My mum and I stayed in this hotel for three nights. We thought overall it was good value for money. Pros were - fantastic location close to Forbidden City, helpful staff. Our room had views across the Forbidden City. Cons are - it is dated, the shower was especially antiquated.

Beautiful hotel in core of action.

The hotel is incredible and decorations are on par with an art gallery or museum. The staff is quite nice and always try hard to help. Breakfast was better than expected. Only wish is they would have better electrical outlets by the bed. It also smells as if the room was smoked in despite the ban. I suppose people ignore the rules. What makes the hotel stand out is the location!! Literally steps from Tiananmen Square!!! Beware if you choose a street view or Forbidden City room, it can be veeeery noisy. Tour buses literally show up at 4:30am and let tourists out. Unsure where at 4:30 they are going but u may want to bring some noise canceling ear phones or ear plugs.

Great location, extremely close to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square on one side and Wanfujing Street on the other side. The hotel itself is a bit old and some of that is evident in the room. Taxis were difficult to get - there is no taxi stand, and the staff would just use the Didi app to hail a cab, sometimes taking 5-10 minutes to get one.

The hotel is in the city center and close to everything. I had a great view of the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. The hotel is older. I would not recommend the room service. I ordered dinner one night and it was horrible.

Only Great in Location

This property has an excellent location, just one block from Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, but the property is extremely worn and showing its age. We were told upon check-in that our room was being 'upgraded' to a 'suite' which simply meant we had a separate sitting room, but the room was so cold (heat did not work) that we were moved again. We got a Forbidden City view in the new room which was great, but the room itself was very aged and had a horrible smell (think dead mouse in the wall) near the door and moldy smelling bathroom. The beds were comfortable by China standards. The restaurant was extremely pricey so we chose not to dine there. The rooftop bar/terrace that they advertise in many pictures was closed and the terrace locked, so we couldn't go out to take pictures. I would recommend this hotel only for the location, but definitely not worth the price of the accommodation.

Extremely good location. Facilities ok. WIFI available for use if you have a Chinese Mobile Number. Arrived 24th, no airconditione and can be quite stuffy and hot in the afternoon. then again you will not be in the room in the afternoon.

Hotel ok, impossible answer from staff

I stay in this and Beijing hotels quite often. Excellent location, hotel facilities . However, when the Forbidden City View room I booked was too much noise, the front desk staff told me I either upgrade to another room by paying the difference or downgrade by not receiving the difference and writing a announcement that I was voluntarily requesting the lower grade room with no price difference.

My family love the hotel, with chinese touch in decor. Rooms are clean and staffs are friendly. Some limitations in English. My only complaint is the cost of breakfast ($30pax) although it was good but a bit expensive.

The hotel is located next to the Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, and the pedestrian walking street. You cannot find any better location than this one. Staff members were friendly and helpful, and room was very clean. It is worth to know the hotel has reflected the history of Qing Danasty, went through the republic, communist and capitalismlization time by different section of the hotel building.

Perfect Location and Fantastic Staff

Grand Hotel Beijing was probably the best hotel in Beijing 20 years ago. Today, while it needs an update, its previous glory still shines in the most central and convenient part of the Chinese capital. The guest rooms, gym, restaurants, and meeting places are spacious, comfortable, and meticulously maintained. Most valuable is the staff working there to help guests 24/7. I especially appreciate the gracious and effective help provided by Mr. Zhang Yuanbo and Mr. Cui Chaoxu at the Bell Desk during my recent one-night stay there. Plus, I got a great deal and enjoyed a upgrade to a garden luxury suite, making the deal even sweeter. Can't wait to stay there again next time I visit Beijing!

Hotel was grand at one time... a long time ago. It is in desperate need of updating. Proximity to Forbidden City is good, but not really close to any restaurants or services. Hotel's restaurant is way too expensive for what they serve and they only have 1 not 6 as they advertise. Expedia breakfast deal is a ripoff as it is only for 1 person for 1 day of your stay. Breakfast was worst of our 24 day Asian trip, and all others were included with room price.

Grand Old Hotel, a bit faded but still impressive

We loved this hotel. It's an older hotel with a lot of grandeur to it. The lobby rooms are all beautiful, with chandeliers and wood paneling. Our room had marble tiles in the bathroom, classic wood furniture and tons of space. Some things were a little dated or worn, but they've clearly tried to maintain everything as much as possible. The staff were incredible helpful and the location was great for accessing the metro and walking to the Forbidden City. I would highly recommend, particularly if you want a place with a bit of local character.
Pros:
HUGE room. We had a family suite that had a separate bedroom with a king bed, a twin in the main room, a couch and chairs, two desks, a patio area and a washroom with separate shower and tub. We stayed for 4 nights and the extra space was wonderful since we had three adults.
The staff - we waited to book our tours until we arrived and the staff was extremely helpful in figuring things out, making recommendations and giving us good tips.
Location - there's a metro stop about a 5-10 minute walk away and it's a 10 min walk to the Forbidden City one way and a huge shopping area the opposite direction. It made for a great home base.
Cons - food at the hotel was expensive and there wasn't anything nearby for small snacks.
If older fixtures both you, this isn't for you. If you like old buildings, stay here.
Our suite was on the main (5th floor) facing the interior atrium, so we had NO natural light.

