What an amazing first stay at a Ryokan! The property, staff and amenities are top notch. The proximity to all the major attractions without being inundated with other tourists allows for a quieter stay. From the welcome tea and sweets, to the thoughtfully laid out room, to the amazing onsen on premises, to the check out process and parting gift, they thought of everything to make your stay enjoyable. I would highly recommend this property to anyone staying in the Kyoto area.

This if the first Ryokan I have ever stayed in so I have nothing to compare my experience to besides one of the other hotels I stayed at while visiting Japan for the first time. With that in mind, I can definitely say that the Matsui Bekkan Hanakanzashi was my favorite stay by far. The entire experience was completely different from a normal hotel. The Japanese breakfasts each morning were an added bonus and this is coming from someone that is a little picky about what I eat (I did my best to be adventurous in Japan which is what I would also recommend to anyone visiting). The housekeeping and staff were amazingly nice and helpful. The place was very clean and besides having to get used to a different style of bed, I thought the stay was better than I could have expected. I don't know if other Ryokans are any better than the Matsui Bekkan Hanakanzashi but I can safely say that you won't be disappointed in your stay here. I would highly recommend this place and look forward to my next trip back so I can stay here again.

The food was spectacular and as a true Ryokan they offered hot baths for guests to relax in. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend this experience.

This was our first stay at a Ryokan and it was a fabulous experience for us. Everything about our stay was wonderful, beginning with a warm and friendly greeting when we arrived to a fun send-off when we departed the next day. Everyone on staff was incredibly kind and patient with us as we quickly learned the nuances of staying at a Ryokan. The dinner and breakfast were both outstanding as was the service and our room and futon beds were impeccably clean and comfortable. We would stay there again in a heartbeat and highly recommend this wonderful accomodation to anyone seeking a fabulous Ryokan experience.

Property described as ryokan but was not as immersive or tranquil as I was hoping for. Breakfast was traditional and ok. Dinner might have been better as it was served in-room but we unfortunately did not get that included. Room amenities were nice.
Although the property was a little dated, it was clean and well maintained.
Do not book if you’re not a fan of “big lights”. Iykyk.

The property was amazing! It was very traditional Japanese but also fully modern! The atmosphere was amazing, very peaceful and welcoming. LOVED the authentic room with tatami mats and robes. It was very spacious and comfortable. The hosts were very welcoming and friendly. I loved the traditional tea provided upon arrival. The included breakfast was delicious! Loved having use of the Sento in the basement. That felt amazing after walking all over Kyoto! Perfect, central location as well. Easy access to the train station, or for walking to the city center. Ubers and taxis were very easy to find as well.

This property was incredible! An awesome place to experience a traditional Japanese inn experience. Food was excellent for both breakfast and dinner, and the staff was super accommodating and made sure we were well taken care of - our stay was rainy, but they went out of their way to ensure we had umbrellas and helped us dry out our shoes after a wet day of sightseeing. Amazing hospitality and would gladly stay here again.

The BEST!!

Absolutely LOVED this place!!! The whole staff was friendly and accommodating. I was with my 90 yr old mom and they were so nice to her.
If you are looking for a Japanese experience with rooms and food, this is it.
Had breakfast and dinner there- breakfast is not a buffet, but a lot of different items to keep you full for the day.
The dinner included seasonal items and was delicious!!
It is also close to shopping and touristy areas.
Will definitely stay there again!!!!

Their hospitality was exceptional and cannot be beat. This is the best experience I've had at a foreign accommodation, a perfect balance between remaining cultural but still welcoming to foreigners. The location is really close to nishiki market and some of the best shopping and dining in Kyoto. We were also able to get to Fushimi inari by karasuma oike and Jr nara line which was a life saver because it was raining and there were no cabs at 7am.

It was a nice short stay with just a couple of nights. I do however feel that the rooms are pricey and a bit of a walk (10-15 minutes) from main road and attractions.

Noise was also evident from other rooms.

