Room was not small, not big, just right. I am a solo traveller, but the room is big enough for 2 people. Clean and comfortable. Blockout curtains and no noise from the street or from inside the hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful.
Free drinking water station provided so you can refill your bottle, or you can purchase bottled water from reception (as well as other drinks, snacks, travel adaptors etc.) Free iron provided in common area.
Hotel has a lift as well as stairs. Thai restaurant directly opposite Hotel. Quiet street, safe at night.
Location is handy to Georgetown. I would definitely recommend this place!

Not really walkable to anywhere, grubby looking needs painting in rooms. Cockroaches at night in my room 102. Staff friendly enough and offered to clean the room or change it but no thanks and I changed my hotel. This left me out of pocket for 2 nights accommodation but would you have stayed?

Friendly, attentive and helpful staff. Rooms big enough for a couple of days, and cleaned to a good standard compared to other hotels in Malaysia.

Hotel located a couple if KMs from the centre with limited local amenities and noisy local karaoke until 1am.

I'm not bothered by this, do would stay again

Off the beaten path but well worth the effort

A very clean, apparently family run hotel with attentive service. Our room didn't have any windows but that was almost the only complaint I could imagine for this place. There is a famous char kway teow stand immediately next door which was excellent but be prepared for a long wait. The rooms were clean, the ac, hot water and wifi worked well and there was lots of places to eat in the immediate vicinity. A lot of bang for the buck.

Staffs were friendly and very helpful. We felt welcomed and the staff was well prepared, knowing my name when we arrived. He even let the ac on in our room to cool it down. Very nice gesture and we appreciated it very much. Three of us stayed in one room and the room is very comfortable. We love the free shampoo and soap bar and having to choose our pillows was a unique, fun experience. We love that there's a hot and cold water dispensing machine just outside our room. Wifi was fast, room was nice and quiet, and we're very happy. We'll definitely recommend this hotel and we'd stay here again when we visit Penang in the near future.

Due to the weather, the room was super hot, even though the aircon has been set to 16degree, we have to leave the aircon on whenever we went out, but it didn't help much if we went back in the early evening.
We complained a few times, and the staff came to check the aircon too. They offered a change of the room, but we decided to stay put.
We requested a fan and it was provided as per request.

The room size is good for a triple room. Amber walking space, and we even can sit down to have meals.
The bathroom can be improved with maybe more small racks to contain our toiletries.
The best is that there is a balcony as smoking area!

Staffs are excellent in their customer service.
The lady who checked us in, is very patience and even let us know where to get good food. And I saw that she did the same to the group who checked in before us.
Her explanation on parking was good as well.
Mr Leow is also very friendly and recommended alot of good food too! We most probably gained some weight with the recommendations.
The rest of the staffs are helping and friendly.

Location wise, it is located in good location. Walking distance to Komtar, Time Squares, and many other places.
It is very near to the Jalan Siam Char Kwoy Teow! But waiting time is really long.

Overall, besides the weather, we are happy with the stay and will go back again.

Penang trip

This hotel surprised me by the warm welcome and the great introduction to the sights and food in Penang. Very helpful info. Unfortunately there's no direct bus service. Remember to tell taxi driver the hotel is at Siam Road. That's do the trick. Bit concern is the lack of security as lift can go direct to your floor from car park at ground floor. Could do with more channels on tv though. Definitely value for money otherwise and recommended.

You have to set your expectation right.

The front desk staff was warmth and friendly. However I have set my expectation higher than the hotel.

My impression from webpage was that the family room is going to be big to accommodate 3 adults but it turned out to be too small lack of walking space after the 3 luggage was in.

I was also expecting toothbrush, kettle etc. but was also not provided in the room. However, you can find water dispenser at common area but only at level 1&3 instead of all floors.

The car park was very cramped and it takes a very good maneuver skill to get into the lot without scratches.

The room design is weird as the basin is outside the bathroom instead of allocated inside. Air conditioner is placed at the wrong angle and causes different temperature on two different beds(queen size too cold and single bed is way too hot).

Furthermore, the soundproof is very poor. I can easily listened to what others talking outside my room especially midnight and this is annoying.

Nice little hotel with nice customer service

Spent 2 nights with my sister earlier this month. All receptionists are very welcome and nice to us, at first I thought it was a budget hotel with payable add-ons, but turned me wrong, they offered to choose type of pillow, and asked if we use hair dryer, and it was free of charge. They also have free mineral water dispenser just outside the room. The room is compact but really clean.

Some minor distraction was the room doesn't have good noise isolation from outside, unfortunately my neighbor was really disturbing during the night like shouting and banging their door which made us really hard to fell asleep eventhough we were really tired that day, so I chose to call operators to help :)

Overall I would recommend this hotel for those who look for cheap and clean, also friendly.

The Receptionist (a Malay lady) was very helpful in sharing with us how to get around Georgetown. She gave us a map with the bus numbers and destinations. The hotel is 15 minutes walking distance to KOMTAR (where the main bus station and malls are located). There is no eatery close by to SO Hotel.

She also offered to put our luggage into our room once the room was ready as we were out of the hotel then.

