Overall this hotel was amazing, the views were breathtaking, it was extremely clean and had lots of facilities. The people that work there were always polite and apart from one instance extremely attentive.

The only two negatives I would mention is, for such a big hotel there are only 3 check in/enquiry desks and generally just two staff on them meaning you often have to wait a good few minutes if you needed anything from them.

The second was the restaurant. On the first night I had an absolutely lovely steak, I enjoyed it that much I decided to have a meal there the next night. This time I ordered the lamb shank. The issue was it didn’t come as described on the menu, it came with mash instead of rissole potatoes as specified. The lamb shank was embedded in the mash and I really don’t like mask. I waiting to see the waiter again but didn’t. I ended up just eating the lamb on top after waiting a good while.

The waiter didn’t check on me at all even though I was literally the only person in the restaurant and I mean only person. By the time I did see him and call him over to get the bill it was a good 20 minutes later, meal hardly touched (see picture). At that point I wasn’t hungry anymore so didn’t raise it and he didn’t ask me how my meal was even though it was hardly toughed.

The hotel is also in a lovely location with lots of amenities close

The staff are friendly and helpfull. A special commendation to Khoo Min Jie for his outstanding services, he checked us in, gave us information brochures and other information about places to dine, and notify us when the room was ready. Most of all he went out of his way to help us when we contacted him even though he was already on leave.He presented Ascott well with his service and made us enjoyed our stay.

Great hotel! Grand and inviting lobby. The doorman was really friendly as were check in staff. The room was spacious as was the bathroom. The bed was comfy and the linen clean. The pool was very nice with great lookout especially during sunset. We enjoyed the breakfast with a good variety and tasty dishes, it was nicely laid out. They have coin laundry (purchase token at reception) which was very handy for us. Location was OK, we mostly caught grab to places so was fine.

IRRESPONSIBLE HOTEL MANAGEMENT.

Hotel does not pick up your calls especially on weekends, when it is the most time hotel guests will need help. I was on a business trip and I booked this hotel for a 1 night stay. 2 days before I am checking in, I had some changes to my flight schedule. I had to leave Penang in a morning flight so I thought staying there will be very inconvenient. I contacted Hotel.com to request for a cancellation and refund. They did not manage to contact the hotel probably it was in the night 9pm. BUT it is an international hotel? I called in personally the next morning and someone spoke to me. I related my concerns and issue about staying in the hotel and requested for a cancellation and goodwill refund, the hotel staff assured me that it can be done but needs HOTEL.com to contact them to verify officially. Okay, hotel.com tried several times to contact them in email and phone but no response. Finally 2 days later they came back to me with a rejection from Ascott. I was surprised because I was told that the room can be cancelled with refund the other day!!! I tried to call again on a weekday and spoke to the reservation manager, Yana. She took my contact and email promising to get back to me again on this. And 3 days later…. No response. This is the worst hotel service I ever experienced especially from a 5star hotel brand. There is a HUGE problem with the hotel management in Penang. The staff have a problem with listening. Asked me which app I used to book when I told her 30s ago….

This is the 3rd we are staying at the Ascott Gurney Penang. We have always liked the amenities of the Ascott, especially the in-room washer/dryer and spacious rooms. The cost to stay at this hotel is very expensive. I wish the price can be further improved, or allow us to earn points while paying so much money to stay here so that we can save money in our future stays. I have joined the Ascott Rewards program but the hotel staff refused to let me bank our points because we did not directly book our stay with the hotel website. That is a pity considering this is our 3rd stay and each time we stay for a week or so. Parking continues to be another discontent where the need to validate our parking ticket each time we leave the hotel, is not a good use of our time. We sometimes have to wait for the receptionists to attend to guest check-ins before they can validate our parking ticket (which only takes a few seconds). On the last night of our stay, the parking facility in the basement (where we usually park our vehicle) was not functioning so they shut down the basement parking. In refusal to drive up the spiral driveway up to the high-floor parking ramp, we have to pay RM50 to pay for valet parking at the front of the hotel. That was our biggest complaint for this stay.

This was the second time we stayed at the Ascott within a month. We were in Penang for over three weeks to celebrate the Chinese New Year with our family in Penang. We decided to stay here again on the same trip. We like the amenities offered by Ascott such as the in-room washer and dryer, spacious room layout and excellent staff service. We walked to Gurney Plaza shopping mall and avoided the headaches of finding parking in the crowded shopping mall garage. This is a great hotel and we will certainly stay here again in the future.

The staff was courteous and helpful. Their service was superb and friendly. Once we asked for extra towels and we forgot to disable the do-not-disturb switch. Then I suddenly realized that and looked out the peek hole, and was astonished to find the room service staff standing patiently waiting for me. I was very apologetic and very grateful for their dedication. The view from our room was excellent. The only setback from our experience was the parking: (1) we had to go to the reception to validate the parking pass every time we were leaving the parking garage. Sometimes there was a line at the reception and we had to wait for other guests to check in to the hotel before the staff could validate our parking pass. That wasn't a good way to get out of the garage, and a problem if you are on a time crunch. (2) If you park in the multistorey garage instead of the basement, you will have to drive up the multilevel spiral ramp untill you get to the top floor to park. You just go round and round nonstop until you reach the top. The spiral ramp is not very wide so we were worried about scratching our vehicle going up or down the ramp. In general, it was a pretty good hotel and we appreciated the space in our room and the washer/dryer that were inside the room. We would stay here again despite the parking inconvenience that was described above.
