A shower rather than one over the bath would have been easier. Instructions for operating the shower would have been useful as the water was very hot and we wasted a lot getting it to the correct temperature.

The traditional English breakfast was well worth the wait for being cooked to order, probably the best cooked breakfast I've had in years! And a nice selection of buffet items as well. In October the parking wasn't an issue, but I can imagine its more problematic at busy times of year. The building is nearly 200 years old so I can forgive the creaky floorboards, but the bed we had was also very creaky which was a little annoying. Overall it was excellent value for money and I would stay again.

We had an excellent seaview from our room number 211 which was a highlight and great to wake up to . Overall the hotel was OK, but a bit dated. Our room was large but cold, beds were comfy. We had a twin room and this was situated at the rear over looking the car park. Furniture was dated but sufficient. The room had the usual complimentary tea and coffee. The worst thing was the bathroom. Cracked ceiling, a rather large dead spider on the floor, radiator caked in dust, the bath panel was cracked and warped with water, the door hinges were rusty. It just needed a complete makeover and clean.
We were lucky to park on the street, although there is parking to the rear of the hotel, it was already reserved.
Sadly there was no meals being served, but there's plenty of places to eat nearby. I wouldn't advise going out in the car as you may not be able to park when you get back.
Hotel is at the top of a hill, and in good position and walking distance for all the local amenities.

Unable to park anywhere near the hotel had a ten min walk from where I parked.
Room on the nicer end of basic, but good value for the price.
Hotel in general is nice , great location, needs a lick of paint and some new carpets in places.

It was a one night stay. Only used the room and had one drink in the bar. Very warm weather at the time so we found the room very warm and with no air con, had to have the fan running all night. But yeah, it was an ok stay and great for taking our dogs as there is a small grassed are right outside. Great local for beach etc

Very tired property and the room was unbearably hot even with the tiny fan going the whole time. The shower is scalding hot or cool - no in between. Apparently our carpet had been replaced only two weeks ago but the room smelt of dog wee/stale odours. The bathroom needs regrouting. The first impression isn’t great as you enter - a big hole in the wall where someone has maybe kicked it or punched it or something. Very odd that it hasn’t been fixed. Staff are lovely though. That’s one positive. But definitely won’t be back purely based on the tiny room and the need for a refurbishment and relatively expensive for what you get. Sorry.

I just wish there was a bit more pride taken in hygiene standards. Ultimately, this comes down to management — if the managers don’t set even the most basic levels, the cleaners will naturally cut corners.

The room itself was not clean. The walls had random dents and visible damage, while the shower area was covered in mould and dust had gathered everywhere. A basic bottle of bleach costs less than £1, so there’s really no excuse not to maintain the bathroom properly.

On a positive note, the reception staff were very friendly and welcoming.

Stayed with a friend via work. We had room 211. A twin.

Arrived pretty much on 1500 at check in time. Staff were flat out and we were asked to wait 15 mins for our room to be ready. Not a problem. Wed have waited. But what was amazing was the offer of a drink whilst we waited. After travelling 4 hours, this was gratefully received.

All staff we came across were superb, humorous and very friendly.

The room Was spacious, clean and tidy. Tv a little small if you’re going to be in the room but we weren’t fussed by this as we were heading out for work drinks and food. Shower was amazing powerful and hot. Nice view from the Maggie bay window too.

Bar was a good area with TVs if you wanted them. Good selection of drinks.

Hotel very convenient for town and the sea front. We’ll be returning for sure.

The bathroom definitely needed an upgrade and the windows need refurb/ replacement. We didn't eat here so I can't comment on the food. Having said this it wouldn't stop me staying here again. When we first arrived, we were not even greeted by the two women at reception. Finally, a nice man who appeared to be the caretaker, greeted us and helped us check in, despite one of the two women disagreeing with him whether the room was ready or not. He walked us through the main building, which was old, dirty and very musty, to the second building that you get to through an alley of sorts. The room was a decent size and cleanish and did not smell musty, though there was mold in the window. There clearly had not been a deep clean in years. They provided lots if towels and pillows, but the pillows were awful, flat and no support. It was a quick walk to town and the beach. A safety concern: Access to the second building was from a main level door that was left open and unlocked, even at night, so anyone walking down the adjoining alley could gain access.

This is not an hotel. Restaurant has been closed for over three years, therefore it is a large b&b. Only offers breakfast
No other food available. Not suitable for anyone with any disability. An open staircase at floor level on ground floor is very dangerous to children or elderly. Only has 7 parking spaces, which must be booked and 'free' parking on road is rarely available. Bar facilities are very limited. Awful place!

Okay in dire circumstances

We got a room that you would be okay with if you stayed at a relative's spare bedroom, but as something this costly - the quality does not match the price.

The carpet had some weird stains on it and the windows looked like they had mould on them or just like they haven't been cleaned in a while.

There was some hair in the bathtub, the toiletries provided seemed to have been used (from the previous visitor I assume), there was a sign for directions of use for a shower curtain and a bath mat - none of which were provided, and to top it off, there was a peephole in the wall next to the shower controls.

