Overall, this is a magical place. The setting of the hotel exceeded expectations. It's perched at the top of a huge hill with views of the countryside in every direction. Be aware that you'll be driving basically straight uphill at one point! You can explore the entire castle complex next-door free of charge, which I definitely recommend! Arriving later in the day to stormy weather, we didn't get to take advantage of the hotel's beautiful terrace. But we enjoyed exploring the spooky hallways and also had a great dinner in the restaurant. Unfortunately, there were a couple of issues with our room. First, the A/C did not appear to be working, we had it set to the lowest setting and the room was still very warm, which made for not the best night's sleep. Second, the temperature control for the main rainfall shower head was apparently broken, nothing we did could get the temperature down from scalding hot. Luckily the temperature control for the handheld hose was working, so we were able to use that. The room was lovely otherwise, the bathroom was beautiful and the windows opened right out to a view of the castle. If we'd been able to stay another night, I would have raised these issues to the management, but we just had the one night and an early checkout, so I didn't get a chance to bring it up. The staff were lovely and I'm sure they would have tried to help. I honestly wish we could have stayed longer!

I recently had the pleasure of staying at this hotel, and I must say, it's an absolute gem! From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the stunning architecture and the welcoming atmosphere hugo was grat and very helpful 🏨. The rooms were incredibly comfortable and well-appointed, offering everything I needed for a relaxing stay. The hotel's amenities, like the. If you're ever in the area, this place is a must-visit and definitely worth a detour.

It’s a real treat staying here. What a fun place to stay, a hotel that is part of a 15th C castle. The facilities are great. The tavern on the property had excellent food. The rooms are spacious and very nice.

Warm and efficient welcome by Joao. Was offered help with bags. Hotels.com reward in room. Clean, tidy and comfortable room. Service at dinner equally excellent as was the food and wine. Breakfast comprehensive and attentive service. Worth the stay. Many thanks to the cleaning staff, they did a great job.

The castle next door was terrific! (This is our 4th stay with the Pestana Group.) Breakfast was mediocre…overripe/underripe fruit etc. Terrible smell/toilet noises on 3rd night. Main room heater/fan was inoperable. Shower
head didn’t work even though we asked for assistance.

Reception staff was pleasant and friendly. we appreciated the bottle of wine as a welcome gift.
Food served at dinner was below par... a too full plate of not very warm \"Caramella\" soup, (not our favourite), a full plate of tasteless black linguine with few shrimps, scallops and peppers. Service was below par. We had a bottle of rose, our glasses were never refilled, but those of other guests were. The male staff member was not overly friendly (to us...) The large room was excellent with beautiful view of the surrounding areas.

Beautiful historic hotel

We had a very pleasant stay at this Pousada. The room was well appointed and the bed was the most comfortable I’ve ever slept on.
The breakfast was also superb.
The staff were all extremely helpful and knowledgeable. You can also walk around the ruins and fortifications next to the hotel. It is a very beautiful setting.

The only very minor negative was the shower fitting in the bathroom that is supposed to hold the shower head.
It was very loose meaning when you showered you had to hold the shower head in your hand rather than leave it in the wall holder otherwise the water pressure would cause it to wobble around which sprayed water all around the bathroom rather than onto the person showering.

Beautiful but in need of updating and bad food

The positives are this is a beautiful, historic building with great views and large rooms, the negatives are the service, especially in the restaurant, the food (the worst dinner we’ve had in Portugal, the fish was so overcook and had no sauce), the communal facilities (there’s a stunning courtyard, but it’s not used and it has 4 half dead orange trees and fake wisteria flowers, nothing else to make it nice) and the large bedrooms, which, although large and nice, need updating, especially the ugly bathrooms.

Palmela is a small, charming town with not much to do so our two night stay was just the perfect amount of time to be there.
Staying in a historic castle is a one of a kind experience. Our room was luxurious, the whole place is elegant and the view from the property is amazing. It takes you back in time. The staff was very friendly and the breakfast was delicious!

Room and areas of the hotel were chilly but it is their winter. It was very quiet. You could not tell there was other guests in the next room. Food was abundant and fantastic. Staff was very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend.

This was probably the highlight of our trip to Portugal. It was wonderful staying in the old monastery and touring through the castle. If you are not traveling by car it can be a bit of an adventure getting to the Pousada. We took the train from Campolide on Feftsgus. The fair was 4.65E. When you get off though your are not close to the Pousada. It would be better to take a bus from Lisbon (Orient). It is 4.50E. Takes about 15 minutes longer, but you are much closer to the castle. You can walk (it is steep) or grab a cab for about 3.50E.

Family Trip to the Lisbon Area - Loved the Hotel!

