Terrible place

When we arrived, they had no record of our booking. We were supposed to be on a B&B package but the kitchen wasn't open and we couldn't even have a cup of tea as they said the kettle was broken!!! Eventually booked somewhere else which was great. Contacted hotels.com and they couldn't even contact the hotel by phone. All in all, and absolute shame!! We'll obviously never book again to stay there?

The property was beautiful very quiet location.
However, the lamps were dusty, the shower and sink had loads of long dark hair in the plug holes. There were sachets of half used complementary shower jells half used . It was billed as b&b totaly unsuitable for diabetics being two Panna chocolate one each two open bars, one each one apple one banana and two boxes of cereal with a few sachets of milk to go with it. No cups to make tea/coffee although there were plenty. The dishes were sticky and chipped disgusting. There was no food available in the evening at the bar , no phone charging available. We would not stay there again. I have photograph evidence

Friendly staff and clean rooms, but no restaurant service available. Clean and comfortable room. Continental breakfast not served until 8 am - I needed to leave by 8 am, so I could not really comment on the quality of breakfast as I could only grab a glass of orange juice and a slice of toast before leaving.
The Hotel was extremely quiet - probably due to accessibility during major roadworks on the A303.

Sadly, the accommodation was neglected and in need of some tlc.

The sink in the bathroom was cracked, and there was no light bulb above the bathroom mirror. The chair to sit up to the desk to work, had a collapsed bottom and was not fit for purpose.

The cleanliness was poor, particularly in the bathroom where there was old soap suds on the handrails in the shower.

On a positive note the bed was comfortable.

Showed up at 7 pm on a Sunday evening, having made the booking on Expedia and having driven all day, only to be advised that they do not take overnight bookings on a Sunday.
The staff were dismissive and the one on reception continued looking at her phone and offered no apology, we left and they locked the door behind us.
People need to be aware of this and not to book for a Sunday stay.

I checked in at 8pm
Room was freezing cold, bathroom window wide open, bathroom window curtain hanging, hooks broken.
Window looking out onto main car park !
Checked in by a lady who contributed to look at her phone ! When I asked why I had no heating in my room and it was freezing, she mumbled a man was coming tomorrow to fix it ! Even though it came on in the morning !

I asked prior for a room with a bath, no response and after arrival only shower. I asked for a bath and this was sorted.
Room was cold, poor lighting, spiders everywhere, no bath mat ..it was very slippery, no soap at all provided.

Ok, I booked because of price, but the room photos looked good and it was rated on hotels.com as 8.0+. We booked the deluxe double and were looking forward to a comfortable night breaking up a drive from Cornwall to Cambridge. We arrived and were shown to a tired room that looked nothing like the picture. The bathroom was not clean and there was a sugar packet in the middle of the floor, obviously attention to detail was lacking. Then I sat on the bed, it was terrible, the mattress had collapsed and felt like it may have been supplied when the pub was built. We went back to reception to be offered the only other room they had, a twin on the first floor. The carpet on the way to the room needed a good clean but we hoped the room would at least be comfortable. Alas a similar story with the room and the beds may have been worse than the original. Back to reception, having already been told on the way to the second room, “nothing we can do you’ll need to take it up with the third party booking service”. I showed the picture of the room as booked on hotels.com and was told “yeah, they always show that picture, I’ve asked them to change it but they haven’t” then “you did only pay £36.29 for the room, they’re normally £120” actually we paid £45 so looks like hotels.com take 20% commission on that booking. As it was only £45 I decided a good night sleep was worth more than that, so chose to continue the journey and drive another 4 hours and get home. If I had paid £120…

Arrived at the property, unimpressed with the pile of carpets and furniture rotting and stinking in the car park.
Show to our deluxe room, absolutely disgusting, every surface was covered in a thick layer of dust that you could write in, stained carpets and cushions, old chipped and mismatched furniture that looked like it had seen better days. Cobwebs everywhere there's no way these couldn't have been seen they were hanging from the wall's.
Didnt stay went and handed the keys back to reception.

