The overall experience was tainted by staff searching every piece of luggage, backpack, purse for small amounts of cash to steal beginning while out for dinner the very first night...

This practice is known as \"Ant Theft\", stealing small amounts not likely to be noticed...

I detected this happening every time a staff member had a legitimate reason to enter the room while no one was around, such as delivering something in the evening...

The room was overdue for a full refresh... The ocean view was everything promised... But for the attempted thefts, I would have given at least 1 more star...

If you're a booze hound who doesn't like wine and you're not a foodie, and you like to hang out in the pool all day and make lots of noise, this is the place for you.

If you love nice wine (never mind great wine, just half-decent wine) and good food (never mind excellent food), this ain't it. The white wine was absolutely terrible in all the bars and most of the restaurants. There was a passable Frontera sauvignon blanc in two restaurants (Tokio and Krystal). The only good food was at Tokio, where the tempura, salmon and gyoza were pretty good. The rest of the food verged on godawful.

The air conditioning struggled along in our room - couldn't cool it lower than 23 degrees. Most of the entertainment was embarrassingly bad, except for the odd band that played before supper.

On the plus side, the pools are lovely, the facility is spotless, the staff are mostly very nice. The coffee shop Cappuccino was awesome: great coffee and cinnamon buns. The spa is decent.

All that being said, we won't be back.

Overall would recommend we enjoyed our stay! Room was a bit old but was spacious and clean. Pools were beautiful, service out there was excellent, Particularly Christopher!
However not sure why it cost more to stay at palace vs riu. Very disappointed with the beach setup at riu palace. They kept stacks of old falling part lounge chairs under a bunch of trees. Id have to drag one out myself. Narrow beach area. On last day i walked down beach to see riu & was shocked to discover rows of new beach chairs. The pool design also didn't make sense. The only adults only swim up pool was the tiniest one! So everyone is crammed in there occupying same tables and seats all day long while the little kids had these big enormous pools to throw balls around and scream. I was disappointed this hotel is not adults only like the palace in punta cana. Another frustrating issue we ran into is they said no reservations at restaurants , 1st come 1st serve, HOWEVER that was a lie at the steak house. They pick and choose who they wanted to give a paper slip to to reserve a table. It took us 2 nights of trying to eat there and after talking to a few other people learned about these paper reservations that no one offered us. I would say the extra money to stay at palace is not worth it.

Hotel is old.! Charged a fortune but is in dire need of repair. Walls were dirty, decor outdated. Furniture in need of repair.

The room was discussing. Very outdated. There was an ear ring (lip ring) on the bathroom floor and was never cleaned up while we were staying there. Just very poor quality of work in the room. Felt like I was in a dorm room back in college. No restrooms by the pool. And getting lunch during the day at the buffet they need to have paper plates so people can take food to the pool. I saw a lot of people walking out with the plates but I talked to quite a few people and myself got stopped.

The only thing that made this stay on the annoying side (and was quite a common thing to see/discuss with others experiencing the same) was the key cards they use are very old and don't hold their charge, meaning coming back to your room with your arms full from shopping, tired or needing to use the restroom is your key would not work and you would have to go back to the front desk. At the desk however, they would tell you that your key got too hot, was close to your phone, etc., every single time, regardless that it never happened. Make them give you a new key (like other guests told us that they had to) and problem was solved! Just hate that it took so long and so many trips to the desk to get fixed. Other than that, was amazing!

The outside of the resort is nice. The rooms are a bit dated. I know they will be upgrading them soon but we walked over to The Riu next door which was less in price and the venue was very nice. Also the buffet at the next door venue is so much better. Riu Palace needs to upgrade their food. Also 3 different times we caught them using different alcohol and even water in their bottles. We saw another patron drink tequila and complained it was pure water. The bartender was so embarrassed and immediately fixed the situation. It’s honestly a nice property but needs upgrades.

