Perfect location for tourist activities. All the staff we interacted with were friendly and very helpful. We appreciated their English language skills because our Portuguese is very limited. The hotel is of another era and transported us back in time with its old world charm, although maybe a little faded from its heyday. The many historic photos of the hotel and others in the same hotel group were fun to look at. The breakfast was VERY good with a wide selection of hot and cold options. The room included an entrance area separating the bathroom and bedroom, and were well appointed. We felt pampered. We also had a nice view of the downtown area and beyond from our room. We would definitely stay again on a return trip to Coimbra!

It’s an old time charm. Antique elevator, wooden panelled dining room, and antique furnitures. We wondered around and enjoyed the floor and old photos displayed. Reception and staff are kind and professional. Great breakfast, lush towels, hot and good flow of water. The location is great too. However, the hotel needs restoration: the carpet is really old and looks dirty, the pillows are not comfortable. But for our one night stay, we had a good rest.

This is a beautiful, old, century hotel with authentic charm.
The desk people (Sonia) were kind and helpful. Our room had a lovely view of the river.
We could walk everywhere and really enjoyed what the city has to offer. Good value for our money.

The room was clean but the wardrobe was run down. The carpets really need a change. There was a typical carpet smell in the hotel.
The bath tub was tiny and barely space to stand in it to shower.

Beautiful and elegant antique hotel. Everything they kept original. It is like you are walking on a 1930 movie. Very elegant and charming. The elevator is very unique and gives you the vintage feeling of the time. Although, I guess… even the carpet is original… this vintage hotel is so wonderful, but they do need new carpets asap (the old carpet gives the hotel a cheap, weird vibe). They need to figure out how to incorporate a new carpet with an antique style. Bedroom was ok beautiful decorated with vintage furniture, bed was very comfortable. They do not have a huge balcony, but quite nice to have the Mondego River view (keep in mind that the view in the pictures is better, in the real life view, the hotel has plenty of bus stops in front of it, and unfortunately they were having construction when we were there - noisy and dusty).
Breakfast was poor in quality and options; fruits were not cut; coffee was terrible, not a gluten free friendly place.
Hotel is very close to many coffee shops, bars, restaurants, and pharmacies.
Overall this is a nice vintage hotel budget friendly in a very central location for travelers who are visiting the city for a couple days.

If your looking for modern conveniences this is not the hotel for you, but if you want 1920s charm, this is 5*. No fridge, coffee, satellite TV, but great charm.and a pleasant breakfast. Very friendly staff, old carpets and I think it's great.

Stayed at 5 hotels during my trip in Portugal and this one is by far the worst hotel.

Pros:
- Nice receptionist that helped us refill our water in the middle of the night
- Cool elevator
- Free breakfast and was actually decent. Had drinks, eggs, and lots of protein choices

Cons:
- Very run down and old building/room
- Water pressure was super weak
- Horrible wifi connection
- Musty carpets

100+ year old hotel that they have tried to preserve close to it’s original character. Obviously it wont have modern features and that’s fine with me. I only gave this three stars not because of the age but because of the hardness of the bed and issues with the cooling/fan. Cooling issues were resolved quickly (thank you!). Bed hardness was not (until I could get back to my chiropractor). The breakfast was very nice (European), but it was the same every day. Some variety would be nice. Staff were mostly friendly and accommodating.

The building is 100 years old and a bit of a time capsule. The location is fantastic if you arrive by train at Coimbra-A as it's a 3 minute walk away. Lots of good restaurants in the street behind the hotel. The staff were super helpful with ideas and maps -- much better than the official tourism office staff!

First of all I knew from previous reviews the hotel was showing its age but my view was it had alot of charisma and charm. It also checked all the boxes for me on being convienently located, clean, quiet, and comfortable. Everything in my room functioned fine and my bed was comfortable. The breakfast provided was a wonderful way to start the day. I would not hesitate to stay again.

A grand old dame of a honey era, if those walls could talk. Must have been something in its time. If you are looking for all the things a modern hotel offers you might want to pass. We really enjoyed the historical features of this art deco property. The staff were simply amazing, so friendly and accommodating. We would stay there again.

