Our stay at Matsui Honkan was truly unforgettable—one of the most special experiences we had in Kyoto. From the moment we arrived early to drop off our bags, the staff treated us with such kindness. We were welcomed with cool towels and paddle fans—such a thoughtful touch on a hot summer day!

When we returned to check in, we were seated in the lobby and served drinks with snacks while the staff explained everything with care—from breakfast service to the onsen. It felt more like a warm welcome than just checking in.

One of our favorite surprises? The daily giveaway gifts in cute Japanese drawstring bags. It made us smile every time and showed how much they cared about the little details.

Breakfast was a highlight—Kaiseki-style meals delivered to our room each morning, beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious. The servers were so kind and respectful—it made our mornings feel calm and special.

Our room was spacious, clean, and traditionally styled with tatami mats and a private bathroom—perfect for our family of four. We loved wearing the provided yukata and winding down in the public bath, which had separate areas for men and women.

The location is also fantastic—just steps away from shopping streets and a short walk to the Samurai & Ninja Museum.

We didn’t just stay here—we made memories. Matsui Honkan is pure Japanese hospitality, and we can’t wait to come back!

Matsui Honkan is our first experience at Ryokan. It was a fantastic stay. The staff were supper friendly. The served breakfast and dinner were not only delicious but also looked great in the presentation.
The location of the property is excellent. Nishiki Market, Kawaramachi Street, Pontocho Alley are all within minutes of walking distance.
I would recommend anyone who would like to experience a traditional Japanese Ryokan.

We found a messy, unfolded duvet thrown in the closet and a few strands of hair in the bedding. Assuming the duvet was used by the previous guest and not folded by housekeeping after guests checked out.

While it may feel like a long walk from the train station, the location is a good jumping off point for getting to the many sites around Kyoto and the rooms and service are great. Definitely recommend for anyone looking for a more traditional experience.

Good location. The hotel staff is very friendly, the service is more "personalized" feels rather than the chain hotel style. Make sure you pick the rate include breakfast and dinner; the food is good and is so much cheaper if you eat similar food at the near restaurant. I am not sure the water at hot shared bath on the basement floor is coming from onsen or not, but it does help to release some stress from a day of walking. Overall, I am happy with the stay; my recommendation is to order breakfast and dinner if you are staying, you will get more value out from it.

The staff were so kind and welcoming. This is set up as a traditional ryokan so you will remove your shoes inside the front door of your room and sleep on a futon on the tatami mat floor. With that said it was comfortable enough that even with a bad back and hips I slept pretty well. The location is fantastic a couple blocks from Nishiki market and walking distance to Gion and its surrounding areas. My husband used the onsen and said it was great. We didn't book a dinner as we had too much on our schedule, but if our elaborate delicious breakfast was any indication of their skills I bet it would be a fantastic experience. I would stay more than one night the next time

This is a small hotel run by a friendly staff. The room we had was spacious, clean, nicely designed and decorated. It is a combination of western beds and traditional Japanese sitting area with a private bath and toilet. Its is quiet and close enough to catch various subway trains. The staff are very helpful and friendly. I will stay here again if I ever visit Kyoto again.

Great location, quiet and convenient. Be sure to get the Japanese breakfast—a once in a lifetime experience. Our boys (12 and 14) enjoyed the hotel and its amenities as much as I did. The one piece of furniture we missed was a couch—which was fine as we did want to get the authentic Japanese experience. Front desk was very helpful with restaurant recommendations and reservations. Even though one of us is vegetarian, their breakfasts and restaurant choices were still solid. Highly recommended.

Authentic Japanese - Don't Expect Western Comfort

I would recommend that before booking this hotel you know exactly what you are getting. It is an authentic, traditional Japanese hotel - with full tatami mat floors, futon beds and low, minimalist furniture. If you are expecting a western-style hotel, do not book here. It is very clean and the staff are excellent, but you may wake up with a very stiff back.

Amazing Japanese style inn. Great service and amenities. Only negatives were spotty wifi and firm floor futon bedding (still passable though, just used to a softer bed). Also not too close to train station (closest is a 12 minute walk), but only 2 blocks from Nishiki food market. In room breakfast was fantastic and convenient.

