This place is hard to review as they are giving you a feel for the “old west “. Shared bathrooms ( mostly ) Loud as it’s next to the Union Pacific main line and the doors loosely shut. They do give you a “white noise machine” and earplugs. It is located in town so you can easily get food and do some shopping. Also, parking is on the street and is paid parking between 10am to 6 pm. No AC also.

I hit my head getting out of bed and on the ceiling. Im 6ft tall. The bed platform is about 4in off the floor, old mattress, not very comfortable. Basically you have to sweat out of bed, onto your knees and not hit your head on the ceiling. The place is carpeted in what look like carpet samples from the 80’s.

We were most impressed with the detailed instructions for everything including parking, shower use, check in and checkout. We enjoyed the balcony as well. We loved this place. We stayed here with several friends for a disc golf tournament nearby. Loved the rich colors and almost haunted feeling, the low price. The shower heads are tall enough for my 6’9” husband. Check in and out is simple. The beds are comfortable which is most important for us. There’s no shampoo/conditioner so bring your own. Sheets/pillows/blankets/towels are all nice. Perfect for a place to rest without breaking the bank. We will be back!

This was a good place to stay in Truckee. Close to the resorts. My only issue is the limited parking. It was incredibly stressful trying to secure one of the limited overnight parking spaces, especially on a just weekend. For only this reason, I would not come back.

I loved that there was halfway affordable accommodation in Truckee and the room was clean and bright. But West River was also somewhat awkward, especially given the price range of over $200/night which is cheap only by Truckee standards: my private bathroom had faucets which sprayed water out the sides, no shower curtain and no body wash soap (just an empty container). The place also felt a little unwelcoming, especially for a hostel: the initial hall felt like a combination of an empty brothel and an empty fast food restaurant.

Stayed in the annex. Super nice staff, very cool vibe. Was there for my cousin’s wedding so didn’t get to hang out at the little bar at all but will next time. Friends who were through-hiking the PCT highly recommended and they were right.

It's a hostel and I opted for the bunk because it's the most affordable option in Truckee. Its a good deal and nice people there. It's my 3rd time staying there and love the building. I was able to work in the bar area in the morning and noone was awake so I could do my work and drink my coffee in peace.

This was my first stay, but probably not my last. Great location, great price, great place if you just need a chill place to sleep vs a resort! Nothing fancy, but it was comfortable and suited my needs. The other guests were friendly and they even have a sauna.

A blast living in the "past"!!!
This is a really quirky place to stay in a good way. It looks like the former brothel it was! It has the original bar still serving local brews. Rooms are small, but the bed was super comfortable. It has two outside patios and multiple indoor shared space areas. The communal kitchen was great for a multi day stay. We had a private shower, but the shared ones were very clean. I feel this site is better suited for singles and couples without children. The atmosphere is very relaxed, but for adults only.

This is a wonderfully quirky old-timey hotel. I stayed in the annex building. I had my own room, although the bathroom (very clean) was shared. There was no AC, but a large box fan did the trick. If you're a Ritz kind of person, this will not be your scene, but if you miss the days of youth-hostel, carefree travel, then this will be a great stay!

This hotel was perfect for me and my parents. It felt like a clean artist commune and was far more comfortable for us than a sterile regular hotel. The staff was wonderful and accommodating and the vibe was quirky and fun. There's a separate compost for treats for the chickens that live next door! I'll definitely be staying here again next time I visit Truckee!

The third floor room was very warm. We managed to cool it down by pulling the bed out a bit, and putting the industrial strength fan in the window. That also helped drown out the train sounds

I was meeting a friend for the weekend on short notice. Other traditional hotels were either booked or way too expensive for my short stay. I booked a dorm style room that had 8 bunk capacity but there was only one other person. The bunk was comfortable and clean. Shared bathroom/shower also clean. As a bonus there's even a small bar in the lobby. I totally scored getting a cheap place stay on short notice.

I was originally enthusiastic about the character of this place but the artificial floral smell of the room mostly found in bathrooms is still in my nose. Even after a legendary powder day on the mountain. The mattresses are like 6 inches thick over wood. And the bunk beds are for kids. I would expect this kind of place for like $50, not what I paid. Oh... plan on taking a shower? Good luck!

Bunk beds were new experience for grandson. Would have liked to have been able to check in before 3:30 and staff seemed vague about parking hours and did not clearly communicate where to park overnight. Would have been good to have printed map of where and when parking was free. Staff took picture with my cell phone but this was not adequate.

Sound carries pretty well from the communal spaces and hallway into the private rooms on the lower floor. The hostel provides white noise machines which was very helpful but we felt uncomfortable watching movies or making any noise in our room and were awoken a couple times by noise from the other guests or staff.

Kept it simple, and the Redlight was perfect for that. Room was great: comfortable bed, and clean, although it was a little warm for my liking, and I couldn’t figure out how to turn off the heat. Bathroom down the hall was clean and no problem to access. Loved the speakeasy up front!

A Fun Place to Stay! Rd Rm Descriptions Carefully!
We accidentally booked a room without a bathroom, where we would have been required to use the communal restrooms. (That detail was hard to tell in the hotels.com description.) Fortunately, we were able to move our reservation to rooms (different ones on Friday and Saturday due to availability) that had their own bathrooms. The hotel and staff are quirky, but the service was good, and the rooms are very clean and safe. Also, the hotel is conveniently located to restaurants and shops on the main stretch of Truckee.

This unique property is in a beautifully refurbished brothel. It has rooms with private baths and some rooms with very clean and comfortable shared bathrooms. The communal kitchen, sitting and entertainment areas are completely charming.

The ambiance was wonderful. We felt transported back in time. The room was clean, comfortable and well decorated. Because it is also a "bunk house" it has a shared kitchen and a shared common room that are well appointed. It was within a short walking distance to the downtown area and a short drive to other reacreational areas.

I love this place and have stayed there 4 times. However, I've always stayed during shoulder season so haven't known it to have more than 5 or 6 guest staying there. My bunk room has only been just me. I'm not sure I'd be up for sleeping in an 8 bunk bed room when it's full of young skier jocks. Or would I?

Not worth the money
This is a hostel, and should be clearly stated as such. We paid for a private room, which supposedly is normally ~200/night. It was a tiny room with barely enough room for the queen bed. The mattress was old and uncomfortable, and was set directly on a metal cot. The bathroom sink had separate faucets for hot and cold water. Bottom line, the room was uncomfortable and unacceptable, especially for the price.
The area was great, we could walk to the restaurants in downtown Truckee. The lobby with the tiny bar was cute, and the person behind the bar, who also did the checkins, was polite, courteous and helpful.
The wifi worked well at least.

Fun, funky place very convenient to downtown Truckee. The bar area is great to grab a drink. The private rooms are small but functional. Not a lot of noise isolation so bring earplugs.
