The location is very good right at the coast line but the road in between the hotel and the beach is pretty busy so even though you have a sea view room as we had you will be able to enjoy the sound of the sea only during night hours starting from around midnight till around 5 am. The staff is very friendly and will park your vehicle serving as a valet parking. The breakfast is also very good especially bread such as bruschetta. Even though the hotel itself is not new and you can see its age in some details the rooms are very clean and comfortable as well as the cleaning service is working well! Overall I would recommend staying at this hotel!

The hotel is nice and the breakfast was good. But they don’t provide complimentary coffee and tea in the rooms, they are 4 star hotel that should be expected. Even in the 3 star hotels they provide that and free water, here they made you pay. The wi-fi was terrible and the issue was not fixed. They made you prepay for the room that’s the first time I ever hear about it. Very strange hotel experience.

Overall ok. I would stay here again. Great location. Air conditioning wasn’t working properly and went on for 2minutes then off continuously. Ear plugs did the trick. Door lock broken, safe inoperable. Excellent maid service. Pool was great. Restaurant ok. I think I just ordered the wrong thing.

Beautiful place by ocean

The view of the sunrise over the ocean was gorgeous from my room! The breakfast was so delicious- the apricot tart-wow! The bed was comfy, lots of pillows, black out curtains, very friendly desk personnel- free shuttle to train in morning. Only wish I had gotten a train from the train to the hotel the night before. But beware, it is an hour from Genoa by train and over two hours from Portofine.

No longer “grand” - pictures are deceiving.

Hotel and area photos are from several years ago when all the palm trees were in their glory. Hotel itself was surely “grand” at some time, but has definitely declined. Our room faced the ocean, was small but ok. The bathroom was beyond small. Knees touched the side of shower when on the toilet. (This may not be the same in other rooms). Breakfast buffet was poor, disorganized and staff unenthusiastic.

Warm welcome for non Italian speaking Australian guests. Brilliant views from our room. Much better than the photos. Room very clean and everything in good condition. Nice linen and towels. Very nice €20 three course set dinner menu. Would happily return and recommend to friends.

Lovely grand old hotel on the surface. Staff were friendly and helpful most of the time. Very clean, nice large bathroom and comfy bed. However, there were a couple of things which would have really improved my stay at the hotel. We booked a superior double room. There was nothing superior about this room, I would describe it as basic. There was no kettle or coffee machine in the room, no complimentary bottles of water. The plug sockets did not fit our European plug adaptors. We could only charge our phones in the sockets in the dining room on the first day! We asked at the desk on the first evening and staff could only suggest we try the bathroom socket to charge our phones? This did not work. I couldn’t use my hair straighteners in the morning and went to ask at the desk for advice on where I could buy an adaptor. This time a different receptionist gave me an adaptor which she instantly produced from behind the desk! A sign for guests in the room advising guests to ask if they needed an adaptor would be useful. Our visit was the last week in October which is the end of the season but there was no outside space available to sit anywhere at the hotel. There are no balconies or terraces with rooms and the pool area was closed off. The weather was mild and sunny and I asked if there was anywhere I could sit and relax outside. The hotel beach was closed. Arenzano is a lovely quiet relaxing place but I would not stay at this hotel again.

The room was a little snaller than expected but it had a comfortsble double bed and everything I needed. I travel onbusiness frequently and am not easily impressed. I highly recommend the Grand Hotel

Everything great, except small things - like only one coffee machine for breakfast for quite a number of guests, no tops for tea pots - gets cold quicker - but these are minor. Our evening dinner was OK-ish. However, overall a good stay. Nice location.

Pro’s - The restaurant is currently staffed by a Michelin star chef. Dinner was outstanding. By far the best meal we have had in our travels through Europe. Staff easy going, friendly and helpfull. Swimming pool is nice with full bar service available. Room is older styled, but functional, spaceous & clean.
Con’s - None regarding the hotel. The “free to public” beach across the road is rather small, with most of the beach being taken up by private beach club which was impossible to enter. As Australians we just don’t understand why private beaches are allowed.

