We stayed 1 night of 3 nights here and wish we had done it all at Cale. While it doesn’t have huge extra amenities it is clean , rooms big, view incredible. Feels like home.
Could not be more central. Everything is within a few minutes walk. The staff (thanks Chris and others) knock themselves out to make you feel at home. Breakfast is great and the welcome discussion and orientation at arrival over complimentary port is fantastic . When we come back we will stay here again.

This small guesthouse is a gem! Our twin double room had a large sitting area and was probably more than 400 sq ft.
The communication before arrival was excellent. The breakfast was very good and they allowed us to check our luggage while we explored the city.

Located in an excellent, central area. As similar reviews noted, it was fairly noisy when someone was walking past the bedroom door due to the wooden floorboards. Breakfast was a nice selection of pastries/ meats/ cheeses and hot drinks. Would stay again and recommend to family and friends

I had a wonderful stay at Cale Guest House. The location is perfect—so accessible to many of Porto's top sightseeing spots, making it easy to explore the city. The view from my room was exceptional, and the rooftop area added an extra special touch for enjoying the night scenery. The house itself is old but beautiful, filled with character, and the staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful.
A couple of small downsides were that there was no elevator, which might be challenging for those with heavy luggage, and no refrigerator in the room. However, these were minor inconveniences, and overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. I'd highly recommend Cale Guest House to anyone looking to experience Porto’s charm!

Cale Guest House is a heritage property with many stairs. We knew this prior to staying, but still a lot of climbing. The amenities were simple, yet met our needs.
The staff were great, the rooms tidy and clean and beds were absolutely the best. Breakfast was quite adequate and tasty.
The location near the river was ideal for dining, but crazy busy for the end of September.

All was great, lovely welcome when checking in. 1 mix up with a girl who wouldn’t let us get breakfast at 7.45 when we had arranged with the lady the day before as we were going on a trip. But lovely stay.

The place is not close to the main areas, but it’s not bad with an Uber ride. There is no sign, but easily recognized due to it’s red brick exterior. Staff were AMAZING and helpful and the area out back was nice to sit in with a glass of local wine. The basic room is VERY small with no chairs. The bathroom is beautiful, but the shower is not functional due to its small size. You literally can’t wash yourself without opening the glass door. I understand that we paid for a basic room, but with the price, I would have expected something bigger. There is also no coffee pot or water in the room. The room has a small fridge that has water and a few drinks for 2 euros each.
Overall, it’s a beautiful property and the staff are an asset.

Lovely place to stay and a great location in Porto. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. We only had one minor issue with our A/C unit but it was quickly dealt with by the front desk staff. Would highly recommend.

This property didn’t disappoint. Staff were so friendly and helpful in recommending places to eat. Room was quite basic but functional and spotlessly clean. Breakfast was fantastic. Freshly baked rolls and croissants and freshly squeezed orange juice. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff who were always available to help in any way they could. The property is excellently located. Lots of steps in the property with no lift option so wouldn’t be good for less mobile travellers. A welcome drink of locally produced port was a nice touch too. I would definitely recommend this guest house for anybody visiting Porto. We loved our stay there.

Excellent location in the centre of the old district. Very good breakfast. Room was clean and as is typical of houses in the area has steep stairs to all rooms so if an issue it’s best to request a lower room but not a problem for us. Highly recommended.

I just wanted to say thank you for a wonderful stay at the Cale Guest House, from the very beginning to the end of our stay could not have been better. Vania and Diogo were the most pleasant people to have greeted us, set up a first class breakfast with a high quality fresh squeezed OJ, mini egg tarts famous in Portugal, among other things, along with a comfortable bed with room cleaning every day. I must say that my planning with two other cities involved in our trip I was most concerned about this stay, without hesitation I would highly recommend this place as a wonderful place to call home. If you can walk the hills of Porto you don't have to worry about a few stairs to work off the extensive restaurants selection in the neighborhood

The front desk clerks were absolutely wonderful in giving assistance with directions, things to see, and a taxi when I needed it.
The rooms are a little daunting to get up to (after walking Porto all day) when you are on the 3rd and 4th floors.
Breakfast was terrific! The service was excellent and they even have a little to offer for spirits.
The only upset I have is that I picked my tablet and all of my chargers inside the hood of my pack. I was getting ready for the Camino and wanted them secure in case the weather changed. Needless to say I left it in the room. I called twice and was told they were no where to be found. I wouldn’t leave a bad review for such service if I didn’t know they were either taken or mistakenly tossed out. I’ve never gotten a call back about it. It’s been 3 days.
The cleaning ladies also moved my pack at one point and broke one of the clasps without saying a word. Beware the cleaning people and what you leave while out and about!

