Piece Hostel Sanjo blew away my expectations to say the least. The beds are clean and comfortable, the common area is a great place to relax and meet people, and the facilities (both east and west) are aesthetic with lots of accommodation. On top of that, the staff are very friendly and don’t shy away from helping travellers. Would highly recommend.

Our stay at Piece hostel was wonderful! The rooms were very comfortable and spacious, the staff was great and the location was right next to the market making for lots of dining options and things to do. The only thing I’d advise is to bring ear plugs- the walls are quite thin and with it being a hostel people are up all hours of the night being quite loud. Otherwise a perfect experience!

We loved our stay! There’s lots of transport options and many areas and sites within walking distance. You are close enough to all the buzz but far away enough that it’s still quiet. The staff were helpful when needed, there were great facilities and it’s all clean and spacious compared to similar stays elsewhere. Would definitely stay here again!

I got the double room, and it felt just like a nice hotel room. The installations are kept very clean, they provide slippers, towels, and pillows just outside the door if you need them.

The downstairs area it's really nice. They sell lots of different drinks and some food too.

It is very conveniently located by all the major shopping and dining areas in sanjo, but just far away enough that it isn't noisy at all.

The private room with bunk bed was extremely comfortable and the bed was much wider than a single. The private bathroom was very convenient. The breakfast was good with western and Asian options. All of the staff was very easy to communicate with and they were super nice. They serve a pretty great free breakfast which included rice, hard boiled eggs, Japanese pickles, and an assortment of breads. The facilities are super clean and it is located in a great spot to explore Kyoto. There are also a ton of great food spots within walking distance. Would definitely stay here again if I came back to Kyoto.

Quiet trendy street. Great place to meet others

We stayed here four nights. Not much around at night but if you go walking you might fine local bars that open till 4am.
Hostel itself was great, there are lifts and stairs. Common area is open and great to meet others or just to chill and have a cuppa. Breakfast is bread or crossaint with butter or jam, or rice or something curry - everyday is slightly different.

Great hostel! We had a private room with ensuite bathroom and it was everything we needed. Perfect location - walkable for a lot of shrines/temples/food markets/bars/restaurants. Also within a 10 minute walk to the train station. There's a coffee shop called Sentido nearby, which is open from 8am that was the first good coffee I'd had in a while! The free wifi is obviously very helpful and the reception staff all spoke English well. Would definitely stay here again, such good value for money in a perfect location!

We stayed in a double room which was small but had everything you needed and expected for this price. Bed was really comfortable and quiet. Breakfast much better than expected and kept us going all day. Clean showers and we never had to wait for one to be free. Nice communal areas to sit in and friendly staff make this a perfect choice to explore Kyoto from. We would definitely stay here again.

The only thing that would make this hostel better, is a more lively atmosphere especially at night. Maybe hosting social things some nights for guests to mingle. Wish it was better, but it was still good

I was stressed out when my luggage lock combination was changed by an unknown prankster on April 1st and 2nd while it was in the care of the hostel staff. It only stopped after I placed a note at my luggage telling the prankster to do something better with their time. Guess I will never know who did it. Otherwise, this hostel was great. The staff and management were attentive and took my feedback seriously. They also helped me out a number of times. Just a few lapses which make me unable to award this a full score. It was still a good stay, I just wish it was better.

Breakfast is mostly carbohydrates (bread, rice, miso soup) but very helpful for the long walking trips in Kyoto.

The location is very good for the Nishiki market and Takashimaya (which happened to have Pokemon Centre Kyoto not too long ago), but a little inconvenient if you want direct access to Kyoto station.

It is a top notch hostel at good value. However, it is at least 3-4 streets away (abt 10-15 minutes walk) from train station. This can be a problem if you have heavy luggage. We stayed in a family room. The sink's tap water is very cold.

The place just got renovated with modern design. Everything is new and clean. It is right next to the shopping Sanjo Dori. It's 10 to 15 minutes walk from Karasumaoike subway station or 5 to 10 minutes walk from Kyotoshiyakusho-Mae subway station.

Head and shoulders above all other hostels

Really amazing value for money. My (double) room was comfortable and spacious, the shared facilities are extremely clean, and the complimentary breakfast is pretty strong too (toast, rice dishes, and pastries). The location is outstandingly close to all the Kyoto action - pretty much everything is in walking distance.

They have around 12 shower cubicles, and I never had to wait to wash, even at 9 am. The only minor gripe is that the showers operate on a system whereby you press the lever to activate the water, and then it stops after 10 seconds if you don't press it again. However, I accept that this there to prevent people from hogging the showers for ages.

All in all, fantastic - would definitely stay there again.

Perfect upscale hostel in Gion/Sanjo area!

This was a great, new hostel that had a very nice atmosphere and definitely felt much classier than other hostels we've stayed at before. The staff was very accommodating and friendly! Our double room didn't have a bathroom, so it was a little cheaper, but it had a sink and mirror, blow dryer, and nice comfortable bed. We loved having A/C in the room, but felt the other common areas were a bit too hot. In general, the hostel was well designed and has a nice, open feel to it. There was construction going on so it was a little loud at times and the only other thing we didn't like was the bathrooms all in the basement, but the size of the shower rooms and privacy was great. We have stayed at Piece Hostel Kyoto and would highly recommend both to any visitor!!

Amazing hostel for a reasonable price.

Piece Hostel Sanjo was a great place to stay. There was free access to wi-fi, free breakfast, clean facilities, and very helpful staff. It was in a good neighborhood, close to the markets, shopping, and subways. If you wanted to, you could walk a mile or two to get to the bigger and more well known part of the city. It was a great place to stay. I would totally come back again.

We stayed 2 weeks in Japan and this was the nicest place we stayed in. The common areas where very comfortable and spacious, so if you're planning to hangout at the hotel a bit, it's a good choice. You can bring your own food and drinks too. The hotel also had showers in the common area, very clean, with a good area to dry your hair or put your make up on before leaving. We used it when the other person in our group was napping, so we didn't have to bother them with noise and such.

Overall would recommend. The beds allowed us to slide our luggage under which was nice to get a little more space. There are too lounges and they were both very spacious and clean. Great location. There is a sushi and omakase restaurant right next to it that I highly recommend. The drier for laundry was the most expensive of all the hotels we went to in Japan (100 yen for 10 min as opposed to 100 yen for 30 min).
