Nice hotel we used the Japanese style room with futon and in room shower. My GF had her period so it was good she didn’t need to use the onsen.
Room was nice and big and very close to Matsumoto castle. Only thing I was disappointed was parking fee. It’s far from tokyo so I assume many would drive if not train so I was surprised to charged extra for the overnight parking.

The cleanliness and condition of the Japanese style room was excellent with separate entrance, washroom, toilet and 3 tatami areas giving more than ample space for 3 guests.
Breakfast was good and the staff efficient and helpful.
Didn’t try the onsen as just a brief stop

Excellent classic hotel with large well appointed rooms ,comfortable beds in a fabulous location. Literally just minutes walk from Matsumoto Castle. The Onsen was superb after a long day of walking and touring. The breakfast buffet combined Japanese and Western style and was delicious. Hospitable and excellent staff.

Charming property exceptionally clean, special mention of the wonderful onsen, enjoyed our most unusual experience of sleeping in a traditional Japanese room with tatami mats. Our dinner in the restaurant was superb, kudos to the skilled chef! Matsumoto is a lovely town with a slow paced vibe , so different from other Japanese cities.

We only stayed in this hotel for 1 night so we could visit Matsumoto Castle and the location was perfect because the hotel was only a 5 mins walk from the castle. The room was clean and the bed and pillows were comfy. I would stay here again for sure.

The building itself was bit old, our room had discomfort smell in the bathroom all the time. Nice to have a public bath for relaxing. Buffet style breakfast was very busy, but lots of good selections of Japanese/western style food. I really enjoyed the locally made egg with bonito on rice!

We stayed in the older section and it is due for renovation. The toilet flush was the loudest I have ever heard. The masks on the walls show the need for paint. The dinner was good the breakfast buffet had a wide selection but none of it was outstanding.

We spent two nights at this hotel in a Japanese style room. We found the room comfortable and spacious. I very much enjoyed the public bath in the hotel and visited AM and PM for a relaxing soak. The hotel is a quirky mix of modern and traditional and we appreciated this.We had a wonderful breakfast buffet each morning in the hotel restaurant and the staff was always gelpful and kind. We found everything very walkable to this hotel. The station, castle, art museum, shopping, restaurants and coffee/tea/sweets are not far. We would definitely stay here again and we really loved the vibe of Motsumoto!

A nice, clean and tidy hotel. The staff were helpful and friendly. The rooms were clean and well appointed. The styling was classical and quite appealing.

The hotel has free access to guests for the seperate men's and women's onsens. It also has a rather nice sitting room with a selection of books (in japanese) to read/flick through.

The breakfast was a generous buffet with a large variety of hot and cold items from typical japanese fare to more usual western toast and and cereal.

We would definitely stay again.

A great hotel!

Location was pretty good as it was less than 15 minutes walk from the Matsumoto station. And there is also a city shuttle if you don't feel like walking.

It's also a short walk to the Matsumoto Castle.

I love the nostalgic vibes of the hotel and my room was very comfortable and clean.

And after a day of going around, I can have a nice soak on the public bath. Blissful!

I'll definitely stay here again when I am back!

When I booked the hotel, the reviews made me think that it would be 'ok' but not amazing. However, as soon as we arrived, I was very impressed with the quality of the hotel. The staff were very helpful and responsive. The building is gorgeous, luxurious and has a lovely historic atmosphere to it. The room was very comfortable. We didn't have time to try out the baths unfortunately - too busy exploring Matsumoto and what a lovely place it is. We didn't eat at the hotel - the only thing I would say is that the menus on offer (dinner and breakfast) feel a bit formal, structured and a bit pricey. So we headed into town to explore the bakeries and izakayas instead. Very close by is a superb izakaya called 'Hikage' - the menu was in Japanese but a lovely member of staff translated it all for us and recommended some top notch dishes and local sake - all for a good price. The evening at Hikage was definitely one of our highlights. Final comment to make is that the location of the Kagetsu is absolutely brilliant. Overall, this place is highly recommended.

We really enjoyed our stay here and wished we could stay for longer! Lovely building and reception. Little rooftop for a view of the castle. Traditional pyjamas and hot bathing available in the basement (plus normal showers etc in the rooms.) It was very comfortable. We used the nearby parking with a discount via the hotel. Lots of good amenities in the room. Lovely area and walking distance to key sights. We recommend the Eonta bar nearby for jazz music and night time drinks!

Fantastic service - they thought of everything. Understanding that not all guests speak Japanese, they have each a translation device so as to minimize miscommunication. Each meal is a fancy affair - with a display of culinary aplomb beautifully presented. Love the onsens - both public and reservables - they provided a variety of experiences: indoor and outdoor, stone and wood. Our inroom outdoor onsen was great too. It was altogether a lovely experience.

This was our second visit to Matsumoto and this hotel is outstanding. I would recommend a taxi (about 1000 yen) from the station as it is a bit of a walk and the hotel is in a side street with no English signage outside the hotel. Once inside it is lovely. The lobby is traditional in style with beautiful dark wood and the staff welcomed us with green tea and a small snack. The room was nice, I would recommend a twin room as they are larger. The only quibble was the step down from the bathroom. It was very quiet and there was little traffic on the street. Wifi was good. We had the set dinner which was delicious and reasonably priced. Only 5 minutes walk to the castle. Be sure to go back at night when it is lit up. What set this hotel apart were the staff who were attentive, courteous and went out of their way to help. There is also a shuttle bus to the station. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay there again.

