Just finished two weeks here with my partner on our South east Asia travels. Had an amazing time. Exactly what I expected from Koh Phangan, well away from the touristy areas.
Great beach views, great food, and welcome hospitality. Staff are an asset to this place.
We made use of the vehicle hire and taxis available. Thong Nai Pan only 15 minutes away by car/scooter or its a 2 hour hike for the brave.
Hope to visit again soon.

If you're looking to escape from it all, this is the place. Nestled under a national park, Than Sadet is perfect for swimming and Mai Pen Rai has a great restaurant on the beach and a wide variety of bungalows to choose from. Enjoy!

I loved the remote location and the staff were lovely. This is no luxury spot by any means (no hot water or ac) but this is the spot if you want to get away from it all. Glamping at its finest!

Sleep to waves crashing upon the rocks

Great for those that thrill in nature. Interesting, unique, basic, comfy, spacey beach bungalows in a gorgeous spot. Get some walking done and enjoy the waterfalls. Good thai food menu at restaurant. Would definately go again! Do take mossie repellent though!

I liked the unique location. I was hesitant when purchasing these bungalows for such a cheap price, that they wouldn't deliver on location. But they did. It truly was a bungalow on the rocks - on the rocks of the beach! Fantastic. I enjoyed every minute of my stay. Thank you so much Mai Pen Rai Bungalows. I think they are under rated and should sit at 4 stars.

If you like glamping you’ll love it here

Great location if you want to be away from it all and just chill and relax. We were in a family hut in the rocks. Tricky if you have very small children but fine for us. It’s basic but as I mentioned in the title if you like glamping you’ll love this place. The staff were lovely. Very welcoming and really appreciated it when we tried to speak a tiny bit of Thai. If we stayed longer we would think about renting a jeep to explore more of the island. We would definitely go back.

Beautiful beach

We planned to spend 10 days on this beautiful beach with our family, but unfortunately we didn't enjoy our stay as we hoped. The place describes itself as a family friendly stay, but by far it's not equipped for young children. The play area on the pictures is not function due to a fairly recent landslide and safety is not maintained anywhere really. We travelled with our 4 and 6 yrs old daughters and stayed on the family bungalow on the rocks. It is on the hill side, but we did not mind the walk, however there are no railing by the steps and the drop straight to the sea is massive. This caused a fair amount of tension a we were scared to let the kids walk alone in the dark and they found these restrictions frustrating. The same stands in the bungalow. The upper sleeping area - supposetly for the kids with two single bed - completely unsafe for kids if windows left open as the windows are low and they can easily fall out. As there is no a/c this area with closed windows is unbearable due to the heat even in the night. We found the restaurant on the beach very poor quality and used mainly the hill top restaurant, which had the most amazing views and fantastic food. Still, two restaurants are very limited options if planning to stay longer, especially that no opportunity to buy snacks or ice-cream for kids anywhere. These wouldn't play an issue if we travel as a couple, but with young kids they become important. There is poor wifi everywhere here, but we didn't mind that.

This place is paradise on earth, perfect beach! Stayed at the family bungalows on the rocks, beautiful location and view. Restaurants are good! Don't stay here if you're not physically fit, it's a lot of climbing steep stairs and literally over and through rocks. Off the beaten path , secluded, but you can arrange for taxi to just about anywhere. Electricity gets turned off at certain times and no hot water, so be prepared for that, also wifi is almost non existent , even at restaurants. Sleep under mosquito nets for sure as the bungalows are easily access to outside critters, you might get a bat, gecko, or anything else that fits through the crevices.definitely a unique experience, but beautiful one.

Mai pen rai bungalows Koh Phangan

A very remote part of Phangan and far away from the bustle of Thong Sala. We stayed 4 nights but would recommend staying for fewer unless you use it as a base for exploring the island (by boat). Have to rent scooters in town and the taxis are expensive. The food was ok in the two restaurants. Stunning location and an adventurous trek to the hillside bungalows!

Seclusion!!!

Boy, when I read the description of the beautiful secluded beach front bungalows I was excited. But, you have no idea what seclusion is until you are actually in it!!! There are only two restaurants on the resort, and my friend busted her knee on a rock trying to climb the mountain necessary to ascend in pitch slippery terror for the second. The first night I even had a slight panic attack. But by day three, I was really enjoying it. It was nice to slow down. But please, be mentally prepared. To take a trip to the town you have to pay to get there and back at specific times which annoyed us. But, hey, different strokes...

