If you're looking for a stay that feels like a genuine step back in time, Jawi Peranakan Mansion is a total gem. It's less like a hotel and more like a beautifully preserved piece of Penang's history.

I stayed in one of the Mansion Rooms: The rooms are stunning, filled with character and old-world charm. While the beds were firm, they were still very comfortable.

Being in a historic building, you'll hear some road noise in the mansion rooms, but it didn't bother me-it just felt like part of the city's energy.

The pool is a wonderful. It's the perfect, quiet oasis to cool off after a humid day of exploring.

The staff are incredibly lovely and welcoming. Plus, the location is ideal-you're right in the heart of George Town's best food and culture.

Authentic, charming, and perfectly located. I'd go back in a heartbeat. Probably one of my favourite places in a long time.

While the mansion's architecture and design are truly beautiful, the actual stay experience fell short of expectations. The ground-floor room is particularly noisy, with street-level sounds like traffic and conversations being a constant disturbance. Adding to this, the proximity of the windows to the street meant that opening them for fresh air was not an option, as passersby were literally right outside. The staff were functional but not particularly warm or welcoming. Given these issues, I cannot recommend this hotel, especially for those seeking a peaceful retreat in Penang.

Unfriendly stay and reception.

We booked 2 rooms for 3 nights as 2 couples for holiday trip. We expected a cultural peranakan experience in a mansion. But the moment we stepped into the premise, we realised we made the mistake booking this hotel. The receptionist, Mr Muiz checking us in was cold, unwelcoming and unhelpful. When I asked what was some of the interesting places to visit around there, he responded that \"everything is interesting in Penang.\" Mr Muiz whom we later was surprised to learn he was in fact the hotel manager, When we checked into the room, it was rather dark and bare; no wardrobe, no hangers. You have to be on all four to use the hotel safe as it was placed at the very bottom of a small cupboard. No telephone, no kettle nor basic coffee/tea facility in the room, no compendium to explain what guest services were available in the hotel. In fact, we only learned from the night staff that the drinks in the refrigerator were complimentary which the hotel manager did not bother to tell us. The TV was not working when we checked in. When we told the manager that the cable channels were also not working and when it could we expect that to be fixed, he told us that he had already informed the cable company who would come within 24 hours to fix it. The next day I checked with him, he responded \"you know this is Malaysia and you won't know when\". It was only on the last day, we were told by one of the staff it was finally fixed. Would not recommend this hotel to my friends.

Beautiful mansion

We loved our stay in this beautiful old mansion building. Our room was huge and the antique furniture added to the beautiful decor. The room was very comfortable and clean, but the air conditioning was not very strong and we needed to sleep with a loud fan overnight. The lap pool was a welcome addition and the hotel was an easy walk to lots of great restaurants and to the colonial centre.

What a wonderful property

Saw some previous negative reviews a out this property after my booking. After checked in, all those negative reviews I read were already out of the window .

From the room to the front desk and staff, everything and everyone was so surprisingly friendly and comfortable. The location is great too. Walking distance to everything in Georgs town.

Relaxed and pleasant stay at Jawi P Mansion

We loved our room next to the pool. The property is well maintained and really connects to the heritage experience. Nice lap pool which we used to cool off several times. Staff are extremely pleasant and provided everything we needed. Walkable to some sights and easy pick up by Grab when we needed it. Spoke to a member of staff about breakfast and they said they hoped to bring back this option in the future. A very relaxed stay and would definitely recommend Jawi Peranakan Mansion.

Stayed in the Mansion Villa. The property and room decor is quite unique. But the room itself is basically right up against the street. This means you can hear every motorbike, car and other vehicle passing by. If you are a light sleeper this room is not for you. I left after one night and checked into another hotel because I could not sleep. I'm not sure that other rooms on the property would have been much quieter. Also, there was no \"do not disturb\" sign, and housekeeping staff attempted to enter the room while I was inside. The room could use a bit more cleaning, especially the rugs. Location is good.

It's the first hotel that I've checked out earlier than expected because I couldn't sleep at all during my first night. The room is really spacious and rather clean. But they don't have proper pillow; the pillow was extremely thin. The aircon wasn't cooling the room enough as well, so I was perspiring. In addition, the property is beside a main road and so it's always very noisy. I think the place should have sound proof window and good pillows.

