A grand hotel building set on a picturesque estate with very good parking. It is set quite of the beaten path and the lane leading to the car park area was quite bumpy, dirty and replete with potholes. The hotel is part of the Sure Collection which is Best Western's premier line. The décor was a little tired, especially the carpeting in the corridors, some of which seemed to have been cleaned but only on the main walkway areas. The room was nice and spacious as was the bathroom. The shower took a while to warm up but was enjoyable. Breakfast was the highlight of the stay with a friendly and enthusiastic member of staff who took my order for a cooked breakfast which was as well cooked as I have had for a very long time and got my day off to the best start.

We only stayed for one night as we were on route to Cornwall, the staff were very friendly, lovely and welcoming. We had the Sunday roast and the Gammon was amazing we had to speak to the chef to let him know! The hotel is situated in beautiful calming surroundings and wish we had more time here! The room was spotless and looked like the bathroom had been refurbished and had everything we needed. Breakfast also was plentiful and more than enough choices and good quality. Would definitely stay here again if we are in the area. Big thank you to everyone

The property was in a lovely quiet location with a wonderful view but this meant you had quite a distance of single track narrow roads to get to it. It was very warm when we stayed and unfortunately the menu in the restaurant was limited to quite heavy more wintery food and after we got served our food we didn’t see any staff so had we wanted a dessert or more drinks it would have been a problem.

This property was a proper little hideaway! The road in to it was a bit scary but well worth the trip! The property definitely had an air of bygone refinement to it. We had a very peaceful stay. The staff were very friendly and appeared gnuinely pleased to care for us.. It is a wonderful venue for business conferences, weddings etc.

Stunning from the outside, however the room needed some tlc (not sure if perhaps our room is used as a pet friendly room which might explain that). Bathroom was really nice, recently refurbished.
Out room was situated above some outside seating and other guests were fairly noisy outside until gone 11pm which wasn't great. Food was generally good, had one issue with an item, but no apology and seemed to be an effort to get the item removed from the bill.
Fire alarm also went off at 6:50am.
Unlikely we would stay again.

Restaurant service, quality and quantity very good, but had issue with the Hotel's 3 course dinner offer. Obviously the Chef was not in agreement with the offer and it took ages to serve, otherwise the food was lovely. Room very comfortable, but if you are disabled in any way, there is no lift.

Absolutely awful, disturbed repeatedly by others.

Initial thoughts were that the hotel looked lovely. Went downhill a tad when we had to hunt for the waiter to place our dinner order, food was mediocre.
Room comfortable.
Having been up since 5am, we were crashed by 9.30pm, only to be woken at 11.23pm by lots of people outside our room, talking very loudly. I went to politely ask them to be quiet, to be greeted by about ten people all standing in the room opposite with a camera man.
I called down to Reception for support, but dialling 0 as per their brochure didn't get a response so I used my mobile to call the main hotel number. The gentleman said he would speak to the guests.
I went back to bed, but was again disturbed at 12.15am by loud voices and electronic beeping. I opened my door & was again greeted by a large group of people standing in the room opposite.
I called the night porter and was told that 'they'll be finished filming at 12.30'... seriously???
I barely got any sleep after that as I was so angry.
It transpires that it was a paranormal event where people can book 'haunted rooms'. Obviousky the room opposite ours was one of the haunted rooms!
I spoke to the lady in the desk in the morning and explained our dissatisfaction with the situation, to be told that 'they're normally quiet'.
Totally unacceptable. Would not ever recommend this hotel and I will be contacting the Manager directly.

Room a little old fashioned (bathroom had been refurbed though), mattress awful (really bad). Location, grounds, view and staff amazing. Didn't get any GPS close by so was a little frustrating to find initially. Drive up to hotel is full of potholes which probably belongs to a neigbouring property, however it is pretty bad and some are very deep, could be damaging.

First impressions was that check in was a little slow, ringing the phone at reception didn’t work so I found the bar where there was a member of staff.
Food was excellent both breakfast and supper and service staff were attentive and efficient. Generous smoked salmon with scrambled egg.
Bed was very comfortable, rooms warm, decor a little tired and bathroom needing a small amount of DIY. Seeing to the base of the bath. Walks are terribly thin, some guests are incredibly selfish when it comes to noise levels.
We were very happy with our stay and would definitely come back. Thankyou a much needed break.

