Marlborough is a gorgeous, well located town.
We chose this location for its proximity to a special weekend event (The RIAT 2025) Hence we made our booking 9 months in advance and there was little accommodation to choose from in the area.
The Green dragon is clearly first and foremost a pub and you just wait as long as it takes, at the bar to check in.
We got given a large front room, right above the bar and overlooking the high street. After ascending a narrow lumpy stairway to the room and then another to discover a bathroom, we were immediately disappointed to find there was no shower. We could just about manage awkwardly, with the hand hose, in a high sided bath, positioned under a low ceiling.
An alternative room wasn’t an available,Though looking around Im not sure there would have been any better options.
There is no breakfast served with or without booking and they did not serve evening meals.
If you want a vibrant and lively bar? then this is the place for you. The entertainment/Juke box doesn’t go off till 12am and then the noise continues to spill out in to the street till the early hours of the morning. This is without a doubt, that kind of pub that is a great hang out for locals with a causal feel. It has a scruffy outside space to enjoy a lively summers night vibe. This is for the night owls out there, that don’t need to sleep or have a bedroom window open.

There is parking behind the waitrose and staff walked us there after their shift had ended to ensure we understood the parking App since tomorrow is the Farmers Market on High Street and we would have to move the vehicle early. Now it’s all sorted and paid in advance. Of course it’s an older hotel and everything is crooked and settled, but you should come here for that eclectic experience, as we did. I just miss the old mural that was painted in the pub before, replaced by a more modern map.

Very old noisy building

Old hotel with an in nerving slope in the room. Ok - so the building is hundreds of years old so it’s maybe to be expected
Very noisy - again age of building suggests you can’t fit double glazing
Can easily hear the bar ( and music ) downstairs
Large eating areas downstairs- surprisingly no breakfast though. I’ve seen this in other Wadsworth pubs.

Fine for Bed only - no parking either

Greeted by the barman who was obviously busy serving behind the bar so our check-in wasn't perfect, however we'd traveled a long way and were looking dinner in. No such luck - food stops and 4pm. No breakfast offered either which actually was ok because we had a lovely breakfast nearby at Coffi Lab.

The room in the pub was clean. The pub itself was tired and the garden area was overgrown and messy. The building had scaffholding and the men appeared right outside the window one morning without warning. Late night noise from pub goers caused disturbance one evening and the people setting up the market early hours 4am on Saturday morning made for very disturbed sleep. The pub is in a good location for all amenites in the town. Staff didnt warn us about the men arriving on the scaffholding.

Nice overnight stay.

An old building with wonky flooring and lovely beams. Our room was up two flights of a spiral staircase, the room was clean, spacious, the bed comfy and the room comes with all the usually items you'd expect.

The pub itself had a good selection of drinks and a good selection of food items - which are reasonably priced.

The service is polite and friendly

Lovely spot for post flight re-orientation to UK

Lovely Old World pub, beamed ceilings and ozing history, a reorientation spot after our red-eye from the west coast. Busy friendly pub leading to quiet guest area above and nicely appointed room upstairs. We loved the shady beer garden well away from traffic etc. No hotel parking had to use pay spots out front on High Street in 2 hr chunks and spots hard to find -recommend using the off-site lots out back.

Staff very friendly and helpful, despite me arriving on a busy Friday evening near Christmas.
Well presented twin room - lovely decor. Lots of storage and power points. Good size TV. Clean modern bathroom with quality towels and toiletries.
14th century building so floors are a little uneven (to be expected). Room key fairly tricky - takes several attempts to open (may be a knack to it that I didn’t master). Couldn’t access hotel WiFi, although apparently no password required.
Disappointingly breakfast no longer provided, although was advised ‘free cooked breakfast’ at booking. Plenty of good cafés nearby though.
Central high street location - although street parking is available I parked behind the hotel in one of the nearby public carparks.

Wonderful hotel and location.

