I've given 4 stars overall because the hotel was as we expected. The interior was very old and dated and is in much need of an upgrade but we booked the hotel knowing this, and did so for its location (perfect for an event at The Piece Hall), knowing it would be dated.
The room was functional but could have been cleaner with dust and a bit of dirt in the less commonly used places. The bedding and bathroom were clean. Again, the bathroom is dated but functional with hot water and clean towels but don't expect a rainfall shower.
There's a kettle for tea and coffee making, which was a nicer touch.
There was no lift, which was fine by us but may not suit everyone.
Parking wasn't the easiest to find as the post code on the website took us to a different car park but we called reception and the staff gave directions to the right one, which was free.
All staff I encountered were helpful.
They did ask for the £100 deposit at reception, although I was only aware they might ask because of reviews I had read. The staff on reception seemed to expect people to turn up unaware of the deposit.

The hotel was was significantly overpriced for the standard offered. The room was very small for a double, it was difficult to get to one of the windows as there was not enough room to get round the bed. The standard of decor was poor in the room, damaged wall where something had clearly been removed and the wall covering not repaired. The carpets on the upper floors were filthy. The ground floor had been refurbished but was uninspiring. The bar staff seemed very inexperienced, not knowing how to serve basic drinks. The bar was poorly stocked and some people just gave up and went to their rooms to drink due to the absence of basic supplies (e.g. no white wine). People who had waited in the lobby for quite a while were told at 3 p.m. that their rooms were not ready. Reception was not manned until 3 p.m. on the dot so nobody was warned that their room might not be ready. In a good hotel the receptionist will allow people to check in early if the room is ready but this was not an option here even though they could see the number of people waiting. You got the impression that none of the staff had worked in a hotel before.

We stayed for one night as a couple, we had tickets to see a band at the Piece Hall. The location is next to the venue, the room itself was dated, but it was clean and comfortable and the staff were very friendly. Would stay again.

Good location close to the railway station and within walking distance of all amenities. Nice room, comfortable bed and tea and coffee making facilities. The shower was good and toiletries were provided but there wasn’t a mirror in the bathroom which made shaving a bit difficult but this may be due to the hotel undergoing a refurbishment. The breakfast was reasonably priced and there was plenty of it. We were on the third floor and there wasn’t a lift which wasn’t an issue but it could be for some. Overall a very enjoyable stay.

Pre booked and pre paid more than 4 months from date of travel. Not impressed when checking in, informed that an additional £100 needed to be authorized from my card which would be returned after room inspection on day of departure! Obviously no trust in the customer and I having staying in numerous hotels never experienced this before. Surely the hotel should have made this clear before a booking was taken. Later that evening, I discovered there was no heating in the room as the radiator was not working even though I was experiencing noisy pipes heating the rest of the hotel! Out for much of the following day, only returning late in day so didn't bring it to the hotels attention thinking they were not aware of the problem. However, on day of departure, when I had to request the receptionist to check my room in order to retrieve the extra £100 paid under protest, she was surprised I was in the room allocated. It seems to me there is a communication problem among staff to the detriment of the customer. The hotel is basic, a little tired, but fine. The real issue is that they demanded a 'deposit' of £100 per room in case of damage. This had not been mentioned before and, as I had booked five rooms for a group, they wanted £500 off me. They said I would get it back after the rooms were inspected but it's a lot of money to be expected to lend them for a few days.

Having to pay a refundable deposit of £100 per room. Although I booked and paid for two twin rooms, the deposit was requested when we arrived. I paid the deposit for one of the rooms, one of my travelling companions for the other, in cash and each of us signed for the payment. But when we left, two of my companions needed to catch a train but were t allowed to have their deposit returned until someone had gone and checked both rooms at the same time. The delay meant that they had to catch a later train which was unfortunate. But the beds were very comfortable and the staff in the main were very good.

Second visit for a concert, location right at the entrance to venue and town. Hotel rooms need urgent refurbishment. Bathroom awful , flooded and toilet in a position you could hardly sit on it. Room felt like a storage room with a tiny window and furniture was so dated. Bed was comfortable. Left as soon as possible.

I wouldn't recommend this hotel. Although the public rooms had been refurbished the bedroom was in a very dilapidated state and the toilet seat wasn't attached to the toilet. The heating couldn't be adjusted causing us to have very poor sleep. We couldn't have stayed there for more than one one night.

I’m a single female traveller and having my room number announced our loud in front of a reception full of men is pretty disconcerting, and all hotel reception staff should know this is a big no no. Room was very old fashioned and tired, bed cheap with buttons and springs sticking through, and no hairdryer, also a lot of room noise and noise from other guests. It was clean though.

However the service at reception was good and friendly staff. No free parking as advertised though. Like to support independent hotels wherever possible but left thinking they need to do a bit better

First impressions weren't great. Though the man at the desk was helpful in finding the off site car park, the toilets in reception were dirty, with litter on the floor, no toilet paper and washing up liquid instead of soap.

There was also no smoke alarm, just some wires hanging out of the ceiling.

And FYI, there's free car parking as advertised.

I’ve been staying in this hotel for around 20 years there have been several owners over that time. The new owners are renovating so there is still work going on although it did not disturb us. Only down side is you have to pay hot parking now used to be free if you were staying in the hotel. Over all a pleasant stay will probably stay here agsin