Perfect Getaway

I'm an outdoors-y, rural type stuck in the city for work. This was the perfect place to get away from everything. It takes some time to get there but that's what makes it worth it. They offer taxi services and jeep/bike rentals. I had a room on the rocks with a great view and space away from other travelers. There's four restaurants available, but the main one is the best. Wonderful, friendly staff who care about their guests. The beach is pebbly but still pleasant, and there are lots of rocks to climb and explore. You can even hike up the river to see some waterfalls. Beautiful place for catching sunrises. And at night you can actually see the stars! Would definitely come again!

Great location but VERY basic accommodation

The bungalows are on a spectacular beach which is seriously off the beaten track (although the road is being upgraded at the moment, and when it's tarred this might change a bit) and I really liked that. But, our bungalow, which was a family 'on the rocks' bungalow was disappointing. There was no hot water and the shower head was a tiny little thing on the end of a hose. I think the bungalows on the beach itself do have hot water, and that would make a big difference (for me). Also, the walk to our bungalow was quite precarious, and when it's high tide you really have to hang onto your kids tightly to make it home in one piece. The restaurant above the 'on the rocks' bungalows, called Plaa's, was a highlight. Great food and friendly service.

It is an amazing location and the staff are friendly, the restaurant is really affordable and the food is very nice, the only low for us was you do not have aircon (which we knew) but at 3 am they switch off the electricity and it only comes back on again at 10 am , it was very hot and uncomfortable, other than that if you want a rustic private beach this is it .

Idyllic - relaxation at its best!

This has been one of the highlights of all the places visited during my travels all over the world. I loved it! Far from the maddening crowd in idyllic surroundings, close to nature, with the sea at your doorstep, the sound of the waves when you go to sleep and to wake you up - total relaxation. We stayed in a bungalow right on the beach, had our cups of tea on the porch in the mornings and our also our night caps before bed. Our days were spent lazing around on the beach, dipping into the ocean at will and enjoying lovely fruit platters and fruit shakes smilingly provided by the exceptional staff, for whom nothing was too much to ask for. A BIG SPECIAL thank you to Pen and her lovely team. The bungalow is fairly basic but spacious, comfortable and providing everything one needs - unpretentious and refreshing after the characterless, over the top supposedly 5* hotels of Bangkok. There were three restaurants to choose from, one being on a hilltop with spectacular views, and the food always to an excellent standard and excellent value for money. Our stay was indeed something special and memorable and we are sure to return in the near future, only this time for longer. Highly recommended to the discerning traveler who is looking for something real and different.

Some kind of Paradise

Half way through my Thailand trip I had planned a couple of days at Mai Pen Rai on Koh Phangan. It's arrestingly stunning.

Lets be honest- the rooms are comfortable, but it's what we'd call rustic. No hot water, and scheduled electrical black outs. But that aside.

the staff are wonderful, the food is amazing, the view is spectacular. It's quiet, it's romantic, it's fun and it's an adventure all at once. I can't wait to go back again!

My favorite stay in Thailand.

Love this place. Very quite. Huge room on the river. Make sure to bring cash, no ATM anywhere. Huge geckos. Beautiful views. Huge monitor lizards. And very kid friendly. Room 45 has the best view from the others. On the river. Oh and one thing to think of... No blanket. Cold at night.

Unsere Toilette war undicht, damit der Badezimmer boden immer feucht, das Holz vom Bettrahmen war porös und so splittrig, dass man sich daran verletzen konnte. Staubwischen und Spinnennetze entfernen wurde lange nicht gemacht. Die Stühle auf der Terrasse waren sehr unbequem. Insgesamt war Zimmer 20 auf dem Felsen in keinem guten Zustand, über die anderen zimmer kann ich nichts sagen, es ist aber schwer vorstellbar, dass man nur ein Zimmer verkommen lässt und die anderen pflegt. Der Strand hat grundsätzlich sehr starke Wellen und zumindest auf den Felsen ist es sehr laut. Die Wellen brechen kurz vor dem Strand, Wellen surfen geht also nicht und auch zum Baden ist es eher unpraktisch. der Strand ist klein und hat nur ein Restaurant. Der Weg zum Resort eher schwierig. Von Tongsala mind. eine halbe Stunde mit dem Auto. Sehr abgelegen und kein guter Badestrand, grobkörniger Sand. Würde nicht wieder dort einchecken.

Einzigartig ist die Lage ganz direkt am Meer, somit auch ziemlich laut. Und in der Bucht ist es nicht so voll wie an anderen Stellen.
Das Mobiliar ist Marke Eigenbau: rustikal, haltbar. Die Kehrseite: manchmal nicht mehr so funktional. Insgesamt eine tolle Unterkunft an einem besonderen Ort.