Wonderful stay

We hat a wonderful stay at the hotel. The hotel is in the city center and it's only a few steps to the shops and restaurants. They offer umbrellas and sun chairs at a private beach in a bay 5 mins walking distance from the hotel. Unfortunately you hear traffic noise from the street in front of the hotel if you want to sleep with open windows.

Older hotel but well maintained, shows the signs of old glory. Excellent breakfast, food was really fresh and lots of healthy options. Staff on the most part was very helpful. The views from our room were tremendous. Had dinner in the hotel once, service was excellent but food was just okay. Lots of excellent food options including delicious thin crust pizza in the area.
Some of the negatives are the lack of private beach next to the hotel. They charged us extra for it to drive us to the beach which was rocky and dirty and definitely not as nice as the public beach right in front of the hotel. After 2 days there we just stayed on the public beach and had a wonderful time there.
P.S. Shower needs to be changed.

Would stay there again.

The hotel was clean, but the first thing was that reception staff took copies of our IDs (which is unnecessary) hidden in the other room (after asking not to do this and they said they will only use our dates of birth). The room was old style and a old bathroom where some renewal is needed. The internet did not work. There was no extractor in the bathroom. No shampoo and hair conditioner (just the generic body shampoo). We also left early before breakfast time so I asked the reception (on the evening before) if we could get something arranged. The lady ensured me that this is absolutely fine and they will get some food packed for us to take with us. Once I went down, the gentleman in the reception was not aware of anything. But at least a lady it the breakfast room let me took whatever I want). Also, I did have to pay 36€ as city tax which came as surprise at the time of check out, which looks v high for 2 nights (3 persons). In general, from outside the hotel looked much better than from inside. I would not give 4 stars for it. I would also not get back to the same hotel next time

The hotel is in a good location between town and beach(s) with many restaurants to choose from within easy reach. Staff were generally very friendly and helpful! Comfortable clean rooms. We spent most of our days at the beach but really enjoyed having convenient access to the pool for a quick dip before preparing for dinner.
No hassle having my electric (ev) charged during our stay.
Breakfast was very good with a large and tasty choice. I especially enjoyed being able to boil eggs myself to my own exact timing.
All in all our needs were met for a very romantic weekend

It once was grand, it still is the largest and most imposing building in Arenzano. Right on the sea front at the eastern end of the town. Fine architecture typical of the region but alas suffering from years of inflation, recession and lack of investment it shows signs of neglect. It has its own pool with bar in a marquee. It does not have its own beach. If you go across the very busy road to the beach you will fork out €34 a day for a changing cabin, 2 loungers and a parasol. A rip off. The pool looks clean and the lifeguard washes out the toilets, but the loo seat is cracked and broken, there are weeds growing out of the pool drains. The sun loungers are unbearably uncomfortable and the same standard design everywhere. The female staff are lovely and friendly the men all seem to wish they were elsewhere, grumpy, doer and unhelpful. The shuttle service to the airport will set you back €60 when the train 10 minutes away costs €3.60 each.

Pros and cons!

The hotel looks gorgeous from the outside. The rooms are very clean and comfortable though a little dated but still holds that charm. The walls are paper thin so be warned. Unfortunately some of the staff weren’t great. Although the lady checking us in was friendly and polite she stopped in the middle of checking us in to our 3 rooms and started checking another customer in who turned up after us. Because of this it took us while longer to check in and then she forgot to give us the room keys. The breakfast staff were terrible. One lady even picked up my coffee and moved it while I was in the middle of putting milk in lol. She also shoved another member of our party out the way and started having a go at another for not using a saucer. The breakfast was ok but so spread out with plates out the way and not with food it took a while to find eveything. It was like they just slap anything down where there was a space. The bananas where black so I didn’t bother with much fruit. All in all the hotel served its purpose and it was reasonably nice but it wasn’t nice enough to return to I’m afraid.