Great, peaceful location and lovely grounds to walk our dog. Warm welcome and allocated large, very clean room with modern bathroom. would have been nice to be offered help with luggage to the the top of the building. Didn't have breakfast as left early. Had bar drinks in our room. Lighting very bright in bar area. Staff all friendly and hotel reasonably priced and very quiet with lovely countryside and near to Exeter.

Pleasant hotel with lovely surroundings.

Visiting Exeter for university open day with son. It was located near enough to where we needed to be the next day with lovely views of the countryside. The evening meal was pleasant and the breakfast was good. The clean and tidy twin room had a large en-suite. The staff were on hand and very helpful. It provided us with everything needed for an overnight stop over.
Only downside was, it was a bit tricky to find.

Hotel is in a pleasant rural area accessed via single track lanes. The hotel has an unusual layout - it doesn't exactly flow and the restaurant lacks atmosphere. The bathroom was recently refitted and very pleasant. The checkout was a farce as each of our three parties was overcharged having already paid for breakfast upon booking we then had to prove this before additional breakfast charge was removed. Food was uninspiring, the scampi and chips was clearly frozen rather than fresh. In all I would describe as an acceptable but uninspiring hotel set in nice grounds

My stay was for a business trip and I must say it was very pleasant. The room was excellent and comfy with a supersized bath which was so relaxing after a busy day. The one downer on the room was that everywhere else I have stayed for this kind of trip have always done daily housekeeping and topped up supplies but unfortunately they didn’t here and I had to ask on a couple of occasions for top ups, not a major issue but just something I noted.
The big big plus is the food, it is a minimal menu but everything I had was superb, maybe they have it right and have few dishes but do them really well, compliments to the chef and kitchen staff👏👌
All staff were really pleasant and helpful.

Not the bestest Best Western hotel. Room was large and bright but very dated and had a few problems i.e. shower handle was broken, toilet seat would not stay up (for gents) hot and cold taps feel sure should have been the other way round felt the whole place could do with uplifting. Not very clear on check in regarding COVID and housekeeping when we went to ask for milk we were told we had to request everything down to clean towels as there was no room service would have helped if we were advised at time of check in. Pricing in the bar was hit and miss two nights never the same price but same drinks. Very expensive too. Breakfast was ok up to last morning and poached eggs came as fried they were willing to take back but we accepted, would not like to see them thrown away. Waitress was off reception and said they were busy can’t see why that would make your order wrong. All in all surroundings were very peaceful so we had a relaxing break.

Lovely view - although access to hotel was down very narrow lanes. The staff and service were excellent - the best we've seen in a long time; especially the man on reception when we arrived, who then also became our very efficient waiter. The food was also good - evening meal and breakfast.
The only thing I didn't like was having a wash basin in the bedroom rather than in the ensuite. Decor was a little tired but all clean.

Wasn’t going to comment on this place after my stay last week as had to go back today and this was only place showing with a room - an “executive room wit a view”. Booked as last time I ended up with an airless and noises room (standard room apparently) So confirmation received from Expedia turned up at the reception. Only to find they have lost/not received my booking and have no rooms available.

While the European guy on reception did try to be helpful, the UK guy (manager?) seemed to think it was my fault! I should also flag that during this entire time non of the staff wore masks - although not now illegal Gov’t advice to do so in enclosed spaces. They even have a sign up saying this!!! My feedback last time was going to be this was not only the case in reception, but the bar and the restaurant - is it really Best Western’s policy for their staff to infect guests of their hotels?

So never again - even if it is the only place supposedly with rooms. Plus unless I hear from Best Western on their COVID policy then none of their hotels.

Why so many good repeated reviews???

What a disappointment overall. I will say that the service was generally ok but let down by the lack of fixing hot water when promised then finding that you have to run the taps fir 10mins to get any heat at all wasting all that water. Shower head filthy and pressure poor. Room was warm and bed comfy. Breakfast was good and plentiful. Room service good too however bottled beers served were out of date. Mentioned on check out but nothing said. Signage to car park and entrance could be improved especially if you’re trying to arrive at night. I had booked for the whole month but have decided to look elsewhere.