I do understand that it's an old mansion but if it is being converted to a hotel, much more should be done.

The staff are just wonderful, in particular Priya and Steph, who gave us useful directions on eating places and shopping, and were just so obliging. Great to watch the video on the restoration works.

It's Penang, traffic is hell and parking is not plenty. And it is Georgetown so road is narrow. Those things are the worst of the entire stay BUT I find no fault with the hotel. It was quiet, the quickest, easiest check in I have ever had - EVER. My husband had to find tiny spot by their entrance so we can drop our luggage, all the while traffic is flowing inches away. They have staff to carry the bags upstairs where our room is located. Then he has to go find parking, luckily right next to the hotel, there was a spot but to get to that spot he had to drive around to find the street leading to it. All the while hoping no one else has taken that spot. The hotel itself was so quiet, I hardly ever see any but 2 occupants while passing the entrance. The pool was refreshing from the heat, it was during the time when they had heat problems. Yes, the stench from all those open storm sewer wafting up it gets really hard to enjoy anything, even while eating at those restaurants nearby. But that's just how Malaysia is. I wish I can pluck the hotel and put it somewhere else in Penang where the traffic is not as crazy and parking is not a stressful to get. Otherwise, the room was clean, the bathroom was huge and clean and hot water works and my boys love the upstairs bed. We didn't hear any noise from the nearby mosque. Actually we slept really well.

The rooms are large and comfortable with characterful decorations. Staff are available and able to give local information. There were water and coffee available and the pool was nice to have a cooling dip, though the poolside was not great for all day chilling out.
Super close to the town but not full of backpacker noise and hipster establishments.
The wifi in the room was weak and in an old building some noise such as heavy footsteps carries from other rooms

Nice 3 star hotel with big rooms for a big family. The location is within walking locations about 15 mins walk to places like Penang street, 10 mins to a nearby 7-11.

At night there is this place called Supper which serves good Taiwanese fusion nearby.

The pool was a great addition for the kids.

One bad thing is this place isn’t good for light sleepers. The mosque prayers will affect you for a short while in the morning. Rooms near the road will also be loud as cars drive pass at night. Tip: bring a air freshener or the lobby could include it as the air was abit stale especially at the lobby.

But overall it’s a good place to stay if you aren’t a light sleeper.

Staff, Muiz (sorry if i did not get his name right), was very attentive and hospitable for most parts of our stay.

We encountered a faulty water heater, which was a bummer, because the stay would have been amazing. Muiz did attend to the issue but unfortunately it requires a new unit to be replaced and it was over the weekend.

Overall stay was good. clean, cozy and homely.

What a lovely place to stay. The colonial feel mixes seemlessly with beautiful Malay antiques, making the hotel feel like a very beautiful museum, and yet everything is so comfortable and the brilliantly kind and attentive staff make you feel totally at home without every invading your privacy. This is a really special place. Breakfast was ace too and the shower was very much 21st century. Wonderful.

Rooms situated on the ground floor would tend to be less quiet as breakfast is served in the dining hall right outside the rooms. So those who prefer to sleep in should request for a room on level 1, subject to availability of course. Overall a very enjoyable stay!

The design was superb. The rooms were beautifully finished. The hotel had lovely touches. However, in some places it looked not quite finished (the side to a work shop or new dining area) as you look about the window. Also, the bed was pushed up against the window and therefore could not easily open the wooden slat shades without first moving the bed.

Beautiful building with atmospheric touches. The staff were all absolutely perfect - so friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good and the hotel felt very homely and comforting. However, the bed was very hard and the call to prayer is quite intrusive. 5am and 9pm from a loud tannoy nearby. Not sure why they have to shout their prayers so loud? ! So our sleep was not as good as it could have been, otherwise I would have given this hotel 5 stars