There were no toiletries in the shower; fortunately we had taken our own. When we checked in we told the lady dealing with us that we would want to eat. She didnt mention until we went to dine that the chef was off and rather than the advertised items on the menu the choice was burger or pie with chips or curry. If we hadnt had a pre dinner drink we would have driven elsewhere.
The place was very run down and the view from our first floor room was a tiny fenced area full of weeds and a traffic cone.
The bedroom walls are paper thin and during thr night someone in the adjoining room was defecating in his toilet about 4 feet from where I lay.
The wifi was not working and at breakfaat time neither was the coffee machine.
I guess we expected better having stayed there some years ago in a ground floor room with its own little patio at the rear. Those patios are clearly unused as the weeds there are 6 ft high.
We chatted to a local who described the place as 'ghastly'.

The property is located in a pretty little village.
Very conveniently located for local atttactions.
It is let down by its state of repair & lack of maintainance. The relief manager in charge during our stay was very pleasant & friendly but appeared to be struggling with things - coffee nachibe breaking down, lack of towels, staffing etc. it didn’t affect our stay as we enjoyed being there however things could be vastly improved.

On arrival it was obvious the room hadnt been hoovered at all. The man did apoligise and go and get a hoover to do it. I moved the lamp and a dust outline was there. Tv didnt work and wifi wouldnt connect the whole stay. Metal lump where toilet roll holder should have been, no lightbulb in the mirror light, hook on main door lose and hanging so couldnt be used, door stiff and had to fight it to shut or open it. Door to bathroom was sitting diagnally badly ...so wouldnt shut at all. Because of cleanliness we didnt dare risk breakfast, so we can not comment on that. The bathroom was up some stairs but the window was on the floor, so you had to close the curtains if you wanted to use the toilet or shower or people in the garden could have seen us.
A really disappointing stay and unfortunately we will not be returning to this venue.

Disappointing stay

We looked forward to our visit but sadly were disappointed. We arrived at 3pm but were told we couldn't check in as the system was down. Completely understand things like this can happen but when we asked when it would be possible we were just told no idea, then told they wouldn't be serving food that night (a Friday) as the chef had gone home and then the barman disappeared. At 4.30pm a long standing resident said he could show us to our room. The towels and bedding were clean but the carpet was filthy and the bathroom just had the empty toiletry bottles from a previous resident. The continental breakfast the next day was fine. Perhaps we just caught them on a bad day but after our experience, we won't return.

Quite a few cobwebs in bathroom and bedroom all low and floor level so could be reached
The laundry hadn’t arrived so we only got 1 large and one small towel the staff were very apologetic and when we went to breakfast we were given towels
Continental breakfast was good but unfortunately coffee machine didn’t work but was fixed that day
Also had r got any decaf teabags but I always carry my own so not a problem

The young staff are not welcoming the mature ones are there was no tables to eat so was told we could eat outside then they managed to find us one the first table we was going to sit on we was told was reserved however no one sat on it except staff we only had 1 bath towel and no one turned up for breakfast by the time someone had to get in Kenny which was good of him had to wait by then we had had enough and left

Stayed here for a one night stopover. Ideally located off the A303, all the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Evening meal and breakfast food, everything was good. Our room however let it down, window blind broken and obvious it was. So our room was very bright in the morning. The mattress on the bed is beyond redemption, springs gone in a couple of places. It caused a very uncomfortable sleep and it really soured the stay. Furniture and carpet appear to fairly new and though the bedroom is small the room good value. Bathroom is a little tired but acceptable. Hopefully the owners invest in some new mattresses.

We were checked in by a very welcoming lady (Sharon I think) after arriving quite late. We knew that breakfast was continental and not full English but after a good night's sleep we were very disappointed to find that bread was in short supply, there was no more butter after 2 slices and marmalade was nowhere to be seen. At this point 2 stars at most were forecast. Getting staff seemed a problem but that day a chap called Vince arrived as a temporary barman/breakfast organiser. He had a wealth of experience in the pub trade and it showed. Although planned help didn't arrive for him he did a great job of improving things for the next couple of days. Also the chef ensured that we had an excellent meal on the last evening of our break. So overall not perfect but much better after a bad beginning.