Traditional ryokan with onsen in central Kyoto

Convenient location in central Kyoto, amidst the modern buildings and near transit, but feeling very secluded. You will sleep on futons rolled out by your room attendant on the tatami mats. In the morning the attendant rolls them up and puts them away and serves you breakfast (fantastic Japanese food for the first breakfast) in your room. Enjoy the kaiseki dinner in-room for a treat. Try the onsen and soak in the hot water while looking at the beautiful stone wall with waterfall.

While the facilities were very clean and the location was great, I found the front desk staff to be a little frigid and curt, they had a very limited command of English also. The futons were a bit thin and we had to ask for more pillows. The public baths were lovely though. A nice ryokan.l but overall I have to say that I didn't feel particularly welcomed here.

I have never stayed at a Ryokan, but having stayed at Matsui Honkan, I would definitely do it again the next time I am in Japan. The Ryokan is beautiful and conveniently located near downtown Kyoto. I stayed in a Japanese style room equipped with tatami mats and the whole traditional fitting. It really made me feel as if I was staying in a room in an older Japan era. The bath in the basement is beautiful and very relaxing and the staff were very accommodating and friendly. I wanted to try traditional Japanese Kaiseki (which you normally have to book well ahead of time) but to my surprise, not only did they try to find places for me, one of the hotel staff ran out to a local kaiseki restaurant to ask in person and the restaurant managed to accomodate me when they were fully booked. I would highly recommend this place!

We first stayed at the Matsui Honkan in 2008, and enjoyed it so much that we made sure to come back on our trip to Kyoto this year. The service is courteous and quick, the food _wonderful_, and the hot baths very comfortable. The staff knew that it was our anniversary, and gave us a gift when we arrived. We'll definitely go back again.

We stayed in the Japanese Room, Private Bathroom (For 2 Guests) and upon entering the level of service from the hotel staff was amazing!
The room itself was quite large considering how other Japanese hotels were much smaller, felt good to have more room to breath and relax.
The public bath that is at the bottom floor of the hotel was great.
The only regret is that we only stayed one night, it would have been ideal to stay here longer and enjoy Kyoto more.

Beautiful ryokan in the heart of Kyoto

We stayed here for one night only in a Japanese style room to experience traditional Japanese culture. After many hours of searching, we settled on this ryokan based on a number of good reviews and we were not disappointed in the slightest.
We dropped our luggage in the morning and returned at check-in time. We had the keiseki set dinner and Japanese style breakfast in the morning; on both occasions the food was outstanding and plentiful. Certainly some of the best meals we had enjoyed during our two-week tour of Japan.
The Japanese bathhouse situated in the basement was an amazing experience as well.
The staff were very welcoming and accommodating.
We look forward to staying here again on our next visit in Kyoto!!

Fantastic welcome with drinks from very attentitive and friendly English speaking staff. The room was huge and very clean, a very pleasant experience for our first stay at a traditional Ryokan and we would highly recommend to any travellers to Kyoto. Don't miss the breakfast in your room, it's beautifully presented and explained. The location is also perfect and close to the shops. Only let down is Japan's late check-in, but this is normal everywhere, so expect to leave your bags, see some sights and then check-in later with your bags already in the room. An unforgettable lifetime memory to treasure :)

A bit of a walk from the subway and can be tricky to find on the first day.
Stayed at the top floor rooms which provided us breakfast in room every morning as well as green tea upon arrival checkin.
Room was lovely with its own mini garden and also own bathroom and toilet which was great as some nights we were too tired to venture downstairs to the public bath.

The lady that served us breakfast took great care to explain each dish every morning and was very attentive.
Room was spacious and clean with a bar fridge provided. Not sure about the other floors but it seems the top floor rooms are nicely designed and quite large. Sleeping on Futons on the tatami mats was comfy and always welcome after a day of trekking around the sights in Kyoto.
The personal send off's when you depart is cute and a nice touch to an enjoyable stay.

Would definitely stay again on my next visit to Kyoto.

This was the perfect Japanese-style hotel or Ryokan! I have stayed at very luxious Ryokans before but this is by far more suitable and very modern for people targeted in the 20-50s. Incredibly nice service, extremely clean rooms and more amenities you can think of, recently renovated/built and looks almost brand new; will definitely stay again next time!

It's a great Japanese style hotel. It's very clean, staffs are nice, and right next to a very popular shopping area. But you can't check in till 4pm (they will definitely let you wait till 4pm), and have to check out by 10 am. I think this is not very convenient .