The room had no window but with the price that we paid it was ok. We had a choice of pillow (soft, medium and firm) that we did at the Reception - great service. We stayed at room 103 (be careful of the toilet roll holder as the edge can cut you as you reach for the water hose). There was also a hot/cold water dispenser outside the room which was very useful.

Great Stay!

It was a pleasant stay. Hotel staff were wonderful and extremely informative (even though the location of the hotel is not of the best, the hotel staff provides plenty of information for you to get around). Though the hotel is not close to any bus stops... some walking or taxi is required.

About a 7 min walk (turn right, walk 5 min and turn right again at the main intersection), there's a whole bunch of hawker stalls (somewhat near Hotel Grand Paradise on Jalan McCalister) which open till very late at night.

The rooms could be improved ever so slightly (being cleaner, showers are not the best and sticky floor). The linen seems to be overused and the colour demonstrates that. Obviously this is not a 5-star hotel, but you are definitely getting more than what you are paying for (you get to pick what kind of pillow you like).

For the budget traveler, this hotel is very good and highly recommended.

Love the location and the pillow selection

We usually choose SO Hotel as it is close to food. The hotel rooms are good for the price paid and, most importantly, comfortable and clean. They offer 3 types of pillows to choose from when you check-in and this is unique at its price point.

The staff at SO Hotel really make the difference - always happy to offer local tips and advice on anything that is Penang. You should stay here based on this alone.

Parking is limited but, again, the staff will try their best to secure you a parking spot.

There are water dispensers on alternate floors which is good if you are not a fan of plastic mineral bottles.

We did not have a proper window though, just a small one. Well worth the money spent. Clean hotel. Friendly service. front desk gave a map with bus route numbers which was very helpful. The checkout was at 12PM and our flight was late in the night. If you need some peace and quiet, away from the hustle and bustle then this hotel
if perfect, its away from the city center. Staff and Manager very pleasant and helpful.
You get to choose your dream pillows...lol

We had the best Char Koay Teow , fried by this 79 yrs old man, on a charcoal fire. It was awesome.
We loved the authentic copi tiam shop, very near the hotel, which served roti bakar with half boiled eggs. yummy!!!
Overall enjoyed our stay.

The hotel is within easy reach of the town centre (20 - 30 minutes walk), and 5 - 10 minutes walk from plenty of food and drinking places. Location for it's value is therefore very good.
Rooms are functional and clean.
The staff were very friendly, accommodating, helpful in giving advice and arranging things.
I would use the hotel again.

The hotel is in a quiet neighborhood not far from the city center. The accommodations are basic, but at that price, it represents exceptional value for money. On arrival, we were asked what pillows we wanted? Why? They all felt the same. Prior to arrival, I'd emailed the hotel to ask for a room with a window. Well we did get a window, problem was, we couldn't see out of it. It was at the ceiling! The sheets didn't fit the bed, they were single sheets on a double bed. The blanket we put on the floor, it looked dirty. We there's no safe either so we didn't have anyone in the room the change the towels because we didn't want to risk our belongings. There's a water fountain which gives you free water. They didn't say though that there's hot and cold water. We stayed for 3 nights and I was desperate to a cuppa and there was no kettle. It was only when we were leaving that I saw the hot water tap. Tips: ask for a family room, they do have large windows!

I've stayed there from 5-9 January 2013 and I have no complains. Except that my neighbor wakes up very early in the morning and makes so much noise. But I've had a pleasant time in the hotel. Its clean, the beds are soft, there's hot shower and soap provided and really its a budget hotel, what more can you ask for? All the basic necessities are there. Though there are no cupboards and limited places where we can hang our clothes, (its a matter of how you tidy the room people) I really have no complains. Location wise, its not that near to Komtar, probably about 15 mins walk or 2 bustops away. And its near the main Georgetown area. I walked all the way and its worth it to see the sights.

We had a family room on the 3rd floor: one double bed, one single. The room was clean, with small TV (Star movies, sports and one Malaysian channel) with a large window with views of the hills. The aircon was a little close to the double bed, which could make things cold, but otherwise the room was great. The hotel staff are attentive, very friendly and full of information about the local area. The hotel does not offer any food but there is a local coffee shop nearby for breakfast (not open Sundays/ PH) and a burger place and fusion restaurant (wurst and soto ayam) just opposite. Komtar, Times Square and the heritage district are around 15 minutes away on foot (good food choices and you can catch the bus to other parts of the island). Overall, a great value for money hotel - clean, comfortable and well situated.

Had a good experience while at the Hotel; very friendly and helpful staff. They guided us very well due to which we were able to save a lot on transportation. Will definitely stay at this hotel the next time I visit Penang

Comfortable room, great service, recommended hotel

This hotel is great find, it's a bit out of the way of the tourist sites but still within walkable distance. The owner and staff are very kind and always there to help with ANY needs and info. You can choose your pillow, use the PC for free and the wifi is very good and free of charge. The rooms are very comfy and clean, they are soundproof so a good nght rest is guaranteed. Will go again if I ever visit Penang again. Thank you guys!

service was excellent.. only improvement could be made was with the bed ... it was too soft and it felt like sleeping on a slope all the time, giving me sleepless nights and backaches.
