The Cullen is a lovely hotel, it’s just starting to show signs of age and wear. The balcony that we paid extra to have was dirty, the furniture just an old cracked table and 2 dirty plastic chairs. The penthouse is so nice, it is a shame that there are cracked pavers on the balcony, some are raised and are a tripping hazard. It a sad to see the hotel not being maintained.

Good area nice room with balcony loved the extra touches staff were very unfriendly never even looked up from desk to greet us we were very jet lagged and was woken up every morning by work men at 8am banging about in the rooms above we were thinking of staying an extra few days but have moved on to a near by property shame

The staff upon arrival were lovely, prompt & very helpful when checking in which is always a great cirst impression! Our room was even better than the photos suggested, bigger too.
Great comfy bed & pillows with a lovely lounge area to chill out & get ready to head out for the evening.
It’s the second time we have stayed here & will continue to keep coming back along with being close to cafes & restaurants for the next mornings breakfast!

A nice stay at The Cullen. The staff were very helpful and polite. The rooms could do with a little update and a deep clean. There was a pile of (what looked like) plaster dust in the bathroom. Great location amongst the bustle of South Yarra. Would visit again.

The lights were falling out of their fittings, and the unit was not clean. The balcony was filthy and littered with cigarette butts. The doona insert was placed between two sheets instead of in a cover, and the pillows were so uncomfortable that I struggled to sleep and honestly the worst night’s rest I’ve ever had in a hotel.

I regretted every minute of my stay.

Stayed at The Cullen Melbourne – Art Series and on my third night found cockroaches in my room one on the bed, another on the wall (I have videos). Staff acted like nothing happened, and even room service wasn’t aware. They moved me to Room 217, but with trains outside and no soundproofing, it was impossible to sleep. For a 5-star hotel, this is unacceptable. Offering only a one-night refund for such unhygienic, and poorly maintained conditions shows they do not meet true 5-star standards.

I couldn’t wait to write this review. We visited an old pal who is doing it tough. He ‘Bedder’ get well 😉. Our last thought was where we would stay. First and closest place was the Cullen Prahran. I had no idea what it was until we arrived. From the start I‘ll fess up I love art. The Cullen is saturated with it, Adam Cullen (RIP). We were given a studio room it was huge, comfortable and beautiful. A meal at Dad Vietnamese restaurant and a great nights sleep and a topped off just what we needed after a long day. I’ll find excuses to visit Melbourne again just for that reason and Prahran Market so close so easy.

Not very impressed with false advertising

Had issues at check in, had booked a multiple bed studio room. Arrived to room to only one bed.
Paid for a room with multiple beds which was more expensive than a single bed room. If I wanted a single bed room I would’ve booked one. Hotel blamed this website Hotels.com. We had less then an hour to get ready for a hens night after all the back and forth between the hotel and the website went back and forth over getting another bed into the room as the hotel didn’t believe they could fit one. In the end was quite annoyed, I booked a multiple bed room I would’ve liked to have attended my room and everything be there and ready instead of the back and forth over asking for what I originally booked.

The hotel has a lot of potential however a few things let the place down. Our room showed signs of wear and tear. It would have been nice to know that there was no room service or onsite restaurant prior to our booking, as we have a child we had to leave the hotel everytime for meals.

TV is old and did not connect with phone even with instructions it only connects for 1 minute then requires wifi to be reset. My room was near laundry room and it got very noisy in the mornings.

Loved my stay here . Great location right near the prahan markets and a short walk to chapel street for shopping. I was there for work and it was a very quiet hotel. It was a great idea tô opt out of housekeeping in exchange for a bottle or wine.
Only thing I didn’t love is the pillows they were all super soft and even all 4 stacked didn’t give me enough support - personal preference. Would love to come back and stay here again.

Spacious studio with everything you need. Convenient location although it can get quite noisy at night. Reasonably priced and I would definitely consider staying here again. My only comment is that their check-in/out times are quite inflexible due to being booked out on most days, so plan ahead.

Not what it used to be!

Its not what it used to be thats for sure! Now owned by a big chain is very obvious… A hotel with no restaurant = room service at all and a limited minibar should probably loose some stars. But I have mentioned this before but you dont seem to update your info much?! Still went since its a good location for a worktrip but will rethink next time due to a lot of restaurant closures in the area.

Hit and miss on the quality of the mattress, this time the mattress was old, hard and lumpy. Not what I was looking forward too as previous stays I had found that the mattress was soft and comfortable

Think black curtains to keep the sun out and easy to manage the temperature of the room. Overall a very peaceful stay and a deep sleep. Great location - across the road from Prahan Market and near Chapel st.

It was quite modern and artsy - we liked the art flavour, but one thing we did not like was the misted glass that was the only thing around the bathroom which made for very low privacy when in the bathroom for a shower or to use the toilet.
We loved our balcony and enjoyed some drinks there in the evening and then we made our own breakfast and sat out there in the morning. The staff were very helpful to provide us with extra glassware and items that we needed for our drinks and breakfast.
The bed was very comfortable but there was quite a bit of street noise during the night.

My friend and I had a girls' weekend in Melbourne and decided to stay at The Cullen because of its location. It did not disappoint.

Where it disappointed is in the quality of the bed and pillows. The bed was creaky and springy; and the feather pillows lacked any form of support. Basically, the basics of any hotel stay got missed in this beautifully decorated room. We did ask for firmer pillows on our second night but even the staff at the front desk was apologetic for the firmness of it. And the bed in Room 115 should probably just be donated to charity.

I'd love to be able to highly recommend this hotel but it's difficult to when you can't get a good night's sleep.

Nice hotel, a bit far from downtown

A very nice hotel with friendly staff. The room was good size and appointed well. The restaurant onsite is closed but we found good choices nearby (highly recommend Angus & Bon). The location seems a bit far from downtown, but you can catch the train nearby and it's a quick and inexpensive ride back and forth.
We liked the hotel, but if we returned we would probably stay closer to downtown.

Loved the quirky art filled spaces, the room was a very good size, with a small sofa so somewhere to sit other than bed or desk chair.
With the amazing Prahran markets over the road, as well a selection of restaurants and the wonderful Oltre cafe with wonderful coffee and ambience.

Otherwise the amenities were nice and the style and layout of the room was great. Reception and staff great and helpful. Great location with transportation, shops and food venues.

This was a very disappointing hotel. It is definitely not cheap but wanted to treat my daughter and I to something a bit different. I also chose this hotel as there was a restaurant, bar and breakfast all within the property which is very important to me as I have a mobility issue so can’t walk far. On arrival we were told the restaurant was closed for renovations, so no dinner, no drinks and no breakfast. There was nothing online letting you know this or I would obviously have booked elsewhere. We ended up having to get Uber eats.
Our stay was for three nights but left after one, I was refunded two nights but think I should have been refunded for all three as I then had to find somewhere else to stay, pack up and move. I hate complaining but this was very disappointing.

The studio room was well appointed and modern. Super little kitchen with fridge and stovetop. Great shower water pressure. Street noise from local clubs and tram was noticeable but really only a minor factor so bring earplugs if you're a very light sleeper. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat.

Hidden parking charges. The room had a non functional cubical for a bathroom. Repairs to the safe and shower were not carried out whilst I was there. There is no food at the property. There is no luggage rack or any place to put a suitcase.
