a very good value for money option for those wanting to stay near glasgow.
Reasonable commute by car to the city (1/2 hour or so) - suggest you go the more Country route.
Local area isn’t significant, so suggest you eat in the city.
Our large room got a lovely sunset, whilst sitting on a large raised couch.
Quiet. (though the birds can get noisy for a bit - nothing the property can do about that though).
Sheep in the garden !
Recommended.

Wouldnt stay again

Room was clean enough. Staff extremely unwelcoming. Demanded to see my id before allowing me to check in. Never had that with an hotel before. Not sure who they thought i was….. after a 6 hour drive you just cba with that.
Around 10pm horrible food smell came into room.
Will never stay again.

Look beyond the negative reviews

Our usual overnight stop was not available and this was he nearest alternative with a reasonable rating. However, I did not read the reviews till just before we travelled and was a little concerned at what we might find. Other than the unusual check-in, everything was fine and the room was clean, spacious and comfortable. We had been asked to contact the property 24 hours in advance but, despite trying, this proved impossible

Truly Awful Hotel

I checked in with my daughter for an intended 6-night stay. We were given a room on the ground floor and there were no curtains which we thought was odd. There was a strong smell of damp and we instantly noticed how dirty the room was. Dust everywhere, rips in the sheets, stains in the toilet, old furniture. We didn’t have any confidence that the sheets were changed between guests. The whole place just felt very run down and neglected.
We decided we were just going to stay 1 night and move on but my daughter suddenly said that someone was looking through the window - the bottom half of the windows were frosted and a man was pressing his face up against the glass to see inside which understandably really upset my daughter. I repeatedly asked a member of staff who was in their gardens peering in but the guy just played dumb.
We called a taxi and checked out immediately - we tried to get our money back but have been told it’s not possible.
Please please read other reviews and don’t book this dreadful place!

Ok for one night.

Shower didn’t work at all.
Bathroom hot water took ages to warm up.
Windows need sealing as they howled every time the wind picked up.

On a more positive note the beds were comfortable.
I’d guess at the images of the hotel would be about 10 years old.

Cheap and easy

If you need somewhere cheap and comfortable, this is the hotel for you. There are zero luxuries, and it is outdated. The room was very spacious however, the bedding had holes in it. The place was clean.

The TV works, but it is very slow in recognising channel changes or the TV guide coming up. Lack of HD channels.

The receptionist needs to work on their mannerisms and explain the situation clearly. I had to hunt for the WIFI password as no one is available after you check in.

There is a lovely garden however, no one told me how to access it or use it. During the warm days it would have been ideal to eat or work from, but again zero information provided.

I was there for three days and found the place good to stay however, the WIFI is unstable.

Haunted House

We arrived early and got lost along the way because the photos posted online were pure misleading. The whole place outside is unkempt, looked liked a haunted house the door was closed, we knocked endlessly but there was no response. After about 10mins of knocking, calling ( which were unanswered) a young lady opened the door, handed me the keys with few instructions and disappeared. The room was cold and I called the numbers that were displayed at the reception but they gave us some shady excuse as to why we couldn’t get heating . There was a jar in the room with ashes in it. I couldn’t sleep. I woke up at 3am and I could have sworn there was a dark figure standing on the edge of our bed watching us😂😂. I turned on the lights and stayed up until we checked out very fast in the morning. Overall that house is haunted. Creaking everywhere and flickering lights. Worst stay of our entire trip and I would not recommend anyone to stay there.

It was disguting blood stains on my bed on arrival, poo down the toilet and hadnt even changed bin bag had someones dorty toothbrush in there. then when told the man he rolled his eyes at me like it was my fault. The noise was horrendous with doors banging all night shook us up bad no sleep quality atall for 2 nights.

Second time I've stayed here and loved it just as much this time as last. There was some sort of annoying alarm/noise going off quite late at night which stopped just as I was away to call for help. Other than that it was another lovely stay!

Please sort out banging doors.

Out of a 2 night stay, the 1st night Fri eve was awful due to Front and inner door banging continous by people coming and going from 8pm until 12.45am also loud talking, no respect for others at the hotel. Spoke to receptionest to report and Sat night was peaceful. My room was clean, shower great, big room, comfortable bed Dated decor, but this didn't bother me. Nice garden. I would suggest soft closing entrance doors plus big notice requesting quiteness for other hotel users on the evening. There is a local shop walking distance to grab milk and teabags/coffee etc. My room had kettle plus cups which I appreciate plus hairdryer & t.v. I took photos as to how I left the room, as you put the key on reception desk on leaving. Anyone could enter the room on your departure and do whatever.