This please was incredible!!! The food, the staff, the property, the entertainment was all top notch. We never did any of the restaurants because we had kids and didn’t want to wait in line so can say that the buffet has amazing food and soooo many options to choose from. There was always chairs to sit around the pool. The staff who do the entertainment were super fun and engaging. The wait staff especially Christopher were amazing at drinking you drinks either on the beach or around the pool!!! The rooms were made up everyday and stocked the mini fridge. Everyone was so friendly and helpful this was probably the nicest resort we have been to. 5 plus stars!!! Would go back tomorrow if I could

The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive with a few exceptions. The food was great with lots of options. The property is beautiful, however the rooms are in need of a reno which is apparently happening this year. The $600 credit for each room is misleading as it is in the form of coupons that can only be redeemed for certain things.The spa was a disappointment. The massage was good but overpriced. The steam room was not functioning, and there was no communication as such. The Jacuzzi was not functioning fully either. The men’s change room had no hot water in the shower and there was a painting crew in there during regular hours. The painters were also going in and out of the ladies change room at their leisure which was incredibly uncomfortable. We have not stayed at a Riu before and not sure we will again.

Its dated but will be going through renos soon. The $600 spa credit doesnt count towards the spa service. The steam shower wasnt working.
Food was great, service was fantastic. Oscar, Keka, Aleandro and others were amazing.
Come when renos are done. Or go to Guanecauste RIU for beautiful rooms.

RIU is my fav chain of resorts. Been here about 12 yrs ago with a bf and was amazing.

Keep up the good work RIU!

Rooms are dated but comfortable for the most part. Our mattress was sunken on each side which was annoying rooms = 6
The grounds are a 10, pools beach very nice. All staff was very professional. Weird line-up for speciality dining and I rate them a 6 on a 1-10 scale. Buffett was above average I give it an 8. Very slow bar service for any lunch or dinners. Pool bar doesn’t open till 10am😔 if this is your first all inclusive experience you would be very impressed.

The resort is a bit dated, but I think they are getting ready to renovate this fall. The room was clean, the resort was very clean, and staff was very nice. The food was pretty good. Some restaurants were better than others but all around great. We enjoyed that we could go to the other resort for breakfast and lunch. This is a great value for the cost. The pools are beautiful and the beach is lovely. We are talking about coming back in a year or two already.

The Staff was very very polite. The property is worn and needs updating but kept very clean. The pool areas are small considering the size of the resort. Restaurant food was okay, could be better and have a better variety. The buffet was horrible. My biggest complaint of all, was the $600 “credit”…. It is NOT a credit. It is $600 IN COUPONS! There is a very big difference between the two!!

Hotel is way overdue for a renovation. We had a wedding here and almost every room our party stayed in required a complaint for maintenance. 8 out of 12 rooms had issues. Showers broken, air conditioning broken, room keys failing numerous times, tvs broken, a colony of ants in one room, and a few nasty moldy looking beds. Reported the issues and were told maintenance would come fix everything. No one ever showed up. They also refused to exchange rooms. We had 5 people sick from the food. Restaurants were hard to get into and did not take reservations. If you were not in line at 5:15-5:30 you likely were eating at the buffet. Food was subpar even for an RIU(4th I’ve stayed at). We also had to corner the wedding coordinator to get things lined out because he kept canceling our meetings. After that he did great, wedding went perfectly. Have been to 10 all inclusive resorts now and as far as the building, food, and service this one was by far the worst. The grounds, location, and beach were awesome. The Riu Guancaste next door looked to be much better. Will definitely come back to Costa Rica but will not be visiting the RIU Palace.

Main door in room did not work twice did not want to open, with working key, did not register original key card as well or after getting it fixed. Fan in the room made so much noise when it was on. Bathroom door would not close all the way. Staff was very kind. Most things in the room were okay but definitely need to be looked at or replaced.

We were just there recently. Overall, we had a good experience, but there were two issues worth mentioning.

First, if you want to have dinner at one of the restaurants in the evening, you pretty much need to be in line by 5:45 pm to get a table or reservation. If you arrive later than that, your dining options are very limited and usually end up being the buffet.

Second, the room felt outdated. The ceiling fan was squeaking constantly. We asked for someone to come check it out, but no one ever did.

Other than that, I can’t really say anything bad. The food was good, the service was great, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. We were told that hotel renovations are planned for August, which should be a big improvement.

Staff are amazing, very friendly, go out of their way to help. Hotel rooms need some updating. Room refrigerator not working- we called and guy plugged it into different outlet. He left and it promptly quit working. Food pretty good. Some desserts were a little funky. Nice pools and chair options with shade. Felt very safe. Did two excursions thru hotel- nice. Nexus tours did great job.