The room was however spacious and staff very courteous and experienced the Japanese hospitality first hand. If I were to however take a second trip, I would choose another ryokan closer to Gion.

This trip is a family trip of grand parents with a young child. The hotel staff were very friendly and extremely helpful with all our questions and requests. They were always welcoming us, and we felt like home. The location is great, easy access to many famous attractions. The kaiseki and the breakfast were traditional Kyoto style and was very tasty and great experiences. The room was clean and we’ve also enjoyed the public spa too. We had a great stay, and it was definitely one of the highlights staying in this hotel on this trip.

Superb!!

I had a very enjoyable four-night stay in Matsui Bekkan Hanakanzashi. The staff was super friendly, considerate, and helpful. On the day of Gion Festival Parade, they even prepared us a small package with cold drink, sweat towel, and uchiwa inside. The room was sparkling clean and spacious. The location was beyond excellent! The neighborhood was quiet and lovely, and it was very easy to get to the main attractions from the hotel.

We really enjoyed our breakfasts there. The ryokan knew to change up our breakfast menu everyday. We did not enjoy the kaiseki dinner here since we thought it was over-priced for the kind of food served. We came during Sakura season which may have inflated the prices for everything.

The location is perfect. You are in the heart of Kyoto. You can just step out and wander the small streets, cafes and dessert shops nearby.
The included breakfast was pretty average, I tried both the traditional one and some strange western one on the two days I was here. There are so many restaurants nearby that I would recommend eating and exploring outside the hotel. Nishiki market is is just 7 mins walk away and is such a lovely experience, even though it is touristy I just loved it, there's lots of local snacks to explore.

A value for money ryokan in expensive Kyoto. Service is excellent, the staff even gave us a paper with tomorrow’s weather report, they even polished our shoes for us! Food was also excellent and served in the room hence giving us an authentic Japanese ryokan experience , and room was big even for two adults and one five year old child. Location is fantastic, literally 2-3 minutes walk to Nishiki market and another 5 minutes to the main shopping street. Highly recommended!

The customer service was excellent, I wish check in time was available sooner. The location was perfect, walkable to many things. There are restaurants nearby and the train is close by. My only complain would be that I had a non smoking room but my toilet room smelled a lot like cigarettes - the toilet room is separated from shower room, located on opposite side of room. I’m not sure if it was because perhaps there was a smoking room on the other side of it. Aside from that I enjoyed my stay.

we went to the hotel earlier and wasn't able to check in until 4pm. however, they gladly took our bags into storage and told us that it will be in our room after 4pm. our booking included dinner and they were extremely accommodating when i informed them that we have someone who has allergies (despite the limited communication, it was a success!) the room is a beautiful japanese room with a modern toilet and bathroom. the bed is done after dinner and they even gave us a little crane to wish us a good night sleep! breakfast was a full blown jap style breakfast in the banquet hall (although each room is seated in individual tables) and delicious. theyeven provide coffee at the lounge area after your meal. checking out was fun with them escorting us all the way to the entrance of the ryokan and holding up a banner to wish us farewell. it is definitely a one of a kind experience

Traditional ryokan experience

The location is around 10 minutes walk from the subway station, and is near to the shopping district. We like the ambiance of this place and the staff are generally warm to us. It is well kept and has a big public bath with great amenities. The breakfast was really good. The only downside is the late check in time, at 4PM. We made a mistake of arriving too early and the hotel could not provide shower facilities for us to refresh ourselves (As we took a overnight bus from Tokyo).
Otherwise, it was a great ryokan experience for us.

Authentic Japanese experience in the old capital

We wanted an authentic Japanese ryokan experience and this hotel provided that with a traditional tatami mats and bedding along with an area for tea ceremony. Hotel staff were extremely polite and helpful and genuinely wanted to make sure guests had a great stay. The hotel is walking distance to the Nishiki market and other restaurant and bar areas. It is also a two block walk to the metro station and close to bus routes so it was easy to reach any part of Kyoto for sightseeing.

