The Donnington Grove Estate is set in a delightful and secluded position on the outskirts of Newbury and is overlooked by the historic Donnington Castle. The present house, where the hotel is located, was built by James Pettit Andrews between 1763 and 1772 to designs by John Chute.
This style is now known as Strawberry Hill Gothic, after the house created for Horace Walpole in Twickenham. The land purchased by Andrews at the time was not extensive and during his ownership, Donnington Grove could more properly be described as a house with grounds rather than a country estate.
The estate, which comprises of 550 acres, was a mixture of parkland, farmland and woodland, with the River Lambourn running through it. These variations in the landscape provided an ideal setting for a championship golf course.
Dave Thomas, one of Britain’s foremost golf architects was assigned the task of creating a golf course that was in keeping with the listed landscape gardens and lake to the south of the house. The construction of the course started in November 1991 and on the 12 June 1993 the Donnington Grove Country Club opened.
If golf does not suit everyone there are also beautiful walks, fishing and gardens to enjoy.
When you stay at Donnington Grove Country Club in Newbury, you'll be on a river, within a 5-minute drive of Donnington Castle and Shaw House. This golf country house is 8.5 mi (13.7 km) from Highclere Castle and 17.2 mi (27.6 km) from Thames River.

The rooms certainly need an upgrade, and perhaps facilities for a late night drink and something to eat. But the grounds are lovely and it’s walkable from most big tourist areas.

The room was very run down with a threadbare carpet and no bulb in one of the bedside lamps. The room was at the top of the building and no help was offered with carrying my luggage up the stairs.
The bathroom was antiquated and the dodgy plumbing kept me awake as it made a tremendous noise every hour or so.

When my taxi pulled up to Donnington Grove, I was instantly impressed with this gem out in the country. I had a beautiful room on the top floor, enjoyed the cool evening air coming through the windows, and sitting in the late afternoon watching the geese bathe and play. It was a truly relaxing part of my England vacation!

Stayed here for 1 night for work. Long drive up to property through golf course. Okay greeting from person on reception. I was in room 304 which was up a lot of stairs (at least 3 flights) and there was no lift (which was okay for me). Room was huge as was the ensuite, but all very tired decor and needed redecorating. Bed was comfortable, WiFi was okay, TV was old and control was not great. Tea and coffee making facilities were in a draw and had to unplug another device to plug in the kettle. Lots of Canadian Geese in the grounds which did make an amount of noise both at night and in the morning.

We were in the summer houses which were very spacious, clean and comfortable. The showers were the best ever.
My husband did his morning walk up to the Castle and really enjoyed it.
The full English breakfast was superb with delicious sausages and that set us up for the day. Overall a wonderful stay and we are sure to return. Highly recommend

The room we were in could do with a decorate, or at least a decent clean. There were cobwebs covering the ceiling in the bathroom and around the lights in the bedroom.

There were several guests who had room changed, we ended up in the room with doggy shower after someone else vacated it - it was better than the room with the bees nest. Staff were brilliant and coped with the various issues well despite being stretched.

Comfortable stay is a period property in beautiful grounds. Only 2 downsides to spoil the perfection - fire alarm fault at 2300 on 1st night and a tiny kipper fillet at breakfast in the morning otherwise faultless.

Great location for local sites and Newbury races, plenty of parking. Lovery grounds to walk in, a Golf driving range on site, as well as a Golf course. within the grounds. We would come again, possibly with friends to play Golf in the Morning and go to the Races in the afternoon. We didn't have food at the property so cant comment. Good restaurants nearby and a nice theatre nearby. You could have a great weekend here if you plan it right.

We choose one of the lodges in the walled garden due to it having a kitchen and private outside area to sit. Very roomy and bed excellent. Would have preferred to have a shower not a shower over the bath but to be honest we knew that as we booked. Overal the lodge eas clean, spotless bedding and towels. However the plates and utlery had not been washed properly so i washed those. The oven ould also do with a clean. The gardens were lovely and it was very convenient for highclere castle and newbury town centre. Dont bother with the restaurant its overpriced and not the best menu or great food

We were there overnight for 1 night and had been at th theatre so unfortunately didn't get to experience any of the other hotel features as we had to leave relatively early the next morning

A return visit but a room booked in the main house. The room was large with an outstanding view but was tired, with outdated decor. However both nights we cld not sleep due to the noise in the lobby that travels upstairs via the open atrium. A party event was on, on the second night -which carried on until after 12pm and prevented any sleep. The hotel needs to: provide soft door closures as the toliet door kept banging sending vibrations up thru. Door seals on room doors- ours didn't have a seal and wld only close when locked leaving a gap around. Some sound proofing within the atruim itself and finally inform customers at time of booking an event is on allowing a decision as to whether you wish to stay or not. Unfortunately we were informed that we couldn't change room due to being fully booked and on speaking with reception in the am , informed that young people like to party and have no consideration- not true and it is the hotels responsibility to ensure all guests have a pleasant stay.

The room was good bit of a treck for breakfast in the morning. I had some really bad neighbours noisy at night and in the morning 6am. This was reported so hopefully they where sorted out.

Just stunning and beautiful in terms of its setting, large country park and golf, you go over the river on a bridge to the first view of a Gothic (Strawberry Hill) Mansion.
The Parking arrangements were a bit ad hoc outside the hotel with the odd person pulling up and getting golf clubs out (for the nearby driving range) As a Blue Badge holder I was surprised that there was no disabled parking spaces at all, I had to park some way down the drive which was not ideal.
Reception was friendly and staff showed us down to our room which overlooked the front of hotel. The room was large and warm, big windows, super en suite, there were tea and coffee facilities, water, hairdryer, iron and iron board, so very happy with room.
Being picky the tv was old, the remote did not work and the carpet was a little threadbare by the bed, but it didn't impact upon the general satisfaction with the room and hotel.
The grounds are just superb, whilst we were there, Canadian Geese were settled in front of hotel, the river had swans on and there is a plan in reception of public rights of way around the Estate.
The Bar and Restaurant downstairs was quiet, but this was down to the time of year. The Beverages were reasonably priced and we did eat once in the restaurant and although the menu was quite limited, the food we had was of good quality and again reasonably priced. Menu does state 7.5% discretionary gratuity added to bill. We would stay again at this lovely hotel

A lovely hotel in a beautiful, peaceful setting. The grounds are simply breathtaking and the village of Bagnor & the Watermill Theatre are a short drive or taxi ride away. As this is an older building however there was no AC to my knowledge which meant the room was hot in warm weather. Unfortunately I did not receive many VIP benefits at this hotel, just a discount at the restaurant. Late check out was not possible and I did not receive an upgrade either.
However, overall this was a great hotel to stay in and a great experience, there is lovely decorations inside and the restaurant is lovely. The staff at reception and in the restaurant were all so kind and friendly!

We chose this hotel because of its closeness to the Watermill Theatre. We found the staff on reception a bit dismissive, we weren't given much in instruction about where we were staying or where breakfast would be. The room smelt a bit damp when we got there but was Ok in most regards.

having been let down in so many ways by Hilton Group and the hotels in their group in the Newbury/Reading area...it was a breath of fresh air to stay at Donnington Grove. Looking forward to going back there next week

Very disappointed ☹️ the carpet in the bedroom had holes in it Room 202 and on arrival there were wasps/bees in the window and lots on the floor docike! The guy behind reception provided complimentary tea and coffee whilst he hoovered them up but they still kept appearing. It was very hit in the room with no windows open as they were stuck together possibly over the years with paint. However the meal in the restaurant was absolutely exquisite 😁