We stayed two nights and Luisa checked us in, very promptly. She even carried our suitcases to our room, which was nice as we arrived tired from our trip. The view down the street toward the river was super and our room, #5, seemed much larger than normal. We’d stay again next time in Porto!

Great Host and excellent location
I travelled with my son to watch the Champions League final and wanted somewhere central. Cale Guest House is a great location and just a short walk to the metro and excellent restaurants/bars down by the river. Nice and spacious rooms. Pedro is an attentive host and nothing was too much trouble. A decent continental breakfast was just the thing needed to start our day.

Cale Guest House was the perfect location and place to stay for my mid-Portugal stay in Porto. Apart from the room being a little bit of a climb up the stairs (made for a great workout), the room and breakfast was great! Very safe and great location for wandering the city. Alice at the reception was kind and spent many afternoons chatting with me as I took a break from exploring. Not only did we connect, Alice shared some great insights of Porto history and the country as a whole, and even taught me how to properly pronounce Ferreira. :) The breakfast was filling and full of a variety of food that left me full enough to wander for hours before getting peckish. I would definitely return to stay again.

We stayed over the New Year (2019/2020) for 5 nights and struggle to find any fault in this guest house. Above all, the service provided by the three working in the reception area stands out at the very highest levels. From the moment we arrived, they were friendly, helpful and no request was too much effort. They made suggestions on places to visit, eat, drink and when bookings were needed, they would make all the necessary arrangements. As an example, nn New Years Day, they phoned around until they found a place for us to hire bikes. Every place recommended was great. And always welcoming everytime we got back to the guest house. A hot drink and a piece of cake or fruit was available. A truly relaxing experience.

Air conditioning / heat was not consistent and there are no blankets (just sheets). I had to wear 3 layers and ended up using a pillow and my pea coat as \"blankets\". We did not receive the room we booked, either.

This was a great place in a great location! Good view and really nice staff! The breakfast is a good cold breakfast but the same every day. The room we stayed in with city view was large and beautiful and affordable. The only thing is that the place could use a few small things like new towels (not dirty just quite old), the shower fixture was a bit broken. These things are made up for with the hardworking kind staff.

Wonderful location and staff,(truly like family) at Cale Guest House! Room was large, comfortable and spotlessly-clean. Breakfast in the morning was well-prepared and presented. Cale is literally a 20 minute walk from most attractions you will desire to experience. While Pedro and Alice were both very helpful, hospitable and professional, Alice was an absolute delight! Our family has adopted Alice as our honourary Portuguese family member. Obrigado!!

This is a very old property in the centre of the old town. There are no lifts but staff will help you with the stairs if you struggle. It's full of character and the rooms we had were huge, clean and airy. There's air conditioning for the night time - you probably don't want windows open at the front because of the noise from the nearby restaurants.
The staff can't do enough to help you with anything you need, from checking train times to recommending a restaurant. They are extremely professional and friendly and by the time you leave you'll feel like one of the family.

This guest house is wonderful! The friendly staff have many suggestions to help you acclimate, and are happy to make reservations for you. They offer a map and several ideas for main sites all within walking distance. There are many treats, tea and coffee available around the clock, and a generous breakfast with warm Pastéis de nata! One could not ask for a better location or more welcoming environment. And Porto is so lovely!

Great spot, aim for a lower floor
The Cale Guest House is perfectly located near the river, restaurants, and action. It was tricky to find. Service and attention were wonderful. The breakfast spread was quite good. In this historic old building we were on the top floor, 58 steps up, with no elevator. Not for the person with bad knees or who shies away from stairs. Creaky floors in rm 7 (attic) can wake up a sleeper. Parking is in a public lot a block downhill. I'd stay again but only on a low floor.

