If you love old classic hotels, you'll love eggers. It's a bit worn around the edges and things could certainly be rehabbed, but it's nice. There is no truly great hotel in Gothenburg.

Although this hotel is in a fairly noisy part of town (train station etc) when the windows are closed it's totally fine. We stayed in a very large beautiful room and loved everything about this hotel. The breakfast is absolutely delicious, great customer service.

Loved it!

Beautiful historic hotel with a balcony. 2 minute walk from central station and 1 minute walk to tram transportation. So convenient to get around and staff was very nice! Only downside is no AC but we were aware before booking.

Grand old hotel, right where you would want to be.

Very nice hotel (if you have an outward facing room with a balcony). Right next to trams, bus from airport and station and walking distance to just about everything you will want to visit (including a nice park nearby).
[ that said, note as of July 2025 Gothenburg is one huge building site - think Crossrail/HS2 - with lots of restricted access, tram lines disrupted, the waterfront a mess, the Palm House closed and scaffolded for the foreseeable future. ]
Reception staff are good and friendly (they should have pointed out the free maps though).
The front bar patio area is very nice to use, service is excellent and food, albeit expensive like all Gothenburg, is good. Don't approve of it being out of bounds to residents when the once a month (fee payable) concert is on though, although the curiously the inside bar was deserted whilst that was on, so a bit swings and roundabouts.
Breakfast is excellent - good quality, broad mix of pretty much everything you might want, readily replenished with adequate seating throughout the 3 hours it is available.
Minuses (not many....).
- There should be free water in an expensive hotel. There is however free tea and coffee in reception and comfy seats to drink it.
- no air conditioning - you can open tthe big windows but the trams run from about 0430 to midnightish and screech a bit. Actually you don't notice after a while. It was drizzly so not a problem for us.
- wifi is consistently good but not enough sockets or USB points for recharging

We stayed for two nights and this was our favorite hotel out of our two week Scandinavian vacation. The staff was friendly and helpful the room was clean and comfortable and the location was great, right next to the train station. Breakfast was wonderful, with lots of choices. The room was beautiful, as was the lobby and restaurant. Would definitely recommend to others and we would definitely stay again!

What a great traditional hotel. Old time classic building with a creative interior to match. Well thought out. Very clean and seems well managed. Location is super central in front of the main train station. It can get a bit noisy with the rail traffic but you will adjust. Overall I highly recommend this as a traditional location with old world charm.

The city was having a half marathon the day of our arrival which made arriving or departing the hotel almost impossible. The hotel did not provide any advance guidance prior to arrival on how to access the hotel when all streets were closed. It made the arrival at the hotel almost impossible. Had we received advance notice we would have made alternate plans and adjusted our arrival times.

This is a historical hotel with a ton of character. The staff is very friendly. The rooms spacious, and a decent restaurant and bar in the lobby. It’s right next to train station. Word of caution. It’s loud and there is no air conditioning. The double windows seal out the sound at night effectively, but if you don’t like warm rooms best to stay away during the warm months.

Won’t stay anywhere else when we return

Everything about our stay was absolutely incredible. As we checked in they let us know that since we were staying longer that they upgraded our room, which was a very nice surprise.

Breakfast everyday was very stocked and plenty of options so that you don’t have to have the meal twice.

The best of boutique hotels

In fairness, I will start with the few positives I can say about the Eggers. It is well located if proximity to the main train station is important, and it was for me. Public spaces are what one expects of a decaying Grande Dame from the turn of the century.

The room they put me in should be reserved for suicides. It had a single window facing a small lightwell with many other room windows facing into it, providing no privacy if the window and curtains were open. It was painted in very dark colors and poorly lit. When I checked in there was a burned out bulb, not that it mattered. Once I saw what some of the other rooms were like I realized I had really gotten the shaft.

Staff were friendly and behaved as if they were going to be helpful, but ultimately, frequently were not. There was a heated towel bar in my shower and when I mentioned to reception that I needed to learn how to use it, they said they would take care of it. That was the end of that.

The bed was very uncomfortable. It may have been a double, or their version of it, but there were two thin, uncomfortable pads on top of what appeared to be a mattress. Neither night there provided me with more than about 3 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

The bathroom was poorly maintained. The shaving mirror was falling off the wall. There was mildew in the grout in the shower. Towels were threadbare. If I were staying one day longer I would have moved to a different hotel.

The room smelled like fish the moment we walked in. It has nothing to do with being near water. There was just a fish smell soaked into the room. The hotel doesn't have air conditioning. So, if you want to be cool at night, you need to open the window. However, there is a metro station next door. So, if you open the windows at night, you'll have to listen to trains and police sirens all night. Also, the bathtub is \"modernized\" to include a shower, but it's too easy to make a mess if you actually do try to shower. The location is great. It's right next to beautiful gardens and near the mall. It's also very walkable to parks and shopping areas. It's also a very beautiful hotel with a lot of history.

I stayed in Gothenburg one night only and I had to catch a train to Stockholm the following morning. I’m happy I picked this hotel which was next to train station which in some European cities can be bad, but Gothenburg is small, safe and it was easy and convenient to get around from Eggers. Check in was fast and efficient, the room had everything I needed plus it was comfortable and clean. Great stay!

I encountered some issues during check-in with my service dog; the staff attempted to charge me a fee, even though he is a service animal, country to what their website states. Additionally, there is no charging stations near the bed, which is significantly inconvenient for me since due to heath reasons I need to connect my CPAP and heart monitor

Vi kom lite innan incheckningstiden men som tur var hade vårat rum hunnit blivit städat och dessutom blev vi uppgraderade till ett superior dubbelrum med balkong!
Väldigt trevlig personal och bra service. Rummet var mycket fint och stämningen på hela hotellet fantastisk. Frukosten var en klassisk frukost med både varmt och kallt, bra utbud.
Vi kunde även lämna väskor i ett bagagerum efter utcheckning eftersom tåget hem gick senare på eftermiddagen.
Det enda som kanske kan störa vissa är att hotellet ligger mitt i centrum och man hör spårvagnar etc. ganska väl in, men har inget som störde oss - bara mysigt!
Kommer definitivt bo här igen!
