Smooth check-in, nice big room which was good as we had our 2 dogs staying with us, comfortable bed, decent shower, everything you needed.
Only issue was that, like most hotels, the room was very warm so you needed the window open, but our room was overlooking what I assume was the kitchens and the AC or ventilation for them was quite noisy from early in the morning.

The hotel is centrally located. So great for a city visit. Lobby and reception were pleasant. Veronica the receptionist was lovely and very helpful. The on site parking has very limited spaces and cost £12.50 per night. Not detailed on Hotels.com website so an unpleasant surprise on arrival. . The lift was not working on my visit. The breakfast buffet £16 was good and catered well for.me as a Coeliac. Lots of Gluten free options. The room was clean fresh and tidy. Good shower and bathroon. But when you factor in the extra parking cost and breakfast the Hotels.com discount was not such a great deal as it seemed on Hotels.com site Not the Rougemonts fault

The Rougemont hotel is beautiful, full of character and very conveniently located opposite Exeter Central station, but despite the location there was barely any road noise.

Reading the previous reviews, I feel like I had a case of bad luck!! 😭

Positives - The hotel is in a central location - literally a stones throw from Exeter Central station (30 seconds) and has such a grand reception area as you enter.
The reception team were great in allowing my friend to enter the room prior to me paying as I was delayed due to accidents. Thank you for that

Negatives - the room had no spare towels in the wardrobe as stated nor an ironing board. The latter not so bad because that is a quick call to reception; but on the third night, our room wasn’t cleaned as the hotel states although I had checked the day before if it would be. By the fourth night it was but we only had one more night there.

On the morning of my checkout, I asked to leave my luggage there and had to pay £5!! The man at reception stated it is free on the weekends which is ridiculous but what is worse is that Jan 1 is a weekend and if I wasn’t running to catch a train for my hike, I would have stated that. I have never had to pay to leave my luggage at a hotel that I have stayed in and it didn’t help matters to find out that members of my hiking crew who also stayed there did not have to pay. It is unreasonable to have charged me and not even issue a refund for it. It put a massive dampener on the trip because I only stayed there because our hiking party was held there for NYE but after the service I experienced, I will look at alternative accommodation.

Room was badly set out. Bathroom was tiny. Had to shuffle round the bathroom door to be able to use the toilet. Shower screen was so close to the sink it was ridiculous. Charged £5 to leave luggage as too early to book in although not sure what the £5 was actually for.. maybe the tag? Great location but disappointing experience.

The staff were welcoming and helpful. The hotel downstairs is amazing but the room was very tired. It was a cold night and there was no extra blanket but on requesting one the next morning a second duvet was supplied.
We did not have breakfast so cannot comment on that. The position of the hotel is excellent. Right opposite the railway station and a short walk from the city centre.

We were disappointed when we arrived as wanted to leave a small bag for couple hours as bit early for room and we were charged £5. We've never paid anywhere else for that service.

Room 230 had holes in the curtains when drawn, very noticeable, so new curtains needed. Also provide a coffee machine with pods, but give you the little cartons of UHT milk, which you have to keep asking for. There is a fridge in the room, why not a jug of milk in the fridge would be better. Also attention to detail, eg) soap dispenser fitted to wall, but out of line, not straight, seem with bathroom vent. Also noise of the central heating is loud, kept me awake the first night.

The common areas and my room had been lovingly restored and were spotless. Staff were also extremely friendly.

The only downsides were not very thick walls between rooms, curtains that didn't shut all the way and a £5 charge to store luggage,

Good enough for the price. Clearly in need of updating. The shower, in particular, had trouble delivering hot water in the morning. Our second set of towels were hidden in the wardrobe. The toiletries were good, there was a kettle and the front desk staff very efficient. Parking was available and a reasonable price for the location. The hotel has the potential to be very good, but needs work.

Highly recommend! Front desk staff member was friendly and helpful as soon as we arrived. The room, including the bathroom, was spotless, spacious and comfortable. We had heavy luggage so they put us on a floor that had a working lift. Great location in the middle of Exeter. Loved the building! Free wifi but not secured with a password.