Such a shame that I was left with a bad impression on this lovely property. The staff were kind and hard working. I left tips and a gift for them. I received my confirmation of reservation for 4 nights paid in advance and it indicated that the reservation desk closed at midnight and customers arriving after were required to check in the following morning. I was not made aware of this until after my booking. As I was arriving into the country on an evening flight, this concerned me. I messaged them in advance voicing my concerns of being able to check in. I never heard back. The day of arrival my flight was delayed. I messaged them again, indicating the I definitely would not be able to arrive before midnight. Again, I never heard back. I arrived at the airport, now closed, at 1:00 a.m. a solo female traveller, with no recourse but to find alternative accommodation for the night. I arrived at the hotel in the morning and checked in. I was asked to provide proof about the claim that the reservation desk closed at midnight and that I had messaged them twice. I was able to provide this to them. The staff agreed that the problem lay with them, that I had been given the wrong information, but that they did not have the authority to provide a refund. I said no problem, I would follow up with management. I was told that since I checked in that morning, it was considered an early check in and I was not entitled to a nights refund. Unprofessional, outrageous, arrogant customer service.

We stayed here for 2 nights in January and wished we had stayed for longer. The rooms and communal areas have been exquisitely restored in keeping with this beautiful building yet all the spacious rooms have amenities are 21st century. There is a lovely plunge pool for when you have been out and about sightseeing and the hotel is perfectly positioned near to the UNESCO zone. The staff are all excellent and attentive and breakfast great. I highly recommend this hotel.

Jawi Peranakan Mansion, Penang—true heritage

This is one of the most charming boutique hotels on Penang Island. It has been sensibly and tastefully renovated and is beautifully furnished with antiques and textiles. The service here is impeccable, quietly and sedately efficient, helpful, and genuinely pleasant. The breakfasts are wonderful. The hotel is centrally located for visitors who are happy to wander around and explore the heritage area by foot. I highly recommend this establishment without hesitation for those who would like to obtain a sense of what the “older” Penang could have been like.

Beautiful rooms, much attention to detail. Excellent service, can't say enough about the uniformly fabulous staff. Best coffee I had in Malaysia at breakfast.
Pool is quite small and very small area with uncomfortable deck chairs near it. Smoking is allowed in the pool area and because the area is so tight, we non-smokers had to leave when there were smokers there ( most days).

Good location. Within walking distance to many popular eateries. The whole mansion is beautifully furnished. Though breakfast is continental, there is daily local dish prepared on top of the usual eg. Chinese pancske, fried noodles, curry puff etc.The only thing to note is that the bed is slightly on the firm side...other than that it was perfect. Not recommended for young children.

Chris Ong the owner has come up with a fantastic idea with his hotels in Georgetown. We stayed in this one and visited two others. Who would want to stay in a high rise such as the Oriental when you can stay in a small intimate historical building such as these and the stupid thing is they are cheaper!!
But the truly outstanding thing is the service .The boys and one girl were so attentive without being pompous.They truly couldn't do more. We were there for seven nights and wish it was longer. Ideal for wandering around the nearby heretage area followed by as swim

Fridge and safe in the room with plenty of drinking water provided. Coffee or tea from breakfast area. Hotel is approx ten minute walk to the main art streets and another 5 minutes to Little India. Some good and famous restaurants on the same street approximately 5 mins away (Hameediyah Restaurant 184a Campbell St for Nasi Kandar), be prepared for a long line). Or at a tangent 10 minutes to the New Lane Street Food Stalls and nearby Durian Stall.
We would happily stay again next time we are in Georgetown.

Impeccable Service

Service at the Jawi Peranakan is first rate - very prompt, attentive and yet unobtrusive from all the staff. Guests feel most welcomed.

The rooms are tastefully furnished with Moorish/Indian accents and the grounds provide a tranquil respite from the traffic outside.

Guests don't have to walk too far for meals and shopping. There is a good mix of high-end as well as cheap dining options nearby. Shops at Campbell Street and Chowrasta Market are about a 10-15 minute walk away.

All in all, it was a memorable stay that surpassed our expectations!

Nice property restoration

If you are looking to stay in a small intimate hotels with a supremely nice staff then this is a good choice. The small property is a well restored old mansion. The furnishings are tasteful. The room is spacious yet cozy. The bathroom is very functional and pleasing. The bed is comfortable and the A/C is more than adequate. The only negative for some people might be the street noise that is beyond the managements control. It is only traffic and not any other kind of noise.

A lovely boutique hotel.

