The room was large & comfortable, the staff was friendly & the breakfast excellent. However the shower room was moldy and the water was lukewarm. The building is generally frayed around the edges, but the big negative was the shower.

We stayed here in late March and really enjoyed it. We had a Traditional Japanese room with a futon for each of us (wife and I and our two kids) on a tatami floor in the two bedrooms. The room wasn’t enormous, but as long as we kept stuff tidy we had enough room for our baggage. Breakfast was a buffet-style and again, Japanese style with several staff making hot food from 7-915 am. The 6th floor public bath was a new experience for us (yes- fully nude) but I have to say after a long day of sightseeing and figuring out the metro system it was such a relief to have a good soak and sauna. They provide slippers for moving about in the room and up to the bath, as well as clean robes each day unless you indicate otherwise. We were also surprised to get razors and toothbrushes- wow! It is only about 6 blocks from Ginza station down the hill, Yushima station is a little further away but not too far to walk. Ueno park and Ueno station are two stops away on the Ginza line.

Very cool traditional design and extremely helpful staff. Breakfast was included (also traditional) and was very enjoyable. The only downside is that the doorways and fixtures were all quite low. Watch your head if you are close to or over 6 feet tall.

Great value for the hotel - we stayed for 4 days. Location was close to Akihabara and supermarkets. The lack of space / modern-ness of the sink and washing area was made up by an excellent onsen experience. Traditional breakfast in the morning was a great way to start our day!

The toilet room was very small and the windows in the main and bedroom were not well insulated and let the wind through. The AC was quite old and noisy. The rooms were very beautiful and the tatami mats in a good condition. They cleaned our room even though we didn't request it, and you have to hand your room key to the staff when you leave the property during your stay.

We were a family of four with kids 9 and 4. We had to adjust the living area to accommodate our needs better (2 suitcases and a car seat), but once that was done, it was fine (we moved the table against the wall and had just 2 sides for seating). Our room had a pond/fountain nested into the corner, which we didn't use and would've have simply preferred it to be extra space. We did enjoy our personal soaking tub, but it drained while soaking, despite having the plug in. It does have elevators, but the doors shut quickly, so be careful. While we enjoyed its close proximity to Akihabara, it is on a graded street, so you'll have to walk uphill when returning. The staff was very friendly and we enjoyed the daily breakfast and its variety of options. Overall, it was an enjoyable stay that felt like you were being hosted by a local family. It's probably a bit too small for a family with older kids, but with our smaller kids, it worked out fine. Thanks!

Great little old style Ryokan with Onsen (Sento) and men's Sauna. A bit dated, but that makes it charming. The rooms are good size compared to a typical biz hotel in the city. Nice big area for bathtub/shower in your room. The onsen are pretty basic but nice. The outdoor bath was very enjoyable for me.
Unfortunately the location is not really by much local transportation (trains). A couple conbini not terribly far away. But right around the corner is a full grocery store (Summit - サミットスト). The grocery had all kind of wonderfully prepared food as well. So I could use the microwave at the hotel. I also got McDonalds delivered in like 13 minutes one night.
Staff had good to great English, and we got everything figured out, even with my lack of/or lazy Japanese. Super friendly and helpful, every time. I shipped my luggage with delay to my next hotel. Coin laundry on site but I didn't use it. Outdoor patio on the 6th floor.

This is an older but clean hotel with a breakfast buffet offering western and Japanese options. The room I stayed in was a decent sized traditional tatami room with a small couch and coffee table. There are separate rooms for shower and tiled bath, toilet (super tiny) and sink (actually part of entrance before the main room). Can hang clothes near entrance and inside room. Looks to be popular with European guests. There is a bath facility on the top floor with a small outdoor bath, lounge area and a terrace.

We liked the location, the Japanes style room and bathrobes. The breakfast and roof tub public bath were good to have. What we didn't like were the dirty looking bathtub in our room, translucent bathroom door (lack of privacy), and the dirty carpet in the hallway.

Hotel Edoya is a charming and old style hotel. My room was larger than some of the other hotels I have stayed in Tokyo at a comparable price with added amenities. There is a sento on the top floor, a rooftop terrace and coffee, tea and daily newspapers is offered in the lobby. Breakfast was included and was a nice way to start the day. The staff were very friendly and always welcomed you back after a day out. The location between Akihabara and Ueno is excellent. I would highly recommend this hotel to everyone. Its very traditional Japanese feel but after awhile, you notice the moderness beyond the traditional exterior. The room is separated into bathing area, toilet area and main sleeping area. In the bathing area, it's a simple shower with a deep soaking area. The shampoo and soap are provided in packets. The futon is very comfortable. There are green tea packets to welcome you.
Overall, its very well equipped and comfortable stay.
Note the owners do not speak much English so they may appear unfriendly.
There is an onsen on top and it is available to hotel guests.
The location of the hotel is on the mid of a hill so be prepared to climb.
The breakfast is traditional Japanese style and the food is good.

I was offered a room on the 5th floor. The ceiling above the door was broken. And the wall next to the door was taped. It looked like water damage or no maintenance. Jammed room door. Vibration and machine noise inside the room. I asked immediately for a room change. I was told it’s an old hotel - finally got another room after some discussion.

古き良き旅館でした。サウナと大浴場があるのが良かった。部屋風呂は古いのでカビ等あって水もとまりにくい。でも日本の良さがでていて外国人には良いと思います。神経質な日本人には向いてないかも。坂がきついところにあるのでお年寄りは不便かも。久しぶりに旅館に泊まった感じでした。

館内は綺麗で、他の口コミにあった不具合は改善されているようです（エレベーターは新しく大浴場も新しく綺麗でした。）３泊しましたが、客室内は暖色系の照明で統一され、非常に居心地の良い落ち着いた空間です。清掃やアメニティも毎日取り替えられ、非常に清潔ある状態に保たれていました。室内の冷蔵庫やトイレ、内風呂はさすがに古いものでしたが、昭和懐古な建物と相まって落ち着いて寛ぐ事が出来ました。コスパも非常に良かったので、全く問題有りませんでした。

Quite reasonable price and equipments are good enough for solo traveling.
The building itself is very old and at first you might care about the smell from washbasin drainage and sofa, but you get accustomed to them overnight. They are trying to renovate and update the equipments.