Wonderful initiation to a ryokan

My family just returned from a wonderful initiation into the ryokan experience. On our first visit to Japan we decided to book a ryokan for one night preceding our hotel stay in Kyoto. Our criteria were price range, good reviews and proximity to our hotel. We couldn’t have made a better choice. We arrived early and the staff happily kept our bags till the 4 pm check in time. We spent that time walking in the nearby fascinating Nishki Food Market and the shopping promenades. Upon our return we were served green tea and cookies. In spite of limited English the staff was very friendly. The rooms and furnishings were tastefully decorated and the futons were comfortable. There were modern shower and lavoratory rooms in the entry area which were screened off from the eating/sleeping space. The kimonos, which were attractive and well-made, were worn down to the communal bath and to sleep. The bath and companion washing areas were a delight and we didn’t end up sharing them with anyone. Due to my daughters dietary restrictions we did not eat any meals in the ryokan but instead bought breakfast in the nearby grocery and stored it overnight in the refrigerator in the room. We all enjoyed this ryokan experience, felt it was worth the expense, and recommend the Matsui Honkon Ryokan.

They held a banner up saying "thank you" as we got into the taxi to leave. Right upto the end this Ryokan expemplified everything that one expects when one hears of Japanese service. the room was clean and specious, the breakfast great and the walking distance to Gion given that it was Gion matsuri was convenient. Next time I am in Kyoto, I know where I will stay.

Es un ryokan muy cómodo. cerca del centro pero en un lugar con muy tranquilo. se puede llegar caminando al centro sin problema. El onsen está muy limpio. las habitaciones son grandes y cómodas (para el estándar japonés). El personal, si no tienes ningún problema, son muy amables, pero nosotros tuvimos un problema en la reserva. En nuestra reserva ponía una cosa y en la suya otra y fueron bastante groseros, casi como insinuando que nos queríamos colar. Muy mala experiencia en ese aspecto. Cuando se dieron cuenta de que no tenían razón, no hubo ni un lo siento, ni una disculpa. Pero por lo demás, el ryokan está muy bien.

Probably one of my best hospitality experiences ever. The service was excellent and the room was bigger than I thought, as well as very clean. They prepared some small care packages for every guest of our group with hygiene and care products, which i thought very thoughtful. Our room had extra blankets and pillows, which was practical. The breakfast is beyond amazing - as beautiful as it is delicious. The only thing is regret is that although we turned off the heating system, the room was still very hot and dry during the night (outside was cold), to the point that we had trouble sleeping.

Hotel staff was lovely and friendly. Thank you very much. Food was brilliant. Hot bathroom in the basement used to refresh and relax. Great location to discover Kyoto. We were totally happy for such fantastic experience.

房間大，整潔，早晚餐豐富，職員十分有禮，住了兩個晩上，非常享受。唯一溫泉比較少，幸好每次也不超過4 人；另外比較適合自駕人士，但旅館沒有停車場，要泊在隔離的停車場， JPY1900 24 小時，划算。

施設自体はそこまで大きくなく、温泉もこじんまりとしたものでした。朝夕の食事付きプランを利用いたしましたが、全体的に少しお値段は高く感じました。
しかし、立地等を考えると仕方がないようにも思えました。
何よりもスタッフの方々のご対応が非常に良く、浴衣に関することで少しトラブルがありましたが早急にご対応していただけました。
また忘れ物をし後日お電話をさせていただいた際も、非常にスムーズなご対応で郵送にて送っていただけました。
これらのサービスの丁寧さを考えるとお値段も妥当ではないかと感じることができました。
とても楽しい旅行となりました。ありがとうございました。

荷物だけ預かって頂き、チェックイン時間まで外出する予定でしたが、暑さで断念しロビーで休ませていただきました。
かなり早い時間に到着しましたが、スタッフの皆様にお気遣い頂き、大変快適に過ごすことができました。

おもてなしの心から来る細やかな気遣いが随所にあらわれており、大変満足の滞在となりました。
施設は清潔でお部屋も綺麗、中には分かりやすい説明書きや、小物置き、延長コードなど痒いところに手の届くアイテムがしっかり置かれてました。
また小さな子供を連れての滞在でしたが、事前に子供メニューの確認や子供の椅子、おむつポットの手配なども確認させていただき、安心して泊まることができました。
お迎えお見送りも常に暖かく、またぜひ泊まりたいと思わせてくれるお宿でした。ご飯もとてもおいしかったです！
