beautiful like the pictures, but the buffet is overpriced. My travel companions loved the themed buffet nights, but I ordered from the menu (which was limited). The AC would have to be reset by the front desk everytime we removed the key from the power slot and one night several rooms lost power for an unknown reason... so I woke up to no AC and I had to get dressed for my conference by cell phone flash light.... When I asked to speak with the manager, I was told that she was not there... no apology, explanation, or offer to make amends for the inconvenience! The room was ALWAY cleaned excellently! The AC was very cold and the remote only worked sometimes so I had to call the front desk often for them to fix it. But they did not alway answer the phone? I am not sure why, but I had a hard time reaching any services... room service, the spa, the front desk. No one consistently answered their extension. I stayed here with 14 students and 4 coworkers so we had like 10 rooms but we experienced similar issues. The spa was very reasonably priced. I recommend using the steam room, sauna, hot tub, and indoor pool... by 8p because they literally asked me to leave the pool at 8p (even though the front desk guy said that the pool closed at 9p). Different people give you different information. For example, the bartender told us that we had to leave the lobby tables because we had outside food. When I asked at the front desk, they said we could our food anywhere!

We were upgraded to a corner room with an oversized balcony looking out over the pool to the river. Spacious room, quiet, plenty of shelf and drawer space. The staff were amazing, Portuguese-friendly. Breakfast was very nice, with lots of hot and cold options including an omelet station. Location was very walkable to the Old Town, and also to the opposite side of the river and the Santa Clara monastery, plus walkways on both sides of the river.

Nice clean and well located hotel. The room was a bit outdated and the bed wasn’t the most comfortable but was perfectly fine for one night’s stay. While the mini bar was surprisingly included in my room rate, I was equally surprised to see that there were no amenities provided (body lotion, cotton balls etc). I didn’t try the breakfast.

Affordable 4 stars with Caveats

This was an affordable stay in Coimbra. Supposedly it's a 4 star hotel. However the in-room amenities/experience made it feel more like a 3 star. The room didn't have facial tissues and the toilet paper was rough. The bath was immaculately clean but the shower head leaked water all over the place. You can ask for a coffee maker to be brought to the room, but then it will cover the TV. All extra outlets were in a wall away from bed, so when the phone alarm rings in the morning you have to walk to turn it off, if you put your phone to charge at night as most people do. The hair dryer is the 1200watt attached to the wall without much cord that easily overheats. The room was very ample with plenty of storage and a great view, but the area around the hotel was not enticing for a stroll to the city which is just a 10min walk. The lobby and common areas are very nice. Breakfast was very good, and the staff was very attentive and helpful. Overall mixed feelings about the place. But for $165/night including taxes, breakfast and parking it's not a bad option.

The staff were friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed the outdoor pool and the bar area. The breakfast was really nice and they even offered a tray with gluten-free options to my partner with outstanding and tasty products.
However, it does not seem like anything else change since I was last there about 8 or 9 years ago. The rooms looked dated, the door didn't really offer soundproofing so you could hear everything in the hallway and other doors banging loudly, the bed was not comfortable whatsoever and the tables and chairs in the balcony were not clean (they had bird poop all over them). Moreover and even though we put the DnD sign at the door, the hotel staff entered the room without checking with us and while we were away: one to leave a plate with apples (not sure what that was about but ok), and another one to leave a slice of cake and wine, which I admit it was nice but I would rather have someone checking with me before walking into the room. Plus, because we were out the whole afternoon and evening for my birthday, that slice of cake must have been left out for so long it was pretty dry and sad.
You will need a cap to use the indoor pool, which they don't tell you about it until you reach the spa staff, who look to charge you 4€ for each cap, so we didn't use it.
I think this hotel is good enough to stay for a couple nights but not a whole week like we did. Will certainly look for other options around the area next time.

Too expensive for what it is (standard rooms)

BEWARE, the difference between rooms is huge. I booked a standard room with a \"city view\". It had no ceiling light in the bedroom area with only weak side lights. Since there are no additional sockets to plug your laptop or device you need to unplug one of the bedside tables, which means you are completely in the dark. There is no desk because the tiny desk (without chair) is where the TV stands. The room itself is small but the bathroom is very nice and large. I had no heating at night because all their air conditioning systems are blocked to a standard set up, but at night it can be chilly, while in the day it's hot. The bed linen was very good but the actual mattress is not so comfortable.
Portugal tends to use extremely hard old-fashioned mattresses, but if you are a foreigner, you may not find it comfortable. No memory foam mattress here.
Breakfast was good enough. I am vegan so my options were limited, but at least here they had baked beans and cucumbers with olive oil, and that's enough for me. Some other \"luxury\" Portuguese hotels have chia seeds and soy/coconut milk as healthier options but here they do not. The room was a corner one so it had a large balcony, which I liked, but no outside chair and no outside table. I was on the 3rd floor so I could see a bit of \"city\" but mainly you have a car park at the bottom and a new building in front. But, if you have a room on this side on the lower floors, you will have a horrible view.

The room was lovely and the breakfasts were absolute fantastic! We were able to walk along the water to downtown easily and I could run along the water into the park and all around Coimbra. The only hiccup we experienced was that they decided to clean both pools at the same time on Monday morning (when our daughter had been looking forward to finally spending the day at the pool, after our “boring” touring all weekend), but it looked like someone else got upset about that and alerted a manager, because the cleaning promptly stopped and the kids were able to play! (Which we appreciated very much!). Cleaning of the pool after hours sounds like a good idea to me, in general.