I had read reviews that this hotel was tired, but it is really tired. Carpets in the bedroom could have been much cleaner. It has the bones to be a grand dam, but it just isn’t. Sad to say, I would not return . People are nice and I feel for them and their jobs, but the owners are not reinvesting.

The hotel needs serious updating, painting, carpet replacement. The furniture had seen better days.....
However, the charm was visible, the staff was excellent, and very helpful, and the room was very clean. Beds were comfortable and the linens were nice.
The hotel is in an excellent location, and we had a view of the river from our room.
The breakfast was nice, with eggs, meats, fruit, yogurt, pastries, and coffee and juices.
No wifi in the rooms, only in the lobby.

I'm sure this hotel was very nice back in the day but it past it's prime. This hotel needs a lot of work to bring it back to a passable standard. The staff were nice and the breakfast was good. The location was wonderful.
The room was very dated from the actual key to open the door to the worn out carpeting. The bed was not comfortable and there were only 2 pillows.
Would not recommend.

We cannot recommend Hotel Astoria, due to the front desk staff and management. We arrived at around 2:00 on a very hot afternoon. The only thing cool in the lobby was the attitude of the desk clerk, who without friendliness denied us an option of early check-in (which was at 3:00 - other hotels have allowed it). We went back into the heat and returned at 3:00. The same clerk gave us our key without welcome. The room was hot, and the air conditioning didn't work. When we spoke with the desk clerk, she without apology or concern told us the a/c had broken the day before, and wouldn't be fixed until at least the following day. In other words, she knew when sending us to our room that it had no a/c, but hadn't bothered to tell us. We requested another room, and she told us with indifference that there were no other rooms. We asked to speak to the manager, who was as uncaring and unhelpful as the clerk, repeating more than once without apology that the hotel was fully booked. When I kept insisting that hotels almost always have something in reserve, she finally grudgingly admitted that they did have one single room available with working a/c. Indeed they did, and we took it.
The staff's utter lack of kindness, helpfulness, and concern was the worst we've experienced in decades of travel. All our other Portugal lodgings had lovely staff whose kindness and help enriched our stays. The Astoria, a sweet, shabby old beauty of a hotel, deserves better staff and so do her customers.

No internet service even in the lobby.
There’s a sealed door next to my bed, on the other side is the bathroom of the room next door; one hears all businesses that go on in there.
Breakfast was poor; ham tasted rancid; fruits on display all rotted; no electric kettle in the room, nor are they available in the lobby; shampoos and shower gel came in small plastic bags that need scissors or teeth to rip open; lift was not working the two days we were there; the front desk does not command good enough English.

Very old, shabby chic hotel. Great breakfast. Eggs cold even at 7:30 opening. Elevator slow, but old timey with a bench!! Our 2nd floor room required 6 stairs, which we both fell with my suitcase. I still have a bruise on my foot and hubby ripped off a nail. A/C and shower fine. Cute sitting room with river view. They could move armoire into bedroom and put a small sofa and table in that area.

The best way to describe this hotel is funky. It is a stately old building and is a throw back to the 1950's. The elevator is all wood inside with a leather bench to sit on. The rooms are large and have modern amenities while keeping the a 50's look. You get a Juliet balcony with a great view, off an adjoining sitting room. you can put you feet up in the huge lounge of the lobby and the breakfast room is a must see.
Great staff and extremely helpful.
The location is 3 mins from the Train Station and right off the main square so you can taking in the sights and the dinning easily.

The hotel is charming, as you can read in all reviews. I appreciated the age and history (including the amazing elevator), until we arrived on our floor. Carpets were old, floors uneven and the room… well, I did not expect to be sleeping on a mattress that was as old as the hotel. No joke. Sitting down on it, it squeaked, sleeping on it was almost impossible. And if you are a tall person ( 5’10” tall), you cannot sleep on your back because you won’t fit in the bed. So that was very unfortunate. The staff was nice and the breakfast buffet was acceptable. I would definitely visit but never stay there again. At least until they upgrade their beds.