The hotel was amazing! Very quirky and old, our room was at the top of the hotel and had wonky floors and ceiling, so cool. The room itself was clean, super comfy and even tho it looked out over the highstreet, it wasn’t noisy to sleep. The breakfast was simply amazing, soooo good. Had an amazing time and would recommend this hotel for sure. Only downside is you have to park a little walk away but it wasn’t expensive.

Stayed for 2 night's, in room 1. We liked the room with the bathroom up a few stairs. The room was quite large. This would not suit anyone who had problems with stairs as they are narrow. We enjoyed our stay and would stay here again.

The room was excellent and in a good location. Beautifully decorated, clean and comfortable with a beautiful view. Small problem was that when I returned in the evening, the downstairs pub was closed. I panicked as no one told me how to get in after is closed and I didn't realise it closed so early. I did have a punch of keys, but not sure as which doors to try them on. However someone came to clean the bar and I manage to get in. It was so lovely, I wish I could have stayed longer,

Everything was lovely, but the stairs to the upper bedrooms are narrow, steep and winding. This makes them difficult for the elderly or those with large cases, but bear in mind that they are part of the character of a wonderful old building that is part of the history of this town. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The top room (with sloping floor - again, character!) had everything we needed and was very comfortable. Breakfast was cereal, juice, toast and optional full English - not the varied banquet of modern hotels, but this is a traditional British inn with rooms, not part of a modern fleet. Recommended for those who love traditional towns, architecture and service.

From the moment we entered The Green Dragon we knew we had chosen correctly. Greeted by the hosts with a smile and shown to our room, we were over-the-moon to be staying the night here. Gorgeous room (No.1) decorated to a very high standard, clean, comfortable and value for money ~ superb bathroom facilities and one of the best nights sleep … EVER!
Excellent well kept beer in the bar with superb food to boot. The breakfast was delicious and plentiful...just plain yummy :-)
We would highly recommend The Green Dragon and we will return.

We had a lovely 1 night stay at this b and b! If we were not hiking along the Ridgeway the next day we would have definitely stayed another night! The rooms were comfy and clean with a great hot drink assortment and bottles water. The breakfast was very nice and we also had an evening meal in the pub which was great, and a good atmosphere! Quirky place that is a little tired on the way up to the rooms but once past that, the rooms are very comfortable (I've stayed here a couple of times) although probably not suitable for those with restricted mobility. Staff are very friendly and breakfast was ok too. Will stay again.

This is really a pub with 4/5 ensuite bedrooms. It’s a very old building and charming. I would stay there again but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. The stairs are narrow and steep, no lift. The stair carpet was dirty and the stairway needs redecorating. The room itself was fine once you get used to a sloping floor. Bathroom was fine with bath and a good shower. Very friendly staff but only seem to be around when the bar is open. I left at 7am and had to phone back later to pay the bill!

Dirty, timber bedhead full of dust. Move the pillows and it's the first thing you see. Layers of dust, why the cleaner ignores it, I do not know. The whole place needs a deep clean. UK! Also layers of dust hanging from around spot light in bathroom. Couldn't eat breakfast. Horrible.

One night stay for a business trip to Marlborough. Arrived early evening, didn't eat or drink in the pub and left very early next morning. Room was on the top floor (3rd) and would not be accessible to anyone with restricted mobility as it is up a steep and narrow staircase. Hallway and stairs up to room in need of renovation/smartening up but my room was very good. Lots of space very old period open fire, large comfortable bed and modern bathroom with good toiletries. The room was also spotlessly clean. Good value for a one night stay.

On a slope

The staff were welcoming, although I was not expected and they had to move a member of staff from a room for me. The room was very clean with all the facilities I wanted. However it was on the third floor, with opportunites to hit my head on low beams.
My big issue was that the floor sloped 10 inches (250mm) and that was very un balancing when getting out of bed.
I had a full breakfast which was prompt and filling, although the sausage was inedible.
Car parking was on the street overnight, OK, but at 8am I had to go out and pay for a parking ticket.

