Great hotel. Rooms are spacious, well appointed, great pool and amazing breakfast. What was lacking was the ability of the front desk staff to provide good restaurant suggestions. There should be a list that the hotel provides with suggestions. I would definitely recommend the Eastern and Oriental Hotel and would stay there again.

We have stayed at the E and O three times over the past 20 years. I love this hotel! Its old colonial flavour sits well with me. The new part is lovely too but this time we stayed in the Heritage wing which will always be my favourite. Our room 010 which had a separate lounge and twin bedded room, opened up to the grass area a few steps from that gorgeous pool. Staff was attentive and friendly. Food was amazing. This hotel is full of old world charm. Always will be highly recommended. Hope to keep returning as the years progress.

The room and buildings were beautiful. The service varied. Sometimes very good, sometimes stand offish but professional. The service at the poolside was a bit rude. Our request for napkins when we received some food was met with eye rolling for example. The food was 3/5. One exception was the afternoon tea which was wonderful.

Disappointing stay. Property is definitely trading on its history and is in dire need of updating. Room issues were not addressed and breakfast was so poor that we went out instead. Assistant manager called once and then never followed up. Would not stay again and wouldn't recommend.

I recently stayed at the E&O Penang and overall had a very good experience. The room itself was exceptionally clean, comfortable, and well kept. I needed a few extra items like towels, and although I had to ask, the staff responded quickly and efficiently, which I really appreciated.
One area that could be improved is the food offering. The room service menu is quite limited, especially late at night. Arriving back at the hotel around 11:30pm to find the bars and restaurants closed left very few options, which was a little disappointing for a hotel of this standard.
Some of the common areas, particularly around the pool and outdoor spaces, are starting to show their age and could benefit from a refresh. It would also be great to see more variety in the food choices across the hotel, especially more local Asian options.
Overall, though, it’s a solid 4 out of 5 stay — classic, comfortable, and with excellent service when needed. With a few updates and broader dining options, it could easily reach a 5.

Staff in general not very friendly except the doormen and porters. Cockroach at noodle area at breakfast. Just not a welcoming vibe in general. I’m a platinum member with an established group of hotels and I forwent that to experience something different and I found the hotel to be nothing special. May have the laurels of being 140 years old but the welcoming is definitely not that.

A delightful step back into the charm of traveling in the past. Like Raffles in Singapore, this hotel will bring you back to the time when travel felt like living abroad. Our room was beautiful, a suite opening up onto the garden next to the waters edge. The room is beyond comfortable and quiet, a beautiful experience. The hotel staff is helpful and friendly, the hotel itself is quiet and spacious. The breakfast is delicious, we had one of the best Nasi Gorengs here. Overall, a highly recommended place to stay in George Town.

Great buffet breakfast in Sarkeys - huge choice of hot and cold food including freshly made noodles and eggs according to your choice. We really enjoyed sitting outside for breakfast as the main room gets a bit noisy . The only negative was we found it a bit odd that they clear breakfast up 20 minutes before closing time so that's a bit of a rush and unusual for a hotel to do that. But apart from that great breakfast. For a smaller choice but for a more pampered breakfast The Planter is a nice alternative. Very attentive staff there.

- the victory suites do not allow access to the heritage pool, nor access to the club suite, none of which was intimated anywhere when booking nor on the hotel's own website/literature. We asked to upgrade when we found this and got a flat refusal
- the victory pool while lovely has steps into it the last one being about 18 2 feet abovethe pool floor. If you are elderly or got good on your feet, you will struggle
- some areas could do with TLC, e.g the wondows in Planters Bar needed a wash and the outside tables were grubby

We stayed in the Heritage wing which has a charm all of its own. The room layout was lovely, however, the bathroom seems due for an update. The staff were friendly and accommodating, and the food in the Palm Court restaurant and the bar was very good. The Cornwallis was a treasure, a lounge where you can cool down and relax with a complimentary drink.

