International travellers, you should be aware that this hotel is five star by New Zealand standards, which is a much lower bar than many other places.

The room had a musty/moldy smell, mediocre amenities (e.g. hairdryer and toiletries) miserly coffee pods and a poor minibar. It was nicely decorated but missing things you’d expect from a modern hotel like adequate charging/power points.

Service was poor. I had booked the sauna prior to arriving. There was no guest compendium in the room so I called reception to ask what the go was and the person I spoke to appeared personally affronted I had even asked. He turned up at the door to say he was taking me there half an hour later, then did this with all the warmth of a gaoler taking a prisoner to a cell. The sauna itself was very tired.

When I returned to the room at night a fuse had blown and the living area and bathroom lights in the suite were not functional.

As I checked out later in the morning, I told reception (the same staff member) the issues I’d had with the smell in the room and non-functional lights. He said blankly “I’ll tell them.” No apology or offer to compensate.

I am not thrilled about paying NZD 650 per night to brush my teeth by phone torch light but even less thrilled about how I was treated like an ingrate for even mentioning it.

There are numerous other and better hotels in the same vicinity (Movenpick, DeBrett, M Social) and I would not stay here again nor recommend it to others.

Physical environment lovely.
Unfortunately the room had a very musty smell - either like flooded carpet or cigarette smoke that had been attempted to neutralise, but just made the room smell weird and unpleasant. Even when we woke up, we were still attuned to the bad smell. Such a shame as the location is great and the rest of the experience very good.

I’ve wanted to try this hotel for a long time and booked over a year ago for a special occasion.
The staff are lovely and helpful. The bed was very comfy. Hotel in great location. That was where the good stuff ended.

The room smelled very musty/moldy. Had to have the balcony door open for extended periods of time and room smelled if left shut up.

The hot water ran out during my shower the first morning. The shelf in the shower was not secured properly and couldn’t be used to place shampoo etc on.

The hot tub had broken and was under repair, which we weren’t told until we tried to use it.

If you are coming by car, don’t. It’s a nightmare. I got abused by the courier driver while trying to drop off luggage and get car put into valet. My husband had to go around the block multiple times.

The room seemed to be missing some of the elements you would expect of a 5 star hotel.

On another note- we were on the 8th floor. The lift only goes to 7th. We are fit, so didn’t worry us.

Not many amenities for a 5 star. Not worth the price tag.

The hotel was absolutely fabulous but we did have a couple of minor issues. The first morning that the room was made up they didn't replenish the tea and coffee. Also with you eco plan, towel rails would be helpful but the bathroom was beautiful and towel rails would ruin the look so most people would throw the towel on the floor 🤷 we did have a problem with the shower overflowing (507). If you use the rainfall head the drain can't manage the flow. The restaurant was amazing (best lamb I've ever had,). The receptionist was eager and enthusiastic which always is a good thing. They also didn't account for 3 people in the room, 2 teacups, 2 coffee cups, 2 wine glasses. There were 3 towels though. We would absolutely return because it had a really charming, old fashioned, classy feel overall ❤️

5 star hotel rated, but didn't feel 5 star. Room was on 8th floor, had to walk up from 7th floor (elevator doesn't go to top). Room was a bit on the small side and bathroom was cramped with no space for toiletries at all. our friends stayed on 6th floor with same booking - much larger bathroom. No tub, no pool, spa was broken. TV cast link to cell phone didn't work (staff said prior clients stole dingle from back of TV and couldn't be readily replaced). Dined in restaurant one night - Good menu and service.
Staff was Excellent! Helped with bag transfers, room services, valet car parking. They acknowledged our complaints and compensated monetarily with apologies. Stayed at an MGallery hotel in Adelaide that was over the top great, so had high expectations that weren't met.

Our recent stay at Fable Hotel Auckland was deeply disappointing and fell far short of the five-star standard it claims. While the rooms and restaurant were nicely decorated and clean, we arrived late after a delayed flight and were left locked outside for 30 minutes, despite ringing the buzzer, repeatedly calling reception, and even contacting Expedia. During this time, there were drug users or homeless people outside the hotel shouting at us, which made the situation feel unsafe and very distressing. When a staff member finally appeared to let us in, it looked as though he had just been asleep. There was no concierge available to help with our bags. Breakfast was chaotic and inconsistent — one morning we were given a very limited buffet, and another we were allowed to order from the à la carte menu without explanation. Complimentary bottled water was missing from the room, and when we asked for it, we were told to drink tap water from the bathroom unless we specifically requested bottles. The gym was extremely poor, with just a single bike and a small weights bench crammed into a tiny space that felt like a cupboard. Overall, this hotel did not provide the level of service, safety, or facilities that a five-star property should deliver.

The hotel felt quite dated and worn around the edges, and my room smelt very strange although I was very appreciative of the upgrade and space that I had. There were some good amenities including a sauna, but I didn't manage to take advantage of this.

Beatiful little hotel in a central location

The Fable is a beautiful hotel at an excellent location. I love the decor although our room was very small; there wasn’t much room to move around. It’s close to shopping, dining and the ferry terminal. Outside the hotel is a bit of a letdown as there’s a few homeless people camped on the footpath. Our room was always thoroughly and quickly serviced in the morning while we’re at breakfast. Service was very good overall although staff at the Cooke’s restaurant at times seemed unsure of what they’re doing.