One night was enough.

Very tired looking building and interior which is such a shame as there are many traditional and lovely features within.
Toilet and sink were very clean , the shower however was not and was so bad i drew attention to it when we left in the morning (we should have been staying for a second night but didnt want to), there was green algae? fungus? mildew? on the seal at floor level in the walk in shower and soap run marks in the shower underneath the bottles in a holder attached to the wall which hadn't even been scrubbed off from previous use.
Not a good look and most probably a potential health hazard. As an NHS professional healthcare worker i felt strongly enough about it to take someone into the room at point of checking out to show them how bad it looks. I shouldn't have had to do this. No person reviewing that room would think differently from myself that includes staff. Sheer laziness to address such an issue.
The hydraulic arms above the doors need maintanance or replacement as they didnt seem to work and slamming doors were heard throughout the night. I do appreciate the hotel staff have no control over guest smoking habits but that is the purpose of these arms to ensure soft closure of doors.
Now i know why there is a no refund policy for this establishment and even though we had paid for a second night we just wanted home. That said the bedding was clean as were the towels.

5) after the first night, asked for a service and the cup/spoon used, was rinsed and put back instead of being washed so stains in the cup and the spoon was sticky
6) told no heating could be put on, due to it being summer - but understandably given another duvet (probably the night guards)
7) very hard to communicate with the receptionist whose never at reception
8) time of checkout - called the receptionist to say I needed to give the keys back and she said “leave it on the desk” so much for hospitality - also anyone could’ve taken the keys and ultimately blame could’ve gone to myself
9) Noted the building and interior wasn’t the best - but I won’t complain about stuff that can’t be accounted for

We arrived at 8pm and shown to our room. The ceiling lights did not work so we had to manage with 1 lamp. Quite a large room so 1 table lamp was not adequate. There were tea/coffee facilities but there was no way you could fill the kettle. There was a sink in the bathroom but the kettle was too big fit under the forcet. Used the cups instead to fill kettle but the the kettle didn't work. The room was clean and tidy although a little tired. Comfortable warm beds but the room was cold. Luckily they provided heavy quilt covers. Staying for 1 night was fine but i wouldn’t choose to stay longer.

The bed was clean and comfortable. Sink and toilet pan clean. The rest of the bedroom was past its "Best before". Holes in bedroom carpet covered by a tatty rug. Bathroom particularly dusty. The signage was incredibly difficult to see, almost impossible to see from the road. There was no opportunity to have breakfast. It's OK if you just want a basic bed for a night.

Don’t think we will be back…

Was alright apart from the hotel is very dated and needed a good clean. The beds were comfy don’t get me wrong but overall cleanliness was poor. There was damp/mould in the shower which travelling with a 4 month old is not ideal. There windows were filthy and there was cobwebs on them. There was also dead spiders in the bathroom of both rooms which we had booked so a good dusting/ hoover is needed.
Such a shame because the views from the windows were stunning.

The check in was very unprofessional also.

From the outside I thought this was going to be a nice little stay. I was wrong. The house was run down, dirty and stunk like damp. Everywhere you looked either had a stain, mould, a hole or a cobweb. Genuinely didn’t even want to take my shoes off. The decor was like something from an abandoned house. The only good thing was that the bed was comfy. Despite the holy stained bedding. Never again

The outside is gorgeous and has really cute grounds, just an immediate good vibe. We ended up with a room much larger than expected - it felt very luxurious! The inside decor was all quite nice as well. The employee there was so helpful and kind. Just an overall really lovely experience!

Arrived at 11.30pm. Room on ground floor was huge and warm with 2 very comfortable beds. Made a brew and went to bed. Bathroom tiny but not an issue. Staff seemed friendly but didn't really see anyone. Paid extra as we arrived after 10pm.

The beds were clean and there was hot water,there was no food the gardens were unkempt and the rooms were in a word filthy not cleaned or dusted properly no staff available if you want something you have to phone someone. On leaving the bedroom door was knocked at 9.45 am to say if your not out by 10am then you have to pay an xtra £10 Pity they hadn’t been so fastidious about the rest of the property .Would not stay here again even in an emergency situation.Take a look round folks get out the paint and rollers and then some bleach .

I chose Bonkle house because it was different to what i usually book & we enjoyed our stay.
The only staff we saw was on check-in to give us the key, who was pleasant but i cant comment beyond that.

