Fantastic location, staff are so kind, clean and comfortable, the 2 bedroom top floor apartment is one of the only ones in St Kilda with a balcony and privacy - view of the city in the distance. It is quiet, can't hear street noise or the trams. Close to everything. Just needed more glasses for 4 people in the room.

The room was very tired and had bad paintwork, patch up jobs everywhere. Bathroom ceiling was covered in mould, grout in shower mouldy. Dust all over ceiling fan and aircon looked dusty too, was spitting water on me the first night. Bed was comfortable and sheets were clean thank god. Floor in common areas looked un-vacuumed despite vacuum cleaner sitting out for most of day.

The shower grout was mouldy
The room is old and tired and needs updating
There’s no lift and my wife was on crutches so was hard for her to get up and down the stairs
The aluminium frames they have put inside the old windows go over the door knob to the balcony so make it awkward to open the door
The out door table is all rusty
The fridge in the room was noisy so you heard it when you were trying to go to sleep
The ceiling has all exposed pipes
It is old and dreary and is in definite need of updating with what they are charging for a night
Very disappointed the pictures on the website aren’t what you actually get

Location of hotel in St Kilda was excellent. The Tolarno itself has an arty boutique feel. It looks a bit tired in places but if you can past that I would stay again. 2 mins walk to great Irish bar - Fifth Province. You need to go there.

Love that the business has a history of Australian art, having connection to Mirka Mora, art gallery director and well known art collector. So good to see ongoing paintings of all sizes and contemporary styles in the rooms and hallways.
Stephen at the front desk was very helpful and knowledgeable - a delightful person.

Bohemian punk hospitality at its St Kilda best

Tolarno iS iconic in Melbourne. I remember it as an art gallery in the 1980s, when it was the scene of incredibly diverse exhibitions, managed by George Mora, the son of gallery founders, George and Mirka Mora. Mirka is renowned for her painting illustration work, with its distinctive patterning. Tolarno is a brilliant hotel conversion. Art is everywhere, distinctive recognisable art of diverse media and style. In some areas it is as if pieces of gallery have been hewn from the old walls and repurposed to continue its education and entertainment roles here. Tolarno was known for its hearty food, generosity of spirit and hospitality. All of those qualities are on display now, and the staff generate a welcoming vibe even when they are not around. One never feels stranded. The rooms are comfortable and well maintained, with a strong character of homey architecture before the ubiquitous marble, plastic and flat plasterboard of contemporary hostelries. There are no lifts and rooms are on various levels, making the place inaccessible to many, but its lack in this area probably contributes to its incredible affordability. You are right in the midst of Fitzroy Street here and on the quieter side of the street. I heartily recommend Hotel Tolarno.

The staff at Tolarno's are very pleasant, helpful and accommodating. The hotel is quirky and has been a part of the neighbourhood for decades. It is full of artwork and the downstairs restaurant - currently closed for renovations - will be a welcome re-addition when it eventually reopens. The property is within walking distance to the beach, eateries, venues. The tram stop is literally outside the door and a tram journey into Melb CBD takes approximately 15 minutes. The property, given its age, is not perfect, but is a local landmark and should be preserved as is.

The staff at tolarnos are friendly and helpful. They are the property's best asset.
The property is old but iconic. It has its quirks.
The rooms are well resourced however with fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle, tv. The shower is clean and with ample hot water. The property is walking distance to the beach and tourist attractions.

