Lovely hotel with a lot of history which was displayed around various walls at reception,
If you don’t mind walking up various sets of stairs to get to your room (we were on level 1) you’ll be fine. There weren’t a lot of stairs but it was “walk up a couple then down a corridor, through a door and few more steps, another corridor and other door”. The floors creaked also but it was an old building so can’t complain. Free on site parking but be aware, pigeons live in the roof of the parking area and graced us with a present! We were able to walk to all the sites we wanted to visit so it was really hardly in that respect. No meals available on site but there is a bar on site.

It is a very old building and we had to climb up and down many stairs, but we are both agile so that was fine. We had a tiny television, which we didn't try out. We only had 1 set of towels in the room and not enough milk for drinks, so we asked at reception to rectify this. We were asked if we had looked in the wardrobe, we had, but found nothing. Extra milk and towels were then supplied. Later we decided to make hot drinks and discovered one large mug and one considerably smaller mug!. I sent my daughter to request a decent size mug, the reception staff did not think they had access to remedy this, but it was sorted eventually. When we checked out the receptionist let us make our way with our luggage to the front door, it was locked, so we came back and she confirmed our exit was out of the back door. I feel the reception staff had failed in certain areas, poor communication and customer service!

Despite saying pet friendly, the hotel failed to mention a £15 cost per animal per night which was unexpected, and extortionate given the state of the place.
Parking £5 per night, again unexpected.
Room very very basic, small and hot. We didn't sleep 1st night due to heat/lack of air circulation and outside noise. We bought ourselves a fan for night 2 which helped.
Wonder if hotel attracts rowdy guests with no respect for sleeping guests? Or were we just there at the wrong time?
In general, decor very tired and outdated. Could use a referb desperately.
On the positive side, the hotel is central. One can access town amenities on foot, and the hotel is steeped in history which is nice.
Would visit Shrewsbury again but find alternative accommodation.

We stayed for one night and were very pleased with our choice. The hotel was very clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. Ok, it is a little dated but on the other hand the building is full of history and character. Parking on site at a discounted price very much appreciated considering its town centre location. There is no breakfast or restaurant facility, but who would not want to venture the few yards outside the hotel where you are spoilt for choice for lovely wide ranging places to eat. Look forward to staying here again.

Very central, so great location. Lovely, old building, badly in need of renovation. That said, a cheaper option than most available when we were looking, so depending on your priorities you might feel it’s value for money. One of our rooms at the front of the hotel overlooked the road, which can be a bit noisy, if you are a light sleeper. The rooms were clean and had all the basics. Staff were all lovely and very helpful.

The hotel is need a of a little updating, but as it's 14th Century it's very old! Charles Dickens stayed here along with many famous Tudor times people! The family room (one double bed and one single) we had was on the 3rd floor and there was no lift (even though there are signs for lift everywhere), it was quite a climb, if you are elderly or have difficulty with stairs I would recommend asking for first floor room. It was pretty hot also as it was a heatwave as we stayed. We had 2 fans in the room on consistently which did help, but it was 31 degrees outside. The room was a good size for a family and dog. The parking is good as only £5 for the time we stayed from checking in at 3pm and out at 11am next day. We wanted to go shopping so we asked if we could leave the car for the day and the staff said that's fine, so basically 2 days of parking for £5 which is brilliant for the centre of Shrewsbury. We also had a dog which was £15 which was not mentioned on the platform we booked. Overall for the price it's not bad, if you are out and about and just sleeping there, it's clean, basic (old small TV, no USB ports), shower a little dated that worked fine and clean bath big enough for an adult. Lots of history in there if you are a history buff and the staircase is from the 14th century. I would stay again for the price and the parking and the family enjoyed it, just would ask for a first floor room!

Creaky doors and floorboards everywhere. The room was clean and the bathroom was spacious. No lift. A long walk to get to our room, so not good for people who have poorer mobility. The reception staff were pleasant.

The hotel was in poor condition and dirty in places, room was tidy but needed deep clean. Bath had several rust marks and although clean parts of room could do with a bit more attention. Parking was good apart from the pigeons! Wasn't told about price of parking until booked in, needs to be more upfront. I would imagine hotel was top rate in its day now needs lots of money spent on it to bring it up to modern standards. Dogs in bedrooms I'm still not sure.

Stayed here 2 or 3 times. What they offer is basic, but I believe awaiting refurbishment. On 1 visit I was woken about 7.30am, by the bedroom window rattling loudly. I looked out and a window cleaner with a brush and water system was cleaning the window.

I spoke to the reception and was advised to email the manager.. I sent 2 emails and rang twice. No response was received.

Don't expect to be woken early, in that fashion.

Prices are cheap, but I advise to book somewhere else.

The hotel is pleasent and based in the centre so it's ideal to get to all areas within a few minutes walk. The rooms are a bit 'tired' and rough around the edges, but clean. Our mattress was a bit tired as well but managed to sleep OK. We also sadly had a room over a through route from the centre so lots of noise from groups walking through in the night. But this won't affect all rooms. Overall would I stay again, yes. Value is good for a central area. Parking is available but is limited so getting in early is recommended.