We had a really great stay at this hotel. For kids it was magical to be next to a castle. The views were incredible. The breakfast was delicious. Our shower wasn’t working when we arrived and it got fixed the next day while we were out. That impressed us too. Dinner options were limited for kids but we made the best of it. Only downside was that the beds were really hard and the coffee was bad at breakfast (also there was no in room coffee available).

Unfortunately we missed the Medical Festival

Our stay at the Pousada de Palmela was fabulous, however getting there was tricky!!! We would not recommend using the GPS when trying to reach the property, the roads in town are extremely narrow and hard to navigate. The staff was very friendly and the service was wonderful. Our one regret was having to leave the day before the Medical Festival!!!

Fun to stay in this castle perched high on a hill with pretty views! The hotel is technically in the former monastery attached to the castle, but grand nonetheless. Enjoyed exploring all the grounds, climbing to the castle’s keep, and heading to dinner along the water at a fishing village suggested by the concierge. Friendly front desk staff.

The breakfast was perfect. It is right next to the castle so it’s very easy to walk around and explore there. If you’re looking for a unique experience this is the place.

Great stay. Helpful and friendly staff. Corner Room 206 had great views in two directions from a fantastically high view point. Our visit co insided with a Wine & Jazz festival in the castle which was an added bonus. Food was lovely but not cheap eats. Really enjoyed our stay. If driving follow signs to the Pousada and drive up the cobbled Castle ramps ignore the yellow barrier that will be blocking the route.The car park is at the top.

Comfortable castle close to Lisbon

This was my second stay at this Castle -- the first was about 15 years ago. This Pousada is well-managed, comfortable, and has both an excellent restaurant for dinner, and serves a very good (and varied) breakfast.

The staff was very helpful when we wanted to visit Lisbon without driving into the city. The taxi ride from the Pousada to the train station costs about 15 Euro each way, but the train into the city (sete rios -- by the zoo, and close to a metro station) is only 8.5 Euro for two (ask at the desk for the blank ticket you can use at the train station). There is a train once an hour that goes into Lisbon -- leave the Pousada for the station at least 30 minutes ahead of the train's scheduled arrival if you use a taxi. Take a short trial drive to the station if you choose to leave your vehicle in the train's free and safe parking lot).

If you choose to take a taxi, plan on waiting at least 30 minutes at the train station for a cab's arrival -- and unless you speak Portuguese, call the Pousada and ask them to call a cab for you.

All in all, we had a most enjoyable experience.

An absolute must!

This is the most incredible place we have ever stayed. From the moment we arrived at Pousada Castelo de Palmela we were made to feel very welcome. We were given a corner room on the top floor, which had views over Lisbon, the Rio Tejo, the Arrábida Natural Park and the castle. No matter which way you looked, the views were breathtaking.

What made the stay extra special was the team of staff at Pousada Palmela. From Tiago at the check in desk to Artur in the bar, everyone we met treated us like family. We had planned to have dinner at the Pousada but wanted an authentic Portuguese meal, so Tiago suggested Retiro Azul in Palmela. He drove us, and introduced us to the owners, and we had an incredible meal. We had the Queijinho de Azeitao & Estaladico de alheira come maca to start (divine), the Lascas de bacalhau com broa (codfish) & Bife da vazia (veal steak) for mains (sublime) and finished with chocolate mouse and an apple pie crepe. Add in countless litres of local wine and it made for one unforgettable night.

The next morning we woke in time to catch the sunrise from the terrace. It was like a fairy tale. Words cannot describe the feeling of sitting on the terrace, enjoying a pastel de nata and a café con leche in the morning or a glass of moscatel at sunset - it must be experienced. We cannot recommend the Pousada Palmela enough! You will not regret it.

The town is charming and the annual wine-making festival during the weekend of our stay was an added bonus. The breakfast buffet was the best we've had the whole trip! Dinner in the hotel restaurant was convenient for the first couple of nights while still jet-lagged, and the food good and wholesome. We would have stayed longer, time permitting. Definitely be back when n Portugal again.

A lovely end to our Portugal holiday

We (2 adults, 2 children) stayed at the Pousada de Palmela for one night en-route from the Algarve to Lisbon airport on the last night of our holiday in Portugal. It was a lovely way to end our trip - the setting is stunning, the Pousada building itself is a charming, historic building, the wider collection of castle buildings were great to explore and the views were spectacular. We stayed in one of the spacious corner suites, with great views to the south and west providing us with both a spectacular sunset and sunrise.

We enjoyed dinner in the restaurant, with the kids well catered for, despite the grand surroundings.

We would definitely recommend staying here. It worked out perfectly for our stop before heading to the airport (about half an hours drive), but would be worth visiting anyway.
