I stayed here for just one night and honestly wished I had booked a longer stay to fully enjoy the hotel. Yamatoya Honten offers a true ryokan experience with traditional Japanese-style rooms (tatami mats, futon bedding) right in the heart of Osaka.

Location: Absolutely unbeatable. It's literally across the street from the Dotonbori canal and walking distance to all the action—restaurants, shopping, and the famous Glico sign . Kuromon Market is also just a few minutes away .

Room: The Japanese-style room was spacious, comfortable, and beautifully traditional. It was a lovely retreat from the busy streets outside.

Amenities: The hotel has a public bath/onsen and sauna, which I unfortunately didn't get to try because my stay was too short .

Staff: Friendly and welcoming. They even offer welcome welcome drinks upon arrival, which was a nice touch .

If you want to experience a traditional ryokan but still be in the middle of the Dotonbori excitement, this is the perfect choice. Just book more than one night—you'll want the extra time to relax in the bath and soak in the atmosphere!

We had such a good experience staying at this traditional ryokan in Osaka, right in the heart of the busy Dotonbori area. The location honestly couldn’t be more convenient, everything was just steps away, from food spots to shopping and late-night strolls.

Sleeping on futons laid out on tatami mats was surprisingly comfortable and such a memorable experience for us and the kids.

The only downside was that because it’s right in the middle of such a lively area, it could get a bit noisy at night, especially with live music nearby.

Overall though, it was a fantastic stay. For the experience and unbeatable location, definitely recommend it!

We really enjoyed our stay at Yamatoya Honten Ryokan during our trip to Osaka. The room was much more spacious than the usual hotel rooms in Japan, which was great for opening luggage and relaxing after long days of sightseeing. Everything was very clean and well kept, including the bathroom and common areas.

The service was excellent — staff were warm, polite, and helpful, even with tourist questions like directions and nearby attractions. Check-in was smooth, and we felt very welcome throughout our stay.

The location is also very convenient for tourists, with easy access to shopping areas, restaurants, and public transport, yet the ryokan itself was quiet and comfortable at night. Overall, it was a great mix of traditional ryokan experience and modern comfort. Would recommend to anyone visiting Osaka.

The staff were very courteous and spoke English very well. They laid the futons out for us while we were out, and I'm not sure if it's part of the room cleaning, that we never put the sign out for, but they never picked the futons back up. Not a big deal, We didn't spend too much time in the room anyway. We weren't able to check out the bath house or sauna house as the hotel is right across the street from Dotonbori street and we spent every day walking around Osaka.

Location great, staff friendly... other than that.. HORRIBLE. Incredibly uncomfortable, AC doesn't work right, towels are TINY and paper thin. No coffee, no tea, no bathmat, no nothing. Everything is old and bad. They seem to go out of their way to NOT do basic things that all over hotels do.

Please know I don't like leaving bad reviews, but they just don't seem to care.

The location is perfect. It is walkable and around less than 10 min walking distance to the subway station. The staffs are kind and I enjoyed their big bath room. You need to prepare the charger as most of outlets only have two poles. Drinking water provided is not sufficient for three people. The room can contain 4 to 5 people for a family with up to 2 to 3 kids. We can see people walking on the street from the window. It is a memorable place.

I liked how close it was to everything although I think I'd like something a little farther away next time. I had a view of Dontonburi market from my window and the traditonal breakfast food was decent but def cheaper to go somewhere else but is convenient since its right on the property. Staff was great but there was one night where the elevator didnt work and of course I was on the 5th floor and the onsen looked sad and not kept up well. They put community brushes in there which i think is disgusting and it just didnt feel clean in there. The room itself was great though and sleeping in the futon was comfortable.

If you only have a few days to visit Osaka, this location is the most convenient option. The front desk is open 24 hours, staffed by kind and polite employees who speak English. I noticed that most guests are local Japanese, with not many foreign tourists. I recommend this place if you want to experience traditional tatami-style accommodations and a public bath, reflective of Japanese living.

Wonderful experience! The staff was capable and helpful. The food was delicious. And you can’t beat how close the hotel is to Donguri Street and the Glico Man. One small thing is that the door directly to the women’s bath was somewhat broken and hard to open and close. Other than that it’s a great place for a traditional Japanese experience!

Central Osaka Convenience

The Yamatoya Honten is ideally located in central Osaka to make it easy to walk to nearby Dotonbori for food or Denden town to do some shopping.