Husband and I had 4 night's to visit Genoa and surrounding area for his 50th birthday. Hotel is well situated near the sea. We were on the 4 floor which is elevator for 3 floors up then stairs for last floor. Room was clean and pleasant. Sea view was impressive. Will say can hear adjoining bathrooms ie toilet flushing and water running which was at the head of our bed. Luckily we are heavy sleepers so didn't bother us to much. Breakfast was reasonable. Plenty of fruit, salad, yoghurt, juice, coffee. Hot selection was cold... So avoid that. Pastries and bread selection was good. And also had a pigeon wandering around dining room every morning. Don't think he was staff member...

Nice hotel overall. €15 per day to park. Only real gripe is walls very thin and you can hear everything going on in next door bathroom - and I mean everything!

The hotel itself is beautiful picture perfect from the outside. The rooms are nice slightly dated and no where near as big as the photos - we booked a superior room be careful of the photos you don’t get the room you actually book - I went to ask to change as it wasn’t the room in the photo I was told they put photos on to look nice like the flowers on the photos but the flowers aren’t there on your stay - don’t agree wuth this but was told they were full and they may have different room in 2 days - was never contacted or mentioned again - customer service is not great - staff can be arrogant at times - breakfast is cleared before the finish time - not much hot food choices and I found it hard to find something eatable - and yogurt was out of date by a week - they aren’t helpful and tend to huff and puff if you ask for something they have removed - to be honest if staff where more friendly and accommodating our stay would of been better - we will spend next year in another place rather than return - shame really as the staff do not do this lovely building justice.

Great location very “Grand” facade .Staff everywhere great ! Bit disappointed we were not informed bar wouldn’t be open by pool or swimming pool would be closed Tiny indoor Bar not serviced!! No tea coffee making in room ,first time in many many years of travelling round Europe have we experienced these lack of facilities in a large hotel!
We are dog lovers but wold never expect to see dogs in the dining room for breakfast and especially not
in a Michelin guide Restaurant for dinner !!
This report is the first one we have completed with a number of criticisms , however we still enjoyed our stay ,staff in particular were particularly friendly and helpful .

A wonderful hotel on the Northern Italian Coast apx. 1 1/2 hours from Monaco and thirty minutes west of Genoa. If you are flying into Milan Malpensa airport this is a 1 3/4 hour drive. The village of Arenzano is quiet and the seaside is pleasant although not a beach destination. The hotel is a five star and the food is excellent.

A classic Grand Hotel let down by traffic noise

The hotel and location were fabulous, sadly we couldn't enjoy the sea air and sound of waves as you had to keep windows tightly closed due to a noisy street running between the hotel and the beach.

This is a problem in most of the Italian and French Riviera - it's almost impossible to find a hotel not spoilt by 1960's town planning mistakes.

However, this hotel is advertising itself with a manipulated picture where the road has been removed (or it could be a turn-of-the-century black and white picture which has been coloured later). That is a mis-representation, if not outright fraudulent. I chose the hotel and a seaside room specifically because I thought it would be ON the beach, not on a busy road.

Another mis-description was that the hotel advertised the room as \"junior suite\", yet it was just a larger ordinary room. Very specious, but it was all one space, with no sofa, comfy chairs or anything that would have justified the word \"suite\".

The hotel is all right

Overall hotel was fine, but we expected better for the price we paid. It seemed to be one of the best ones in the area though.

I'll start with pros:
Gorgeous view (if you take the room with sea view); close to the beach, nice location in general, historical center of Genova 45 minutes away with the car.
Breakfast was good, it was the same every day, but they were missing waffles, sausages, bacon, instead they had good selection of pies, cheese and ham.
Rooms were clean, nice selection of essentials (but no hair conditioner!)
Nice pool.

Now the cons:
Small room, weird bathroom - we only had half a door in the shower so I had to wipe the floors with towels every time one of us took a shower - all water was on the floor.
Parking situation was a disaster - they had tiny parking space for this hotel, you were lucky to park between the trees or halfway on the boardwalk (on the side of the road), most of the times though we had to leave the car on the small driveway where each car was blocking the previous one and we would leave the car keys at the desk so the hotel personnel could move it when someone in the middle would need to leave.
Very important - they DIDN'T HAVE AN IRON - so make sure to take one with you if you're planning to stay here, I had to wear all wrinkled dresses, because I did not expect that and I didn't want to pay €8 for each dress pressing only (washing is extra).
Funny AC - it would turn off when you leave.
Overall the stay was good.

