Staff all nice.
Room worn but clean and tidy so a reasonable stay.
Hopefully the following is helpful feedback;
Fridge not working (a 2nd one added to the room wasn't working either). Kettle lid broken and kept falling off when filling with water.
The in-shower shelf was missing therefore shower gel on the floor. Not a worry to me but maybe to less mobile people.
Rooms are not very sound proofed so corridor noise is a problem without very good earplugs.
Bed comfy.
The bar and lobby are fine and the car park is great so near to town and the quays.
As this is one of the less expensive hotels, on balance it is ok and would stay again but would keep an eye on the price.

Stayed one night in Exeter . Room was average. The bedroom carpet had a lot of stains on it ( kept shoes on )
Used the pool which was great but the woman’s showers had black mould on the ceiling above the showers and around the pipe going up into the ceiling inside the shower which was a bit off putting .
Staff were polite and helpful .
Disappointing I wouldn't rate it as 4 star. For one night it was doable .

The room (1) was noisy. We could hear the guests next door showering. And the plumbing in our room also needed looking at as every time we flushed the loo or showered the pipe work would be noisy. We reported it.

Service at reception could have been better. I arrived a bit early, around 13:00, and asked whether a room might be available. The receptionist told me that no rooms were ready and that check in was not until after 15:00. I said that was fine, but asked if she could please let me know as soon as a room became available, as I was very tired and hoping to rest.

I then had something to eat in the restaurant and afterwards sat in the reception area, clearly visible from the desk, waiting to hear if a room was ready. The receptionist saw me several times but did not provide any update. At around 14:30 I asked a different member of staff if a room was available, and I was immediately given one. When I entered the room, it did not appear to have just been vacated, which suggests that rooms may have been available earlier.

This is the first time I have experienced this level of reluctance to assist as a guest, which was disappointing.

That said, the room itself was fine, if a bit warm, and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was very good, and the rest of the staff were friendly and helpful.

Fairly spacious room and clean except coffee/tea stains on one wall). Some of the furniture definitely seen better days. Mattress and pillows rather hard! Great bathroom/shower although looked like an apprentice had done the siliconing in places 😳

Good value for money except the car parking charge - cheaper to use local car park nearby but it was too wet this time.

Has so much potential to be an amazing hotel and the convenient location is why I still return. Booked a Privilege room however the mattress was awful and the bedding felt cheap. Also cleaning standards didn’t seem great as I found a half opened drink in the fridge and rubbish on the floor. The jacuzzi was also out of order. I ate in the restaurant but found the beef and veg dish to be very bland. The staff here are always very polite and the overall vibe good. I think it just needs a thorough update and maintenance issues fixed once and for all.

It was generally a lovely stay but there was a funny smell in the pool area and also in the morning in the bedroom there was a odd smell of sewage. TV is very old and dated but otherwise general facilities were fine and the location was good.

The dinner was terrible along with the service and ended up not eating the dinner, rooms very dated with a tv that didn’t work. Also scratches all over the wall. Leak in the cealing I. The Galway with a rubbish bucket underneath it, just to finish it off paying £16 for the parking.

Staff nice. Room ok but it was a shame no one mentioned to me when I checked in that the heating was not working and I would need to not spend ten minutes fiddling with the unit and instead get the radiator that was hidden in the cupboard. Also the WiFi bandwidth in the evening was terrible, which is not really good enough in a modern business hotel.

Staff excellent, lovely Xmas decor, breakfast was amazing. Only let down was a very uncomfortable mattress that was lumpy, uneven and you could feel the springs. One end of the bed had all but collapsed. But despite this, we would stay in a Mercure again.

The spa was closed for our stay. I would have expected to have been informed of this prior to arrival. Very disappointing as it was a feature we intended to use as part of our itinerary
The room was for a disabled person and the en-suite not as expected accordingly. Also disappointingly this was not made clear to us.
There were light bulbs out in the en-suite. The tv remote was not operating properly.
Lack of attention to detail overall was not of a standard we have come to expect.

The reviews online are correct. This hotel does not have functioning air conditioning. Luckily the local temperature was in the low 20s. If it had been high summer it woukd have been unbearable. Fof this hotel to say rooms have AC when they don't and obviously haven’t for a the whole year, is unacceptable. Avoid.

Decent hotel, in a pretty much perfect location.
Gymnasium usage was complimentary (but the facility wasn't very good).
Use of the pool/jacuzzi carried an additional charge, even if you were a hotel guest.
Parking also carried an additional charge.
Very clever, seeing as guests would be charged to park anywhere else they found nearby.

