We just returned from our Portugal adventure and this was our favourite hotel by far! We loved its character, history, and staff. The location is great for exploring, with restaurants, cafes, and the waterfront close-by. We especially appreciated the glass of port and pastel de nata's awaiting you not only when you arrive, but when you return at the end of the day. Our room was beautifully updated, clean, and comfortable, and on the quiet back-side of the building. They treated us to a spacious and quiet top floor room to celebrate our anniversary. The breakfast was amazing, with excellent variety. The staff here were the real stars... the front desk fellows were so warm and welcoming and always eager to share a recommendation.

It was difficult to locate the main entrance due to construction that was not communicated prior to check-in. During check-in, the construction noise was extremely loud, and workers were actively using a saw for an extended period of time. I didn’t understand why the work couldn’t have paused briefly to allow guests to check in without the excessive noise, as it made communication at the front desk very difficult.

Additionally, the bottle of wine that was supposed to be in my room upon arrival was missing and was not delivered until my final night.

That said, the gentleman at the front desk was very kind and professional despite the circumstances.

We found this hotel wax in a perfect location for sightseeing around Porto. Staff was friendly and the hotel was clean and quiet. Having breakfast available gave is a great start to our day! Definitely will recommend to family or friends visiting your beautiful city.

The location is excellent. The hotel itself is lovely. The front desk staff are friendly and very helpful. Our corner room was very nice with a sitting room and windows that opened onto the square. The breakfast buffet was very good. This is the 2nd time we have stayed at the A.S. 1829 and we will come back again.

Perfectly positioned. A short walk from the river - everything else within 15 mins away and the best pastel de nata place 10 steps away. I went in a stormy Jan so no music in the square- regardless it was a great hotel and experience. Port and pastel de nata to welcome you, cute stationary shop behind check in, clean and comfortable rooms. Nothing negative to say. We had breakfast one morning, 9eur if booked the night before and a really excellent buffet breakfast with smoked salmon, great little breads and hot and cold selection. Such a charming and friendly hotel.

The hotel is in a good location within walking distance to many historic places, restaurants, and train station. The restaurant right next door is lively. The room was well equipped, clean, and there was a small balcony to sit outside with drinks. Our room didn't have the roadside view.

The hotel is not accessible by car. The front of the hotel is blocked for automobiles. But it’s not a bad walk, with luggages, it’s a challenge if you have more than 2 rolling luggages. Other than that it was an awesome stay. The free wine was good.

The A.S. 1829 is one of the nicest hotels we’ve ever stayed in. They did a wonderful drop working with the pen and stationary downstairs (open since 1829) to retain the aesthetics and character of the building. The room was elegant and spacious. The staff were wonderful. A 5 star stay for sure. The only criticism, and this is a tiny thing, is that the light switches are comically complicated. Very unclear which buttons control which lights and many don’t control any light at all. But all around this just made for some great comedy.

Our stay at this hotel was great. The staff was friendly and helpful. They went above and beyond when we arrived drenched from a torrential downpour. The glass of port and the welcome pastry were delicious. The room was confortable and the windows opened up on the courtyard…we even got to enjoy some live music from our room.

The location of this hotel is amazing! The street is filled with restaurants, shops, street artists and musical entertainment. There are no cars allowed, so you will need to be dropped off around the corner, but totally worth it.

Room was quite large by European standards and the bed was comfortable.

Staff was good, property was clean. We loved it.

A wonderful location, really central for everything, although the name of the hotel on the exterior is completely obscured by a large tree, making finding it almost impossible. The main entrance is hidden in the corner, where you have to walk past all the smokers sat at the tables from the next door cafe. The smoke drifts upwards to the rooms on the front of the hotel. The team were all lovely, happy to help and very welcoming. Room was a good size, with some quirks. The bathroom light switch was nowhere near the bathroom, smell and sound transfer through the connecting door to the room next door. The open wardrobe doesn't accommodate anything longer than a shirt or jacket. There was no plug for the sink, the paint was peeling from the tiles in the shower and the bath mat couldn't go on the floor in the bathroom, if you wanted to use the shower as there was no clearance under the shower door to pass over it. The bed was comfy and the shutters kept out the sound and light. It would be nice to have a bar to relax in downstairs. The team in the restaurant for dinner were wonderful and the food was great but the breakfast service was somewhat lack lustre with mosquitos on the pastries. Food was delicious though both hot and cold. Would stay again - knowing the querks to work around.

