We had a one night stay in this gorgeous hotel before our flight.
We got a great deal when we booked as it was just opening again after refurbishment.

The room was lovely and spacious. Ear plugs were provided as it sits under the flight path for Stansted.

Breakfast was the only meal we ate there and was ok (my wife won't eat cooked breakfast without hash browns, so she stuck to yoghurt and fruit)

It's a delightful hotel perfect for a stay before the airport which is a 5 minute drive away

Last time stayed in one of the rooms in the out building and was perfect.
Don’t think a room in the house is an upgrade.
Signal on tv awful had to turn it off
On a cold night was boiling hot and could not amend.
The rooms inside could do with being brought up to the standard of the outbuilding rooms

What a lovely hotel, restaurant and location. Excellent car parking for airport. We were really excited about the prospect of staying on our return and future visits to include car parking. However, after a sleepless night due to the noise from the planes every 5 minutes and other residents/restaurant customers, and bad tv signal we will not be staying again.

Hotel was excellent value. Staff friendly, clean room convenient parking. The only tiny thing, which didn’t really bother me but is typical of the lack of attention to detail that lets down British hospitality, was that the toilet seat was slightly broken. Really easy to fix, would just take the cleaner to notify maintenance. But, as I say, it really wasn’t a problem and our stay was very good.

Convenient location for the airport.

Friendly staff on reception on arrival and departure. However the room we were in was above the bar so we could hear music and doors slamming. Also the cleaner had appeared to spill cleaning fluid on the wooden floor which meant it was dangerously slippery. We had to wipe it up and put the shower mat over it to avoid falling over.

This hotel is just lovely. Beautifully decorated and the grounds are gorgeous. The bed was so comfy. Our bedroom and bathroom were huge and felt luxurious. Food in the restaurant was delicious for both dinner and breakfast. My only small gripe was that we did not have any openable windows in our room so it would have been nice to have aircon or at least a fan as it got a bit warm and it wasn't even that warm outside

I booked a single room which was basic but had everything I needed for a quick stopover. The hotel is on the flight path so expect to hear the planes!

The hotel is set in beautiful grounds with outside seating . Food was good, restaurant staff very friendly.

Just a tip (and nothing to do with the hotel) if you book a taxi at the airport from the only taxi supplier to the hotel and back , it’s going to cost best part of £50!

Average stay - but a parking ticket problem!!

Location is ideal for Stansted. It’s directly under the flight path for planes landing & taking off so you’re a light sleeper, I would avoid. We were aware of this prior so had no surprises.
Despite putting a ticket on the car provided by the hotel, we have ended up with a parking ticket!! So now we are contesting that. Seems like a problem that others have experienced also.
The rooms were quite outdated and in need of an upgrade but this was potentially reflected in the price. The rooms weren’t very clean, floor dirty + bathroom. As we were only staying for a short time because of our flight, it didn’t bother us that much.
Overall, it was an average stay but we wouldn’t stay again.

Outside from the room and staff the property is lovely. The one bright spot is the restaurant. Food was incredible and restaurant staff were fantastic!!!

An excellent place to stay as it’s close enough to London and Cambridge by car. On site parking is a benefit.
The only inconvenience is that it’s under the flight path for Stansted but the bedrooms are well insulated for sound and it’s not a disturbance unless one is enjoying the beautiful garden and water feature in the summer while dining al fresco!
I would definitely stay here again and give it a clear 4 out of 5 !

Hotel communal area was nice. Room was dated. Had to move the side tables to access plug sockets. Some plug sockets didn’t work. The kettle only turned on at a certain position.
Staff were friendly in the restaurant. Good food. Good location to get to stansted however we didn’t get much sleep because of the planes taking off every few minutes.

Nice hotel, but under the flight path

The hotel is lovely. However, Hotels.com have it filtering under swimming pool, it has two ponds, no swimming, whcih was a great shame.
It is also under the flight path to Stanstead so quite noisy with both flights and people vacating early to catch their flights.
However, the room was comfortable but as I staid over the hottest days, a fan in the wardrobe that could be used would have been a real bonus.
The food and service in the restaurant was excellent and I would recommend that.