We had a lovely character room on the first floor, facing the town. Lots of space for a family of four - one double and two singles. Everything worked - apart from the bathroom door handle; which didn't want to move!
Staff extremely helpful, breakfast was fantastic quality.

A shame that this tied house has been neglected by the brewery (Wadworths). Dripping tap, needed decorating, broken wiring trunking. The staff were excellent, especially Steph, the two chefs and the cleaning lady. They bent over backwards to make our stay comfortable. Marlborough has parking difficulties but they are not insurmountable, and there are plenty of things to do/visit in Wiltshire. Really though, Wadworths need to get movingt and do some maintenance on this fine old pub or they could lose custom.

Nice quirky rooms but overlooked main street and very noisy traffic, pretty much all night (it was hot & so the window was open). A pity there was no hotel car park as it meant getting up a little before 8am to buy a parking ticket to tide us over while we had breakfast & got ready for the day. If you want to stay in a typical English place, this is it. It is above a pub, but one of the coolest place ever! The people in the pub were the friendliest ever, and the owner was so helpful. I would love to go back and spend more time there. This was a wonderful experience staying there.

The Green Dragon is really a pub which offers accommodation, not a 'hotel' as such. If you like 'olde worlde' accommodation then the Green Dragon is probably for you, if you prefer a modern 'chain' hotel then it's not.

Steep stairs, no lift, so not for the disabled or anyone who has walking difficulties.

No dedicated parking, so park in a big car park behind Waitrose, just make sure you buy a ticket to take you past 08:00 next morning, otherwise you could get a fine. Wi-Fi a bit hit and miss. In my room, a radiator was full on all the time, the valve control had no effect. (Turn the valve on the other side of the radiator to shut of the flow completely.)

Very quiet at night, so you should sleep well. Old fashioned springy mattresses though, not modern 'body forming foam'. Could have done with a couple more electrical sockets.

A traditional inn with lots of character.

We stoped for one night while visiting the area. The Green Dragon was the right option. A very hospitable staff in a very traditional inn. The evening was relaxing with good beers in a warm lobby. The room was very comfortable despite the age of the building. The bathroom has been renovated and was very comfortable. The tradtional English breakfast and the other options of meals were delicious. If you are ok staying in an old traditional inn, with leaning floors and lots of character, this is a perfect place. We loved it!

Only downside was parking - none at hotel and the all day stay had to be renewed at 8am - which was impossible to do by phone. If we had more time we would have made complaint to the local tourist info office as they really should get this together if they want people to visit Marlborough

Clean and comfy

Great staff, nice breakfast and great bed and shower. Bit cold room but quickly gave heater to warm it up. Noisy but not surprising as a pub on a Friday night! Good central option for Marlborough

The staff are very friendly we enjoyed the food and it was very reasonably priced. The rooms are a little jaded but are value for money being in the middle of the high street.

An Enjoyable Stay

We enjoyed our night at The Green Dragon, located right in the middle of Marlborough town centre. The staff were very welcoming, and check in efficient. It is a very old property and the mix of stairs, beams and sloping floors added to our experience, although they may not be to all tastes. Our breakfast was one of the best we have had 'on the road'.

Great friendly unique pub

Lovely pub, breakfast was great along with friendly staff, only stayed one night but definatly come and stay longer next year , we were playing in a band at a pub near by and we were kindly given keys to get inside in the early hours , great room as well full of character , loved it

Ambaince in an old English village.

Nice old 16th century building on the main street in Marlborough, centrally located to everything in the region. Beautiful old town. Great pub and brekkie, with lots of ambiance. As is common with centuries old buildings, the floors are not exactly level, which makes for an interesting experience whether you've had a pint or not. Nice service, clean rooms, and centrally located. Free parking on the street after 630p. We arrived VERY late, and the manager waited up for us. I would stay there again!

good overnight stay

stayed overnight on a drive through to south coast, broke the journey up nicely . lots of character, room spacious but cosy. excellent breakfast. nice relaxed feel about the place - easy like Sunday morning. surprisingly quiet at night. right in the main high street so close to all shops and restaurants.