Needs a refit of nearly all appliances despite appearing near new (TV, fridge, Fans in room and in bathroom- didnt use the microwave but the jug worked), a chair so there is somewhere to sit other than on the bed and somewhere to put electronic appliances handy to this. Some peeling paint on ceilings points to water leaks in places. Hot water availability was also uncertain. I stayed 4 nights and no room service at all despite kitchenette encouraging own food preparation and only one very small garbage bin (and no bowl to eat cereal etc if you could find out where to buy it). Had to ask for a fresh hand towel. The existing front cafe / bar and restaurant are no longer operating and no information about nearby Metro's to get your own or alternate cafe's restaurants. New day manager trying hard to help but a proper audit is essential to establish what needs to be done. Very sad to see such an iconic cultural place going to ruin. I had also booked and paid for 4 nights in advance through Wotif but when a charge came through that a payment was going to an unknown company in the US despite the notice that there were no foreign currency charges, I responded to a scam warning from my bank and as a result my credit card was cancelled at considerable inconvenience to myself. I subsequently found out from the hotel that Exepedia owned Wotif and were responsible in the US (under a different name) for the transaction-too late.

For the most part the room was clean and well presented.

However, there were several long, black hairs on the bed and bedside table and the bath tub had a film of dust indicating it had neither been used or wiped down for an extended period.

Finally, there was no soap apart from a very small tube of body wash. One small bar soap would have been sufficient.

On entering it was ok. Not amazing, just ok. Children were happy enough until mice (yes, plural!) began running across the floor. Watched them run out of our room and down the hallway under the reception door. Once we were fairly confident there was none in our room we had to get a blanket to block the gap under the door. Leaves you with a foul taste in your mouth and an uneasy feeling for the remainder set of the evening.

Despite booking months ahead, I was given a lesser basement room. Peeling paint, grubby carpet, non working ceiling fan, little natural light from tiny widows at pavement level. Reception unable to make changes. At least clean sheets, comfortable bed.

When I approached the room, I could smell smoke, cigar smoke to be accurate.
Once in the room it was clear someone had been smoking, it reeked. The smoke detectors were covered in plastic bags (unsafe) The carpet by the sink area was soaking, the blinds looked like they had never been cleaned, there was black mould on the sofa cushions and in the bathroom.
BUT, when I approached the manager he changed my room with an upgrade which is the only thing saving this hotel from a 1 star rating.

The person who checked me in on Thursday and Checked me out on Monday was very kind and attentive. The issues I experienced during my stay were mainly related to the cleanliness and the noise from other guests on the floor above me.
Regarding the cleanliness theres there was mould above the showers and dust along the walls. I had to request a staff member check the door next to the toilet as it had concerning brown stains which wiped away with some dampened toilet paper. The table provided in the lounging area of the room had marks and stains over it. The bin and blinds in the room also need some repairs. For the nights over the weekend there were no issued with sound until the last night (sun). A larger family had been booked into a small room above mined and there was consistent thumping for hours before I complained to reception. I later was later awoken 10:30 pm by more constant thumping and yelling from the family where I texted the number provided to speak to the room again. I was then again woke at 2am by the thumping in the room again. I didnt bother to text or call as I received no response to my text messages from earlier.

I liked the position and the quirky artwork. The room itself had a lovely outlook over Fitzroy Street but was in disrepair with water damage and worn carpet. The television didn’t work at all and there was no milk for the tea or coffee provided. The room was not very clean and I wouldn’t stay here again.

The cleanliness of the room could have been better (with the floor underneath the chairs and bed needing a better vacuum).

It’s run on a shoestring, I stayed 3 days and had to ask for a top of shower gel. Nobody cleaned my room in that time. The light globes were cheap ones that had a wierd flicker to them which was super annoying, and the bed was really soft (I know some ppl like that) the blinds in the room didn’t work properly so I felt a bit exposed in the bathroom to the neighbouring apartments, no onsite parking, glass doors in the entrance grubby and fingerprints (I know they’re hard to keep clean but if it’s glass it should be clean), ghostly vibe

The location was great for visiting Melbourne with the tram right outside the front door and St Kilda and the beach at the end of the road. The room was a little tired and some of the electrical points/light switches need some attention. However it was comfortable and good for a small family (we stayed in the suite). The front desk staff were very helpful!

But the place smells musty and our room was run down with several broken lamps, air conditioner, dusty blinds, dirty bath etc. it just needs a total deep clean. The place and vibe is super cool though and the staff were lovely. Restaurant and bar were both closed.