We were in Beijing for four days. The Grand Hotel Beijing is close to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. It was also within easy walking distance to Wangfujing Street. The hotel itself is a little dated but still beautiful and handsomely appointed. The staff is extremely service-oriented. A great stay, overall!

Easy access to all, very clean, neat, safe.

Excellent hotel, 5 min walk to the Forbidden City, Tianamen Sqaure, as well as 2 minute walk to the Wangfujing train stop on the 1 line, easy to connect to from the airport link after one train transfer if using public transportation. The pool is excellent and the staff is very attentive. The gym is great too with an attendant for both who was very kind. Quick and easy check in with staff who spoke English well. I would for sure stay here again. There are so many other sites to see that are easily accessible either by walking or by train. The Wangfujing street food with the scorpions, snakes etc is a few blocks away and the Silk Street market is easily accessible a few train stops away. Loved the pressure of the shower with all the amenities including a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental pick and comb. Rooms are spacious. Thank for Joyce and all the front desk staff. See you again soon!

Upon arrival to the hotel a receptionist asked for a credit card to have deposit which gladly I presented my Sterling (British Pound) credit card but he said : I shall take 16000 deposit, I was shocked because I paid every thing in advance.
my son 44 years old asked for hot chocolate at breakfast, It was a big crisis and managers and dictionaries at the end he agreed to have water.

My stay in Beijing

The location is great, close to many of the sights. The hotel though boasts 6 restaurants, according to their desk people they have one! on the second floor. The design of the shower is such that it floods the bathroom with water, they must know this though. The hotel has great old world charm. Close the main shopping street in Beijing and some of the best Roast Duck Restaurants in the country are only 6 blocks away.

Beautiful older hotel. Our room was very nice, clean and quiet with views of the roofs of the forbidden city. The bathroom was spacious with great water pressure and fluffy towels. Staff very friendly and had basic English language skills. Great location. My husband and I were able to walk to Forbidden City, Drum and Bell Tower and Tiananmen Square.

This hotel, was very beautiful and just blocks from the Forbidden City and Tianamen Square. And just blocks in the other direction to food and shopping. Don't plan on eating there unless you want to spend lots! A coke was $4.50 USD! Other than that we were very pleased! Concierge helped us with a map of the city and recommending where and when to go.
However, if you are looking for quiet.....the street noises (honking and traffic) can be heard starting around 4am! And we were on the 8th floor! We felt very safe there as well.

Additional fee. We have 7 people. I booked four Rooms with breakfast included. However, we checked in, they said only one breakfast included. We have too pay 180 rmb for each of three rooms with two people. I clearly specified two people for each room for three rooms. I also paid $32 per day, per room for breakfast including when I book the hotel.

Nice Hotel very Chinese Style

It was good experience, hotel very nice, really Chinese style, like details on the chairs, the bathroom, the furniture, the hotel social places. Very nice. and staff always helpful. The only downside is the wifi. The connection was not good and when there was connection, the speed really slow.
We decided to go to the Great Wall with the hotel plan that they offer. I believe is either A or C. dont remember well. So just in case you decide for this, the price is 400yuan/person which is ok because it includes in this order: visit to a Silk factory, visit to Ming Tombs, visit to Jade factory with lunch included (the lunch was really good, it was Chinese food and in those round tables where you share the food with everyone else in the tour) after lunch then the Great Wall. I think is ok. This would take the whole day starting at 7am and coming back at the hotel around 6pm.
The hotel is really close to Tiananmen square and to the other side there is this commercial street called WangFuJing, it has like 3 malls and all little stores on the sides. Really liked it if you dont care too much about the wifi our if you have a Chinese phone with data or if your plan offers international roaming...

The hotel was amazingly situated within a 10 minute walk to Tienenman Square and Forbidden City. We selected a family suite as I was traveling with my parents and wanted to have separate sleeping areas for some privacy. The \"suite\" was indeed a one bedroom suite, but they added a second bed in the actual living room space. It not only made the space cramped, but obviously did not provide any privacy either. The decor was very dated and the bathroom door would not close so you either had to try and hold it closed or slide a stool in front of it to keep it closed while using. With a little updating this could be an amazing hotel based on its location, but as is was a disappointment.

I have been staying at this hotel on several occasions.
The higher floors ( 8 and 9) offer a great view of the Forbidden City and this is
the only place that you can see the sun setting over FC and T Square.
The hotel is dated and needs a huge lifting.

Beware of a few issues

Hotel is close to Tian'anmen square and Imperial Palace. Hallways smelled of smoke and room smelled a little musty. Bathroom had some water and mold damage visible. Beware of the buffet breakfast - my wife got food poisoning from it.