Although dog friendly, they do charge a hefty fee. And while other places that charge such fees at least offer bedding, food/water bowls, snacks etc. for the pet, here you get nothing. Just paying for the luxury of having your pet in the room.

On a more positive note, the bedding was clean, and you did have a variety of tea+coffee options. It's a shame that the only positive points are something that should be taken for granted. Based on the room we also decided not to go for the breakfast.

Below average room, not well cleaned. If you have a dog with you, there are probably better options around.

We had stayed here before and were disappointed earlier this year, when we were informed that the hotel was permanently closed. We were therefore delighted when we received an email from Richardson Hotels, offering accommodation there again.
We booked a week in early July and weren't disappointed. Yes, the fabric of the hotel needs some attention but our room was clean and comfortable and benefitted from a bay window with a sea view.
The staff were friendly, accommodating and very hard-working always with a smile on their faces.
We would certainly stay here again in the future.

Made to feel I was a burden

My 3 stay here (10th - 13th July 2025) was during a heatwave. My sea view bedroom got extremely warm and there was no air conditioning or fan to make the stay more comfortable. The bathroom floor was squeaky and I could also hear the squeaky floor from the next room. The TV was very basic.
This hotel has a strange policy of having to book in for breakfast by the previous evening - I have NEVER encountered such a policy at other hotels I stayed at. If you forget to book breakfast in advance the hotel management aren’t very forgiving - they charge you an extra £2 so even though I was a paying guest I was made to feel a burden to them and unwelcome by the manager. On principle I decided not to pay the additional £2 and instead walked a short distance along the same road to The Manor Hotel where I WAS welcomed and had a lovely full breakfast for £13
The Royal Beacon Hotel has lost all credibility for that appalling policy and I would no longer recommend this hotel.

Very small and dated rooms. Bathroom was almost bigger than the bedroom yet the shower box was super tiny, impossible to turn around inside and no place to put soap.
Courtyard rooms are not good and we got woken up twice by garbage truck 5.30am and then 6.30am

I’ve stayed at this hotel many times. On this occasion my stay was okay. Nice room with sea view. The room was comfortable and clean but there was no hand soap and there was insufficient shower gel (30ml) for one person yet alone two - for 2 nights (the room was booked for two people) - Luckily I had taken my own soap and toiletries.
Breakfast was enjoyable and the staff were friendly.

But otherwise, room was clean, sheets clean and bathroom. Tv worked fine as well. Bed was comfy and very spacious room. We didnt eat there but it smelt fgood in the morning. Great value overall and we would stay again. Location is great to walk to the sea front and we were lucky and able to park on the street outside. Only issue we had we didn't find a hairdryer in the room but as it was late we didn't ring down to check.

The Staff were very welcoming and friendly, and my check in was quick and easy. The room was a decent size, and everything was clean, including the bathroom. It's a good location as it's only a couple of minutes walk from either Exmouth town centre or the seafront. It is an older building, so getting to and from the room requires a fair bit of up and down stairs. The room was quite warm, and tricky to have the window open (seagulls!) - no a huge deal.

Despite seeing photos of the hotel online, the actual condition and appearance was not as expected. Our room was far from it. Generally the main areas of the hotel were tired-looking and outdated.

We only stayed for one night but it was a very uncomfortable one - our room was tiny, with dirty carpet and obvious dust. The bathroom facilities were clean as was the bedding but things like handles on furniture being rusty were not pleasant. There was one small window which didn’t allow for much airflow, making the room stifling. One positive was upon calling reception, they quickly brought up a fan (which my partner had to fix as it was rattling loudly). Neither of us slept properly.

Another issue was the door-locking mechanism which, upon leaving, would not lock until either a few minutes had passed or we scanned the keycard (we couldn’t tell which, and this wasn’t explained). We left feeling uneasy about our belongings being left in the room. When we returned for the evening, the inside lock would not stay and took repeated attempts to remain in place. We did use the chair to block the door in case.

We left feeling like we would not be returning.

Reception were lovely - we were put in the annex building right at the back of the hotel, room unclean dush on the sides and windows. Shower had mould round the rims of things - and the room had a very damp like smell - this morning on check out I felt like I couldn’t breathe. Condensation everywhere, wall paper coming off the wall- guessing due to damp. Nice location and staff very lovely and friendly but wouldn’t stay again. There is about 8 parking spaces for a 52 bed and you have to find your own parking if you don’t get one of these spaces. Side streets or somewhere else in town.

The room we were first allocated had a broken window latch, the second room was really cold.
The young lady on reception was friendly and very helpful and quickly found us an upgraded room which was much appreciated. We enjoyed our stay in the new room.

We had a very pleasant overnight stay in a very nice room. Our only issue was the bathroom door was very badly warped and could only be closed if slammed. It then took a great deal of force to open it. If we had been staying for more than 1 night we would have asked to change rooms but decided to put up with it as we wouldn't be spending much time in the room. We only had dealings with the reception staff but all were very helpful and friendly.

We had a lovely stay in a comfortable and spacious room overlooking the estuary. Our room had a small table and two chairs as well as a side table for hot water kettle and tea and coffee fixings. There was plenty of room for two of us with a gorgeous view.