We were very upset. The first night we arrived our room had no air conditioning so I asked to move our room once they could not repair this. I was told there were no rooms to move until the following day.
I asked for a fan and was told there is none. The room was so hot 30 centigrade close to 90 farenheit. This was unacceptable and I spoke with Daniel at front desk and told him I do not want to be charged and he said ok.
When we checked out the girl at front desk told me I had to get my refund from Expedia and I told her my first part of trip hotel was made direct. She was not very nice and refused to credit me the first night.
After we moved the room was much better. Unfortunately it started out horrible. I got sick in the room.

Beachfront at a great price

My first trip to Italy's northern coast - I could not believe that such a wonderful beachfront hotel was this reasonable. The property is outstanding, the rooms bright and clean, and the staff friendly and helpful. I was planning to stay only one night, but decided to extend my trip and enjoy the Arenzano weather and hospitality for a second night.

Reception staff friendly but not the restaurant staff. Overall very disappointing catering for coach tours over other guests. The only bar was by the pool not part of main hotel and was unfriendly and unwelcoming, breakfast average, boiling water luke warm, milk curdled. Pool was a little tired. Wooden floor to restaurant was undulating so dangerous.
Lift only caters properly for half the hotel, the other half takes you to your floor but you then have to walk up about 6 steps to the rest of the rooms so no good for bag trolley.
Plenty of good restaurants in the town to choose from, but only 2 public beaches, most of lake front taken up with private beaches umbrellas and loungers crammed into a tiny space.

The hotel needs badly renovation. The wooden floor in the base floor has been detached from the concrete, and you literally was felt like walking on bubbles. Waiters didn't speak English AT ALL. Breakfast was like having breakfast in a 2 star hotel. There is no sound insulation in the rooms, we fell asleep around 3 am, after our neighbors decided to sleep. In the bathroom they had plastic cups for water... Remember in a 4 star hotel... Plastic cups... I have stayed in bad hotels in the past, but this CAN'T be 4 stars... And why Expedia is promoting it??? How people can't see what I saw there? I'm going back to Arenzano next week, BUT I'M NOT STAYING EVER AGAIN in this hotel!

Ideally situated on the edge of the town safe parking good variety at breakfast pool excellent

Language barrier can mean can be difficult getting across what you need to say some of the rooms very small more like the size of a main city hotel not a hotel on the beach

We were not impressed with the hotel,The name was Grand but it was not.
On arrival of our room,which we had to carry our cases up two flights of stairs,we found the shower doors off their runners also curtain hanging off. When we told Manager she said someone would look at it in couple days.But saying we could not use shower like that they fixed it next day,curtains was never fixed.

Great hotel and breakfast

Once you find it and can get in the parking lot, the hotel is nice. The breakfast buffet has no comparison. The food was excellent and abundant. It was a lot more than what we expected. Right accross from the beach, it is very convenient.

A nice hotel in a nice place but a little worn

The pool was nice as was the distance to the beach, the town of Arenzano is very attractive.
The hotel is showing its age a little bit, the rooms are a little worn, but clean and the floors in the restaurant are noticeably bulging.
The breakfast was not quite up to scratch, a little greasy and a little to much refined sugar and white wheat for our nordic tastes, the breakfast machines such as juice and coffee machines were also due for an upgrade

Easy on the eyes, heavy on the ears

Pretty nice getaway location. Be aware that there is no air conditioning. The breeze off the sea is delightful, but your windows must stay open, which means that the noise from the road, along with the noise of folks partying on holiday near/on the beach, all comes in as well. The parking situation is pretty ridiculous, but the staff is there to accommodate. We really enjoyed the pool, which was lovely; and the breakfast, which was fresh, well attended to, and plentiful.