This is a satisfactory hotel but not 5*. It obviously was a very grand hotel in its day but needs renovated to bring it up to those former standards. The location overlooks the sea but it is not a good view!
The saviour for us was Nagesh at reception who was extremely friendly and helpful. The other member of staff was Lillian in the bar area who was a ray of positivity and excellent service.
The food at breakfast had lots of options but the quality should be better. Those hot dishes being offered where often cold and are not being kept at the right temperature.
The suite we had was of a good size and a wonderful power shower....which we loved. The toiletries where also of a good standard. The television must be one of the smallest I have ever encountered on my travels and certainly should not be a suite.

Great iconic hotel - good value overall - we stayed in the Victory wing and the rooms are spacious and we preferred to the heritage section. Service was polite, not overbearing and the hotel had a nice relaxed feel. Lovely infinity pool. Breakfast catered adequately fif every taste.

This is one of my favorite historic hotel. The swimming/Gym area is just right size. Morning Yoga classes by the water is also one of my favorite activities. The breakfast buffet is the best of the world. I love this hotel.

Beautiful Hotel experience.
This hotel is truly 5 stars 🌟 Our suite room was gorgeous and so spacious. We were overlooking the sea in the heritage section of the building. Everything you need for a great stay, even our mini bar items were free ! Also had access to lounge for tea/coffee throughout the day and drinks & snacks between 6 & 7 pm. We had breakfast in Planters as it was quieter than than Sarkies and a beautiful view from the outside. We will definitely stay there again.

It is not clear on Expedia that we were not booked in the hotel advertised. There is a new wing called 'Victory Tower' that we had to stay in. The old hotel front desk staff were dismissive and no help. The new tower manager was very helpful and although he couldn't put us in the old hotel as advertised he did upgrade our room and give us access to the amenities of the 'old hotel'.

Might have been the BEST Hotel we have ever stayed at in the World. And we have been to a few. In fact, after our two stays there; during back and forth Cruise overnights - we sat down later and tried to figure out if there were any better?? It took a while to even come up with a couple of our favs’. And We have had some Grand Ones, but the E & O; we can easily count on, with only two or three fingers. Views spectacular. Ultra clean and safe. Quiet and Relaxed. Rooms fit for Queens and Kings. Excellent location - with short walks to some cool Markets and reasonably priced Night Time eats. Red Garden Food Paradise, close by gets top marks. And the breakfast buffet at the hotel is unparalleled / unbeatable for quality, selection, friendliness, service and tastebuds. Definitely the best buffet breakfast in the World, bar none! And the best of all was the Very Friendly / Courteous Staff. Professionals in every aspect. Top that off with an excellent local driver, that we still correspond with daily - and E & O and Penang has easily become one of our favorite destinations. So wish to return/visit again. Very well done. Thanks to ALL. We will never forget You.

This hotel is truly a gem. Beautiful building, excellent room (Rudyard Kipling) with the completely unexpected upgrade. Afternoon high tea was superb. Additional VIP benefits were drinks/food in private lounge in the evening, and free breakfast from a choice of three magnificent hotel restaurants. The best place to stay in SE Asia!

Show on Google MapsAcquired back in 2011, Muntri Grove was originally a row of 10 modest houses built as living quarters for workers serving the wealthy families of the grand houses of Muntri Street. These double-storey houses were some of the early houses built in the 19th century with low roofs, small living spaces, and only two rooms each unit.
As with most buildings built during that era, these terrace houses feature British influences but the materials used were more modest such as single brick walls and wooden partitions upstairs between the houses. Restoration works on the houses started in 2013, where the architectural framework was maintained as close to its original forms as possible with only minor additions to strengthen the structures as they are.
The original parts of the house such as roof trusses, windows, and doors were repaired, maintained, and replaced. Access to the rooms on the ground floor is through the original front doors while on the first floor, the rooms are accessible through an impressive 130 feet-long veranda at the back of the houses.
Each housing unit was transformed into two large rooms, one on the ground and one upstairs, each spanning an area of about 450 square feet to afford wide, spacious rooms for guests. The 10th house at the corner was destroyed during World War II and space was rebuilt to house an elevated swimming pool and breakfast area on the first floor and the reception area on the ground floor.

Under Ong's skillful touch, the collection of Edwardian era buildings, which were in various stages of disrepair at that time, was transformed into contemporary accommodation, complete with original wooden windows, doors, and roof trusses. The Grade II heritage building was originally the mews meant for the row of grand terrace houses built along the street during an era of affluence.
