Great location, free parking and easy walk up to the small town centre and surrounding countryside. Staff were very helpful. Nice old property but a little dull sometimes and lacked character. Clean though. There were issues with water pressure, effecting showers etc. this was explained on arrival, so was not a surprise. Breakfast was unexciting and just ‘okay’ with overcooked scrambled eggs, dry bacon and a pot of beans that was more juice than beans. A comfortable stay despite the quibbles.

A short overnight stay at great value. The rooms are spacious and the beds comfortable. It's not a four star hotel so don't expect toiletries and hair dryer, but a warm welcome, comfortable bar area and good parking for free.

Staff were very good but housekeeping leaves something to be desired, our room (27) had issues throughout the room, drawers had hair, dust chocolate wrappers in them, under the furniture and on the oak beams were thick with dust and debris, bathroom wasn't much better, shower was dirty, taps, shower had not been cleaned and polished, the ou outside of the rooms had lots of cigarette ends outside the door and the carpark would benefit from a sweep up

Loved this place, great character & the staff was really welcoming & friendly. The bedroom was large and the bed comfortable. The bathroom could have been cleaner though, felt like they rushed through this one. The food in the pub was good and the breakfast was wonderful with a great selection and a nice cooked plate, everything felt fresh.

Unfortunately the heating wasn't working in our room and ended up with a temporary fan heater, that was the noisiest ever!

The first room we were offer smelt damp and no hot water.
Raised these concerns and was offered a much enter room.
The staff were polite and Louise was a pure delight accommodating all enquirers with a smile and cheerful disposition.

Looking around the place I can see it is need of some investment, a lick of paint, minor repairs and maybe some safety mirrors so that staff don’t have to shout “Corner” when approaching a blind spot on a corner whilst carrying hot food around.

Meal was good value and the breakfast ample.

We enjoyed our first stay n Hungerford and The Bear Hotel helped make this a memorable visit.

The car park was ok and is free. Check in was ok.Made coffee, kettle leaked everywhere.ended up standing it on hand towel to boil. Went to the bar, a green king pub that doesnt have any green king ales unless purchased in a bottle? We didn't eat in the pub as felt it wasn't up to standard.The shower whilst very hot leaked everywhere over the bathroom floor. Had to use our towels to mop it up.
Went out for the day, returning early evening. No one had been in our room no clean towels, bins not emptied had even run out of loo paper! My partner went in search of a member of staff. Had a number at reception to call.a chap arrived with towels and apologised, said he would raise with management. Awful loud live music - Vera Lynn style on the Saturday night.

Windows of the bedroom are only single glazed so there is a bit of road noise. Bed was comfortable and the bathroom adequate. Staff friendly and welcoming, breakfast very good and evening meals are typical pub grub at pub grub prices. Good size car park.

The staff were all lovely, couldn't offer enough help. The restaurant food in the evening had good choice and what we had was good quality, we enjoyed this, we also ate out in the evening where there was a good choice of different restaurants to choose from.
I am not one to complain but our stay was for 4 nights of which our room was only serviced once, we had to use towels provided for all of our stay. Housekeeping needs to be managed as the carpets by the skirting boards were full of dirt, you could see this standing up. Room has net curtains which required washing. I am not picking at this with a microscope, it was obvious.
Linen for beds and towels were spotless and looked new. I just think it is attention to the smaller details that need picking up.
This hotel is friendly, attractive and comfortable, I would recommend it to my friends and family these smaller issues would not put me off.

I chose this hotel because I was on a business trip in Newbury and closer hotels were over my budget. I didn't need frills, just a place to lay my head for the night as i knew i would be arriving late night. As such, I was not expecting much in terms of facilities as it's a budget hotel. What i wasn't expecting was the room to be dirty. The carpet was full of dust bunnies. I don't even know how that happens, it looked like a weeks worth of rolled up dust or the hoover bag burst, it was all over the room. Because I checked in late reception was closed so I couldn't even change rooms.The smell from the drains was awful and I had to spray my pillow with perfume to try and cover the smell but it didn't work. I couldn't even watch tv because the light attracted these tiny gnats. The bedding did not smell fresh. I had bought my own towel and ended up using it as a bed sheet as I couldn't bear the thought of lying down in someone's bed sweat. Yuck! It was a miserable nights sleep. I seriously contemplated sleeping in my car. I wish I had read the reviews a little more carefully as I have since seen others complain of exactly the same things. What a shame this could really be a nice place if they sort the smell and cleanliness

The staff are very helpful and pleasant, due to the cooler weather could have done with some heat in the rooms. Unfortunately our towel rail didn’t work which meant replacing the towels because no way to get them dry. The extractor fan didn’t work either both reported to staff, One other little niggle there are signs to hang on the doors on whether you want your room tidied up but nowhere on the outside of the door too hang them. If there was it might save chambermaids going into each room when it wasn’t really required.

Nice building , staff pleasant and helpful , food general pub food , breakfast very good . My only real issue was the cleanliness , there were dead flies in all the windowsills , the shower heads were full of limescale and looked grim , shower surround had previous guests hair on it , chipped cups for coffee in the bedrooms and wine glasses in the bar cloudy and looked unclean , sink in bathroom had a build up of limescale , the paintwork on walls and doors all need redoing looked tatty , i am not high maintenance , and have stayed in many Greene Kings , this sadly was not upto the standard of the others we have stayed in .

A real hidden gem!