The hotel itself is in a more traditional Japanese style and a great experience for it. (Though you don't lack any modern amenities - there is air conditioning for example!)

The hotel staff were very helpful and spoke quite a bit of English, which was helpful since my Japanese is still quite basic.

The Yamatoya accepts luggage deliveries and my suitcase was waiting for me in my room when I arrived, which was a really nice touch. The front desk staff also helped me book my bag through to my next hotel.

The room had enough space for me and sleeping on the traditional futon bed was quite comfortable.

I loved the people in this ryokan, just please do something about the smell and windows cleanliness, I understand the property is very traditional but, a little improvement on the general state would be fantastic, the first floor is all impregnated with cigarette smell due to the smoke room, and the upper floors smelled like rust and fish.

Not a good traditional Ryokan experience

I was looking forward to staying in a traditional Japanese inn as described in previous reviews and YouTube but was disappointed on all counts. There was no personal greeting or attendant assigned to us, no tea on arrival. Kaiseki dinner was not served in our room. Kaiseki dinner items did not match the description on menu & not great. Both meals were in the dining room. Breakfast choices were either Japanese or Western but had to be ordered before 8pm the night before. Western breakfast was mediocre-no choice of eggs. The takoyaki experience was a joke. We were given an electric griddle,plain batter, frozen shrimp & octopus with directions but no pickled red ginger or green onions provided as described. We cooked our own without help. Kimonos were in room but no directions. Two thin towels per person & charge 300 yen for ice or extra towels. All of the other 6 Japan hotels we stayed in also had a public bath or onsen so no need to stay in a Ryokan like this one for that experience. Don't stay here if you are hoping for a traditional Japanese inn. It's basically a 2 star hotel with futons to sleep on. We stayed extra day(s) for this Ryokan experience. It cost us more than the regular hotels but was my least favorite Japan hotel. One lady on staff was helpful with directions on how to catch the airport bus. Location was good for Dontonburi.

The location is great! Close to all the food, train station, overall it’s an OK place to stay, I wish the check out was least 11 am , 10 am is a bit too early. It definitely needs an upgrade, at least with bathrooms, we had a very nice gentleman come to our room and offer to set up the floor mattresses, but had done it already, super easy. I think that it would be helpful to have directions in place on how to set the bedding up. Other than that, an okay place to stay.

The Japanese breakfast was not as good as we had in two other ryokans we stayed at on this visit to Japan. The breakfast room was rather drab and did not seem to reflect the Japanese culture as I expected, though the staff was very attentive, especially a middle age man who recently was a navy retiree. He was quite accommodating and dignified.

This place was amazing. The service was the best I’ve received at any hotel. Reception was very friendly and they made helpful suggestions for local entertainment and dining. They even went out of their way to help us navigate to our location. It was located in the perfect part of Osaka which made getting to each of our destinations effortless. I would highly recommend this accommodation to anyone (especially English speakers) and hope to return again one day if I get the opportunity.

We only passed through Osaka for one night en-route to Okinawa so wanted to stay in the heart of the city to make the most of it. This ryokan fit the bill perfectly! A ‘traditional’ style hotel with tatami rooms and sleeping on futons, it’s not the most luxurious hotel but definitely has character and comfort and in the best location within short walking distance of all the excitement of Namba and dotonbori. We had breakfast included in the room rate, a traditional Japanese breakfast with their own homemade tofu which was delicious. Staff were great. Would definitely recommend this hotel for the location and atmosphere

My room smelled of cigarettes even though the floor was non smoking. I think it filtered from the other floors. The room was awesome though. It had a fridge and air conditioner, which was nice. I loved the traditional Japanese style room. I used the public bath and that was fantastic. The staff were super friendly and helpful. Overall I really enjoyed my stay.

You pay for the location, which could not be better. The Japanese-style breakfast was delicious as well, definitely something to try! Do NOT get the room by the elevator (sound). We had a very strong mouldy-mildew smell permeate our room coming from the A/C vents, which was difficult to get used to. Elevator was out of use a couple evenings.

Fantastic traditional experience in city centre

What a charming, traditional inn, right in the centre of Dotonbori area. We were across the road from the most popular area of Osaka but felt so removed when we were in our room. The staff were particularly friendly and even treated us to a welcoming present of chopsticks and green tea. We loved the kimonos in the room and the traditional Japanese breakfast. Highly recommend!!