Stayed 5 nights. Room decor tired. Had to ask for carpet to be hoovered as it clearly hadn’t been. There was a shortage of bath towels for 2 days as they had not come back from the laundry company so extra hand towels were provided. On 2nd day a member of staff took some from an unused room for us.
Hadn’t realised until day 2 that we needed to register our car details for the car park on a computer at reception as we were not told on checking in and found out by chance.
On our 4th breakfast I had to ask for mugs and spoons but it wasn’t the usual staff member on duty.
Breakfast continental as advertised but simple.
The receptionist and usual breakfast lady were very helpful and pleasant.

Walnut Tree is okay, no more than 3*. The staff were friendly and accommodating however there were issues that shouldn't have even been present.
Upon arrival it was evident that my room No.1 had not been cleaned. The sheets had been changed but the carpet was covered in \"bits\", there were cobwebs and the bathroom had hair in the bath tub, on the floor, lotion in the tub, half an earring, soap scum all over the sink taps and floor and the loo hadn't even been flushed (gross). I couldn't put up with it so told the woman who checked me in - Sharon?? - and she seemed mortified and disappointed with her \"cleaning staff\". She came and cleaned the bathroom herself and quickly hoovered and made it habitable but it obviously wasn't the standard it was meant to be. This isn’t an expensive hotel but cleanliness is a non negotiable.
The sheets were clean but the mattress was uncomfortable, the curtains don't block out much light and the ceiling lights were bare bulbs - no shades.
I am grateful for Sharon fixing the problems, but i wish there hadn't been said problems to begin with after a 2.5hr drive to get there.

Peaceful location. Good bar food though didn't seem to cater for Vegans. Room spacious but very tired. Beds saggy and uncomfortable. Ceiling dripped water when upstairs used shower and signs of staining so obviously a regular occurrence. Shower good but fan didn't work and clogged with dust. Breakfast was supposed to start at 8 but no sign of any staff until 8.30. Coffee machine unavailable and all very self service. Overall very disappointing, would not stay again.

One mile off the A303 and 7 miles to Sherborne.

The hotel (!) was serving coke from shop bought Cola bottles; we ordered food - the starter arrived 30 minutes after we ordered; our mains 1 hour after we ordered- which we simple ham egg and chips and scampi and chips. The room wasn’t cleaned after our first night. The bathroom tiles were mouldy. The bedroom hadn’t been dusted in ages. A film of dust on lampshades and tv table. The door to the room which was on the courtyard was dirty and covered in cobwebs.
The outside tables hadn’t been cleaned in weeks, nor the ashtrays emptied.The coffee machine in the dining room was dirty

This property subscribes to the Basil Faulty School of Hoteliers. Light bulbs missing from fixtures or not working at all. A double room that you needed to climb over the other person to get into bed. Nearly half of the dinner menu was \"orf\" and the broccoli & stilton soup was out of date catering packet at best. Nice rooms. Good location. However, cleanliness wasnt fantastic. It was acceptable; however, the bathroom was not fully clean, there was a dirty tissue on the floor, and (most disgustingly) breakfast crockery was not clean. Most staff lovely, except for the gentleman who was working on Sunday (tall, with auburn hair). I simply asked for another bowl and it seemed like too much trouble to him. It took four or five of us to ask him to empty the drip tray on the coffee machine, as he kept going into hiding. He didnt even ask \"how was your stay?\" Or \"was everything okay?\" on checkout. He left a sour taste and the cleanliness slightly dampened what was otherwise a lovely property. With better management, the place could be LUSCIOUS.

Low cost; great value for money

This is a low-cost hotel and thus one does not expect 5-star amenities. However, it represents great value for money. Easy parking, comfortable bed, spacious room, lots of hot water in the bathroom with an old-fashioned shower head that delivers a lot of water (unlike some of these modern miniature nozzles that just trickle a small amount of water).
Breakfast is minimal -- just \"continental\" cold goods -- bread, croissants, cereal, juice, sliced ham and cheese. The beverage machine provides a good variety of coffee and hot chocolate.
The staff are friendly and helpful, but be aware there's nobody there after about 10pm so you need to find your way into the lobby at the rear and pick up a phone to get help checking in.