Disappointing given such excellent reviews. Junior suite had an over furnished living room and very poor storage (no drawers for socks and jocks etc) Shower waste overflowed and had to keep lifting the grate tile, but water pressure was excellent . Spa was out of order for the entire stay.
Room a bit tired. Staff did their job. Positives were location and quietness of our room.

Standards have slipped at The Fable who, by the way, are still advertising 24-hour room service which actually ends before 9 pm (who knows what happened to their overnight menu; we were lucky to get the restaurant's leftover desserts). Excited by an upgrade to the junior suite, we were disappointed enough by worn upholstery, grubby shower, suspect aircon, & broken bathroom extractor fan to request a downgrade. Luxury king was a much nicer experience but, again, the cleaning team had been neglecting shower floor and corners for some time, ugh. The jacuzzi was broken, with edging peeling away from the seats. Some creative soul had stashed multiple lifted tiles decoratively in a corner. Be prepared to try reception two or three times to get an answer :( Hopefully this is unique to Auckland and other Fable properties remain a unique & glamorous treat.

The upside was it was close to walk to everything (spark arena, viaduct, restaurants, ect).

Upon check in we were told our room was on the 8th floor but the elevator only went to the 7th so we would have to carry our luggage up the last floor. No offer of help was made and it took 3 trips to get our bags to our room. There was no mention that our room came with free breakfast and a $20 beverage/food credit. I had to ask to have our bill changed to reflect the credit.

The property itself was excellent, the room was very clean, and the location excellent. The concierge, Mark, was fantastic, and he is the only reason we continued our stay. The staff at the front desk were the worst we have ever dealt with. While checking in, we asked the clerk at least 8 times to speak up as we could not hear her; she became frustrated and refused to speak up. We arrived early and our room was not ready which we expected. They have an 11am checkout; we asked for an 11:30am checkout; she said she could not accommodate our request. She told us she would call us when the room was ready; we never received a call. AFTER our assigned check-in time, we went back to see if our room was ready. We asked to speak to the other desk clerk hoping to have more productive communication. He gave us a room; we asked him if was identical to the room we had reserved; he assured us it was. The concierge, Mark, took us to the room. The room was two single beds; we had reserved and paid for a king bed! At that point we wanted to go to another hotel. Mark called the front desk and with minutes had us in a lovely room. Since we did not get a room until 30 minutes after check-in time, we asked for a 30 minute extension on checkout and were told we could checkout at 11:30am. The next morning, the same desk clerk from the day before called us because we had not checked out at 11am. This hotel is rated 5 star; in many aspects it is except for the front desk, not a pleasant experience.

The hotel is located in the CBD and is located near quality shops and restaurants. We enjoyed an outstanding fish dinner and a couple great breakfasts. The rooms are well appointed and quiet. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They offered suggestions on things to do in the area and day trips. We would stay there again.

Bitter Sweet Stay

Beautiful luxury boutique hotel, however our stay was bitter sweet. We enjoyed the restaurant & we were in the Duchess Suite on level 7 which was just gorgeous, however we stayed at Fable for a relaxing & unwinding few nights only to be directly above/next to the roof top night club next door. The music was booming & so loud along with clubbers until 2.30am. I called down to reception around midnight only to be told ‘oh what music’ & I’ll get back to you! It’s quite obvious that they would know! Then we were awoken early with loud humming noise & clunking only to realize that the house staff service lift was right next to us. This meant no sleeping in as they start early to do their jobs, so overall a very disappointing stay. I’m also an Accor member then to be told I couldn’t use my card to get reward points in the restaurant as I booked through a third party. Usually stay at M Social as we visit Auckland a couple of times a year for a getaway from Australia, so as lovely as this hotel is, I would only stay again if I could be guaranteed a very quiet room & not just get an ‘I’m sorry’ about the noise. I had asked to speak to a manager on duty after the first night, however there was no manager there on a Sunday.

The first room had a bad smell which we were then quickly moved to a new room. The house keeping missed a few things but the stay was fine. Access to the sauna was limited by appointment, but then when we asked to use it, were told it needed to be turned on to heat up. The gym was very small without air conditioning, towels, or water. Location was good.

The property is in a very central location and was reasonably priced. The hotel and room was clean.

We had a room on the first floor and all the windows were blocked out and looked into the hotel. The room was also very warm and the air con didn’t seem to work. The bathroom door didn’t shut properly or lock which was annoying, but this was by design not an error. The safe didn’t lock.

I only realised it was an Expedia VIP access property after checking out as we received no benefits when staying here.

The staff were not particularly friendly, except for one of the concierge who was nice.

We asked to check-in early after arriving on a red eye flight at 11am, the receptionist told us he would give us a call when our room was ready and we never got a call, so checked in at 2pm (the normal check-in time).

We were not made aware of any facilities and only learned later that the hotel had a gym and spa.

Not a terrible hotel by any means, but certainly not 5 star and should not be considered a VIP access property.
