The hotel has a wonderful antique feeling to it from the entrance, the main areas, and the rooms. The single and the duplex rooms were equally spacious which was very appreciated. The staff is also 24/7 and so helpful when checking in and out. There was also complimentary tea time from 2-5 each day my family was there.

The hotel is beautifully decorated in Pinang Peranakan style architecture, clean and the room was spacious with a ceiling fan as well as air con. Staff were friendly throughout. It is situated about a 10min walk from Hin Bus Depot and just round the corner from Lebuh Kimberley a busy and bustling food street.

Not sure why this hotel has received so many good reviews. The hotel is full of historical charm that is for sure but after we went to our room we found the bed sheet has a huge brownish stain on it. We requested the service desk to change it but they said it was too late (10pm) and all the stuff has left. So the lady gave us the new bed sheet and we put it on top of the bed. Then later we found the blanket sheet also has a lot of visible stains, and then there are also a bunch of holes on it as well, the edges of the blanket sheet cover was yellowish brown color, there is a hygiene concerns of this hotel.The fridge when open has light, but it does not work. I put a bottle of water in it and the next morning is is still at room temperature. We checked out one day earlier despite that we paid for two days stay as we were not comfortable to stay due to the hygiene concerns.

Great location, within easy walking distance to Armenian Street and Komtar, and easy for getting Grabs to anywhere else. Check in was easy and welcoming, we did have to pay 6MYR for room tax and have a 200MYR deposit charge on our card. We also got complimentary afternoon tea vouchers for each day of our stay. It was a nice break from sightseeing to get free tea, coffee and snacks from 3-5pm. Hotel and rooms are a bit dated but that is part of the charm.

Good breakfast and coffee, very friendly staff. A well kept clean spacious room, with a great sized bed, comfy pillows and excellent bedding. Quiet air conditioning and two ceiling fans. Powerful shower. Good location. I'm a light sleeper and would recommend earplugs as there is some road and mosque noise or from Majestic if an event is on. The atrium area is a lovely peaceful retreat, comfy seating.

We loved our stay at Areca, we had a room on the ground floor and it was sheer luxury, spacious, beautiful tiles on the floor, high ceiling, lovely period furniture, fans and air conditioner and a shower that was truly magnificent. We loved the afternoon teas and all the delights that were served. Your staff are extremely polite and courteous. We stayed for a week and would be happy to return. Thank you Areca.

Friendly, helpful staff & a well maintained boutique hotel that has old world charm. We had the attic room which was spacious & well furnished. The beds were comfortable, the air conditioning powerful especially with an additional ceiling fan. The shower was wonderfully strong. The amenities were basic but adequate.
The best part of our stay was the iced, flavored water freely available in the lobby for guests. It was especially nice after walking in the warm outdoors. A nice touch of complimentary afternoon tea with a few tasty nibbles.
We would definitely stay here again.

Centrally located. Can be noisy. Helpful staff.

Pros: Centrally located in the city. Walking distant ( literally across the street) to many famous food stalls. Polite and helpful staff. Fairly painless check in and quick checkout. Free wi fi. Free afternoon tea between 3 and 5pm daily. Steps away from the city free bus stop. You can take this bus to visit most of the attraction in downtown.
Cons: Because of its location, it can be noisy 24/7 ( they are aware of this and they are ready to provide earplugs upon request). One side of the hotel faces a banquet hall. So it can be very noisy during weekends. No ventilation fan in the washroom. Toilet paper is a bit thin. Not comfortable to use. The bed mattress was sagging in many places. We live in two different rooms and they're both like that. The lighting in the room was dim. I was having difficult time looking clearly at myself when shaving.

Really great location in Georgetown,characterful heritage room, really spacious with wardrobe, iron, and two bottles of mineral water provided daily,and fridge.Excellent AC AND ceiling fan, a nice sitting area for guests and helpful,friendly staff-special mention to Nasrin for welcoming me and help throughout stay.

Only downside is a little bit of street noise, but I'd definitely stay here again.

A nice centrally located hotel with helpful staff.

All staff was helpful. Location was central. Room was decently clean and size is generous for their smallest room. Walking distance to many popular food stalls. We didnt request for room cleaning during our stay (ie. More than 1 week) , but when we asked for toilet paper, towel, bottled drinking water, coffee, etc, the staff was quick to provide. However, they dont have any shaver. Make sure you bring some yourselves. The hotel doesn't have a laundry facility, but you can walk to a 24-hour, self service laundry shop about 10 minutes away. Due to its central location in the city, near a main junction and a banquet hall, it can be very noisy, especially on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The hotel does acknowledges this and provide free ear plugs upon requested. Our room was on the 2nd floor and away from the banquet hall (but you can still hear the traffic if you have the window opened), so we didnt have any trouble sleeping. They provide free afternoon tea.