Extremely friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable staff who went out of their way to offer and provide assistance with various needs or recommendations, directions, and reservations, as well as general information about the Portuguese life, history, and culture. The central location is also excellent—in a walking distance to major sights and the metro and train station. We were easily able to do a few out-of-towb day trips on our own and take the trolley to the Atlantic coast. We also enjoyed the cozy, comfortable size of the facility and the good breakfast with occupants of the other six rooms. Highly recommend this place!

We had a great time here. Our host was incredibly friendly and helpful. He also made the breakfast for the hotel. It was one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had at a hotel. The room was simple, clean, and spacious. It wasn’t anything extravagant, but it was comfortable and they provide everything you need. This is right in town and an awesome location. I would absolutely stay here again and hope to be back!

We loved our four-night stay at Cale Guest House!
The staff could not have been more welcoming! They went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed (from extra water to reservations) and to make us feel right at home in Porto.
The location was central and convenient ... but *everything* in Porto is within walking distance!
[Regarding the lack of a lift in this beautiful building: if you come to Portugal and are not able to do tons of walking, and/or are not able to climb steep hills and lots of stairs, I’d *highly* recommend making additional accommodations for yourself, or you will miss out on much of this gorgeous country!]
Our room was on the top floor and faced the back courtyard. We felt it more than adequate for the fabulous rate! Bed was large, lighting (electric and ambient) was ample, bathroom was modern and clean ... we didn’t hear a peep at night save for seagulls faintly calling to each other (one benefit of having a room on the top floor, I suppose).
The breakfast was wonderful - not sure how they managed to create such a spread from a tiny kitchen! The freshly squeezed orange juice was always amazing, and they put out a lovely selection of jams, meats and cheeses, pastries, etc. Plus, cookies were available ‘round the clock!
We couldn’t find a single thing to complain about (ok ... it *was* a bit hard to do those stairs after a delicious meal ... but we needed the exercise!) and miss our second home already!

We had the most amazing experience at the Cale house from the time we were greeted by Francisco.
Francisco greeted is so warmly and sat down with us to give us touring and restaurant suggestions.
Our room was amazing as we overlooked he church and a wonderful view of the street. The Cale House is ideally located and we could walk to all the important sites with wonderful restaurants close by.

We were welcomed by Pedro who did a great job in making us confortable. It is worth noting that this is a very old house with 3 floors and only stairs with no elevators. Nevertheless, The bed and bathroom were better than we thought. There is also considerable street noise. Very close to everything so it is a tradeoff. Breakfast was well attended and reasonable.

Great staff which makes up for some of the quirks. No lift but staff volunteerd to take cases up and even bring them down again when leaving. Our room (4) was pretty basic but had everything needed and even English speaking TV channels. We saw other rooms which were a lot more spacious but perhaps more expensive, we didn't ask.
Breakfast was just enough, not a great selection but plenty and the view down the hill is lovely. You can see right down while eating.

I can't add anything new to what has already been said. It's a charming building, nicely designed with very on-point decor and ridiculously well placed for the Ribeira distract, the port houses on the other side of the Douro and all the great attractions of this absolutely brilliant city.
The real selling point however is the staff. The two Franciscos and Bruno couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful.
We're definitely coming back to Porto before everyone else gets in on the secret and unless we win the lottery and The Yeatman comes into our price bracket and can't see why I'd bother looking anywhere other than here.

Nice hotel in a great location and super informative and friendly staff. Only slight let down was the maid service which was poor, literally made the bed each day and that was about it. But other than that would certainly recommend both the hotel and Porto which is magnificent.

From the welcome we received to the day we departed, the staff at this great, independent B&B couldn't have done more to help us. Great location just a few minutes walk to the quay and round the corner from Rua de Flores with its bars, restaurants and shops.Room was on the top floor - 64 steps, no lift! - and clean with great views towards the river. Breakfast is continental and very fresh, plus help yourself throughout the day to hot drinks and cake. The staff were brilliant, lots of information about what to see to maximise our weekend in Porto, recommendations for dinner and Fado, getting out to the beach and local restaurants. Would definitely stay there again!