Lovely place. A century-old main building modernised but retaining an elegant colonial feel with antique and traditional furniture and fittings, while being modern where it counts. We were a family of three who stayed six nights. Our two-level suite with a courtyard was very well serviced. The staff are lovely: Puspa and Muizz in reception and the waiters and general helpers Goffa, Rupel Debu, were not only friendly but went out of their way to be helpful and offered acts of generosity. Checking out felt like saying goodbye to friends. We were suitably impressed by the colonial splendour of the Eastern & Oriental Hotel but on balance preferred the friendly intimacy of our boutique address.
There were faults, which I'll mention for the sake of a complete report though they won't matter to most people. Our suite had two TVs, which sounds impressive, but one was just a repeater since they had to play the same channel simultaneously. The two showers were good, but one of the washbasin taps emitted little more than a trickle. The stairs in the suite were steep and narrow and definitely not recommended for infirm or large users. The hotel lies outside the Georgetown old town where most tourists spend most of their time, but it's not as far as it looks on the map: Chowrasta market is only a five-minute walk away.
A favourite hotel for us.

An outstanding heritage hotel in Georgetown.

The best place we've ever stayed, without a doubt. There was no wifi in the room when we were there due to 'new cables being installed'. We saw no evidence of this and, strangely, it worked fine in the lobby but not the rooms. If this is important to you, it would be wise to ask about this before booking. Everything else was perfect. We couldn't ask for more. Such attentive and friendly staff too.

Convenient location with excellent service

Location of the hotel is quite central and very convenient. Most areas are walkable and popular food places are just a short walk away.
We got the suite which housed 4 of us comfortably. Upper “bedroom” can be warm during the night but hotel staff provided an additional fan when requested.
WiFi as mentioned by other reviewers is intermittent and weak. Even our portable WiFi router didn’t work at times - hotel staff mentioned that there were digging regulations that prevented them from upgrading to fibre optic (this might be the cause?).
On the whole, we enjoyed our stay here and hotel staff were extremely attentive, friendly and service was top notch. Our parents enjoyed their stay very much. Thank you JPM!

Beautiful Peranakan Style hotel

The moment we walked in we felt immediately relaxed. The room was spacious and well decorated with traditional peranakan motifs. The staff were friendly and gave good recommendations for food and cafes nearby. The only thing was that the blanket was a bit thin so it felt a bit chilly, but overall a wonderful experience! We will definitely be back

Wonderful stay

What a beautiful place! The owner has put a lot of thoughts into the decoration as you can certainly appreciate all the details that went into it.

Our room was on the 1st floor near the kitchen/pool area. I was surprised that we didn’t have any noise issues. We did request for a quiet room and was given this room, which did not have a view (the windows open into the side wall).

The staffs were the best part about this hotel as everyone were super attentive and willing to help.

The pool area was cute..it is not big but adequate given the size of the hotel. It was nice to plunge into the pool after a day of
walking around in the heat.

Only small issue was the hotel’s smoking policy - while no smoking was allowed in the room, it was allowed at the outdoor area - pool area, front garden..I was surprised that the owner would allow smoking near such a historical building.

Location also was a bit far from center of the town. We ended up taking an uber after dinner in lieu of a 10 min walk..it was tough to navigate the sidewalk given it was blocked off for restaurants, cars or just stuff.. but overall, a great stay!

Gorgeous property and great service.

A wonderful stay here in early March with my wife. The property is beautiful and even better than the photos. It has been stylishly and thoughtfully designed with a traditional decor. The room was huge with a sitting area, big bed and a modern bathroom, all beautifully decorated. The wifi was good and plenty of plugs for recharging devices in the room. Fresh bottled water was left in the fridge daily as well as bottles of filtered water. The service at the mansion was second to none. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. There were lovely touches such a large shared breakfast table, snacks/drinks available to help yourself throughout the day and a quiet sitting area upstairs. After a swim, a member of staff would bring a cooling drink of iced water or lemon tea which was thoughtful and refreshing. My wife had a birthday just after we left the mansion and the staff left a small cake and lovely birthday message for her in the room the day before we checked out (it was delicious!). I believe the quality and service at the mansion surpasses its 3-star rating. I would stay here again in a heartbeat and not hesitate to recommend it to friends. Thank you for helping us have a most enjoyable stay.
