Lobby is on level 2, had to stop the car at the roadside with hazard lights on to ask what are the parking options, especially when the hotel parking is full. Map of the other city carpark options provided is very detailed. Amenities provided in the lobby is great. Breakfast has decent choices but can get extremely crowded.

We had a very pleasant stay at this hotel. Everything about the room was very comfortable and we highly recommend staying here.

The hotel staff went above and beyond to help us when we encountered an issue with ETC along the way to this hotel in our rental car. (The issue had nothing to do with the hotel.) We asked the front desk how we should handle this issue as tourists and their staff and management went out of their way to make several phone calls on our behalf with the ETC staff and our rental car company explaining what happened. The hotel manager even said that if our rental car company or ETC gave us any issues when we turn our car in, to reach out to him directly and he would help us which was a very compassionate gesture to offer us.

Not only will you get a nice and comfortable hotel room if you stay here, but you will also have very emphatic and friendly staff who will go above and beyond! We are very thankful to the hotel management and staff for taking such great care of us!

We stayed in the Standard Double Room, Non Smoking (No Extra Bed, 18 sqm). The room was clean, practical, and slightly more spacious than typical business hotels. The bathroom had a small bath tub, which is customary, and a humidifier was provided where you add your own water before switching it on. Amenities such as coffee, toothbrushes, and combs were available at the lobby’s self-service corner.

Check in was smooth and the hotel already had our Expedia reservations prepared. As with most Japanese hotels, copies of our passports were taken during registration. The hotel also provides coin laundry facilities along with vending machines for drinks and beer.

The location is convenient, a short walk from Matsumoto Station and within walking distance to Matsumoto Castle. While there is a shopping mall right beside the hotel, it is currently closed. The nearest active mall is further south, closer to the bus terminal.

Overall, Richmond Hotel Matsumoto provided a comfortable stay in a well connected part of the city.

My husband and I stayed at the Richmond hotel for two nights. It’s in a great location, and the rooms were reasonably priced and clean. The staff were really kind, and helped organise luggage forwarding to our next hotel. Our only bugbear was that we could hear other people on the floor - they were pretty loud. It would be great to have had a little more sound proofing.

What we liked:

Spacious room and comfortable bed. Very big window with a nice view of the mountain.


Nice variety for the breakfast buffet in the lobby restaurant and very worth the price. The eggplant dish and the fish were some of our favourites.


Well located and walkable, 5-minutes from the bus terminal, 7-minutes to the JR train station, 12-minutes to the Matsumoto Castle.

We enjoyed our stay.


What we think can be improved:

The bathroom is functional and spacious but it smelled slightly of humidity, probably because of the bathtub, because for some reason, these Japanese hotels don’t put caulking around the bathtub and the water seeps into the crack around the wall.

The English level of staff are much better than other same tier hotel groups. There’s smell in the toilet and the staff immediately arranged a plumber to fix it when we were out. The parking is smooth but it’s first-come-first-served. 1000yen per night again the staff were nice. There are lots of restaurants and a plenty of shopping places in the area. We stayed and parked our car at the hotel, car space is first come first served. We enjoyed our stay in this hotel. The room is spacious and comfortable, the hotel is family friendly too. Would hope there are more laundry machines as all machines are either occupied or locked with unpicked up laundry. We had buffet breakfast at the hotel too, the restaurant environment was nice, food was decent.

My room was really spacious. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much run around space.

The hotel is right between Matsumoto station and Matsumoto castle. It's very strategic as I can reach the many interesting sightseeing and shopping streets on my way to the castle.

Good location. We stayed for 2 nights in a room of 18sq m. Everything in hotel is good. Breakfast was good. It will be perfect if the in-room green tea bag is stronger in taste.

Very comfortable hotel

Great hotel. Very good location. Room was very comfortable and good size for 2 adults and a 6-year old. Breakfast and other meals in attached restaurant were very enjoyable and good price. Only downside was not having any drawers/cupboard space to be able to unpack during 4-day stay - not good to have to live out of suitcases. Also no in-room safe. Overall a very good hotel to which we hope to return next year