Very clean, staff were lovely. Bed was huge and very comfy. The walls are incredibly thin though, we could hear the guest in the room next door on his phone, we could hear every word! Luckily we had brought earplugs for night. The car park is small but alternative parking was available. Can’t fault the location, right by the town centre. Didn’t eat in the hotel because there was so much choice minutes from the hotel. Would book again, good value for money.

Our male Room Attendant was the friendliest member of the hotel team and he kept our rooms clean and stocked. Receptionists were the least friendly and very unhelpful. Our welcome was very inefficient and our departure even worse. On arrival a second payment was taken for one of our 2 rooms when infact Expedia had already prepaid for both. Obtaining a refund was time consuming and convoluted.
The lift to the 2nd floor had been out of action for 2 weeks yet our rooms were on that floor meaning carrying cases up and down was a struggle for us.
The bar was expensive so sadly we chose not to use it.
This was a repeat visit to the Rougemont but probably our last. Such a shame as it is a splendid Victorian building and its location opposite the railway station is ideal.

I was given a room on the 4th Floor, in the attic, which has no lift and only a rickety old staircase to get up there. The lift only reaches the 3rd floor and then there are more steps to get across the landing and up 2 flights of stairs. Given I had 2 pieces of luggage, I had to go up and down a lot. I would NEVER stay at this hotel for that reason alone. They should make this lack of accessibility clear for guests.

Right from when we arrived at reception, everyone has has been extremely nice, the receptionist the bar staff the cleaners everyone, we couldn’t ask for. The room was lovely and clean, the bed was really comfy, the bathroom was spotless as was the room itself, we had tea and coffee making facilities, there was plenty of wardrobe space and hangers, just perfect.

Property has minimal parking that’s used by patrons not from the hotel. Only other options are expensive garages blocks away. Elevator was not in working order. Would not stop on level two. You had to walk up or down to the floor. Bathroom was missing hand soap, there was a large hair ball on the shower wall and the telephone cord was ripped out of the wall.

The hotel is fine but they hiked up the price so much because it was university drop off weekend and Women’s’ England World Rugby. We had no choice but to book this hotel as all others were booked up and it was probably quadruple the normal rate. Then on top of that they charged us for parking and there was no breakfast included. Very disappointing.

Because we had train delays we were late booking in.Not a problem though The friendly receptionist was very welcoming. The bed was huge and after a very stressful day we had agood nights sleep in the most comfortable bed. Checkout was not until 12 noon so we had time for a quick visit to the city centre which is about a 5 minutes walk away The train station is just across the road so this is a very convenient place to stay

Super warm welcome - could not have done more for us which immediately made me feel important.
Excellent location for the centre but quiet since it is located away from the bars etc that were busy.
Can’t speak for how this is during university term time as we visited in the holidays but I got an excellent nights sleep & was not disturbed at all despite being a sunny Saturday evening!
Overall we had a very pleasant stay.

The staff were lovely but as check in was 2.00pm and I arrived about 3.15 I was disappointed to be kept waiting as the room wasn’t ready.
I had booked a single room but, as I have mobility issues, I was dismayed to discover that the lift only went to the 3rd floor and there were 2 steep lots of stairs to get to my room. (No indication of this on the website!) The room was a nice attic room with a view of the cathedral and the staff carried my bags, but I quickly realised that I couldn’t cope with all the stairs for a 3-night stay. I went down to reception (no phone in the room) and asked for another room. As all the single rooms were on the 4th floor, I was eventually upgraded to a double room on the first floor.
I didn’t book breakfast but discovered that there was an excellent option for a smaller breakfast to pay at the time. This was beautifully cooked and included tea/coffee and was very good value.
The décor is uninspiring which is a shame, as the hotel has lots of interesting features, but every member of staff, I spoke to, were helpful and friendly.
Be aware of this hotel if you have mobility issues and check with the hotel before booking.
I was also disturbed by a welcome email ‘Hello! Greetings for the Day! We are delighted that you and your family have chosen our property for your stay.’ Why did they think my family had booked into a single room?
Overall, a convenient hotel with lovely staff.