This is one of the nicest hotels I've stayed at, and I've stayed at a lot of hotels! We had such a lovely room that had the stream running past the window. The beds were super comfy and the room had lots of plug sockets which seems rare in hotels!
It was a Greene King but the food was better than any I've been too and reasonably priced. Service was quite slow considering how quiet it was but the staff were very friendly. The pictures online don't do this place justice, a real hidden gem!

My room was adequate and the fried breakfast was good. Service at breakfast was ok, but as there was only one person covering breakfast, there was no greeting and I was very much left to sort myself out.

One small recommendation for improvement; if a curtain could be placed over the entrance to the room, to block out the electric light from the courtyard at night.

A night by the river.

We had a pleasant stay at the hotel including attending a lovely wedding reception.
Our bedroom and bathroom were clean and tidy. My only criticism would be that the pillows on the bed were too hard - one was not high enough, but two were too high.
We had an issue with our car and therefore couldn't stay both the nights we had booked but the hotel staff were very efficient and were able to refund us the second night.

Bed comfy but no sleep, old noisy building/floor

Noisy, no rested stay. Floor above room in coach house needs sorting! Customer staying above floor creaked every time they moved, were up and down all night and I woke with every movement from them or bed movement. This was not mild it was very loud. Front door needs some seals or perhaps a curtain as this lets in all noise, as does the windows. I appreciate an older building but i must of only slept about 3hrs if that with the combined issues. Shower is not fit for purpose, very hot water, no pressure and yet no general indication of where the temp levels might be on the taps so if you turn it on and its very hot you cant get to the taps to turn it off without burning yourself. Shower curtain is installed in the worst postion, you cant take a shower for it literally being on you or in your face. Kept sticking to me while showering, had no choice but to open it while showering, filling floor with water. Shower was clean but was a little black mould and cealing had water damage, no extractor fan so not surprising. Although they advised when I arrived the kitchen was closed, if I had not seen on facebook that their kitchen was closed prior to booking I would not of been aware at all, as no information on any website via hotel. com or hotels own, nor had any email etc advising me of it either, so would of arrived gone 7pm after 2.5hrs travel to no food and having to figure out somewhere to go.

Arrived late and dropped luggage in room then left for a function
On returning we found when we ran the tap in the bathroom the sink was blocked
Could not turn off the bathroom radiator which was extremely hot and made the bathroom feel like a sauna and there was no shower gel available
There was dust on the bathroom floor and in the bed area and a lump of dust on the bed
Certainly NOT worth £81 per night breakfast NOT included in this price

This property is historic and unique, and it is a privilege to be able to stay there. The staff were very helpful. The building is typical of an ancient inn and may not be to everyone's taste, but I loved it. I did not try the food, but the wine selection and the coffee were excellent

A bit disappointed..

The bed is comfortable, the room is warm. However bathroom cleaning is not great; we never got any spare toilet tissue after it ran out on day 3 (we stayed for 7 nights) and the toilet wasn't cleaned properly. The shower also needs the grouting replaced, and the bathroom door wouldn't close. There was rarely anyone at reception - only once in the whole week. The breakfast staff still need training - offering and topping up tea & coffee, clearing tables (never leave the room empty handed), spoons in the cereals, milk & juice topped up, appropriately dressed (no long sleeves dipping into food), hair tied back - not pleasant to have a long hair decorating the food! And on one occasion we were told to sit at a table that hadn't been cleaned so we had to wipe it ourselves! Ashtrays on the tables outside the bar area were full of cigarette ends floating in rainwater - really disgusting to walk past every morning. Beer cans, rubbish, dropped cloths/sponges were all observed during the week. A manager should be walking around, checking these things throughout the day. It just needs someone to actually care about the place - The Bear's reputation is not good amongst the locals and you are losing business. All of the above we reported over a year ago when we stayed. It's nearly all the same restaurant staff and they are still poorly trained, so not sure if there's really any point in leaving a review as it's obvious no-one pays any attention...

I didn't stay at the hotel as although I left a number of messages on the hotel ansaphone querying whether the room I had ordered online was suitable for my 98 year old Mum they couldn't be bothered to call me back.
In the end I couldn't take the risk that the room might involve a climb up lots of stairs or only have a bath so I cancelled the booking losing my money.
Very unsatisfactory. The hotel behaved in a very arrogant manner and they need to get a decent switchboard.

Fantastic staff let down by dilapidated buildings.

The staff were workingtheir socks off and really trying to serve customers well. However they were handicapped by the dilapidated state of the building.

Checkin was very quick and friendly, and staff quickly arranged extra bedding for a blow-up mattress for a child. However the state of the rooms left a lot to be desired. One room had an aweful smell, which we were told had been reported by a previous guest that week. We were given an odour remover spray which was effective.

There was a thick layer of dust on the bedhead, cobwebs on the lights, and coffee granules on the desk. Cleaning rooms had not been a priority for the overworked staff.

The wooden window frames were actually rotting in places and it seemed as if the windows might fall out if touched. The toilet seat was also not firmly attached and was another accident waiting to happen.

Our room and the one next to it were accessed by a shared lobby where just standing on the floorboards to put a key in the door made a sound like someone knocking. I lost count of the number of times we went to answer the door only to discover our neighbours going in or out.

In the restaurant the main meal arrived before we received our starter. We were compensated for the mistake. The food, when it arraived, was good value. The presence of a lot of local people attested to the quality & price of the food & drink.

The bed was comfortable, if a little hard. We had two good nights' sleep.