Was a nice hotel 30 years ago

Plastic (disposeable) glasses in the room! (In a 4 stars hotel..). Good location, nice view, but lots of disappointing things: The walls are paper-thin, no gown for the rooms, and the elevator goes till the 3rd floor, however there are 4 floors.

The Grand at Arenazano

The Hotel is in an excellent location for the beach and town. It has extensive grounds with swimming pool. The only downside is that when we stayed the hotel had two coach parties and Breakfast was a bit hetic. I would recommend that the hotel conside a seperate breakfast room for coach groups.

Lovely older hotel with lots of character

We had a change of plans and felt very fortunate that the Grand Hotel Arenzano was able to accommodate us on short notice and with a very fair rate. It is a delightful hotel. We had a great view of the Mediterranean and it is adjacent to the garden that we were in town to visit, so very convenient. The staff is very welcoming and helpful. I would definitely recommend it and would stay there again if we returned.

Excellent hotel in an excellent location.

Firstly, Arenzano is a wonderful town. The winding hill streets are speckled with restaurants, wine bars and all the other amenities you could need. The people living there a lovely and it was a joy to be surrounded by them during our stay.
The Grand Hotel was an excellent choice. The location is perfectly situated on the beach front and it's a minute's walk in to the center of town. The hotel's pool and surrounding area was great and has it's own bar where food and drinks can be purchased.
Our room, despite being a bit outdated, had all we needed and an extremely comfy bed.
All in all, we had an excellent 7 nights at the hotel. Would highly recommend to others.

Lovely location for a day or three. We got last room and it wasn't the best but clean and bed fine. Shower not so good

Overall though the welcome was good, the pool and bar are great. The location and local restaurants are good - had the best barbecued steak i can remember. Overlooks sea.

Great for a atop off on way through rather than driving into a city centre. Good value for money

The name suggests something a lot nicer than the hotel actually is. Unfortunately, the standard of hotel is less than you find in France (we were on road trip from the French to the Italian Riviera) and so, I was hoping for a better standard of hotel. In order to get to the room, it required the lift and then a flight of stairs, so anyone with a lot of luggage, young children or not particularly mobile would have difficulty accessing this room. The view was wonderful (sea view) but the room looked tired and a little outdated but it was clean. I wouldn't stay there again, but it depends on what you're looking for...

2 nights and a nightmare check out

We arrived at this hotel in the afternoon and although I booked the room with a sea view for four days via hotels.com, the receptionist said we had park view booked and we had to pay 20 EUR extra for each day if we wanted to have a sea view room. We paid cash upfront for four days to have sea view. The hotel is ok, definitely wouldn't give it 5 stars if they didn't have a pool. The rooms are very dated, carpets are stained, wallpapers are coming off in some places. Furniture is very old and greasy. Breakfast is very \"Italian\". You are not going to get a proper English breakfast or anywhere near that. Out of hot food they only serve scrambled eggs and overcooked bacon. You have a choice of different bakery and jams. No fresh juices available. Some cheese and salami is there. Coffee is of a good quality. We had a dinner in their restaurant which was OK, but overpriced. We decided to leave after two nights, because the weather was bad. At the check out we were asked to pay for three nights, because we decided to leave after two nights instead of four which we booked. The price they asked us to pay was much higher than my quoted price when I booked the hotel. They also did not want to refund any money for 1 unused night at the sea view room. Overall, a rip off. The receptionists could hardly speak any English. They had no idea how the prices are formed. Young girls working there are very rude and irritated. I had to spend nearly 30 minutes at the check out. I managed to get my bill sorted. At the end, they all agreed that I would pay for three nights only(only stayed 2) without any sea view charges. The price I paid for two nights after all the arguments was 390 EUR. The location is beautiful and this hotel could really stand out. It is cozy and would be nice to have a weekend spent there. The management side and the overall culture of the hotel can really spoil your weekend.

I'm so used to staying in bland chain hotels that this hotel was a wonderful surprise. Right on the seafront, large room with high ceilings, just wish I had more nights there