Good location in central Kyoto, only about 1,000 yen to take a taxi there from Kyoto Station. Room and private bath were very clean and spotless. Our rate included kaiseki dinner and breakfast which was great experience. The staff were very hospitable, friendly and helpful. Communication with staff is not an issue for they speak sufficient English. Tatami beds were very comfortable. Will stay there again when I re-visit Kyoto.

Great experience - the rooms are what we were expecting - traditional Japanese at a ryokan in the sense that your bed is made after dinner (some ladies come into your room and remove the futons and duvet from a closet) and set up your bed on the tatami floors. You can choose to include breakfast and dinner in your rate - and both are amazing experiences. The food was very good, although quite different and sometimes strange for our palates. The service is excellent - everyone at the hotel was very helpful and very nice.

We are very impressed by the warm welcome with nice green tea and snack, lovely napkins . English and Mandarin speaking staff are there to serve.
Extremely impressed by the cleanliness in the room, especially our private bath and toilet.
Lovely daily replenishment of our personal towels and toiletries with very nicely packages. We love this tiny accessories so much and even bring back home.
Nice and yummy breakfast and dinner, full tummy. Cannot imagine they arranged dedicated table at the breakfast venue with your number clearly displayed.
Definitely will recommend this nice ryokan to anyone who like to visit Kyoto - convenient location near the main Kyoto JR station and shopping streets.....excellent service and food.
Really value for money - 6-star service but only pay for 4 star fee.

Amazing experience all around

This was the best hotel we stayed at in Japan. The service was amazing! You get yukatas in your room and nice gift bags. There is a hot bath downstairs: even though it is not an onsen-- it is very pleasant and relaxing after the day of seeing the sights. Walking distance to downtown and all the shopping as well as to the Gion district. Very close to the subway line and 2 stops from Kyoto station. Highly recommend: a great experience! The hotel staff is absolutely perfect! They even helped me to tie an obi for my yukata when I was planning a night out in my newly acquired outfit! Any questions we had --they always were extremely helpful!

If you are looking for a nice, traditional Japanese hotel (that means you don't mind sleeping on the floor on a Shiki futon) this is a great choice! The hotel is in very good condition, in a location central to most tourist activities, and the service is superb. I travel a lot so I am quite critical in my reviews, but I would definitely recommend this hotel. The only caveat is if you have a problem with sleeping on a hard surface, traditional Japanese style hotels in general won't be for you. For us, while we wouldn't want to give up our pillow top mattress for a futon, it was part of the experience.

Was a little hesitant at first seeing how nice the photos are on their official website. They are actually real!!
Room was clean, massive and loaded with toiletries and Yakuta ready. Futon beds were comfortable and staffs were very friendly and helpful.
In particular, staffs really went outta their way to help. Helped us find doctors, even try to get someone to take us there, offered umbrella to take to Osaka coz it's raining, called taxi and recommended trains to Osaka. The experience was great and really highlighted how friendly the Kyoto community is.

This was a gem of a find! The owners of the hotel are the sweetest people you'll ever meet (when we left, they heald up a goodbye banner as the cab drove off!). Were very flexible with keeping our luggage while we toured Kyoto. Offered great snacks and parting gifts. The hotel room itself was amazing! A great mix of modern and traditional ryokkan. The location was great too and offered a bit of the local restaurants, which my friends and I loved. Only 10 mins max drive from the Kyoto train station. A walk to main shopping areas. Would HIGHLY recommend!

Fantastic hotel and location

We only stayed 2 nights with our kids and wished it was longer. We all loved the friendly staffs who were very helpful and spoke understandable english with big smiles at all times. The Japanese futton beds were clean and comfy. Our room had Japanese tatami dinning table with green tea and traditional snacks on it everyday. The room for 4 of us was amazingly huge and very clean. Location near train station, only 1 block from traditional market, cafes and big shops. We chose this hotel because of the excellent reviews from previous guests. We would definitely come again.