Very nice room on ground floor. There is an outer door which does not reveal that rooms 7 and 8 are inside. The TV reception was very poor. Loved the shower. Very nice restaurant. Food needs improving given the price. Excellent grounds. All in all, apart from being under the Stansted flight path, very enjoyable stay. Will come again. One thing registering for free parking needs simplifying. Very confusing.

Lovely surroundings and a great restaurant...however, I wouldn't stay here again. The blind didnt work in the bedroom, so the room was constantly glowing with headlights from the constant flow of traffic. Also we had a broken bed which slowly got worse as the night went on. As we had to leave 3am, wasn't worth asking to move. We were told to email our complaint, but never heard back.

Room was just as advertised and had everything we needed - except hair conditioner. Easy and helpful check-in staff. Clean. The collection of buildings were absolutely stunningly cute and well-maintained, especially for the age, and nice explorable grounds. Not much open in the area or walkable past evening time. Quick cab ride to Stanstead.
Beds a bit on the short size, rooms could use fans in the summer. Opening the windows was an option but we were on the road side which was surprisingly noisy for most of the night, in addition to very loud planes overhead nearly every 5 minutes well past 11 pm. Nice place, but bring ear plugs or a white noise machine.

The rooms themselves are fine, check in was an easy process, ample car parking. Tea, coffee and biscuits provided, which was a nice touch.

I’ve only awarded the property 3 stars because is it located directly under the flight path of Stansted airport. I stayed in a room on the top floor, prior to an early morning flight, and it was so so noisy with regular planes flying overheard that I had trouble getting to sleep. Far from ideal when you need to be up at 3am!

From the U.S., I searched online for a hotel that dared to be different. I was totally happy with my decision to book at The Great Hallingbury Hotel. The staff were super nice, super accommodating, easy to converse with. The property has a wonderful, out in the country ambiance. The hotel was quite at night, in fact at all times.

WORST 2 NIGHTS EVER

Booked a 2 night stay here to accomodate myself and workforce whilst doing a job nearby.
Check in was great but once we enetered our rooms it was clear the bed and rooms were cold and damp!
To add to this, it was then we found there was no hot water to have showers, all 5 men then returned to reception to request a room change, We were told that there were no more rooms available with hot water.
after having a long day at work we decided it would be easier to brave a cold shower which was horrible, but hoped that this would be addressed the following day.
After tossing and turning all night with hardly any sleep because of the lack of heating and damp bedding.
The following day was again a long day on site and after returning to the hotel around 7pm we were then further dissapointed as the problems had not been rectified in our rooms. they did manage to move 3 of the guys but were told they would have to share rooms, but we had paid for 5 rooms. This again was very dissapointing but a couple of the lads agreed whilst the rest of us ahd to again take cold showers and sleep in our clothes.
The hotel in general is stunning and i have stayed here previously, but it seems the extra rooms they are supplying over in a different building were the problem.
We were offered no refund for the rooms we did not receive nor any apology for the problems we were encountering. The management here really need to get a grip. Hotels.com have since tried to help but have been ignored also! FUMING!

Quirky manor house Hotel. Nice room classed as a suite, but only high level skylights which really closes it in. Space much better suited to a family room.
Very nice restaurant, menu OK, food OK and fairly reasonably priced. If you don't like liw flying aircraft passing overhead every few minutes it's not for you. Overall it was very good value.

Beware dangerously hot shower - scalded me!! (Room 53 - left a note for management but had to leave for my flight)

Good:

Convenient location for airport.
Clean room.
Super comfy bed.
Free parking.
Welcoming staff.