This is a lovely hotel. The room was a good size with nice decor and clean. Everything we needed was in the room. There was a welcome tea and snack. It was hard to find but I was given the wrong information at the Tourist Information and went the wrong way. Breakfast was good in a pleasant and spacious dining room. The windows opened so we could have fresh air. The staff were excellent and so helpful with where to find restaurants etc and they spoke good English. Lots of restaurants and shops nearby and close to the castle. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Experience equally poor. You can’t remove the plugs from the bath or basin without being overwhelmed by the smell of sewerage. Tatami mattresses thinner than a blanket so we were literally sleeping on floorboards. Felt like we were sleeping in an evacuation centre. Inclusive breakfast not edible so we are forgoing our last breakfast voucher and will eat at the station. The new section of Kagetsu seems better by reviews but the Annex is a clever marketing strategy to make an inhabitable space habitable/profitable and package it as “an authentic Japanese experience”.

Booking in is quick and efficient. A tea and sweet are offered on arrival.
The lobby and sitting area are spacious and well presented, as is the restaurant where a fairly extensive buffet breakfast is served.
The room is also spacious and well set out. The bed is very comfortable as is the nightwear.
Staff are very helpful and friendly.
Love the fact that you are lent a smart phone for your stay and can use it to phone the UK and elsewhere for free. The location is fabulous for the castle, for shopping and eating . There is free WiFi throughout the city.
This is a well cared for hotel which is reflected in the calibre of the staff

Superb hotel in Matsumoto

I was thoroughly delighted by my brief stay at this hotel. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, attending immediately to any guest who happened to sit down in their lovely lounge area - providing a complimentary tea without question or hesitation.

After staying several nights in a small modern hotel near Tokyo which had characteristically tiny rooms with no window-views, I was incredibly pleased to have a spacious room with a fine view over Matsumoto. My guess was that the main building of the hotel was originally built some time ago, based on standard room sizes of the time and possibly based on contemporary American room & furniture designs. To be frank, I felt that I was staying in a cozy hotel in Vermont or New Hampshire, but that the charming & attentive staff are mostly Japanese and that there are apparently onsen-like baths for ladies & for gentlemen (I didn't see them for lack of time). For anyone who doesn't speak Japanese, there was at least one native speaker of American English in the reception team. There is an annex building which I did not see - perhaps its rooms differ in design & size from the main building, but I would guess that everything that this hotel does is top-notch for its price category. Only on my departure did I realise that the hotel seeks to follow the \"Mingei spirit of Matsumoto folk art furniture\" (& ceramic?) design. I am no expert on Mingei spirit, but it certainly seems to work in practice - this is a fine hotel!

Well, I have to say, I am incredibly disappointed. We were excited to stay here, as we chose to spend New Years here. But this was by far the worst hotel we booked in japan.

The rate was higher due to New Years, but the service and hotel did not match the price at all whatsoever. It did not feel clean, looking under the desk we found questionable dried liquids. Not a place I feel comfortable walking around barefoot. We did not check out the baths on the bottom floor due to the rest of the hotel.

They prioritized group buses over individual hotel customers, odd considering the company books despite customer feedback, but individuals make the decision to choose your hotel. At breakfast a massive group took up most of the hours, and they made all individual guests wait a half hour or more.

Apparently even if you are a hotel guest but don’t have a reservation you can’t be seated (there were plenty of spots in the restaurants still available). The cafe doesn’t serve food past 7:30 (we went to after the restaurant turned us away with no option to wait at 7:34). And the hotel does not offer room service past 7:30. Literally what.
We asked for restaurant suggestions the man replied “all restaurants are closed” which was not true as we found a fantastic pizza place (among others) “Pizzeria Aletta” try it, you won’t be disappointed.
Our check in woman there was very nice and helpful.
All in all, I would not pay more than $50-65 a night to stay here. Location great.

Apparently even if you are a hotel guest but don’t have a reservation you can’t be seated (there were plenty of spots in the restaurants still available). The cafe doesn’t serve food past 7:30 (we went to after the restaurant turned us away with no option to wait at 7:34). And the hotel does not offer room service past 7:30. Literally what.
We asked for restaurant suggestions the man replied “all restaurants are closed” which was not true as we found a fantastic pizza place (among others) “Pizzeria Aletta” try it, you won’t be disappointed.
Our check in woman there was very nice and helpful.
All in all, I would not pay more than $50-65 a night to stay here. Location great.

A pricier option but well worth it

Had a mult-night stay here while exploring Matsumoto City and some of the nearby towns. The station is about 15 minutes’ walk along flat streets (good for luggage). The hotel also runs a shuttle twice per AM and PM. The property is a few streets off the main road so nice and quiet, and Matsumoto castle is about 5 minutes away.
Overall this is a very nice hotel. The service is outstanding and the amenities are generous in the rooms. Everyone speaks enough English so no worries if you don’t speak Japanese. Getting around the new building and older annex building can be a bit confusing at first as the floors are split but you figure it out pretty quickly. The Japanese buffet breakfast is very yummy, and there is a public bath on site which is good for achy tourist bodies.
My only con would be in the bathroom. I found the shower water pressure just a bit too weak and it was tricky getting in as the tub is quite tall- keep this in mind if you’re short or unsteady on your feet. Otherwise no other complaints.
If I’m ever back in Matsumoto I’ll definitely consider staying here again.

Very charming hotel in local arts and crafts styles with characteristic local furniture. The coffee shop shows this style particularly well. It is worth visiting for the ambiance and the good coffee and homemade cakes. The location is ideal as it is close to the old streets with characteristic black and white facades. The castle is a short walk away and is a must visit sight. The only down side was the air conditioning which was far too warm; we had to open the window to cool down the room.

The best 2 things for this hotel is it’s proximity to Matsumoto Castle and it’s onsen. Otherwise, it’s ok.
