I rather think the Shakespeare hotel is relying on the building having been designated to be of historical interest.
Yes, the staircase, as seen in the description of the hotel, is lovely, well would be if it was varnished once in a while, the carpet is worn and very grubby.
Our room should have been spectacular, having twin aspects, but only one out of 3 windows could be seen through, due to broken (not recently I would suggest) blinds.
We could not keep the sash windows open as the bolts to enable this, were bent and unusable.
The wash hand basin had an impressive crack in it.
On check in. I was told a 300$NZ, bond (larger than most) would be held on my card against my damaging the room during my stay.
Obviously I took photographs and spoke to the man behind the bar of the very busy pub,(there is no reception). He tried to persuade me it was because the building was old and repairs difficult to facilitate and took time to fix. I pointed out that this was damage, buy not MY damage.
The bar and restaurant were both extremely busy during our stay, so I couldn't help wonder why the hotel part was so run down.
It was very local, close to the harbour and the Intercity buses.

The location was great. The hotel was basic. Please keep in mind there is no proper front desk at this hotel. They might be able to store your luggage at 11:30am when the bar opens but besides that it’s strict 2pm check in. The staff were nice and did their best to help. I landed early and had to carry luggage around before check in.

The staff was accommodating during check in time but I was disappointed with the rooms I was not expecting that it would look like that. No A/C only fan, room smells dusty I can feel like my asthma will triggered that's why I checked out after an hour of stay and booked for another hotel accomodation. I'm sorry the room is not recommendable.

No hair dryer.
I didn’t have right outlet converter. They did lend me one!!!

While the staff were nice and very helpful , they were battling a building that is old, worn out, and dirty. I have a video of me opening my door with a credit card slipped into the gaping space in the door jamb. Not using the key! The air conditioner was always dripping on the bed and floor and soaked everything which is why it smelled like a swamp. The coffee pot has mold all inside it. Yuck. Cockroaches in bathroom. No lift up 3 flights. Location is fine but this is an old and running brewery pub downstairs. Smells like it. Keep the air conditioner off, open the windows and spray for bugs if you stay here. No paid parking either. Price was great though but we still left early. Not for normal travelers.

Room was on 3rd floor and as this hotel is very old there wasn’t a lift and had to climb the stairs every single time, staff was helpful with carrying luggage’s all the way up and down bless them. Very annoying to back and forth with stairs specially when your room is at level three. I was exhausted.

This historic tavern is well-preserved and well run.
My partner & I stayed in-house but had our meals in the bar downstairs and enjoyed the boutique beer/cider.
The atmosphere is relaxing & the meals well-presented and very enjoyable. The staff were very welcoming and helpful with any enquiries. The ladies toilet was the only disappointment: it is in dire need of a makeover as it was pretty old, messy & needing some repairs in the walls, etc.

I emailed support twice asking about check in and never heard back. We were not aware that the whole hotel would be shutdown with check in being at 2pm. I emailed asking before our stay if we could check in before 2, if we knew this was not possible we would have stayed elsewhere. We ended up missing our booked tours on Waiheke Island which was a shame.

This is a very unpleasant experience of my life. We booked Rayland through Expedia today and when we arrived to hr motel they said they don’t have the bookings and there is no rooms available. We then spoke to customer service at Expedia and they couldn’t resolve that issue and then we paid double the amount to book the Shakespeare hotel for our stay.

THIS IS MY WORST EXPERIENCE EVER !!!!

The rooms are unclean, aircon isn’t working. The lights are not working, there is no hot water in the shower. The toilet have poo stain on the toilet which wasn’t cleaned before we came in.

There is no phone to call the staff members, I have all the photos if you need.

My family/friends have been using Expedia for all the bookings but I am going to recommend to stop promoting Expedia and booking through you because it was such a pathetic experience. NEVER BOOKING THROUGH EXPEDIA EVER AGAIN !!!

Auckland was the last leg of our trip and this was the worst hotel we stayed. Our room was more like an attic and I hit my head against low beams multiple times. The room was not completely cleaned, and the carpet must be as old as the bar.