Don't be put off by other reviews!

I'm glad I booked this before I read other reviews, or I might have missed out on a total gem! I booked the superior double room (Manor Suite) and it was just what I was hoping for. Large, bright, warm, clean. Lots of period features. Gorgeous ensuite bathroom. Lots of room for storing clothes in the walk through dressing area.

I was travelling alone, and other than some doors banging from other guests, I had a really peaceful and relaxing time. A great night's sleep in the huge bed too!

If I ever have need to stay over in the same area I wouldn't hesitate to return here.

The photos on the site are NOT what you will walk into when you arrive. I was prepared for an old and quaint building, staying for 3 days somewhere that was beautiful and quirky. We booked a room for 3 nights, and if my husband hadn’t been exhausted from driving all day, we would’ve left immediately. The room we stayed in was musty and dusty, with a very heavy smell of mildew/mold in the bathroom. The bathroom door was broken so that we had to put something against it from the outside to keep it shut while we used it, and then knock to have someone move whatever was against the door when we wanted out. I tried to call AND email from the room to tell them of our problems, but still to this day, (3.5 weeks later) no response. No one in attendance at the desk to talk to.

My son has a mold allergy, and there was no way we could’ve stayed longer than the few hours we needed to sleep, (we had to keep a chair in front of the bathroom door to keep it closed for the least amount of mold exposure, possible) we left super early the next morning, and left our key. Expedia tried but could not get us any type of refund for the 2 nights we forfeit, and I’m sure this place is used to people not staying past the first night, as everyone’s keys were on the desk when we left in the AM, and I’d heard other guests say they were staying longer. There are other places, comparably priced. Skip this one, especially if you have a nose on your face. I’ve never had to write such a bad review before.

This was absolutely the worst property I have ever stayed at. There were stains everywhere: Sheets, Floor, Walls, Ceiling. The heat was broken and when we asked an employee to come check on it, he said “it will turn on soon”; which it never did.

We had a huge room with sofa and 2 beds. Decor is dated but still was comfortable and nice and warm. Adequate facilities - bathroom / TV/ tea & coffee.
No option for breakfast it is just bed.
House keeping could have waited until later in the day to knock on as woke us up early on Sunday, wasn’t very happy about that. Mistake on check out time, I thought 11 and it was 10am, they were understanding which was appreciated.

This property was so rundown and awful we left a day early ( we had nowhere else for escape to on the first night). The caretaking family were sweet and moved us to a cleaner room but it still had a musty smell and the bedsheets were old and soft. We won’t book ahead from photos on Expedia again.

Badly neglected, stained towels, no service

The owners need to put a lot more effort into what could be a nice place, but is currently extremely run down, and service is non-existent.
We were met by a child, a bit confused by the paperwork, and taking instructions from unseen adults in a back room. That’s the last we saw of any staff. We had booked for 3 people in the triple room, but we realised in the morning there were only 2 towels and one was stained. The front desk had a number to ring for assistance, and three more if no-one answered. All 4 numbers went unanswered at 8am and none had a voicemail facility.
We had booked for two nights but given these issues, made other arrangements for the second night instead. We couldn’t even communicate this to the owners as there was no one there!
It’s very expensive as well for what it is. The paperwork seems a bit obsessed with outlining potential extra charges. No breakfast facilities, and no other options in the town other than an Asda.
Overall an unwelcoming experience.

Not as haunted as it looks

Ok, this place is called BONKLE HOUSE. That's almost enough in itself.

This is a lovely old house. We were kind of hoping it would be haunted - I mean, it LOOKS haunted. But alas, it was not.

What a lovely space! We really enjoyed staying here. The room was so much bigger than we expected. The shower was.... tall. But watch the step down. It's a doozy.

One thing of note - some places it's listed that they have laundry on site. They do not. Oh well. I found a good laundromat down the street.

The staff was so wonderful. Our neighbors had a very loud TV and they took care of it so quickly. Even offered to move our room if we wanted.

The grounds were so lovely!

I really recommend this place. Just don't fall out of the shower like I did.

This property does not look the photos, which were obviously years old. Theres fenced off areas and a load of bricks. Plus it was all locked up and looked a bit eerie. However once we got an answer and got to our room we were pleasantly surprised. Room was clean as was the bedding and towels. Bed comfy. Tv and a load of books in the room.
Didnt have much to do with owners except check in and to get another set of towels. Hotel was quiet and we had a good sleep.