Die Unterkunft ist vom Pier aus in einer 25 minütigen Taxi Fahrt über sehr steile Straßen zu erreichen, daher ist die Bucht sehr abgelegen und es gibt lediglich 2 Restaurants in der Anlage, was aber ausreichend ist. Eines direkt am Strand (coole Musik) und das andere höher gelegen mit atemberaubenden Blick aufs Meer!
Der Strand ist traumhaft schön und man fühlt sich wie Robinson....
Die Zimmer genügen etwas unterschiedlich hohen Standards, die neueren mit betonierten Fundament, die älteren nur aus Holz, es gibt Ventilatoren und Moskitonetze. Zum Teil sind die Unterkünfte in die Felsen bzw an den Hang gebaut und über abenteuerliche Wege zu erreichen. Insgesamt ein wunderschöner Platz, den wir nicht vergessen werden.

The perfect getaway!

A perfectly secluded bungalow on the rocks just above the ocean! You just get the basics here with no Wifi in the bungalow but an absolutely amazing nature view instead! Mai Pen Rai offers amazing food and especially the Thai food dishes and fried fish dishes are absolutely delicious! The atmosphere is totally laid back, boheme-like and chill as are the staff. Just what I needed! It's also worth mentioning that Mai Pen Rai are very focused on minimising plastic use and only have water in glass bottles, as well as a refill option! The beautiful beach is guarded by a healthy, well-nourished and friendly pack of dogs and a super cute pet pig. All in all it was a true healing experience to be here and I booked another week in one of the beach bungalows on arrival. Thanks a lot, Mai Pen Rai -- I'll be back!

Piękna plaża, ośrodek zostawia mieszane odczucia.

Po pobycie mam mieszane odczucia. Z jednej strony piękna plaża, ale stan techniczny domku i jego wyposażenia pozostawia trochę do życzenia. Jedzenie w lokalnej restauracji smaczne ale ceny zdecydowanie za wysokie w porównaniu do okolicznych realiów. Na szczęście można pożyczyć skuter i być niezależnym, choć trzeba pamiętać że ośrodek leży naprawdę na uboczu i koszt dojazdu taxi jest wysoki.

Unsere Hütte, Nr. 51, ist in die Jahre gekommen. Fenster gehen nicht mehr auf, ein bis zwei Regalbretter waren schon gewesen und der blinde Spiegel im Bad könnte mal erneuert werden. Personal sehr freundlich, Strand wundervoll. Zum Entspannen optimal.

Schönes Resort für Naturliebhaber

Das Mai Pen Rai liegt an einem traumhaften Strand fernab des Touristentrubels von Koh Phangan. Wer Ruhe sucht und abschalten möchte, der ist hier an der richtigen Adresse. Der von uns gebuchte Bungalow am Strand war einfach eingerichtet, aber sehr schön gestaltet und verfügte über eine große Terrasse. Das Restaurant des Resorts hat leider nicht überzeugt. An den thailändischen Standards gemessen war der Service und das Essen eher mittelmäßig, wobei zumindest das Frühstücksangebot positiv zu bewerten ist. Als Alternative gibt es zum Glück noch die Restaurants der anderen beiden Resorts vor Ort, sodaß für Abwechslung bei den Mahlzeiten gesorgt ist.

Lamentablemente pudimos dormir 2 de las 4 noches por problemas de salud. El personal se ocupó de nosotros perfectamente. Solo destacar que la regente del local no fue muy empática. Paraíso perdido del resto de la isla, a tenerlo en cuenta si lo que buscas es tranquilidad o fiesta

Loved the place, quite idyllic. However, very far from anything. You must rent a scooter or car BEFORE coming here (because the hotel \"surpisingly\" does not have any available ones). Hotel's restaurant has a good price for value. Overal service was OK but could be (much) kinder...

Idéal pour du repos !

Très bel endroit, idyllique par beau temps, sinon vous vous retrouverez un peu isolé et trésors dépendant des taxis hors de prix sur l'île ! Les bungalows sont très jolis, propres, Avec terrasse et hamac très agréables !
Dommage qu'il n'y ait pas de wifi.

Dagtrip ja, maar verblijf zeker niet!..

Toen we aankwamen zag het er top uit, mensen op het strandje en in t restaurant. Maar dat bleken dagjes mensen te zijn waar dit strandje zich goed voor leent (vandaar waarschijnlijk de hogere beoordelingen) Het personeel was ongeintresseerd, zelfs een taxi bellen was teveel gevraagd. de kamers vies, een gat in de klamboe was gemaakt met pleisters(??) en t strand lag vol met grof zand.. niet heel lekker. Er hing geen sfeer en de beloofde wifi was er ook niet.
Als je een vakantie wil waar je heel afgelegen zonder bereik en geen intresse van het personeel verwacht is dit je plek.
Anders, Buiten middagje strand raad ik mai pen rai af!.