Not so good:

WiFi did not work.
Shower is rain style and no shower cap so not ideal if you don't want wet hair (would be better with a handheld shower also).
TV needs re-tuneing

Exceptionally bad:

Shower takes 10 mins to come through warm.
After this the water is DANGEROUSLY HOT on what is supposed to be the coolest setting. The thermostat dial is plumbed in wrong so when you turn to cold this unleashed scalding hot water (no kidding it felt like a kettle) onto me, being a rain shower this is full body coverage, so I had to jump out the shower so quickly to prevent serious injury. Yes there is a 'cation very hot water' sticker but this underestimates the temperature, as no shower should be uncomfortably hot as the lowest temperature.

If you use the shower please, please be careful!!!!!

The not so Great Hallingbury Manor Hostile.

The GHMH was hugely disappointing. I arrived at the hotel to find the bar & restaurant closed - this was due to a renovation, but this was not communicated until I arrived and paid. I was accommodated in Room 50 which is located across the road in the lodgings. To cross to the accommodation involves crossing a poorly light road which has the potential for a fatal road accident. The rooms are said to have WiFi, but this was not available throughout the stay. After repeated visits to reception to enquire if this would be resolved I resigned myself to the fact that they didn’t care. Over the 3 nights the room was not serviced (Clean towels etc) or the tea tray replenished. Looks nice in pictures… but avoid.

You pay for what you get

I arrived at the hotel at around 8 pm after a very long drive. I parked in the Hotel car park which was round the back of the hotel and due to the works, there was no entrance from the back which required having to walk all the way around the property to the front with luggage and poorly lit conditions. During check-in, I was asked my registration plate and then told to go and put a parking ticket in the window of the car, which was the last thing I wanted to do as I was really tired. I couldn’t understand the reasoning for this if they asked my registration plate and had logged it on their system. It seems completely unnecessary and frustrating. I was given a room on the second floor, it was a single room. It was perfectly adequate, however, it was like a sauna when I entered the room. I endeavoured to turn off the radiator but that was broken and I was unable to leave the window open due to the amount of aircraft like directly overhead. I went down to the reception to explain that the radiator control was broken and was told that I would have to move room. This was again rather frustrating as I had unpacked. I was given a room on the ground floor I asked if it was possible to have a room on the first floor where I was staying but told that there were no single rooms available. It was hardly a busy time of year and I would’ve thought due to the inconvenience caused they could’ve provided me with a double room to make my life easier rather than having to carry all the luggage

We knew the hotel was under refurbishment when we booked so the restaurant would be closed, this wasn’t an issue for us as we were not arriving until 7pm and we had to check in at the airport at 4am.
What we didn’t expect was for there to be no hot water!
On arrival we wanted a shower and was told the water just needed to run through.
It was clear there was an issue so the young lady in reception called through to the manager. Apparently they had had a plumber out and the water tank had been emptied and refilled at 3pm. They expected water to be hot after a few hours. We tried the water again at 9.30 and it was still freezing.
As we had to be at the airport by 4am we got up extra early to grab a shower and the water was still freezing!
On checking out of the hotel, the young man explained that the water was broken for the whole side of hotel we were in and we would receive some sort of refund. Had we been alerted it was only our side of hotel, we would have requested or at the very least expected a move to different room
The hotel is now not responding to Expedia who we booked through. They also had my address and have not contacted.
Appalling service from the hotel. This hotel is in a prime position and would have been perfect for anyone wanting an overnight stay before a flight but give the service from management, this would be the last hotel I would recommend.
For the record, I am expecting a full refund and will not be letting the matter drop

Ok, but being renovated.

Reception is being revamped and not at all functional. The lodge room was also a bit basic, but functional. Will probably give this hotel a miss next time and try another. Also, under flight path!

The property was undergoing renovations but the room was boiling hot with no thermostat to turn radiator down/off. The bed was the worst I have encountered with springs poking out all over. We barely slept!

Beautiful place. Brilliant staff. Parking convenient and inexpensive. Property is Near airport but taxi was expensive. Next time will try to get airport accomodation for more convenience and will cost as mich if I get an early deal!