Beautiful property. Crisp linens, embroidered pillowcases, lovely toiletries. Welcomed with a glass of Port wine and a delicious Portuguese tart. The restaurant had fabulous food offered indoors or out on the patio. Location is perfect. 10 minute walk to the river where you can take Portuguese boat rides viewing the 6 bridges. Perfect for shopping, cycling and strolling through the cobble stone streets! Loved it!

Great location! Customer service was great, the location was so central with very nice nightly entertainment just down the street for everyone to enjoy. They welcome you every day with a delicious pastel de nata and a glass of wine. Breakfast was very good, the only thing we did not like was that room 209 had a very uncomfortable shower situation in a claw tub which was very slippery and water got everywhere! In talking to other people, they had a walk in shower.

Just wonderful, close to the heart of the historic part of Porto. Lots of restaurants, shopping, a few blocks to the beautiful riverfront, metro, and you can easily walk across the bridge to Gaia for more shopping, restaurants and the cable car. Room was very clean, we enjoyed the balcony and the nice breeze, At night there were street musicians playing saxophone & guitar. Staff was friendly, called taxis when we needed them, and even helped us with our baggage a few blocks away because there was some street construction next to hotel (which we couldn’t hear at all when windows were closed to our balcony) and the taxi couldn’t get as close as usual to hotel. There was an excellent Italian restaurant around the corner called Pizzaria Luzzo - highly recommend this hotel!

Loved this hotel and the breakfast!! Would definitely come back here or recommend! The staff is #1, clean, convenient.

My only complaint is that taking a shower in the claw bathtub is a nightmare!! I nearly fell over twice and had to grab onto the curtain for support. It's also awkward to shower in it since it is right next to the bed. Good for a couple but not so much if you are travelling with friends you don't want to be naked with. Besides that, great hotel!

Centrally located which allows one to come in and take quick breaks to beat the heat and freshen up (we traveled in late July and it was pretty hot and sunny). Everything is within walking distance. The location of the hotel is excellent. Other reviews mention the music in the square but our room was rear facing so could not hear anything. Breakfast was nice with a good range of sweet baked items and fresh fruit which varied. There was a fridge in the room with water each day. The shower was in the bedroom beside the bed with the toilet and sink in a separate en-suite. The shower glass was frosted on one side but was not private.

This has to be one of the best hotels in Porto and great location. I was offered an upgrade through being an Expedia platinum member and it was a corner unit with three balcony doors that opened to get fresh are and watch the live music that is right outside. The music does end by 10pm so nothing to worry about noise. The restaurant down stairs is great and the staff was phenomenal. They also offer port wine and pastries each day.

We arrived during a rare one-day power outage and the staff did everything they could to make our stay as pleasant as possible. The property was extremely clean and everyone on the staff extremely professional and helpful. Each morning's breakfast was absolutely wonderful and there was port wine and snacks in the lobby in the afternoon. We loved the central location in Porto, but it can be somewhat noisy at night coming from the cafes and restaurants nearby. Overall, I would stay here again without hesitation.

Amazing hotel! Perfect location for getting around Porto- we rarely needed a taxi! Quickly to the waterfront. Room was great size with seating area and room divider. There was a little bar area with tea/coffee, mini-fridge, robes, and slippers- perfect for a 4 night stay. Loved that the toilet and shower were separate. Favorite part was the cute terrace area off the room! The weather didn’t really cooperate so we couldn’t use it as much as we would have liked but it was lovely to have the option! Staff were helpful and friendly! Would definitely recommend and return back to!

Stay was very nice and location is great. If you are bothered by noise, there are cafes below and there is music and singing in the evening. Not sure if there are quieter rooms available. We faced the cafes. it did not bother us.

This is a great hotel. We were there in winter so it wasn’t too busy and we were upgraded to a larger room that overlooked the main square. We were able to open our Juliet balcony doors and listen to the street performers from our the comfort of our room. We drove and arriving and parking was challenging because of the subway construction but once we were settled everything was fantastic.

We had a fantastic week's stay at the Porto AS 1829 Hotel. The room was clean and comfortable; the staff were extremely friendly and spoke perfect English; and the location was fantastic. Our bathroom could have done with a little maintenance - there was a bit of a leak at the bottom of the shower head, and from the sink's cold water tap - but this didn't detract from our stay. We didn't opt for the breakfast as it was a little out of our price range, and unfortunately didn't have lunch or dinner at the hotel, but the restaurant looked clean and inviting. We would highly recommend this beautiful hotel in the heart of the historic city centre!

This is a great property in the middle of Porto (Old Town). It has excellent restaurants around, great walking street for small shopping and great location. Near Douro River (5 minute walk) where a bunch of restaurants are river front. The staff was very accommodating.