I had read the reviews before booking, so I was aware of what I might be in for. However, I found the check in quite helpful – there was an issue in the bathroom which staff apologised profusely for and as they were booked out he would have preferred to give me another room, but this understandably wasn’t possible. I arrived quite late, but this wasn’t an issue. It was conveniently located to my workshop and the room was lovely enough for the price. Unfortunately the shower was quite dirty but the room was nice and clean. The only other issue was a loud, drunk person outside in the hallway, but this wasn’t the hotels fault and thankfully it didn’t go on for too long. ☺️

There is no lift. We were in third floor, 4th including the pub below. We were climbing 67 steps twice a day. Not recommended if you have a big luggage. We stayed there for 3 nights. Noisy. Building was shaking when a bus passing by. Unhygienic to obtain a water from the toilet basin to make a hot drink. That’s what you get in the room. Mould on the bathroom and smell of urine, looks like it has not been cleaned and vacuumed for months. Nobody cleaned the room for first day. We spoke to the manager/ the staff who served us during check in and he said it will be only cleaned after the second night. Nobody came to clean at all. So we used the wet damp towel for 3 days. Broken light shade cover on the hallway exposing the light bulb. Small room, It’s a shame because the building looks nice outside.

It is a great concept Brewery, Restaurant and Hotel. It is centrally located and can walk to alot ie: Bay Harbor,Museums, Sky tower, food, and public transit options.

They do not have a front desk. So don't get in earlier than said check in.

The room I was is could use an upgrade. But it had what I needed a bed and shower. And when I asked for a hair dryer I forgot mine. They let me borrow one.

G.M was rude and they promise to return our $300.00 bond the next morning but didn't. We rang to follow-up and were told, 'sorry our G.M is off today'. Very disappointing. A hell of a palaver trying to get into the room. Required ID - but only a passport or NZ Drivers Licence - of which I had neither on me.
Asked for $300 deposit (after we had paid for the stay) promising to refund this if it wasn't needed. 2 weeks later, after emailing the hotel, they said 'oh thanks for the reminder'. Very poor. How many folk don't 'remind' them?
Room very pokey.
Parking was $40/day. Not $30 as advertised.
Not going back.

So, it is an older property in a building with great character. A little challenge to find in that the Pub is obvious but not so obvious is the hotel above the pub. No elevator. Small rooms that will need some attention over time. Great location in central downtown. Fit all the things we needed.

Staff and service were super friendly and accommodating. Having the pub on the bottom floor was so convenient and they offered guests a discount on pub food and drink which was awesome as the pub food was super good 😊 Unfortunately no elevator which I can see being an issue for older visitors or those with a lot of luggage, but it was fine for us. We honestly did not mind the 4 floor walk up to our room every night. The building is old, but that adds to the charm and they provided us with plenty of blankets and a space heater to help with the Auckland winter. Had to keep the bathroom window open a crack to help with ventilation but after an hour or two it was fine to be shut. The hotel as a whole is super conveniently located and we could walk to anything located within the city center area, or just take the short walk to a bus/train stop(s) close by. From our room we could hear the regular city/street noises, but nothing too loud to keep us awake, and I'm a pretty light sleeper, so it doesn't take much to wake me up.

The location is good and it's nice having a bar downstairs where you can grab a drink before calling it a night, but the room was definitely lacking. The room was small with a small window with no real view. The toilet was gross, and after taking a shower the condensation accumulated on the bathroom ceiling and dripped down onto me. Opening the bathroom window did nothing, since it was humid outside too. My allergies went crazy during my visit, so I'm sure the room had dust and/or mold hanging around.

We booked this hotel specifically because it was a heritage builiding / there was not elevator but we were told our room was on the 2nd floor - it was on the 4th / manager refused to call a shuttle for us - he said he'd call a taxi but not a shuttle ($140 vs $40). We walked down the street to IBIS and they gladly called a shuttle and made a reservation / comfy bed - but besides that, a hard no for us

The room was quite small with a tiny bathroom but the bed was comfortable and the location was perfect. Ideal for our single night's stay to see a show at the Aotea Centre. Two things would have improved our stay - some teaspoons to stir our hot drinks and somewhere to hang the towels - perhaps a rail on the back of the bathroom door.