Deceiving as the hotel itself looks nice. The rooms are filthy. Smells of stale cigarette smoke and keep your shoes on as the carpet looks like it’s been trapping filth since the 70’s.
The shower doesn’t drain properly and splashes water all over the bathroom floor.
The beds are uncomfortable and worn.
Using the pool requires you to purchase a swimming cap and they’re still playing pandemic forcing you to book a 45min time slot.
I’d strongly advise against anyone booking here. Advertised as a 4 star, but more like a 2 star at best.

We started on the wrong foot with a front desk rep named Vanessa, a lot of attituded, really not friendly and left us with a bad taste afterwards.

Our room smelled like someone smoked in it, so we went back to the front desk and were lucky to find Sarah, who was a complete 180° from Vanessa. Amazing attention, friendliness and service.

Second room AC was not working really well, so back we went and waited until Sarah was available. She again was amazing, went with us to the room to check the AC to make sure it wasn't something simple. As it really was the unit, she went down to work her magic. She came back a few minutes later with another amazing staff, Leonor, who I later found out is the assistant manager. They showed us another room that was cooler and let us decide if we wanted to move rooms once again, we did.

That really showed us that we were cared for and we felt great. Leonor actually went the extra mile and sent us a surprise desert and wine to enjoy.

All this to show that problems can happen anywhere at anytime, but what really speaks volumes is the way they are dealt with. Congratulations Vila Gale for having people like Leonor and Sarah. We would definitely stay with you again!

We had a two night stay booked for this hotel.
While arriving late, the staff was very friendly upon greeting us. After dropping our luggage off we made our way down to the bar for a late night beverage and a quick bit. Unfortunately, the kitchen was closed and the staff were cleaning up but Michele made us a cocktail and off to the room we went. (Around midnight)
While getting ready for bed, i was reading a story out loud from the news. When all of a sudden we received a pounding noise from the room next door to quiet down. I was just READING out loud! Suffice it to say…the walls are very thin. Beds were ok. Breakfast adequate. Oh and you needed a reservation for the pool. We left a day early to make our way to Porto. Glad we did.

It's not the great hotel it used to be

Before Covid this used to be a great hotel with great customer service. Now it's very run down. For an exorbitant price I was given their worst room. They do not tell you that they have some dreadful rooms facing a concrete wall. They call it \"street view\". But it was not the street, nor the parking. It was some dreadful tiny back alley surrounded by concrete. I immediately requested a room change and I had to fight hard, to the point that I said I was going to refuse to check in and go somewhere else. So finally I was given a good room. However the rooms are all relatively run down, only the price has gone up. Even the breakfast buffet (or their lunch/dinner buffets), which used to be fabulous, now it's good but no longer fabulous.

Very limited breakfast options for non dairy family (vegan) family. The staff just kept asking us about gluten free food. I even asked in Portuguese. They clearly have no training in vegan food which for a 4 star hotel is very poor. We nipped over the road to a local shop picked up bread, butter, milk and made our own breakfast in front of them. You have to work very hard to add milk into bread, why on earth make it this hard is beyond me.

Maybe I'm spoiled, but I thought hotels cleaned the room when you stayed there. When I came back to my room on the second day...no one had been in the room at all. No cleaning. No bed made. No clean towels.

So I'm picky. I also expected things like a chair for the desk. Surprise.

Now, the bathroom window that wouldn't shut all the way, causing very loud wind noise to come in during the rainstorm... maybe that wasn't all me. Thank you, however, to the manager that brought up a roll of packing tape at 1pm to tape the window shut. No, really...

Awesome breakfast, however, and a nice little workout area.

Poor lighting and lacking effective temperature control, it was too cool and almost cold! The rooms were clean but plain, the bathroom shower was inconvenient. Above all, avoid the dining room! While the service was adequate, the food was wretched and had to be sent back because it was inedible, also poor quality and over priced. One got the impression they wanted to discourage use of dining facilities . . . and succeeded! Service at the cocktail lounge was missing entirely until one complained to the front desk. At best, mediocre and pricey.

Great place to unwind after traveling around Portugal. Love the pool, spa, and jacuzzi. Easy walk to old town, restaurants and the university. Very close to bus station too. We also had a wonderful buffet breakfast. The staff is very accommodating with great information, directions and even invited us to use the facilities for the rest of the day after checking out. Coimbra is a must see city in Portugal.

If You Liked the 1970s, You'll Like Vila Gale

The Vila Gale is a nice, but slightly dated hotel. Easy walking distance to some of Coimbra's best restaurants. A shout out to Nuno at the Front Desk who went the extra mile and saved my lunch as I went to the bus station as both the kitchen and bar failed to deliver it on time.

Our room was dated and the beds were not very comfortable. The staff was very nice and helpful.

The hotel was well located and in a quiet area. Our room had a good view of the river and it was nice to have a balcony. However we did not have any seating there. We did use the bedroom chairs. All staff were most pleasant and helpful.

Nice hotel overlooking the river. Pretty pool, great breakfast. Walking distance to the university and restaurants. (15 min) parking garage under hotel (charge)

HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Lovely hotel in very convenient walkable area of Coimbra. We had free breakfast buffet all 7 days and it was varied and excellent.

Good location. We had breakfast included and it was very good. Lots of choices. We also ate at the restaurant and the service and food were really good.