My stay at RUI Palace Costa Rica was average overall. The property is clearly outdated and in need of a major remodel. Rooms and common areas feel worn and do not reflect the standards expected from a “Palace” resort.

The food was below average, with inconsistent quality. Access to the specialty restaurants required waiting in long lines (first come first serve only). There are no reservation system —guests should not have to spend vacation time standing in line.

While the staff were courteous and friendly, they often provided incorrect or conflicting information regarding access of other RUI restaurants and resort policies, which caused confusion throughout our stay.

Overall, this resort did not meet expectations. Without significant renovations, improved food quality, and a better restaurant reservation system, I would not recommend RUI Palace Costa Rica.

El peor hotel que he ido en Costa Rica all inclusive de todas las marcas que hay!!. Te dejan entrar al hotel después de la 1:30( no gasten el tiempo de ir temprano) obligan a toda la gente hacer fila por las afueras, bajo un calor. Vinimos con un grupo grande en familia y para la desgracia si ocupas ir al baño (que caminar como un 1km) solo dejan ir de 2 en 2 personas. Nos dejaron entrar al lobby para esperar porque veníamos con un bebé, pero tampoco nos dejaron hacer el check in antes, y justamente en ese momento vimos como varios extranjeros hacían el check in sin ningún problema. Hicimos la queja pero la excusa de ellos fue que los extranjeros tenían un itinerario, que ellos no ven la hora del check in ósea que pobre la excusa que se inventaron.
Las maletas lo tuvimos que llevar nosotros mismos porque después de esperar 2-3 horas aún no estaban en nuestros cuartos, mientras que el mismo muchacho encargado de llevarlas ni estaba ocupado. El ventilador de nuestro cuarto estaba averiado, nos hospedamos 4 días ahí y nunca llegaron a solucionarlo.
He ido 3 veces a este hotel y literalmente han caído muy bajo para ser un hotel de gama. Y como consejo deberían de poner un rótulo en cada habitación que diga que el agua no es potable.

I traveled with my family and parents. The resort is very old and outdated, and the food quality is poor. The service is acceptable but unremarkable. There are no gluten-free options available, including desserts or bread. Basic amenities are also lacking—there were no shower caps, slippers, cotton swabs, or Q-tips provided. The rooms had a noticeable moldy smell.

The beach is poorly maintained, with plastic trash scattered along the shore. It was disturbing to see plastic bottles and cups on the beach, and I found myself repeatedly cleaning them up to prevent them from being washed into the ocean. Won’t go back!

La comida es espectacular, realmente uno de los puntos más fuertes del hotel. La atención del personal y los tragos son buenos, aunque en lo personal no me agradó el uso excesivo de plásticos.

El mar no es nada del otro mundo: al estar en el Pacífico, las olas son fuertes y el agua es oscura. Además, la playa es pública y no está bien cuidada, no hay sillas ni espacios adecuados para sentarse o pasar el día cómodamente en la playa.

En general, una buena experiencia por la comida y el servicio, pero con áreas claras de mejora en la zona de playa.

Stayed for 10 days with family including Xmas and NYE. The room is screaming for updates, cracked and broken glass tiles in shower, damages walls and fixtures, ants and other bugs everywhere and in bed. We were missing sheets and soap and shampoo after housecleaning visits. Elevators not working most of the day.
Food was ok, nothing special for Xmas or NYE except some cheap seafood salads added. Buffet for breakfast and lunch nearly identical every day. The restaurants were impossible to get in, we tried 10 times to get the Japanese restaurant and we were denied service, their excuse was poor people line up 1 hr before the restaurant open on their vacation so they can get in as they don’t have any reservations service and we watched the exact same group dinned at the same restaurants over and over as we had to go to buffet. Some of the foods at buffet was clearly not fresh and was reheated leftover of the restaurants from night before. The cheese and dairy selection was lukewarm and not refrigerated. We did tried the steak house, it took 1.5 hours for the food to come, the med-well fillet steak was rare and chewy piece of meat folded into a ball to make it look like a fillet. The Italian restaurant lamb chop was 3 tiny pieces of mostly fat than meat.
Entertainment was very outdated and mostly boring. The live music was selections of handful of songs repeated everyday. The NYE party was just terrible with DJ playing 80s Hip Hop and R&B. Some shows cancelled due to technical.