First room, room 11, oh dear it was horrible. Decor drab, smelly, awful view. Member of staff tried his best to tape over some sharp broken floor tiles in the bathroom. Said that I thought they should not really hire this room out. We were found another room and then everything was great.
Our family had three rooms between us, had breakfast 2 mornings and dinner 4 nights. Breakfasts were great. Dinner, got a bit fed up of chips with everything except the currys. Did give us some mashed potato one night when we asked if there was an alternative to chips. Lamb koftas were tasty but did not look great with chips a smallpot of sauce and dip. Some sort of salad would have made the dish look more appealing. Very expensive for what you had. The chicken breast with bbq sauce was dry. Steak night was good, steaks cooked well. The family enjoyed the currys, scampi and pork and apple burgers. Sticky toffee pudding was a favourite but was told it tastied more of treacle by family, they still loved it and ordered it over and over! Staff did their best for us and were friendly, they seemed to multi task a great deal. Often on front desk, serving in restaurant and the bar all at the same time. Bells at different sites so you could ring for them. Overall, had a lovely stay and would gladly return but not room 11 until it has some work done in it! Nearby horse riding was enjoyed by family members, they provide any equipment needed and very good value. Exeter quay also a lovely place to visit.

An enjoyable stay with great food!

A lovely stay, a good base for exploring Devon.
The journey from the main roads is quite difficult, down country lanes which are VERY narrow, but view on arrival is stunning. Food was great, service was very friendly. The room was clean - visited during Corona pandemic, so there were precautions in place - no room cleaning during occupancy and measures in place at meal times.
Unwittingly, I paid a lot more through Hotels.com than the cost of the room so would book directly if I went again.

Worst Best Western ever!

During Covid pandemic you’d of thought the toilets would have been cleaned more regularly. Tick sheet in the gents toilet said Monday last checked, we arrived Wednesday. Someone had used toilet roll to open the door, this was left in there for hours! The waiter was throwing plates down on tables, with no consideration for diners. Never asked how our meal was, in fact we left most of it as the chips were drowned in salt prior to being served. This made it totally inedible. The place was full of owners with dogs. Never again!!!

This was the second of three visits to this Hotel. The next visit will be the last visit I will ever make to a Best Western Hotel anywhere on the planet. The issue I have with BW are around 'BW's' Customer Services, which put simply; SUCK! This visit I had suitcase and dog lead (with Dog attached) in one hand, and the Dog's crate in the other; yet the Receptionist was adamant I needed to pay for my room first!!! (I had prepaid, but needed to pay for the Dogs.) A firm response brought the Guy to his senses and he issued the key. A quick wash, and downstairs for a pre-bed drink and Bar Snacks (we had already had a main meal). Initially we were told that there was NO FOOD, having travelled 125 miles my sense of humour had evaporated, but luckily the Receptionist went from 'Zero' to 'Hero'; producing a plate of food. The room was very pleasant, this one (two doors down from the last room we had) was much, much cleaner. The light from the hallway was very intrusive, making a 'Good night's sleep' impossible. Had we been staying for longer than a night, words would have been exchanged.

Had a one night stay for business. The hotel has no walkable shops or pubs nearby, so I ate there. When driving there, the road from the Ide village is slightly wider than from the other way down the country lanes.

There is no lift and no offer of help to your room with luggage on checking in.

In the summer, it must be nice to sit in the courtyard but in February, I remained in the bar which was empty and it seemed the few guests had all retired to their rooms by 8.45pm.
The front door has a keycode to get in after 10.30pm, it created a sense of being locked in from the dark winter night.

Bar food was reasonable and breakfast was brought out to you, but was so quick it obviously wasn't cooked fresh.

The hotel is down a private lane with a house alongside. A person was sat in the restaurant talking to staff in the morning and had his 2 dogs with him, I have dogs myself and don't mind them at all, but there was no apology from the owner or the staff when these dogs took a dislike to me and growled, barked and pulled on their leads towards me. Not sure if this was a local visiting friends at the hotel or a guest, but the dismissive \"they don't like you\" from the serving staff was met with me replying \" I dont like them much either\"

Wouldn't stay again, too remote, a few niggles re no lift and no atmosphere.

Poor reception

This is a lovely hotel in a great position albeit accessed through narrow lanes. Room was excellent, well furnished and comfortable with a first class bathroom. My overall impression was tainted though by reception being deserted at 9.45 pm when I arrived and the bar being closed. When I did get the receptionist by using the phone on the desk he did say he could get drinks if we wanted them (another guest had arrived at the same time) but I was rather hoping to unpack and then go to the bar for a drink.

Lovely place with very nice comfortable rooms. Lots of parking and quiet however This hotel is described as “city centre” which I needed but it was miles away in the middle of nowhere. Made my trip very difficulty

Because it was in the middle of nowhere we liked the fact that it had a bar and restaurant. They only downfall I felt like I was wasting food. Their portions were so generous I could only eat half of what was served. The chef and kitchen staff should be complimented on food prep. The food was excellant just the portion size was too much.