Extremely disappointed. The lobby was maintained nicely and there were beautiful pieces of artwork displayed throughout the main hotel areas, but that's where the good review stops. The hotel room hallways stank of stale cigarette smoke as did our room. The carpets, glass windows, elevator handrails, and even the walls were filthy with dirt or handprints (accordingly). The room hadn't been vacuumed and even though I'd called ahead to inform them of our late check-in time, the room was not prepared. The front desk staff didn't even greet us upon our arrival and made it seem like we were inconveniencing them by checking in to the hotel.
The location was convenient enough for our trip itenerary, but unfortunately construction on the side of the building was noisy throughout the night and inhibited pedestrian traffic.
The day time concierge was attentive and helpful and assisted us with booking a tour and with finding an ATM nearby (at the Bank of China).
Overall, the stay was very unpleasant. The central air duct was large enough for a grown man to climb in and we could see the lights of an adjoining room through the duct. It didn't feel safe or secure to leave any of our belongings in the room. Hand and face grease prints all over the window in our room obstructed the fairly boring view of the side street. We were never informed about meal times or locations, so we never got a chance to try it. The wifi was so slow I never once got a page to load.

Perfect location, nice hotel.

The hotel is in the next block along from the Forbidden City, so it's easy to walk to that and Tianamen Sq and all the museums in a few minutes. The next block over is the huge pedestrianised shopping centre, including the Oriental Shopping Mall, with food court (including some western food outlets like Pizza Hut) and lots of designer shops. Off this street is a Chinese market with stall selling live scorpions on a stick and snake kebab - perfect for those Facebook photos! There is a Metro stop just outside the hotel which means you can get around the city without braving the awful traffic.
The hotel is very fancy, the rooms are huge and clean, and everything is 5-star. I managed to get a bargain price (50% off) because it was off-peak, so it was even better. The desk also organises trips to the Great Wall and other excursions, which are easy to book.

It was a really quick stay for me, but first impression is that it is a unique hotel and I'm sad I didn't get to spend more time there. My only issues were that the lights in the room weren't working properly and I had to use the bathroom lights to get dressed. I didn't have time to call the front desk to resolve it as I was pressed for time. The carpet also felt kinda of dingy. But the bathroom was amazingly big, there were 2 complimentary bottles of water which I appreciated and needed since I was on my was to hike the great wall and fresh fruit when I checked in. The front desk staff is also friendly and helpful!

A decent hotel, but certainly no four or five star

The Grand Hotel Beijing was a nice hotel but not a five star as advertised. The room was clean, the reception friendly, and the location was perfect! However there were many things the hotel could have done differently to improve guests' stay: much of the pool area was turned off - saunas were off, the two small soaking hot tubs were not kept well. The air conditioning did not work as well. There were no ice buckets but rather we were given a grocery bag of ice (not a big deal but if they are going to call themselves five star...)
I would recommend this hotel if the price is right, but do not expect to be wow'd.

Great location

Great great location if you are seeking for a place close to forbidden city! I booked a room with the view of it, amazing! My 7 year old loves it! But the hotel is out dated, need some renovation for sure.

Very good location

Very good location for sightseeing and restaurants. While it bears a traditional Chinese design, it may need some renovation to compete with 5 stars hotels. Staff is not fluent in English, but trying to help. Good hotel. Good price.

Excellent location and old world charm

I usually stay at the Grand Hotel Beijing when I'm in the city because of its charm, reliability and location. The staff is always helpful and attentive.

Classic hotel, great location

We were able to walk to all attractions, including the Forbidden City. The claosest hotel to the square and sopping as well. Stop to buy some scorpions to eat at the market on the way!

The hotel is nice, but....

I stayed at the Grand Hotel Beijing for two nights and here are my observations:

1) The location cannot be beaten for sightseeing and shopping.
2) The outward entrance to the hotel and lobby was very nice!
2) The first room I had was filthy, with mold growing throughout the bathroom in the sink, on the shower curtain, and there were dried drops of what appeared to be urine on the floor. The tub looked like it had not been cleaned in weeks, with a ring of dirt all the way around. I took pictures and showed the hotel staff and they were, obviously embarrassed. To the staff's credit, they did put me in a upgraded room after they saw my pictures and the apologized profusely. However, the sink in the second bathroom also has black mold growing in it and the bathroom floor was dirty.
4) The price was very reasonable for the location, with phenomenal shopping around the corner. I would compare the shopping to 5th Avenue in New York City, with large screens that gave the area a unique feel.

The hotel is nice, but the cleanliness of the individual rooms is a significant concern. The front desk staff and location were great! However, if you have any aversions to mold, you may want to consider another hotel.

It was central to the attraction. However, the traffic was totally chaos if you would like to travel up and down. It is the best you can get if you are travelling and about to visit Tian An Men Square and The Forbidden City though.
Like any China Hotel, despite it was non smoking, but most of the rooms were covered with smoking smell. The hotel did allow me to move to another room, which is less smelly.