Horrible hotel. Something out of a horror movie. Room horrible, beds belong in a prison. Totally different to pictures. Overall the second worst place ever stayed. Shower was lethal turning to scalding with a tiny movement. Staff bored and unable to do anything. Ghost hotel with hardly anyone there. Couldn’t find anywhere else or would have left immediately

In the room the carpet was filthy. The mattresses were too soft. The internet was poor.

The downstairs area looked very uninviting, like it had been left to rot. It was dark and depressing. There was no nice common area to sit and relax in.

The carpet on the way to the rooms looked like it hadn't been changed since the 1950s and was threadbare and dirty. The area near the landing toilets was old and smelled of sewage

The whole place needs an absolutely thorough makeover.

Got in after a 15 hour day to no hot water. So I had to settle for a tepid warm bath & straight to bed.

Hotel is a great building with plenty of character but unfortunately everything is so worn out & tired. No plugs near the bed, very small tv & paid as much as a nice hotel. Not good 👍 I would not recommend.

Not the greatest place I have stayed in, had a room that faced onto the main road and barely had any sleep both nights.... rooms are very dated and in need of an urgent upgrade. I left the door hanger on asking for room to be serviced but on my return I found that the cleaner had just folded up wet and dirty towels and put them back on the radiator. There are no facilities to get food here at the hotel and the bar was not open at any time during our visit. Not faciliated for people with mobility issues either.

The Lion Hotel is ideally situated to explore Shrewsbury on foot and you can leave your car on the property, pay at the desk rather than the machine for £5 per day. It is a property that is both historic and with character, having said that the communal areas looked very tired. The room was spacious with a high ceiling, brown furniture and bare floorboards which squeaked with every step so be aware if you are prone to waltzing in your sleep.

The parking is convinient and well priced, but my car did end up absolutely covered in bird poo. The spaces are small and a bit tricky too.
There was a dirty towel with some brown patches on, very off-putting seeing this post shower.
The room is boiling and it's hard to cool it down (this was in March).
The walls seem a bit thin as we could hear the TV pretty clearly from other rooms throughout the day and into the evening.
The staff are friendly and nice enough.
The location of the hotel was good.

The location is excellent - everything within easy walking distance. Excellent parking for guests too. Hotel itself is very tired and clearly needs a lot of work, it’s a very old building full of character but rooms could do with a revamp. Having said that the rooms are spacious, clean and warm. There’s plenty of hot water and decent showers and linens are good quality and clean. The windows are single glazed (due to age of building) therefore can be a bit noisy - we took ear plugs which solved that problem. Go with the right attitude and appreciate you’re in a historic building and you will enjoy your stay.

It is a wonderful historic building, but very run down . Some parts, eg the listed ballroom is closed needing roof repairs. Threadbare carpets, although bedding and towels changed each day there was poor bathroom supplies. I believe it is for sale. So fingers crossed because it’s in a good position with a car park. No resturant, or bar snacks. There is an excellent Spanish tapas restaurant round the corner.m and Peaberry a few yards down the street great for breakfast.

Although I paid for a Junior room, all we got was extra space.
The bed was a small double and the mattress didn'tfit the bed base, the mattress over hung, room was cold with no carpets. Only one plug in the room which we found when we were leaving the room.
The shower was too low, my partner is 6ft, he couldn't have a proper shower.
We could hear every noise outside and its a busy road. Hardly slept, won't be staying again.

The only good thing is the room was clean & the parking was cheap.

Can’t though believe they didn’t know the somewhat antique TV in the room didn’t work and had clearly not been plugged in and used recently. Also that their USP - secure parking in the middle of Shrewsbury - comes at an additional cost of £10. Stated elsewhere, but not alongside the sales blurb in a fully open way.

Sadly this historic hotel is in need of complete refurbishment. The carpets are worn, mismatched and date from 1980s. The shower was rusty, the mattress was so old you could feel the base through it, and the tv didn’t pick up many channels. Generally shabby and clearly not refurbished since it apparently housed illegal migrants in 2022. A real shame as it’s in a prime location with lots of original features.

Full of history, charm and character in the charming Grade 1 listed building! 3rd time I’ve been and will happily becoming again when In Shrewsbury. Close to town, pubs, the river, shops and the city centre.
Even Charles Dickens stayed her many MANY years ago!

Only issue was radiator would not turn down/off and heating on 24hrs. Could open windows so quiet enough area not to disturb us. Good value onsite parking. The Lion Hotel mirrors the Tudor vibe found throughout Shrewsbury. Since then it’s had a refresh in the ‘70s (1970’s), and the management has spared no expense to maintain the Fawlty Towers character of the period, complete with shower curtains and a shower at chest height. An ideal place for the older generation wishing to take a trip down memory lane or show grandchildren a glimpse of the previous century. Whatever the case, you won’t be cold as the heating is very effective. And no need need for a kettle either, the hot water is hot, hot, hot….