The location is great for walking to the ferry (for trips to Waiheke, Rangitoto, etc), commercial bay building (fantastic food court - really!), restaurants/cafes/coffee, bus lines, etc. Staff was so friendly and helpful - Rosa is fantastic! It's a 3 star hotel so the mattress was on the firm side and sheets were 250 thread count or so, but everything was clean and organized. Please note: there is construction all over the CBD. You're going to hear folks using power tools everyday

If you like a charming, historical, old fashion little boutique hotel with a glorious past and a very good pub and restaurant, this is the right place! Not to mention the amazing and super convenient location!
The rooms, however, are very small and definitely old fashioned: but this is part of the charm.
Not recommended to people who have issues climbing the stairs (there is no lift).

This place is a dump. The beds are uncomfortable, the rooms are very small and dirty, the entire hotel is falling apart. It looked like nothing had been cleaned, ever. The showers are covered in mold or dust. There’s some giant hole in the wall above the bed and opened the entire room to an insane amount of dust. The staff appeared nice initially but then misled us on parking. We ended up paying nearly $200 NZ for two days of parking and the staff did nothing to help us sort out the misunderstanding (on their part). It was very hard to come and go from the hotel. And climbing up 3 flights of stairs for my older mother was very challenging. The pictures make this place look nicer than it is. Probably the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had. For $198 NZ, you might as well stay across the street at an established hotel. We watched them eat breakfast and were insanely jealous and embarrassed to be seen in this establishment. Also, did I mention the staff lied to us about parking? Terrible experience. Unfortunate way to start our trip.

I had high expectations of this famous establishment but was disappointed with the room. It was old and tired with the curtains hanging down and generally run down. The shower was dirty and the window didn’t close properly. All in all a place I won’t recommend or return to. The value for money was poor. The IBIS across the road was $40 cheaper. Not good.

Nostalgic, historical building. While the room was very basic, it was clean and met my needs. The location is very central and convenient. The restaurant has great food, though the floor and bar staff seemed to be struggling to keep up with things and gave mixed messages about ordering drinks/food. Not sure if that was due to lack of staff and being under pressure or not. The front reception person was very warm and welcoming and carried my suitcase up the stairs. That saved me as I would have struggled. It was tough getting down from the top floor with my luggage. Pricey regarding the room but then the location made up for that. Loved the bar décor and exterior design. Not staffed in the morning for checkout, so you leave the key in the drop box. So you can't sit inside after checkout if you are waiting for a lift but there are seats across the road. Convenient to the airport bus a few blocks away and to shops such as supermarkets (one across the road).

Not good enough at all. Room was putrid, hotel manager accepted our refund request on the spot and now is declining it! Absolutely appalled… we did not use the room and if he had told us we couldn’t refund it then we would have accepted that, however the hotel manager accepted the request and spoke to Expedia on the phone in front of us. This is disturbing and weird as we have had confirmation from both the hotel manager FACE TO FACE that he would accept it. Now is declining that we are out of town. Absolutely terrible service. Very angry about this.

Loved how it right near queen st. Easy to walk to alot of things and if not, uber was the way to go. Wasn't super clean but wasn't super dirty either

Staff were friendly and helpful but overall conditions were well below par, e.g rubbish outside our room not moved for 24 hours; curtains hanging off rails; bedside lights not working (although this was rectified once altered to); no cups/spoons in room; loose shower fittings.

Location is the only thing going for this place. Check in was painful and slow, the guy didn't seem to know what he was doing. The room was tiny and dilapidated, hairs on the bathroom floor and marks on the bedsheets and walls. The carpets were worn and so old looking that Shakespeare himself could have layed them and I'm not sure when they last threatened them with a vacuum cleaner but definitely hadn't been done recently. You might of gathered that we won't be staying there again.

Terrible, we left immediately and stayed somewhere else. It looks NOTHING like the pictures, the room was supposed to be a double but was a single bed. The bed was not cleaned and had dark brown stains all over it. The room smelled like urine and it was clear it had not been cleaned at all. No lock on the door. And even though we pre-paid $160, they charged us $330 to leave the property which I will expect back from Expedia. Absolute disgrace, this is a place for emergency housing, it is not a hotel.