Au top malgré le manque d'entretien

Établissement situé sur une crique paradisiaque, idéal pour les aventuriers. Au calme a complètement isolé, ce complexe comblera votre besoin de repos et de farniente. Personnel souriant, restauration convenable les pieds dans le sable et plage au top. Confort sommaire (pas d'eau chaude et Propreté à revoir.... le Seul bémol restera donc le manque d'entretien général des bungalows et de la plage, mais que voulez vous: vous êtes en Thaïlande lol

Die Unterkunft liegt in einer abgelegenen, hübschen Bucht. Es gibt zwei Restaurants direkt am Strand. Das Personal ist sehr freundlich und hat uns immer gern weitergeholfen.
Die Hütten sind sehr einfach und teilweise direkt am Strand gelegen.
Leider war unser Bungalow schon sehr kaputt und nicht wirklich sauber, sodass wir dieses ohne Aufpreis wechseln konnten. Leider war aber auch das nächste nur geringfügig besser.
An sich gefällt uns das Konzept wirklich sehr gut, nur an der Sauberkeit und dem Zustand der Hütten kann gearbeitet werden.

Wir hielten uns Mitte August für 4 Nächte in einem wunderschönen Bungalow auf. Der Meerblick war phantastisch. Die Ausstattung einfach-das wussten wir zuvor- d.h. es gab z.B. nur einen Ventilator, kaltes Wasser und und 2x am Tag für einige Stunden keinen Strom. Das war alles in Ordnung. Wer das Gefühl haben möchte auf einer einsamen Insel mitten im Dschungel zu verbringen, ist hier richtig. Für uns -zwei Singelreisende, die nicht mobil waren- war es nach 2 Tagen genug Einsamkeit. Es gibt kaum etwas rund herum, außer den Dschungel und das Meer.Am Meisten bedauerten wir, dass der nächste Geldautomat 40 min zu Fuß entfernt lag, was bei der Hitze und der steilen Straße etwas unkomfortabel war. Wir entschließen uns, mit unsrem Bargeld auszukommen und mussten uns sehr einschränken. Das Essen im Mai Pen ist hervorragend; besser als in den beiden anderen Restaurants. Das Silvercliff- Restaurant hat uns am Besten gefallen, wegen der Freundlichkeit und dem Ambiente.
In der Gegend kann man exotische Tiere bestaunen, was uns sehr freute; im Fluß gibt es Krokodile und Varane, kleine Äffchen direkt neben den Bungalows, Schlangen und viele Geccos, Kröten und sogar ein Schwein und eine Katze gab, es zu sehen.Störend waren nur die Party-Besucher-Boote, die täglich einige Stunden hier verbrachten.

Checkade in och checkade ut igen inom loppet av 2 timmar trots att vi betalt för 4 nätter. En ca 40 cm lång ödla och ca 7cm bred ödla fanns i rummet och vägrade flytta på sig. Massvis med stora hål i badrummet.

Paradis meg moskitos!

Vi koste oss på Mei Pan Rei,men angret veldig på at vi ikke hadde valgt en family bungalow. De var flotte og i god stand, men de billigere hyttene var ikke mye å skryte av. På dagtid koste vi oss på stranden,badet og leiet kajakk. Det var mye og se på. Blandt annet syntes barna det var veldig spennende med de store øglene som levde i der. Ikke reis der hvis du er redd innsekter , og husk lommelykt. Veldig mørkt om kvelden så den trenger du. God mat i restaurantene,prøv den helt på toppen. Fantastisk utsikt! Ikke forvent noe som helst luksus eller natteliv. Alt er stengt kl 22. Stå tidlig opp, og nyt stranden. Fineste jeg har vært på.

Für Backpacker ohne großer Ansprüche ist es perfekt. Wir hatten einen Bungalow direkt im Dschungel über dem Meer. Das Badezimmer ist toll, allerdings muss man es mögen mit aller Art von Tieren duschen zu wollen. Wir hatten leider kaum Licht im Bungalow, sidass das suchen im Gepäck immer etwas schwierig war. Dafür hat der Blick von der Terrasse auf den eigenen Stand, den die Familie auch immer sauber gehalten hat, alles entschädigt.
Das Essen im Restaurant dort ist sehr günstig und auch gut. Oft wurde der Strom ausgemacht und das w lang funktionierte nicht immer.
Aber alles in alles tolles Preis- Leistungsverhältnis. Bisher auch mein bester Bungalow in Thailand.