The constant demagnetization of room key cards was extremely frustrating and our ground floor room had too many bugs with most of us getting bit overnight in our beds. I had 8 bites on second to last night on the bottom of my feet making it difficult to walk the rest of the trip.

Failure to Accommodate Dietary Needs: We are vegetarian. Despite multiple requests, staff members have been unable or unwilling to provide meaningful assistance. Food options are extremely limited, poorly labeled, and consistently disappointing. For an international all-inclusive resort, this level of disregard for basic dietary accommodations is unacceptable.

Unprofessional and Rude Staff: Several interactions with staff have been dismissive and unhelpful, and at times outright rude. This is completely inconsistent with the standards expected at a RIU Palace property.

Unsanitary Room Conditions: We found ants and lizards in our room, which is unacceptable by any hospitality standard. I have video evidence documenting these conditions. Our shower area doesn’t even have a curtain separating it from the rest of the room. It was us and our kids in the room and the room layout was absolutely horrendous.

Overall Quality Far Below Expectations: The service, food quality, cleanliness, and guest experience do not come close to what was advertised or what any guest should reasonably expect—especially at this price point.

Love the resort. There are a few things that needs to be fixed or updated but it appears that they will be doing that next year. When they update, they need to put restroom facilities NEXT TO THE different POOL AREAS. Walking long distance from the pools is a severe inconvenience. Staff was excellent.

As someone who does all inclusive multiple times a year we were excited to try a RIU. Upon check in we were already alarmed as the woman was not responsive and didnt even answer our question handing us a copy printed map you couldn't even read and saying \"walk that way well bring bags when we are ready\".

We went to the pool buffet, and everything was cold/sat out. We were so worried, but later on I will say that buffet improved, you simply need to come earlier because once you hit about 1 hour prior to close they will actually REFUSE to fill items.

We went to our room, and this is where it got interesting. The rooms are outdated, my daughter had no hot water in her adjoining room, there was broken glass block, peeling paint and even the mirror was missing... MIRROR... I dont know how that is possible but it was? The room had little to NO lighting- we had one room no hot water for 3 days and every single day we had to get our room key redone 4 times a day. They said this was due to our phones but maintenance confirmed it was not.

We went to dinner, and this is where our experience was pretty much solidified. The Italian had only 5 choices, and the food you couldn't even cut with a fork. We tried the Japanese, and again, the food was overcooked, and subpar. There was little to NO options for anyone who does not eat meat/seafood.. so my teen daughter ate rice as her meal. Roomservice? Cold Nachos...ICE cold from the fridge... Staff was amazing, but amenities HORRID

Resort was very comfortable and grounds were well maintained. Staff made you feel welcome and were very diligent about cleaning. Furniture and decor in rooms was a little dated, but not displeasing. A few minor maintenance issues in the room( sliding glass door slammed, sink stoppers didn’t work) nothing that decreased our comfort. entertainment was good. Really enjoyed the Queen cover band that played one night. we did venture over to the other resort that is attached to the palace and it was much brighter and very active with kids and lots of people. we much preferred the palace which was quieter and had lower lighting for a laid-back vibe , with much fewer children. The Beach was nice with calm waters. there were people selling souvenirs or asking if you wanted a massage but were very polite if you said no Gracias. food was great. Enjoyed all the specialty restaurants and had no problems getting in. The buffet for breakfast was pretty much the same every day, but there were so many choices that it was perfectly fine. only criticism that I would have is that the Jacuzzi tub was in the spa and you had to make a reservation for it and it was very underwhelming barely any jets, basically just a big bath. The steam rooms were separated in the locker rooms.Gym equipment was ample. Riu fun staff kept activities flowing, and we did do the water work out class and it was fun. all in all had a wonderful time. would go back to a Riu resort again.

This property is breathtaking and the wildlife that surrounds it is very captivating! RIU never disappoints! Mutiple dining options, plenty of activities and excursions galore! I can't wait to go back. ALSO, make sure to fly into Liberia Airport if this is your destination because any other airport is more than an hour away!

The hotel wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t the best either. I would rate it a 5/10. The reviews said that renovations were made but it looks as if they haven’t been done yet. Being that it looks so outdated it kind of made me feel uncomfortable as if the place wasn’t clean. The food was not the best and not much variety. I only looked forward to eating breakfast. This place reminds me of a carnival cruise. More emphasis is being put on the outside upkeeing than the inside
