The stay was perfect. The hotel is established and you feel the history and class when you are walking in. The hotel staff is always available from unpacking your car and delivery your luggage on arrival to picking your luggage and packing your car back during departure. The service is incredible. The restaurant and bar are good with the variety of choices.

The hotel is pretty dated and for the amount of money paid, I'd stay elsewhere next time. Pros: Breakfast buffet had a wide variety of food although not much hot food. Dining area is very nice. Gym is better than expected and the treatments area is well done. Cons: Hotel rooms don't receive any direct sunlight leaving the rooms always feeling kind of dark. They have thermostats but the hotel had no heating so had to sleep with an extra duvet and wore my fleece all the time. My biggest issue is with the staff and service. Some staff were super friendly and lovely and others were absolutely rude. My mother wanted to pay for lunch and the maître 'd practically threw the receipt at my mother and turned his back on her to answer the phone. There were a handful of rude micro aggressions that we experienced our 4 nights there. Next time I'd pay extra to stay at Boutique Hotel Stresa or save money and stay at a 4*.

Overall very pleased. Hotel’s location & room’s lake view were fabulous! Breakfast buffet was excellent. King room was a good size for 2 people. Room price included pool & spa amenities which were clean & outstanding. Absolutely no complaints except this one - The mattress was old and uncomfortable due to a large sleepers indentation. Definitely time to replace the mattress in room 310!

An old, stately hotel, with works of art in the corridors, lobby and gardens. Wonderful housekeeping and laundry service. Very plentiful buffet breakfast included, where one can sit at a table overlooking Lake Maggiore. The dinner at this restaurant was excellent. The hotel is a 15 minute walk to the town of Stresa, where there are shops, restaurants, and a boat to transport you to the islands. The gym/spa/pool complex is amazing. The crowning glory of the hotel are the expansive lake views from many rooms. What a glorious thing to wake up to sunrise over the lake!

This is one of our favorite hotels in the world. It is Old-World glam, and was a favorite of Ernest Hemingway's. The dining and hospitality are wonderful. We also love the sweet town of Stressa, set on Lago Maggiore. We went Baromee island hopping to beat the heat. The ferry stop was a few minutes stroll from the Hotel. Was all in all an unforgettable experience - and our second time there. We willbe back! .

This is a stunning hotel and was like staying in a palace. The spa and indoor pool were fantastic especially as it rained during our stay. The Hemingway bar was a great place for a drink in the evening with relaxing live music. Some of the room decor is a bit dated. Especially the drapes, bed covers and curtains but otherwise it was a very special place to stay.

A fabulous Grand Hotel

Des Iles Borromees is a hotel that prides itself on delivery and presentation of classic Victorian age elegance and style, with a modern twist. We wanted an elegant Italian hotel full of style, and this hotel certainly delivered. Our room was upgraded to a lake view, presumably because the hotel wasn’t full. Everywhere you looked there was art work, beautiful decor and a luxurious feel, without being overwhelming. The staff could not be more helpful and professional, particularly the concierge. Breakfast was delicious with a wide range of food. The bed was quite firm and the cute balcony would have been the perfect place to sit and relax looking at the lake, had it not been for the weather - it rained! However, we would love to return to the hotel some time in the future, with fingers crossed for sunshine.

Great Hotel overlooking the lake

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It is a beautiful place. The rooms and the hotel were very clean, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. We didn't eat dinner at the restaurant there, but the breakfast and the servers were outstanding. The hotel is walking distance to the city center where all the shops and restaurants are. The view of the lake from our room was beautiful. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone. You can't go wrong.

That’s an awesome, really luxury hotel. Everything - parking, service, restaurant, decor, room cleanliness, location - is top notch!!! The spa is awesome with a large indoor pool from which you can swim to an outdoor pool with various labyrinths, showers and jacuzzis and an outstanding “heat” room with a hamam, a sauna, a Turkish sauna and a snow room!!! When in Stresa this is a must to stay in!

Our recent stay at this historical 5-star hotel was a mix of charm and disappointment. While the ambiance and architecture were truly remarkable, our experience was marred by an issue that, for a hotel of this caliber, should have been easily avoidable.

Our excitement quickly faded when we discovered in the middle of the night that the mattress in our room was broken. It sagged uncomfortably in the middle, making restful sleep nearly impossible. Given the hotel's 5-star rating, we expected a level of comfort that simply wasn’t met.