Beautiful clean hotel - lovely design and furniture throughout. Very large rooms, ok breakfast. Liked that bottled water was provided and water plentiful around the hotel. Afternoon tea was a nice treat in the afternoons. Great location - easy to walk everywhere.
Only complaints would be the room always smelt musky - like it needed fresh air. And the hotel is next to an event space so it can be loud in the evenings from the event music and from event staff packing up after the event. During our stay there were 2 events on.
Overall, I would recommend.

The location of this hotel is very central to many, many local popular food stalls. They're walking distant away. This saved us a lot of stress. Even though there's no laundry facility in this hotel, there's a laundry shop nearby. It's within 10 minutes walking distance. So you can visit the city with a small luggage. Checkin was fast and the stuff was helpful. We were offered welcome drinks while waiting. It is located in the heart of the city, and the fact that they want to maintain the heritage theme of the hotel, sound proofing may not something they can control. To workaround this, they provide free earplugs upon requests. I dont think they have ventilation fan in the bathroom. We cracked the bathroom window open, turned on the ceiling and AC to create an airflow, which ventilated the bathroom. Free Wi-Fi is provided. Signal was strong and steady. The lighting in the rooms was a little bit dim. It feels romantic and cozy. This is to keep in line with the heritage theme of the hotel, i was told by the front desk. However, this can be a little bit challenging when you shave or put on your makeup. There's no gym in the hotel, so make sure you walk a lot to burn off the calories of your food intake. There's a restaurant in the hotel. If your room is close to it, it can be somewhat noisy from the clanking of dining wares and utensils (from 6am). All and all, I think it's a pretty good 4-star hotel.

Our stay at the Areca was not typical for us. Yet we enjoyed the nods to the building’s history with the furnishings in our heritage room and loved the courtyard! However, a week was a little too long in this style of accommodation with no windows in the room. There were only dark wood shutters that opened to bars on the outside, which seems typical in the historic shop house design.

The area is filled with history and it was very easy to get to the various points of interest. The staff are wonderful and very helpful.

One note: of the 7 nights we stayed there the Majestic theatre across the street hosted two events in a row on a weekend. It was very noisy as we had read it could be in another review, so we were okay with it (headphones worked great)! Also, the noise stopped promptly around midnight. The other 5 nights it was super quiet as it often was during the day.

All in all, it was great for the price point. Thank you to all staff for making our stay memorable and for doing such a great job at preserving this piece of history for guests to enjoy.

Hotel Excellent location off Penang Road, lots of places to eat, near shopping mall and walk to heritage history. Hotel clean, very relaxing, breakfast excellent, staff very helpful. The tour rep and colleague helped us book a 2 day trip to Kuala Lumper and recommendations, it was very good. A day trip to Penang Hill and Baru Farringu beach is also recommended. Love Malaysia.

Good location but crossing Penang Road can be challenging. Use the bridge or walk to the traffic lights at Campbell.

The hotel is amazed with Peranakan decor in modern settings. Bright and airy. Our rooms are big and spacious. The only problem I faced are steps to the bathroom. Good that the hotel has an “antique” glass lift that moves slowly. It serves clients like me who can’t climb up and down the stairs. Maybe should consider to have another lift just in case the one and only lift breaks down. Thank you to the management for the extra high tea treats. Very generous portion.

Areca Hotel was delightful, full of character, so much nicer than the high rise hotels we have been staying in so far on this trip. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, not only with a welcome drink, but an invitation to afternoon tea each afternoon of our stay. I really wanted to love this hotel. I thought not having windows would be quaint but it mostly felt like a dungeon. One reviewer on another site mentioned \"termites\" and had pictures. He said he was basically blown off by staff. It could have been a one time occurance but it happened to me as well. I noticed a bug creeping on my bed. I didn't take a picture because I immediately killed it. It was the same as the other person's picture. If this happened to one person and to me weeks later, this is a normal occurance that has not been addressed. I couldn't sleep that night afraid of what might be crawling around me. I didn't bother reporting it because we just had one more night and I didn't want the hassle of being moved.

The hotel is in a decent location with a good spot for breakfast just next door and walking distance to many places, however, I would stay somewhere else if I'm in Penang again.

Nice hotel in the historic Georgetown area

Nice hotel in the middle of the old section of Georgetown. Close to some of the tourist attractions and easy to get transportation to others. You do have to travel a bit to get to a decent beach if that is what you’re looking for. But if exploring historic cultural center, it’s a great place to stay.
Hotel was well kept and maintained. Check-in was easy and the staff was friendly and helpful throughout.

Beautifully designed nostalgic feel hotel

Very good experience. This hotel has a nostalgic feel. Like the peranakan style ceramic floor tiles. Room is clean & cosy. Water from shower head is strong & good. Walking distance to major tourist spots & eatery like local food char kueh tiao, chendol dessert. Highly recommended a restaurant called Hygge Dining & Bar which is a block away from hotel. It served very good modern Asian cuisine. My family chill out at the hotel ground floor area with own bought beer & snacks at night. We like everything about this hotel. Will definitely choose it again for next visit.