The lobby, bar and restaurant have an elegant and timeless feel. I loved relaxing on the terrace with a cup of tea and a book. The room was large but my air conditioner didn’t work and the bed felt worn/old. I mentioned it to the desk and they put a mattress topper on the bed which really fixed the issue. The windows opened and in late August with the fan in the room - I was comfortable. The comfort of the rest of the hotel and the fantastic sauna, pool and hot tub made up for the bed and air con to the point that I will definitely stay here again!

Air con rooms is a lie

This was my second stay this year with the last approx 5 months ago.
On that occasion, the air conditioning was not working in the more expensive privilege rooms and the staff informed me they knew, and this had been the case for months.

With the recent warm weather, I checked the website to make sure the privilege rooms are being listed as including having air conditioning as they are more expensive and in fact, they do confirm this as a feature.

Low and behold, five months on there is still no air-conditioning, but they are happy to take your extra money and promote it.

Stay here quite often on business and unfortunately there seems to be a gradual decline in maintenance and general condition. The air conditioning in the rooms is still not working and in the room I had this time the TV would not function.
It’s not a cheap hotel and the service/ food and pool area usually great however the rooms themselves really need some attention.

We had a lovely room and free drinks were put into our fridge everyday but didn’t get any milk or teabags, the bed was awful springs protruding everywhere and I came home with a bad back and pillows were not much better. But the worst thing of all was for 4 nights of our 5 the toilet stopped flushing and we had to call maintenance in for those days , we were told they ordered the correct part but it had not arrived before we left but worse than that was the raw sewage smell in the bedroom, however we were greatful for working air con as we heard a lot of people complaining they had none. We were offered a couple of drinks vouchers but when we went to use them we could only have certain drinks to be quite honest I think they should have at least refunded or gave us some meal vouchers . Was such a shame as we had looked forward to our stay and now I feel even more stressed than before I went

Stayed here before and previously had issues with the air conditioning which again on this trip was broken leading to an uncomfortable nights sleep. Otherwise love this hotel, great pool, breakfast and service. Staff apologised and offered free drink etc but being able to sleep in a cool room is an essential for me so would make me think twice about booking again.

Hotel lovely. Room needs new carpet etc. electric points on wall were not fully secured. Air con not working but given free parking as a sweetener. Telephone in room not working so unable to call reception . Had to use my mobile to ring through to reception - twice…… as my request was not followed up first time so rang again after an hour of waiting. … . Request was for more tea bags as only one everyday tea bag in room- for two of us. Only 4 small milk pots to make tea in morning.
But …. We were staying for my daughter’s graduation and the note & chocolates left in the room for her were a lovely touch.

I checked in on an incredibly hot day when the air conditioning wasn't working as it should. The lady at reception moved my room without being asked to make sure the room I was checked into had air con. When I got to my room, it had clearly been prepared with the heat in mind - the curtains were closed against the direct sunlight and a fan was running - the room was lovely and cool, a nice reprieve from the heat outside. Staff are polite and incredibly helpful.

Very good location for the centre of the City, next to the Roman wall with the Cathedral on the other side. Peeved that the gym was free but the pool, sauna etc. was £10 per session, but that was a minor niggle. Bar food decent and fairly priced. Used as a base to explore Exeter and beyond.

Great stay at the Mercure. We had a double room that was generous on space, a very comfy bed and a lovely bathroom.
We came back to the bar late evening and the service was excellent.
It is perfectly placed to be able to walk into the centre of town or the quay in five minutes. It has its own car park which is a bonus too.

We’ve stayed here a few times and the location is great. The rooms are nice but we’ve always picked this hotel over others with better rooms due the pool and spa. I was really disappointed to learn guests now have to pay an additional £10 per person to use the facilities once at the hotel. Along with the pool fee and the £15 parking fee, plus breakfast charges it works out quite expensive and you could get a more luxurious room elsewhere. It’s a shame as we have enjoyed our stays at the Mercure but when you get less for more money it’s time to shop around.

Well situated hotel which I’ve stayed in before. Room was ok but the pillows really lumpy and uncomfortable and bed sheets bobbly feel. Very noisy as above entrance and staff lon break or guests smoking outside talking. Disappointing now costs £15 to park and also have to pay for pool use as this was included last stay. Not sure if I’d stay again.