To many flies, no cooked breakfast contienental breakfast. Bananas were brown thin bread croissants hard, and staff aloof.

Two night stay from Wales

A warm welcome from Alice, told where our room was, found it to be warm & comfortable.
Chose to eat in restaurant which had a good menu, quite retro! Food served was ok but lacking in oomph, second night food was poor, tasty chop a tiny amount of cider & apple sauce, plain boiled potatoes, microwaved peas, a sad plate as a so called special!! Only three choices of desserts, Breakfast however was good, a little more organisation would create a smoother service, lack of attention from staff caused a long wait....
A lovely little pub/hotel, could be so much more, a deep clean, a menu revamp, some tlc & this could be a little gem both for locals & visitors.
Good luck to the new manager, we would visit again.....just to see what changes have been implemented!

Great small hotel with great restaurant.

For a village pub this place is very good and recommended. Lovely old building, good location, well stocked bar and excellent food. Best chips I've had for many, many years, and porton sizes sufficient to make desert unnecessary. In our room the mattress was old and needs replacing. We were presumably too far from the router to get wi-fi in the room, and the shower, though adequate, has the head fixed to the wall which is not perfect.

A good location and room was excellent. The first breakfast morning was brilliant with 2 staff and everything was fine. The second morning there was only 1 staff serving and they had not replenished cereal choices or condiments. Milk had to be replaced as it curdled in my coffee and the replacementvwas yhe same so coffee was left. The menu sheet was missing but that didn't seem to matter after I asked for porridge which was not good (not cooked long enough) we were not asked of we wanted anything cooked at all. My husband had the last 2 weetabix left in the basket. We made do with toast, no marmalade portions left and left thinking yesterday much better. Sadly will not be returning

A little disappointing, the service was ok, the food was excellent. we had no light in our bathroom for the duration of our stay, we had reported this several times. the walls were paper thin, you we disturbed by other room noises.

A “tired” country pub come hotel in a quiet area.

I booked this property as it had recent 9/10 reviews and was ideally sited for a quiet break to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary weekend.
To my surprise the “quiet” hotel had live music on the Friday night until late which was a singer/guitarist sited 2 yards from the foot of the stairs leading to accommodation where we were the first room making sleep totally impossible. When I spoke to person in the bar indicating that I expected some form of compensation as not “quiet” as advertised the response was that they have live music once a month so we were unlucky!
Room was in need of a revamp, carpets and most fittings fairly worn.
Maid service was poor. Forgot to replace towels on day 2, when mentioned to a staff member a lady appeared 10 minutes later with them “I didn't do your room” rather than “sorry they were forgotten”. Bath and sink clearly not cleaned each day.
Cooked breakfast was good but the staff attending to us were fairly aloof and not at all engaging.
Location is very much “off the beaten track” so be prepared to drive some distance for food and the like (evening meals on offer didn’t look too appetising when we saw the 8 or so people using the pub of an early evening).
In summary 2/10 for “friendliness”, 8/10 for breakfast and 3/10 for cleanliness = 4/10 overall.
If you decide to stay in this “quiet” location, ring first in case you are “unlucky” to be staying on the live music night!

Lovely quaint & quiet place to stay, very relaxing. Room was lovely but it would have been nice to have 2 chairs but we couldn’t fault the room. Bed was comfortable Breakfast was great. Very friendly service. Definitely go back there again.

It was clean; the bed was comfortable and breakfast was good. However, there was a mold smell in the ensuite and mold on the blind. As it's an old building, noises from other rooms like walking, flushing and using plugs can be heard easily. Not much natural light reached the room.

We stayed here a couple of nights for a wedding down the road. Really nice little pub with rooms. Rooms were clean. Linen was clean and fresh. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. Overall had a really nice couple of days stay.