Brilliant service - great value for money

Our stay in the ryokan is absolutely fantastic from the moment we stepped into it. They asked us to sit at the lounge to do the check-in and brought us refreshing welcome drinks and snacks immediately. The staff showed us the room and explained each of the things to us. We have not reserved dinner with them, but the staff recommended an excellent authentic Japanese restaurant just across the road. The two of us stayed in a quadruple room - it is very spacious for 2 persons and good enough for 4. The room is very clean and comfortable. In the morning, we had a lovely breakfast and again attended by friendly and helpful staff. When we left the hotel, they not only walked us to the front door, they even have a farewell banner for us! Staff speak good English and you could feel that they love what they do. This is the best experience I have with hotels (and I have stayed in plenty) - I would definitely stay with them again when I am in Kyoto.

Perfect location and exquisite servive

First of all, this review is authentic. Location: nice and easily accessible, close to multiple interesting spots and metro and cafes/restaurants (about 5 min. walk from Karasumaoike station) Cleanliness: very clean Service: 5 star service and free Matcha tea when checking in (in real Matcha bowls), staff is extremely polite and useful Con: no wifi in the room, only in the lobby (but eh, it is a Ryokan!)

Good traditional ryokan hotel experience well located in Kyoto

First, this hotel was a traditional ryokan type experience. Sleep on futon on tatami mats, room had a seperate chamber with sliding paper doors, and many little extras tea, treats, safe, robes to wear in the hotel, It also had modern conveniences such as TV and small but complete bathroom. You do have to take your shoes off but slippers are provided (just too small for me in size 14 shoes). The hotel has a large bath in the basement and is well located within walking distance of Shijo Castle, the Gion District, and the major covered shopping arcade. The staff goes out of their way to welcome its guests both on arrival and departure. If I ever return to Kyoto, I'd love to stay here again.

Great vocation in Kyoto

It wa our first expirience of Japan - we liked it very much!!!
The room is very nice, it is a public buth in the hotel - also vey nice to have a bath after long day.

we also recommend to book the room, including brekfast - very unusual, but nice traditional meal.

Outstanding Ryokan to experience Kyoto

Both my wife and I stayed at Matsui Ryokan for five nights during a recent Kyoto, Japan vacation. The hotel is centrally located and conveinient for sightseeing. The staff was both friendly and gracious, going out of their way to provide excellent service. Our room was a traditional Japanese room (i.e. tatami flooring, futon bedding); however the bath was Western. both were clean and well-maintained. Highly recomended!

A Ryokan-Style Hotel Worth Trying

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Matsui Ryokan-Style hotel for 1 night in April 2009. During the rest of our time in Kyoto, we stayed at a nice western style hotel, but decided to try the Ryokan experience for one night. We were glad we did. Staying in the traditional tatami mat room and sleeping on the futon on the floor was an interesting traditional Japanese experience. Sleeping on the futon was OK--not uncomfortable, but certainly as comfortable as most western beds--but again, it was fine. Also, because this was a Ryokan style hotel, as opposed to a full-on traditional Ryokan, the Ryokan experience really started at the door to the room as opposed to the door to the hotel, which was optimal for us. We didn't want to have to take our shoes off just to walk into the hotel and we sure didn't want to use a giant shared bath area. Our room had its own bathroom. However, our only complaint was that it was tiny. The faucet for the shower was literally the same as the faucet for the sink, so you had to move a lever to change whether water comes out in the sink or the shower. The room was clean and the staff was OK. The front desk people spoke good English and were very helpful, but the maid they had show us our room and try to explain everything in the room didn't speak a lick of English. Anyhow, we're not jumping up and down about the hotel, but overall we had a good experience and are glad we tried it for that night.

Could have found better...

Very friendly and most helpful staff. English was reasonable. The room was basic, probably a bit too gimmicky, however, the en-suite was a complete let down. The en-suite was far too cramped! On the plus, the hotel was ideally placed to tour around Kyoto.