The following day, we approached the front desk to discuss our concerns and requested to speak with the manager. We were informed that he would be available in an hour. After going for breakfast we returned only to be met with confusion. The staff began searching for him, and after about 20 minutes, we were told that the manager was out of the hotel and not available to address our concerns.

At this point, we expressed our disappointment and requested a discount due to the inconvenience. The staff assured us that they would send us an email regarding their decision. While we appreciated the effort, it felt inadequate given the circumstances.

For a 5-star establishment, we expected upgraded mattresses and a more proactive approach to guest service. The decision we got via email was basically that they are sorry but they can’t give us any discount or refund. We would hesitate to recommend this hotel to others seeking a truly luxurious stay.

Property and in particular the rooms were definitely dated. Bathroom had no ventilation and I found some black mold growing on side of shower door that was not cleaned. Smelled as if plumbing wasn’t the most advanced. Junior sweet was still small. Restaurant staff was incredibly helpful, however concierge and front desk staff was just okay and not the most friendly (maybe it was just to us). For example, we went to borrow an umbrella, but were told they were out, only to have the concierge flag down someone for an umbrella to give to the couple who went up after us. Waited 5 minutes to try to be acknowledged so I could get our luggage and finally I had to let the concierge know we had a train to catch before they helped me. Overall, it was a beautiful hotel, had a lot of old school charm but rooms could definitely use an upgrade and extra cleaning procedure. Concierge could definitely be more friendly, but maybe it was because we are American and spoke English. Spa however was very modern and nice.

This property has an amazing location and walkable to the town of stresa. The spa is absolutely amazing ..one of the best I’ve experienced. Pools are great ! One is deep with diving board . My major complaint is the room needs updating. While I understand the old world feel, the rooms are dated , furniture is old and worn and very heavy drapes also carpeting should be removed for sanitary reasons . Also a/c vent in my room (550) had black dust or mold in it .

It had an outstanding spa and a lovely outside pool and gardens but the common parts were well worn and it reflected 1980 decor. The bar was at the side of the lounge and it gave it a waiting room feel. It would have been nice for it to be in an area with its own identity and access to a designated outdoor terrace. Great grand hotel experience with ‘belle epoch’ architecture, great service, and location. Recent addition in 2021 of large spa, gym, indoor pool free for guests and a plus on rainy days.

Lovely hotel

Wonderful spa, very good breakfast, very decorative hotel.
Only negative is lack of sound proofing.. you hear literally everything from the corridor, doors opening and closing, guests talking, room service.. difficult to sleep after 7am.

A true five star experience

A truly 5-star experience. The hotel staff is exceptional, with the ability to make you feel welcome whether this is your first time visitor or a returning guest. We found that the best thing to do was to go with the flow of the place and let it delight us, and it was worth it.
A few pointers to other guests. The rooms are lovely and spacious, if a bit overwhelmingly baroque. The building is old but well-maintained. Exquisite. At times it feels like you’re in a museum. It’s worth upgrading to a lake view room.
If you want a break from the baroque, head over to the spa which is modern as it gets.
The indoor and outdoor pools are lovely, the views are stunning. The complimentary spa offer is perfect but if you want to experience the treatments go ahead.
We found some of them a little bit gimmicky but pleasant (we tried the Pathway to Heaven, a 2-hour couple’s experience which in hindsight was not the best thing to do but it was ok).
All in all, we met several other guests who keep returning to the hotel time and again, over many years. We can see why, and we ourselves are booking a return trip for next year.

Bed bug bites!!!!

Be careful **** multiple bites, still healing a week after trip. Spoke with other guests who informed us that it was bed bugs as they had an issue as well and saw them in bed.

Check in was problematic as they didn’t seem to have the room on booking. Did not seem to be well run hotel. Very old clientele. Thought we might have gone to an assisted living facility by accident.

Staff service in breakfast area was almost nonexistent. Could not get hot water for tea. Staff busy cleaning tables, but not serving clients. Could not remember to bring milk, or eggs or anything else requested. Happened each day. Requested boiled eggs before leaving to airport to eat later and upon going to eat them later found they were barely cooked and runny.

Overall not what you expect. They have a view (depending on the room), they have an old hotel, but this is not 5 stars.
